THE SWEET, SIMPLE PLEASURES OF SUMMER

You can usually overhear people complaining, even on the very first day of a heat wave, but I just try to enjoy it as much as possible because, as we all know, rainy, chilly days are sure to come again. Hazy warm spells aren’t long-lasting in the North; and for me, there’s no better reminder of the sweet and simple joys of life than a few days of intense heat and balmy breezes.

As the last snow melts on the mountains and the occasional whiff of fresh-cut grass and barbecued meat drifts by on the wind, it feels like summer has officially arrived. Like the distant (yet vivid) memory of the feeling of the last day of school, hot summer days fill me with lightness, excitement and joy. We get so busy this time of year and, as adults, we often don’t have the luxury of having the same extended periods of freedom that we enjoyed as kids, but that doesn’t mean that we can’t still make some time to reconnect with small things that make us feel happy and carefree.

Here are a few suggestions if you’re looking for ways to add some simple summery fun that’s easy and inexpensive and sure to bring some extra sweetness and light to these dog days of summer.

A Sweet Treat

Whether it’s a soft-serve ice cream for your drive home, or some fresh B.C. fruit from The

 Sweet, wild Yukon strawberries

Fruit Stand, spoil yourself a little with something sweet. Peaches, cherries, apricots and nectarines—there’s so much to love and so many ways to turn them into fabulous summer desserts. Add some fresh corn and new potatoes or some frozen seafood and you’ll have all the necessary fixings for a delicious and satisfying meal. Life, like summer, goes by way too fast, so why not indulge every once in a while?

Simpler Is Sweeter

I would be willing to bet that your fondest summer memories are probably not of elaborate, expensive outings or big, complicated trips. The things that have brought me the most happiness, during this time of year, are simple things: walking barefoot in the cool grass, gathering wild strawberries warmed by the sun, picking a bouquet of fireweed for the kitchen table, dipping my feet into a cold lake, and hiking with friends and family, enjoying the smell of the forest.

Eating Out(side)

There’s something about eating outside that makes food always taste so much better. Maybe it’s the extra oxygen in the fresh air, or the appetite you work up after being outdoors all day … but a simple hot dog, cooked on the barbecue, or a smushed sandwich (pulled from your backpack on a beautiful weekend hike) can taste more delightful than the mostexpensive meal at the most-exclusive restaurant in town. Heat up your grill, make a campfire or grab some food to go that you can eat outside on your lunch break. Eating outside reconnects us with our inner child: you don’t need to remember your table manners, and an added benefit is that clean-up tends to be much faster. If you need some new ideas for meals to be cooked outside, look up “campfire recipes’” online at whatsupyukon.com, to see some recipes from past issues.

Soak Up Some Sun (and vitamin D)!

Even though the first day of summer also marks that point in

The Sweet, Simple Pleasures of Summer

~ Rose-Petal Sun Tea ~

Ingredients

■ fresh, wild rose petals

■ a sprig of mint

■ water

■ a slice of lemon

Method

■ honey

■ Ice

■ Dried hibiscus (optional)

1. Add some freshly harvested wild rose petals and some mint to a big mason jar, fill with cold water or room-temperature water and seal the jar.

2. Place the sealed jar in direct sunlight (i.e., in a warm, sunny window) and leave for several hours, occasionally shaking it, if you like, until it has the desired flavour.

3. Strain out the herbs and add a slice of lemon, some honey and ice.

4. If you want to add some beautiful colour, include a bit of dried hibiscus tea to your initial mixture.

Enjoy!

The South Canol meanders 230 km between Johnsons Crossing and Ross River in the Yukon. Back in 1943, the U.S. Army constructed it to move supplies and to support an oil pipeline between Norman Wells, N.W.T., and Johnsons Crossing. After the road was abandoned, so too were many of the trucks and machinery, some of which are still there today.

the year when days begin to get shorter again, there are still plenty of daylight hours left to soak up some vitamin D, in preparation for winter. Exposure to sunshine has gotten a bad reputation, but if done wisely and responsibly, the benefits of moderate sun exposure are reported to include better sleep, stronger bones, reduced stress levels, lower blood pressure, a healthier immune system and more. So stretch out on your deck, grab a towel and head to the lake, or throw on your shorts and tank top and do some yard work. If you’re lucky, the hot, dry weather

and a bit of wind will keep the bugs away.

Instead of focussing on the stifling heat of your car, after a long day at work, or the additional times that you have to water your garden, pour yourself a tall glass of something cold and sweet (like the homemade iced-rose infusion below), cook a simple, easy dinner to eat outside, stretch out on your lawn and give yourself a little window of time to do the things that give you pleasure during these warm, beautiful days. ■

IDIOMATIC ORIGINS

THE REAL DEAL

“McKay”— “McCoy” … Let’s call the whole thing off!

Remember ironing? Some of you, like me, may still secretly love to iron. And we have the “real McCoy” to thank for that—inventor Elijah J. McCoy, our fellow Canadian who gave us (or many of us) ironing boards. Now, is that a blessing or a curse (I’m not sure). Anyway, I think I may very well have the first ironing board he invented!

And if you enjoyed running through a sprinkler when you were little, or you have children or grandchildren who love it, you can thank the real McCoy for that, too. We can also thank him for inventing a vital part for the lubrication of steam-locomotive engines.

But … wait a minute. Just a minute. There is more than one real McCoy (Will the real McCoy please stand up?).

You see, the real McCoy may have originated in the 1800s as the “real McKay,” with the MacKay whisky distillers (Cheers!).

You say “McKay,” I say “McCoy” … and a vision of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers tap-dances onstage in my head, and I can almost hear the musical number by George Gershwin and Ira Gershwin and, for a moment, I agree with them: “Let’s Call the Whole Thing Off.” Well, ummm, not so fast … The idiom, masquerading as a metaphor (and vice versa), has enjoyed a long and fruitful life and it just refuses to die off. In fact, the idiom has attained movie-star status, among the rich and famous, and has been penned by authors the world over.

In the States, the idiom entered the boxing ring, with Charles “Kid” McCoy, and then wooed us

in Cole Porter’s song “At Long Last Love.”

Since then, the real McCoy has risen to heights beyond what the MacKays could ever have imagined, appearing in dance routines and in song lyrics—stopping just short of winning an Oscar— and even making a guest appearance in the famed Star Trek.

Then, of course, there were the family-feuding Hatfields and McCoys from the backwoods of West Virginia in the U.S of A. (Imagine fighting over pork.) Just as cream rises to the top, so it was with the McCoys when it came to the “pig fight” and, subsequently, any member of the McCoy family was the “real McCoy.”

As you can see in the sampling above, real McCoys and McKays abound, and seeds of the real McCoy have been scattered far and wide, making it truly difficult to discern this idiomatic origin. But despite this and even through it all, the idiom’s meaning has not been lost and has not lost its appeal.

Bringing it home to “where we live” … If, by chance, you have procured an original work of art, which you are now proudly displaying above your mantel, then,

Our dentists and team of dental

have been proudly serving the Whitehorse community for many years. Come in for your first consultation and you’ll leave with something to smile about.

You can expect friendly and welcoming care in an environment that relaxes even the most anxious patients. We all love what we do, and look forward to welcoming you and your family to our practice.

you are in possession of the real McCoy (but remember, as Proverbs 16:18 warns, “Pride goes before a fall”).

Or, if you are one of the rich and famous and you have a stunt double, then you are the real McCoy.

And, like Elijah J. McCoy, if you have invented something and have the patent to prove it, your creative masterpiece is the real McCoy.

If, in fact, you own an authentic and original “anything,” well, you have the real McCoy.

Heck, you can even point your index finger back at yourself, right now, and proudly proclaim that you (yes, you!) are a one of a kind—the real McCoy (How’s that for authenticity?)!

Hold onto that last thought, because each of us is an original.

(For this and more real McKay-McCoy wisdom, check out en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_real_ McCoy.) ■

A LITTLE ART WITH

Yukon Artist

Niki Parry has a collection of original works on display at Baked Café during the month of July

Niki Parry always had a creative itch. The Yukon artist has tried all kinds of different creative endeavours—from jewelry-making, to quilting, to sketching—but it was when she was on leave from her day job in 2017 that she came across a style of painting using fluid acrylic paint, and she fell in love with it.

“It’s an interesting medium,” she said. “You can use all sorts of colourful paint, you can bring it together, and it just has this dynamic flow that just spoke to me.”

In all her various creative projects over the years, Parry says that colour is what she’s most been drawn to. Since discovering her preferred style of painting, she can hardly keep herself from spending all of her spare time doing it.

“It’s such a lovely way to spend my time,” she said. “I just keep going with it.”

Sometimes, Parry will paint based off of a photo, and other times just start to create based

on whatever colours she is feeling that day. She’s drawn mostly to bright rainbow and sunset colours that show in a lot of her work, as muted tones don’t do the same thing for her.

“I use a lot of paint in my process,” she explained. “I’ll mix up all the different colours, and then once I have all the paint ready to go, I pour it on as opposed to using the brush or anything like that. It goes on fluid, and once it goes on the canvas, I’ll mix it using brushes, popsicle sticks, pallet knives and gravity. Sometimes I do it in layers, depending on what kind of look I’m going for.”

Parry’s pieces have to lay completely flat to dry, which can take 24 to 48 hours, depending on the size of the piece. Parry makes the final decisions regarding composition and layout after the first phase of drying, as it’s a process she can’t completely control, then finishes the piece with paint brushes.

Since June, Parry has had her work displayed at Baked Café, in

Whitehorse, where it will be up until the end of July. She’s sold a couple of the pieces she’ll be swapping out for newer ones, and she’s happy the community is able to see and appreciate her art as they pass through or sit down for a coffee. Since it’s tourism season in the Yukon, Parry wanted to create pieces that represented the beauty of the territory. Some of the pieces are inspired by the lakes and the feeling of summer in the Yukon.

“We have such amazing skies, and our landscapes are so great,” she said. “I try and capture the moving element from the skies and the water, together, to capture that feeling.”

Other pieces on display have cabins, like you’d see around the Yukon, with northern lights and midnight-sun-inspired backdrops. Because she tried so many different art styles before finding her creative calling, Parry offers some

advice to artists who might still be searching for their preferred craft. “Just try everything,” she said. “Try different mediums and all different creative outlets, and when you find something you can’t put down, that’s where you want to invest your time and develop.”

To see more of Parry’s art, visit nikiparry.com. ■

THE KLONDIKE KORNER

After three decades in classrooms in Beaver Creek, Faro and Dawson, Dan Davidson retired to continue writing, as he had been all those years. Please send comments about his stories to dawson@whatsupyukon.com.

THE TWO LEVELS OF AUTHORS ON EIGHTH

Avenue that bears the residences of these three authors of fiction, non-fiction and poetry, who were amazingly prolific during their lifetimes and never suffered from any sort of creative obstruction.

North, a journalist and historian, didn’t live on Eighth, but he established the Jack London Museum where the tour begins each year.

The rules of the contest allow for writing of all three types, and only insist that they reflect a given theme, which this year is Fragrance.

This year, the deadline for submissions (just announced in late May) is July 18, to give time for the judging, the results of which will be revealed during the annual Writers’ Block Walking Tour, which is scheduled each year on the Thursday, which kicks off Discovery Days weekend events (this year, that will be on August 17).

The tour, which takes a couple of hours, celebrates the lives and works of Jack London, Robert Service, Pierre Berton and Dick North, whose literary efforts have done so much to make the Klondike known around the world.

It begins at Jack London Square (run by the KVA), moves to the Robert Service Cabin (run by Parks Canada) and concludes at Pierre Berton’s Home (jointly run by the Writers’ Trust of Canada and the Dawson Community Library). It’s a cooperative venture.

Writer’s Block is our ironic nickname for that part of Eighth

Entries should be in the range of 1,600 words, which makes it easy for them all to be published in the pages of our local Klondike Sun newspaper during the following year.

Submissions should be in Word format, with a cover page including the author’s full name, pen name (if preferred), email or postal address and phone number. The author’s name should not be included in the submission itself.

Send entries to kva@dawson. net.

Typically, the contest attracts entries from all over Canada and the United States, as well as some from farther afield.

COVID-19 took a bite out of entries to this contest, over the last few years, but in pre-COVID times, at least two-dozen aspiring authors tried out each year, and one or two of them had their pieces included in collections of short stories, later on.

Prizes in the three main categories include books by the four writers, and a gold nugget offered by a local placer mine.

FRIED EGGPLANT

The trick to really great fried eggplant is flouring it twice. The coating ends up somehow delicate and satisfyingly crunchy at the same time. Serves 4 as a snack.

Ingredients

❑ 1 large eggplant, sliced ❑ Salt, to taste

❑ 4 eggs, beaten

❑ 1 cup flour

❑ Black pepper, to taste ❑ Canola oil, for frying

Instructions:

1.Set the oven at 350℉. Season the sliced eggplant with salt and let sit in a strainer for 15 minutes. Press the eggplant dry with a paper towel.

2. Place beaten eggs on a plate, and flour in a separate place. Season the flour with salt and pepper. Coat each slice of eggplant in flour, then egg, then flour again. Repeat with all of the eggplant.

3. In a large, straight-sided pot, heat 2 inches of oil to 350℉

Working in batches, fry the eggplant until brown on each side. Place fried eggplant in the oven when done. Once the eggplant is all fried and in the oven, cook the eggplant in the oven for 10 minutes, then serve hot with lemon wedges. ■

GROWING UP VAN BIBBER

When Elder Lucy Sanderson (née Van Bibber) was growing up in her family home in rural Yukon in the 1930s, she dreamed of travelling. “The cranes would fly overhead in the spring and fall, and I thought, Oh, I wish I could go with them. I always wanted to see what was on the other side of the hills.”

Sanderson is the fourth youngest of 16 children born to Ira and Eliza Van Bibber (two of the children were stillborn). Like many of the Van Bibber children, she was born at the family home at Mica Creek, located about 1.5 kilometres from what is now Pelly Crossing. While growing up, the children learned how to be self-sufficient and live on the land. They hunted

At 96, Lucy Van Bibber Sanderson reflects on her early years growing up at Mica Creek, working at St. Mary’s Hospital in Dawson City and gaining the skills and experiences that would serve her well throughout her long, full life

and trapped, spending some winters at a trapping cabin at Crooked Creek. They helped keep up the family garden. They studied and learned. And they also had a lot of fun.

“We had a road going up the back of the trappers’ cabin. We used to get high up there [on the snow in winter], and then we’d slide down in a toboggan and hit the side of the house to stop,” said Sanderson with a laugh. “My mother would just shake her head.”

Sanderson’s father, Ira, came from West Virginia to the Yukon, with his brother, during the Klondike Gold Rush of 1898. His brother carried on to Alaska, but Ira stayed in the Yukon.

One day, in the summer of 1907, he was stocking up on supplies at Fort Selkirk when he met Eliza Jackson. The pair married, and the rest is history. In fact, many of the Van Bibber children led notable lives, including Alex, who was a well-known trapper; and JJ, whose memoirs and photos were published in the 2012 book, I was born under a spruce tree

Sanderson remembers seeing her older siblings set off on a raft—loaded with dry fish, boxes of vegetables from the garden, camping gear and supplies—to go to school in Dawson City. She was too young to go with them at the time. “As they were pushing out from the shore, father was calling out instructions: ‘Now, when you get

out on the Yukon River and the raft starts sinking, pull up to a big driftwood pile and get two good logs to put on each side of the raft,’” said Sanderson.

Later, Alex told her he was grateful for that advice as the raft did start sinking and the extra logs saved them from going under.

Though Sanderson never went to school in Dawson City, she did take lessons at Mrs. Cowaret’s home, in Fort Selkirk, for a few years during the winters. “My brother Dan took us to Minto with a dog team and we would cross over to Fort Selkirk once the Yukon River froze up,” said Sanderson. “Then, we would come back home before the ice got rotten.”

Also, she and her younger siblings took lessons at home from their older brother, Alex. “Father had him set-up a school room in one of the bedrooms on the corner of the house, and he taught us how to read and write,” she said.

When Sanderson was 16, cousins from West Virginia visited the Yukon. She told them about her dreams of travelling, and they urged her to go to Dawson City to find work.

When a steamboat stopped at Fort Selkirk, on its way downriver, she bought a ticket from the purser and hopped aboard. Her parents were not there to see her off and almost missed saying goodbye. They had to run down the riverbank, alongside the boat, to wave.

“I felt so bad for them. I waved and waved and they saw me, so they waved back,” she said, “and then the boat turned and went toward Dawson.”

Once in Dawson City, in the mid-1940s, she worked as an aide at St. Mary’s Hospital, a threestorey building that was located in the north end of town below

it rolled—Bang! this way. And then Bang! that way. The hospital was rocking and I thought we would roll down into the river.”

Sanderson was interested in nursing and so she asked if she could watch a surgery. Her request was granted and one of the nuns working in the hospital set a high stool in the corner of an operating room. As Sanderson sat up on the stool and watched a young woman get her appendix taken out, the nun was worried that the sight of blood would upset Sanderson. “She would look over at me and say, ‘How you doing? Are you okay?’

“I was fine,” said Sanderson. “She didn’t know we trapped and skinned, killed moose and caribou and cut them up all the time.”

photographs she’s taken, from her memories and from life. For years, she had a box of paints she would carry around with her.

“I liked to paint everything but portraits,” she said. “When you paint people, they look at the painting and say, ‘I’m not that ugly … Can’t you make me look nicer?’ And I don’t want any squabbling.”

the Moosehide Slide. Sanderson worked and lodged in the children’s ward, and she remembers being woken up one night by some tremendous shaking.

“It was an earthquake and it scared me half to death,” she said. “My little bed had wheels on it and

In fact, after her experience at the hospital, Sanderson wanted to become a nurse’s aide. She pursued studies in Regina, Saskatchewan, until she left to provide care for her uncle in Alaska. After he passed, she moved to Calgary to take a secretarial course. She completed the course and worked at the City of Calgary until she got married. At that time, women were encouraged to stop working outside of the home once they married. Sanderson and her family lived in Calgary for eight years before moving to Cranbrook, B.C. She raised four children and helped to support her family by selling her paintings. A talented and prolific painter, Sanderson paints from

During the summers, Sanderson would spend time in the Yukon where she and her sisters, Linch and Kathleen, sold their paintings at roadhouses along the Alaska Highway. “We’d hang our paintings on nails on the walls [of the roadhouses]. They’d sell them and call us and say, ‘Your nails are getting empty. Fill them again.’ We painted non-stop, more or less, when I’d be up in the Yukon all summer. We did quite well.”

Sanderson lived in Cranbrook, B.C., for many years, and recently moved back to the Yukon to be closer to friends and family.

Now, at age 96, Sanderson has lived a full life. Like the cranes she envied as a child, she has travelled to many places—as far north as the Arctic Ocean, and as far south as Antarctica. The walls of her home are covered in her paintings and in photographs of her family, and she still keeps a large photo of that Mica Creek home, to fondly remember the time she spent there with her parents and her large family of brothers and sisters. ■

pipe and lashed a tarp to it. By the way, CRA will not allow the cost of weather protection for your stuff as “moving expenses.”

By comparison, Jippu was easy. The Vincent, the Suzuki and the Serow on the trailer, the canoe on the roof rack; food, clothes and doggy in the back, and we were done.

Calgary was definitely not home. So, this time, with a ’53 Ford 3-ton cabover named Homer, a ’93 Jeep Cherokee named Jippu, a factory trailer with three motorcycles, and a new bull terrier named Tigger, we did come home—to Whitehorse.

The best decision we’ve ever made—and I mean EVER—was hanging on to our property in the Yukon. We spent the better part of a week loading and reloading Homer, lugging everything we owned out onto the lawn, trying to get it all to fit in his 14-foot grain box, then putting it all back in the house. Then reloading until I finally had to admit that my wife was right. There was no way it was all going to fit. So we pared it down, took two pallets to Byers Transport, and tried again.

We still had to send a dozen boxes to Whitehorse by bus! Aww, man!

To make it all weather tight, we glued up a framework of ABS

The trip was mostly just very slow. I don’t remember having Homer weighed, but we were right down on the overload springs. One-hundred horsepower, a fivespeed overdrive (seldom achieved) transmission and a 16,000-pound gross vehicle weight guaranteed a maximum speed of 50 miles an hour. And believe me, the mileage was and is no screamin’ hell.

Gassing up again for the umpteenth time, this time in Hythe, Alberta, we were at the pump when a guy pulled in behind us and informed us: “You know you’ve got a flat on your left inside dual, eh?”

Damn. I had the tools, alright: 20-ton jack, three-quarter-inchdrive socket set, snipe and two spares. I just really wasn’t looking forward to changing it. I could’ve spent a sleepless night thinking about it; and the next day, rassling with it.

But the kid on the pump says, “Hey, we can fix that.”

(Turns out it was also a tire shop.)

“Are you sure?” says I. “It’s a widowmaker.”

“That’s OK. My dad wants me to learn how to fix ’em.”

If speed and economy were not Homer’s forte, grunt was. We once weighed in at 21,000 pounds on the scale at the Whitehorse dump, with a load of sod for the compost pile. We used him to haul loads of manure, firewood, gravel for the driveway … and, of course, the two pallets awaiting us at Byers. A vintage three-ton pickup, with a dump body, is a thing of beauty.

We first called him Homer because we’d had thoughts of making a motorhome out of him. But then, full frontal, he started to look more and more like Homer Simpson. Finally, rather than us taking him home, we realized that he was taking us home.

At Teslin, we agreed that we’d push through even though it was dark. We just really needed to get home.

We had a little wake-up on the hill at the Marsh Lake bridge (Yukon River Bridge) . The dreaded red-and-blue flashing lights on the hill by the bridge. What I was down to second gear! Just letting me know he was going by, I guess.

My friend Earle had opened the place up for us, so we just parked and grabbed the “fart sacks” and the air mattresses (looking forward to a really good sleep at home).

Well, guess what. Tigger and his puppy teeth had discovered one of the air mattresses (guess whose).

Be it ever so flat, hard and devoid of furniture, there’s no place like home! ■

Clayton’s CAR CARE Tips

BATTERY

Batteries store energy that is needed to start your vehicle, there are a few things to remember about batteries. Regular maintenance #1 is making sure the battery is secured properly so it doesn’t vibrate, keeping connections clean and tight at the terminal, with loose connections you may run into problems like vehicles won’t start, alternator not charging properly and could cause battery and alternator failure. Making sure your battery is ready for the colder weather we see in the Yukon like adding a battery pad or battery blanket to keep it warm when the vehicle is not in use; by keeping the battery warm in colder weather you will get the most power out of the battery on start up. Here is a side tip: if you don’t drive your vehicle on a regular basis and are experiencing battery problems, you could ask you local mechanic to install a low amp battery maintainer; this will keep your battery fully charged even when the vehicle is parked for a long time.

TODDLER ‘ON A ROLL’

Toddler + Wheels = A Whole Lotta Fun!

What is more intimidating than a three-yearold?

The answer is easy: A toddler on wheels. Yep, definitely more intimidating—but a heck of a lot of fun, too.

Just strap some wheels to that little one’s feet and, suddenly, they become the ultimate challenge of those parental skills that you have been desperately trying to master in the last couple of years.

You thought you needed to be fast before? Just wait until their little feet roll forward and they fly backwards with a laugh. Thank heaven for helmets and elbow pads! You know they’re going to come in handy for the inevitable moment when you aren’t right there to grab their hands and keep them upright.

The idea of letting our toddler learn to roller skate was one that my husband and I both jumped at as we both thought ahead to how much fun it was going to be to go out as a family, in the summer months. And, given that our boy has an endless supply of energy, any activity that he can get excited about is a no-brainer in our books.

It also helped that a few friends of ours play roller derby and were planning on hosting a big public skate in town. That only helped provide incentive to help get our son as much practice as possible so he’d be able to best enjoy himself.

We decided to get him some roller skates, with my husband deciding to get a pair for himself as well. However, what really surprised me was just how challenging it was (and still is) to find roller skates, in Whitehorse, for little kids (heck, even for adults). It was because of this that we ended up settling on a pair of rollerblades, instead—and, so far, it’s been going pretty well. Very slow, but pretty good.

He wants to use them. He’s excited to get them on. And even though we are still on the grass, working on skills like balance and moving his feet forward in a glide, rather than in steps, I see a little more progress each time he tries.

But, boy was I worried when we finally decided to take him to the roller-skating event at the curling

definitely a wise decision on our part, as we were all pleasantly surprised by just how quickly he

decided to forgo my usual summer sandals … That would’ve hurt!).

It took some time.

It took patience on both our parts and opportunities to try out best methods of holding his little hands, in the best way that provided stability but also allowed him to have more control over when and how he moved.

I learned not to pull him and, instead, to let him guide the pace. And soon enough, after two or three (or four) times around the rink, my husband and I were pleased to see him finally start to push off with his left foot. And once he realized what that did, there was no stopping him. Around and around we went— slowly, but with more and more confidence at each turn.

It also helped that the place had a snack bar, which allowed for a couple of much-deserved congratulatory treats for a job well done.

rink, a few weeks ago. It was going to be one of the first times he really got to give the sport a try, in a setting that wasn’t our front yard and sidewalk. And while we prepared ourselves for all possible outcomes, in terms of his enjoyment level, I really wasn’t sure what to expect from the experience.

We ended up deciding to rent him a pair of roller skates at the event, thinking that the two-bytwo wheels might help him gain a little more confidence and provide a little more stability. This was

started to get the hang of it.

Of course, it started a little shaky, and I could feel the sweat pouring down my forehead as I struggled to find the best way to hold him upright when we first stood him up. It remained clear that he is still too young to really understand bodily instruction, and even as a friend (who’s a pro at the sport) graciously attempted to provide some guidance, with getting him to bend his knees, my little buddy still preferred to slide both feet forward at the same time, leading to him swinging backwards and to my feet getting rolled over. Luckily, I chose to wear pretty sturdy shoes that evening (I had

He was thrilled with this activity, and I’m so glad we tried it. Not only did it help provide a new way for him to burn off some steam, but it was also hard not to swoon over just how cute he was, all decked out in his blading gear. I do hope that he continues to be able to work on this skill with the rollerblades he has. I’m sure, with time, things will get easier with the in-line skates. But, in the meantime, I am certainly going to keep a lookout for roller skates, if I ever see them in town. They were just too much fun to not try and track some down. Heck, maybe I’ll get some for myself, too. ■

A YUKONER IS BORN!

The last weeks of pregnancy may seem like the slowest weeks of your life

Each day, with every little movement or twinge, you wonder if that is the signal that you are going into labour and your pregnancy will be over! Once my guy dropped down from under my rib cage, I was able to breathe again and finally get some more activity in … even if it was only 10-minute walks.

As I approached the 39-week mark for a possible elective induction, I was still working towards how I could get this guy out without medical intervention. So I did everything, whether it was uncomfortable or not. I tried every suggested “remedy”—by midwives, nurses, mothers and doctors—to get this baby out (but to no avail!).

Finally, I hit 39 weeks and called the maternity ward, but they were too busy and could not take an elective induction. The overwhelming and distraught feelings that I had managed in order to mentally and physically get myself to the 39-week mark, when I expected my baby out, were expunged.

So I had to wait and hope for the next day.

On Thursday, April 20, I was admitted to the hospital and was given the first of the many items used to induce labour. The first was put in, which kind of looked like a iPhone charger cable that was laced with a chemical to help “ripen your cervix,” to get the baby out, and by Friday I was still not dilated more than one centimetre (in case you didn’t know, you need to get to 10 centimetres).

On Friday I was given the next item, a cervix catheter that gets filled with water to try and mimic and push more onto your cervix. Nothing.

Saturday I was still at one centimetre, with no signs of labour in sight. I was now a priority for getting the baby out.

That’s when I got the drugs! An IV was inserted, with the drug pitocin, which was slowly increased. Pitocin basically mimics what my body should be doing to get the baby out, by releasing oxytocin, which causes contractions. Since I had already elected to have an epidural, it was suggested that it be given sooner, rather than when I was actually in labour. And the sound of not feeling anything was an immediate yes!

So I was given a needle and a catheter was put into my spine. Then, we waited.

As they increased the drugs and checked my cervix, within five hours I had dilated nine centimetres. I was given laughing gas because the pain was pretty awful when I was having a contraction.

(My husband now tells me I was hilarious, so if anyone wants to hear stories of me being utterly ridiculous while giving birth, just ask him.)

Meanwhile, the last annoying centimetre made it difficult because I couldn’t push until I was fully dilated. Eventually it was 9 p.m. on Saturday night (nine hours since the drugs had started working) when I was told to push … and push. And PUSH! I was told that I was doing amazingly well; yet, after two hours, I was told that nothing had changed. Baby wasn’t in distress, but nothing was progressing.

They offered to try to turn him around and do more things, and I was screaming for help to get this kid out. No joke … if you were in Whitehorse General Hospital on Saturday night, you would’ve heard me screaming bloody murder.

So, when the surgeon came in and offered me a C-section, I yelled “Yes!” I figured I would deal with the consequences for my body later, because I had to

get him out.

Unfortunately, there was already a surgery underway, so they had to wait until more staff arrived to do the C-section. At first it seemed bearable to wait, because I was told I no longer had to push. However, within 10 minutes the contractions were non-stop and every part of my body was in agony. I was writhing and screaming in agony.

Even as they wheeled me into the surgical room, I was screaming for the pain to stop. The anesthesiologist recommended I get a new cervical pain-management injection, rather than use the existing epidural, because I shouldn’t have been in that much pain after the epidural. Who knew that epidurals can fail? You would think the one thing that should be 100 per cent effective would be managing a giant baby coming out of your body. So, instead, I had to go through unstoppable contractions, in pain, while getting a needle in my spine. Oh, and doing this without moving. My poor nurse was trying to console me as I snotted

and cried on her chest. Nurses are incredible people!

However, once that injection went in, for the first time my body wasn’t in pain. It was such a relief. Tears were flowing down my face as they pinned me down and laid up the curtain around the surgical field.

Ryan came in at a time when things didn’t look as scary, but he said he could hear me in the other room. In what seemed like minutes, the surgeon said, “Wow, look at that head!”

Ryan stared at me and mouthed “I’m sorry.” Yes, Ryan has a rather large head now, but not when he was a baby. Then the surgeon yelled, “Oh my goodness, look at the size of him!” I heard Maverick’s first screams. “Congrats, you have a toddler!” Everyone laughed and started guessing that he must be over 10 pounds.

Maverick was cleaned up and brought to Ryan. At that point, I was almost asleep from exhaustion.

Then I woke up in the hospital room, with Ryan asleep next to me, hearing my new baby boy gurgling. I had a catheter in and still couldn’t move my legs, as a result of the drugs, so I had to call the nurse to bring my baby to me for the first time.

Then, at whatever early-morning hour on Sunday, April 23, I sat there looking at my little gollum, my ginger-haired baby whose head was 12 centimetres and who weighed nine pounds 12 ounces … and I thought, Holy moly, I’m your mum

I want to thank Dr. Bailey and my surgeon, Dr. Sumner, for making sure Maverick and I lived through the birth, and I especially want to thank my nurses, Jenn and Lianne, without whom I wouldn’t’ve made it … without their spectacular care for my family. ■

Meet KoKo!

The Best Things

are…

She’s a 2.5-year-old Husky x Pointer.

KoKo is a smart girl, she listens to commands well and is trained using a beep collar. She is a very highenergy dog, so having a family that likes to stay really active would be great.

She’s a sweet girl, she gets along with other dogs, with the proper introduction, and seems okay with kids. We’re unsure about how she does with cats.

If you are interested in adopting KoKo, please fill out an online application at humanesocietyyukon.ca. If you already have a pre-approved application with us within the last year, call 633-6019 to put your application towards her.

Note: Please submit only 1 application, noting your first choice.

EVERY STUDENT, EVERY DAY 2023-2024 Student Attendance Project Awards

A total of $350,000 in direct financial support has been awarded to 36 projects across the Yukon to help increase student attendance through the Victoria Gold Yukon Student Encouragement Society’s Every Student, Every Day fund.

The successful projects were designed and submitted by Yukon schools, school councils, Yukon First Nations and community organizations to help remove barriers, increase student engagement in learning and promote a greater sense of belonging in the territory’s school communities. The 36 projects were determined by a selection committee made up of Yukon Education sta and Every Student, Every Day representatives and will be implemented in the 2023-2024 academic year.

Since its establishment in 2012, Every Student, Every Day has directly supported more than 200 local student attendance projects with over $1.85 million raised primarily from Yukon businesses and individual donations. This year Every Student, Every Day increased its funding to $280,000 and the Government of Yukon contributed $70,000 in addition to in-kind administrative support.

“This year’s Every Student, Every Day funding disbursement is the largest ever and goes a long way to help communities address student attendance challenges in our classrooms,” says Society President Tara Christie.

For descriptions of the successful student attendance projects, please visit everystudenteveryday.ca/ projects-2. Yukoners can also mark their calendars for Every Student, Every Day’s Annual Fundraising Gala on Saturday, September 23 in Whitehorse.
