THE GUILD HALL
When the Guild Hall pivots from one show to the next, there’s often quite a bit of overlap. As artistic director Brian Fidler told What’s Up Yukon, auditions for the next theatre show will be held when its current one is still running, meaning that the team behind the productions needs to be well-organized and to work efficiently.
“We are lucky that we have several spaces to work with at the Guild, so we can be performing one show on the stage and rehearsing the next show in the OR (the Other Room, as it is
known),” explained Fidler. “It can be tricky moving two productions forward at the same time, but it’s also a wonderful challenge and we have an excellent board who supports our activities, pitches in behind the scenes and generally keeps things moving on the organizational front. It’s really a group effort to keep the whole machine rolling.”
With three shows running between this fall and next spring, Fidler and his team are hard at work making sure that everything that needs doing gets done on time.
The season’s first show is CoyWolf by Métis playwright Colin Wolf. The show is a co-production between the Guild Hall and Wolf’s own company, Thumbs Up Good Work Theatre Collective, and its run at the Guild will be its world premiere.
“At its heart, this is a play about family and follows the journey of a young CoyWolf (part coyote, part wolf) named Isidor,” said Fidler. “Colin and his partner Sydney, who is directing the show, describe the play as a cyber-folk
tale, in reference to the fantastical design elements that draw on cyber punk and the aesthetics of steampunk while, at the same time, the story functions as a fable or folktale with all of the characters being wolves, coyotes or coywolves. It’s a beautiful, passionate play that had us all in tears at the first readthrough.”
Next up is Mustard by Kat Sandler. The show centers around an imaginary friend named Mustard, who won’t go away. Mustard is present well into their person’s teen years, even becoming visible to the teen’s mom, with whom they go on a date.
“Things escalate when two goons from the Imaginary Friend Ministry come calling,” teased Fidler. “I laughed out loud a lot when I read it on the page, and I’m super excited to see it on the stage.”
The final show of the Guild’s upcoming season is the Canadian cult-classic musical Ride the Cyclone by Jacob Richmond and Brooke Maxwell. The show will be directed by Allyn Walton, with
The cast of El Crocodor, which Walton directed in 2019 with Scott Maynard as musical director

musical direction by Scott Maynard.
“This musical is truly a wild ride,” said Fidler. “The story revolves around a group of Saskatchewan teenagers who die in a freak roller-coaster accident but are given the opportunity to come back to life if they can make the case to be saved by the carnival’s mechanized fortune teller. As we have seen over the last several years, there is an amazing generation of young performers in the territory, and we’re excited to work with these talented folks on this show!”
There have been changes to how Canadian theatre, in general, is done since the pandemic, according to Fidler, but some of these changes are positive.
“We have shifted our focus away from the idea that ‘the show must go on,’ and moved it to ‘How do we take care of our performers, volunteers and audience, and still deliver stellar shows?’” Fidler said. “In many ways, the pandemic has strengthened our sense of community, and we have truly
seen how loyal audiences and sponsors are to this little community theatre.”
Founded over 40 years ago, the Guild began, as a community theatre, to showcase local performers, designers and directors. The Yukon has changed a lot since the Guild opened, and the community that it serves has as well, according to Fidler.
“There are so many more
‘communities’ and diversity in the Yukon, and so we are always thinking about how to redefine ourselves and to reach out to all the communities in the territory.”
“We have initiatives such as Make it at the Guild, wherein we open our doors to non-profit organizations, newcomers and individual artists, to use the space at affordable rates. We work on a sliding scale with our rentals
and invite artists and not-forprofit organizations to contact us to see how we can work together. I think it’s important that the Guild keeps the doors open to the community and makes the space available to anyone who wants to bring their creative energy to the Guild.”
Another major change is that the Guild’s general manager, Brandon Wicke, is moving on from the theatre company this fall.
“We’re sad to see him go and are on the hunt for a new general manager to come and join our team,” said Fidler. “We’re looking for someone with strong community spirit, financial chops, some technical know-how in the theatre, and some great people skills.”
The Guild is inviting applications from all communities, and the team is happy to answer questions about the position. Interested candidates can send an email to guildhall@northwestel.net.

Edges is a new solo exhibit by watercolour artist Lauren Waters, which will run throughout October at the Yukon Artists at Work Gallery. The exhibit explores the meaning and purpose of edges, in all their various forms.
“The inspiration comes from one of the main techniques I use to create loose, atmospheric watercolour paintings,” Waters told What’s Up Yukon. “I paint predominately with soft and lost edges to give an elusive atmos-
To Waters, the name Edges also refers to the idea of “finding your edge.” In her art and in her life, Waters said she challenges herself to go beyond her comfort zone and push her own edges.
“I am always learning new techniques, new styles, and seeking new inspiration in nature,” she explained. “I also feel very strongly that our world is on the edge. Painting northern landscapes, coastal and boreal forest, wildflowers, and doing animal portraits, is my way of showing how important these are to the world.”
Waters said the most challenging part of preparing for this show was pushing herself to learn to paint new subjects, including animals like bears, porcupines, squirrels and fish, and also creating larger-sized paintings. Conversely, the most enjoyable thing for Waters has been simply spending most of her time painting.
To prepare for this show, I spent time in some of my favourite places in the Yukon. Here, on the Dempster Highway, I was sketching en plein air with my dog Karma
“Before creating in my studio, I immerse myself in nature and do sketches that will serve as reference material,” said Waters. “I spent time in some of my favourite places, such as Snafu Lake and the Dempster Highway, and also paddling on Marsh Lake, where I live. Many of my paintings are inspired by these places.”
Waters is a former forester, and her knowledge and passion for nature plays a key role in her creativity.
“Like so many people in the Yukon, I love being in nature, she said. “The favourite part of my job as a forester was to be outdoors.

I spent a lot of time completing ecological classification using observations of the trees, plants, geology, soils and climatic influences, to analyze and understand natural systems.
“In forestry, I was very aware of the edge effect, which is the boundary between two or more different habitats. This zone has abundant ecological diversity and is very important. But it is also very fragile and easily disturbed. So much of our Earth is at or beyond the edge, being adversely impacted by climate change, the destruction of our environment and the loss of biodiversity.
“Now, as an artist, I observe nature in a different way. I am looking at the light, the colours, and seeking a focal point. The interplay between edges has become a source of inspiration, like the edge between the forest and the lake, between the mountain and the sky, et cetera.”
The Yukon is a great place for any visual artist, with an eye for landscapes and wildlife, to find inspiration. Waters said the open spaces, the scenery and the light in the North provide her with endless possibilities to create.
“I love being able to go for a beautiful hike, do quick, spontaneous watercolour sketches to capture the essence, take photos and then use that as inspiration later back in my studio,” she said. “I also have had the fortune to meet Steve Wilson, an amazing wildlife Yukon photographer who shares his photos with me. They have inspired most of my animal paintings.”
Waters goes on to say that the arts community in the Yukon is very open and supportive.
“There are so many opportunities here to interact with and learn from amazing artists,” she said. “Last year, I had a show at Bullet Hole Bagels, and the year before I had a joint show at the Community Gallery at the Arts Centre. Joining Yukon Artists at Work (YAAW), this past year, has been a great opportunity to meet with other artists and show my work. It is a non-profit, artistrun gallery that has developed a strong and unified visual arts community over 20 years. YAAW is the place for artists of many disciplines to exhibit their new works and projects.”
Edges runs from October 3 through 28, with an opening reception on October 5 from 4–7 p.m. All proceeds from Waters’

show will be donated to the local organizations CPAWS Yukon (Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society); Kaushee’s Place, a transition home for women and gender-diverse people, and Yukon Artists at Work Gallery.
“I feel it is important to give back to the community,” said
Waters. “Nature is on the edge, so it is natural for me to support the main environmental organization of the Yukon, CPAWS Yukon. They do important work to protect the environment and raise awareness. I chose Kaushee’s Place because I feel it’s important to support a transition home that offers ref-
uge for women, and for genderdiverse people, who are experiencing violence.
“Finally, as a new member of Yukon Artists at Work , I want to give back to the gallery that has been supportive of the local art scene for the last 20 years and is currently struggling. Artists usual-
ly pay a commission on any sales, to support the gallery expenses. For this show, I have increased my commission to support the gallery.”

HOCKEY FEVER!
“You look a little pale,”
I tell Heinz, our sports writer, after I greet him.
“But I am feeling better, for sure,” he yells. He was sick for a few weeks and I was happy to meet him at the stadium, even though it’s so loud that we have to yell at each other. In 20 minutes, I will see my first ice hockey game in a stadium. I am excited. The fans of our local hockey team, the Wild Wings, are singing chorus after chorus on the right side of the stadium. On the left side I can see policemen lined up next to a group of fans from the other team, Adler Mannheim. Two rivals are playing against each other tonight and the place is full—5,000 people and hundreds of policemen. One could say they are like the Calgary Flames and the Edmonton Oilers—enemies. The fans of each team can get a bit … rough. That’s why the police are watching the whole stadium.
Schwenningen is a small town in the Black Forest region, with a population of 36,000. What makes this town special is its local ice hockey team, Wild Wings. They are playing in the Deutsche Eishockey Liga (DEL), the German Ice Hockey League. Tonight is the first game of the season and I am sitting in the Edmonton Oilers press box with Heinz, our ice hockey expert for the newspaper I am working at. I am here to learn from him. A few weeks ago, he was sick, my co-worker was on vacation and I was the only editor left at the newspaper. I am working—writing about ice hockey. It was just a pre-game but, still, I had to report about it. The pregame was taking place in Switzerland, so I wrote the report while watching it online. It went okay. I followed the comments of the sports reporter but realized I had no clue about hockey. That’s what I am trying to tell Heinz over the noise of 5,000 fans. He looks at me and says, “But you have lived in Canada, right?”
I nod. Shame on me.
Anyway, tonight I will learn from Heinz, who is writing his articles live at the stadium. The game starts at 7:30 in the evening and the report has to be at the newspaper by 11 o’clock, to be printed in the next day’s issue. We are Schwenningen’s local newspaper, and ice hockey is important … don’t make any mistake.
Heinz has his laptop set up in front of him. Our row is full of reporters. I prepare my pen and paper. The moderator lets us know
that the game is about to start. He calls the players out, one after another, by name. The Wild Wings fans are cheering them on
already. I am familiar with some of the names: the Spink brothers, for example, are twins from Ontario. Tyson and Tylor Spink have
DID YOU KNOW... The Inspiration for What’s Up Yukon’s logo
been playing for the team since 2020. They are pretty good, and fast. The coach is from Ontario, as well—Steve Walker. I can spot him in the Coaching Zone.
Usually I am on the other side, sitting at my desk in the newspaper office and waiting for the hockey report. But now I am here and it’s already time for bully. The game has started and Heinz and I are following along. He explains the rules about the two blue lines on the ice, while typing notes on his computer. Suddenly he is yelling. I realize he is not yelling at me but at a player on the ice. Heinz is not only a reporter, he is a fan. He doesn’t even try to hide it or to be neutral. After the first period, everybody in the press box agrees that the Wild Wings are too slow. The Wild Wings didn’t have much of a chance against the other team.
That is changing in the second period. The Wild Wings are picking up speed and I am captivated. Heinz comments that they play unusually fair (no fights, so far, on the ice). After the second and third periods, the score is 1:1.
Now I am hooked.
The team is getting better, the fans are singing and the Wild Wings are fighting like no other team. The clock is ticking and, still, the score is even. Ten minutes to go. The team is fighting to get hold of the puck. Overtime. Penalty for Mannheim! Finally, Wild Wings player Max Görtz scores a goal and it’s 2:1 for Schwenningen.
They won! We won!
The stadium is bursting with joy. I glance at the clock and it’s 10 o’clock, already, and we still have to go to the press conference to get quotes from both coaches. We make our way through the stadium and rush to the conference. Photographers and reporters are waiting for the coaches and the manager.
The clock is ticking and I am nervous because we do not have much time left before our deadline. On my way back to the press box, I realized how quiet it is. The fans have left and the stadium is almost empty … just a few ice machines cleaning the rink. I dictate quotes to Heinz, so he can finish his article, and with five minutes left before the deadline, the article is emailed to the newspaper.
We won! ■

HOW TO COOK A LARGE ZUCCHINI
Let me count the ways
Who among us has not received a large zucchini from a neighbouring gardener, at the end of the summer? I was gifted a two-pound, 11.8-ounce monster in early September. It sat on the middle shelf of the fridge for three weeks before I could get to it during the busy harvest season. The problem with a very large zucchini is that it has grown tougher with age and cooks up best if grated into breads or muffins, or is chopped into a relish. When at last I could turn my attention to cooking my monster, I was tired of chopping, pickling and canning and wanted nothing to do with more relish. So, I turned to the easiest solutions: muffins and fritters. Both can be frozen to be enjoyed later, say in November, when we’re already missing fresh produce from our gardens and look back with longing on the abundance of summer.
and milk or yogurt.
4. Stir in grated zucchini. Add the zucchini mixture to the flour mixture and combine in a few swift strokes. Stir in blueberries and walnuts.
5. Spoon batter evenly into muffin cups, filling them to the top.
6. Place tin in the oven on the middle rack. Bake for 30 minutes, until muffin tops are golden brown and a toothpick inserted in the middle comes out clean.
7. Cool on a rack for 10 minutes before removing muffins from tin. Serve warm or at room temperature, with butter, cream cheese, jam— whatever inspires. Store in the bread box for two days, or freeze for up to 3 months.
Makes 12 large muffins.
ZUCCHINI FRITTERS
Ingredients:
• 4 cups grated zucchini (about 12–13 oz.)
• 1/2 tsp kosher salt
• 1 small onion, minced
• A handful fresh basil leaves, chopped (dill would work well, too, but don’t sweat it if you can’t find fresh herbs)
• 1 Tbsp dried mint
• 1 egg, beaten
• 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
• 2 Tbsp cornmeal
• 4 oz feta cheese, crumbled
• 2 Tbsp to 1/4 cup olive oil, for frying
Instructions:
ZUCCHINI MUFFINS
There are so many recipes for zucchini muffins—pick a card, any card! This one is an amalgam of several. I added wild blueberries and walnuts, but you could throw in low-bush cranberries, raisins, pumpkin seeds or almonds. Zucchini muffins are a blank canvas, ready for anything. *This recipe used 6 oz. of my green monster.
Ingredients:
• 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour or 1 cup all-purpose, 3/4 cup whole wheat
• 1 tsp baking powder
• 1/2 tsp baking soda
• 1/2 tsp kosher salt
• 1 tsp cinnamon
• 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
• 1/2 cup melted butter, or
vegetable oil
• 1/2 cup brown sugar
• 1/2 cup white sugar
• 2 large eggs
• 1 tsp vanilla extract
• 2 Tbsp milk or yogurt
• 2 cups grated zucchini
• 1 cup wild blueberries
• 1/2 cup chopped walnuts
Instructions:
1. Preheat oven to 350 F. Butter a 12-cup muffin tin, or line with paper muffin cups.
2. Whisk flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt and spices together in a large bowl.
3. Pour the melted butter or oil into a medium-sized bowl. Whisk in brown and white sugar, followed by the eggs, vanilla
It’s funny how we all gravitate towards the same recipes when there is an abundance of zucchini. As with zucchini muffins, zucchini fritter recipes abound in the ether and in cookbooks; you will find zucchini fritters with a Greek twist, a Sunday-morning waffle angle, or a keep-it-simple fiveingredient approach. This recipe, again, is a mix-and-match effort— a bit of feta, a touch of cornmeal for crunch, fresh or dried Mediterranean herbs (in case you’ve got some hanging around). Tip: the trick with fritters is to add enough binding, such as flour, breadcrumbs or cornmeal, to hold them together without making them stodgy. It’s a moving target.
*This recipe used an additional 13 oz. of my monster, leaving me with 24 oz. or 1.5 pounds, which I will turn into Zucchini Parmigiana. To be continued.
1. Grate zucchini on the large holes of a box grater, into a colander set over a plate. Toss with salt and let sit for 10 minutes. Pile zucchini onto a damp tea cloth or a piece of cheesecloth, gather the
corners together and twist, squeezing out as much juice as possible. Place zucchini in a medium-sized bowl.
2. Add onion, chopped fresh herbs, if using, and dried mint, and mix with a fork. Add egg and stir to combine, lifting with the fork to distribute evenly.
3. Sprinkle flour and cornmeal overtop and mix thoroughly, breaking up any clumps with the fork.
4. Stir in crumbled feta cheese, tossing to mix evenly.
5. Set a frying pan on the burner over medium heat, add oil, and heat until it shimmers. Form small patties of zucchini mix and fry in batches, cooking for 4 minutes on the first side, 3 to 4 on the flip side. Add oil to the pan as necessary.
6. Drain fritters on a baking sheet lined with paper towel and keep warm in the oven until all the fritters are cooked.
7. Serve with sour cream or yogurt, or a simple salsa verde made with the last of the summer herbs.
Makes about 20 fritters. ■
HUNTING CASSEROLE
Sometimes a hunting trip goes well, and sometimes it doesn’t. This recipe works for this time of year because whether or not you end up successful, you’ll have a lovely supper. If you’re going out for the day, take this recipe through step 1 and then cool it. You can add anything you end up with from your hunt (or not) and continue the recipe when you get home. Serves 4.
Ingredients:
❑ 4 Tbsp butter
❑ ½ cup chopped onion
❑ 3 cups sliced mushrooms
❑ 4 Tbsp flour
❑ 5 cups stock (homemade, packaged or a dissolved cube all work)
❑ 1/2 cup cream
❑ Salt and pepper, to taste
❑ 3 cups cooked pasta
❑ 1–2 cups shredded, cooked meat (grouse, rabbit, chicken— meat is optional!)
❑ 1/2 cup frozen peas (optional)
❑ 1 cup shredded cheese
Instructions:
1. Melt butter in a Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Add the onions and the mushrooms and cook, stirring often, until they begin to brown, about 8 minutes. When everything has browned, sprinkle flour over the vegetables and stir until evenly incorporated. Add stock and bring to a simmer while stirring (the mixture should thicken). If there are any clumps, use a spoon to smooth them out. Remove from heat and add cream, then season to taste with salt and pepper.
2. Stir in cooked pasta, meat and peas (if using) and adjust seasoning if necessary. Sprinkle with cheese, then place under a broiler until cheese is melted and bubbly. ■
GRATITUDE FOR THIS YUKON LIFE
we’re blessed with. Drink directly from an ice-cold mountain stream, on a hot summer day, and you’ll begin to understand what a gift this is. Whether you like fishing, kayaking, swimming or sailing, it’s all possible here. Water is life. May we always remember to take care of it.
THE LAND
If you’ve ever kept a gratitude journal, you probably quickly realized how much there actually is to be grateful for. Once you start paying attention, the things to be thankful for become endless. Studies have shown that gratitude can improve sleep, reduce depression and anxiety, and even support heart health. Life in the North isn’t the easiest life, and probably most of us, at one time or another, have thought about moving away … but if we really look around us, I think we’re pretty darn lucky to call this life and this place our home. Here are five things about life in the Yukon that I’m feeling thankful for this season:
THE SILENCE
In a world where noise pollution is becoming evermore widespread, silence is becoming a luxury. Nothing beats stepping outside on a cool autumn morning and hearing only the wind in the last golden aspen leaves, the gentle waves hitting the shore of the lake, and the last few geese flying south overhead. There aren’t many places left in the world like this. Our planet has become filled with overstimulation: the noise, the screens and the unceasing influx of information. Constant noise leads to constantly elevated stress levels. It’s not a coincidence that silent retreats and noise-cancelling headphones have grown in popularity, that various trains around the world now have “quiet cars” and that there’s even a barbershop in San Francisco that offers “silent mode” haircuts. Several years ago, the Finnish Tourist Board came up with a marketing campaign that drew attention to what they
called one of their best natural resources: silence. I think the Yukon stillness could give the Finns a run for their money. Whether you enjoy it on a mountaintop, in your sauna or under a starry night sky, take a deep breath and consider how many people on Earth very seldom get a moment of silence.
THE WILDLIFE
If you’ve lived in the Yukon for a while, close encounters with wildlife have probably become rather commonplace. We’ve all had our run-ins with bears and may even have lost a shoe or two to a mischievous neighbourhood fox. Despite the fears or annoyance that these encounters with wild animals can trigger in some people, I consider it a privilege to be able to share this land with these creatures, big and small. What a gift to be able to witness a moose cow and her calf wandering through the yard or to watch a tiny chipmunk nibbling on a ripe red raspberry. We get to see eagles catching fish in the lakes, and otters playing on the banks of rivers.
As with any sort of cohabita-
tion, for it to be harmonious there needs to be a certain amount of respect from both sides. We are not gods here; we are only a tiny part of our complex ecosystem. Some places on Earth have become almost devoid of wild animals, while here in the Yukon we get to hear the slap of a beaver’s tail, while paddling out on the water, or we may need to slow our car down as a porcupine waddles across the road. We are fortunate enough to live with animals that others only dream of someday seeing.
THE WATER
Crazy changes are taking place around the globe, and for many people, clean water is becoming even more scarce than a moment of silence. Only a small percentage of the water on Earth is freshwater, and of that, an even smaller part is accessible and drinkable. Seeing the Yukon from the air, you quickly become aware of the abundance of the freshwater
We may not live in the freshfruit capital of the world (and a trip to the supermarket can quickly become very expensive), but we have so much nourishment around us to be thankful for. Whether it’s a fresh-caught lake trout, a cup of fireweed tea, some grilled grouse, potatoes from your garden, a comforting bowl of moose stew or some homemade cranberry sauce, this place we call home feeds and sustains us. And not only does it tend to our physical needs, it also does wonders for our hearts and souls. Where else can you find so many wild places to draw inspiration and healing from? This land holds and nourishes us and we get to be surrounded by its natural beauty, all year long.
THE PEOPLE
Living even in the most gorgeous place might feel empty if you didn’t have anyone to share it with. Whether it’s a friendly chat with the woman ringing up your groceries at Wykes Independent Grocer, or a helping hand from good neighbours, the Yukon still manages to instill a sense of small-town warmth and community on most days. In general, people here still treat each other like humans. If you’re pulled off to the side of a deserted gravel road somewhere, it’s not uncommon for a dusty pickup to stop and check if you need help; and people still share the rewards of a bountiful gardening season or a successful hunt, with each other.
No place is perfect, but a little bit of gratitude can go a long way to make us remember how lucky we are, despite the imperfections. What are you feeling thankful for? ■
Sometimes we take the most precious things in our lives for granted: our health, our families, the air we breathe

Clayton’s CAR CARE Tips
BATTERY
Batteries store energy that is needed to start your vehicle, there are a few things to remember about batteries. Regular maintenance #1 is making sure the battery is secured properly so it doesn’t vibrate, keeping connections clean and tight at the terminal, with loose connections you may run into problems like vehicles won’t start, alternator not charging properly and could cause battery and alternator failure. Making sure your battery is ready for the colder weather we see in the Yukon like adding a battery pad or battery blanket to keep it warm when the vehicle is not in use; by keeping the battery warm in colder weather you will get the most power out of the battery on start up. Here is a side tip: if you don’t drive your vehicle on a regular basis and are experiencing battery problems, you could ask you local mechanic to install a low amp battery maintainer; this will keep your battery fully charged even when the vehicle is parked for a long time.
MOVING WITH A PRESCHOOLER (AGAIN)
Moving to a new home can be an exciting time
The promise of a fresh start (empty rooms to make your own, and perhaps a little more living space) is extremely appealing. After all, change is good, they say.
Change means growth—it is the first step to moving forward and, if you’re lucky, towards something better than what you had before. Change signifies a time for adjustment as you adapt to the unfamiliar. It can be challenging, for sure—scary, even—but it also provides the perfect opportunity for us to spread our wings, learn, and turn the page on a new chapter in our lives.
However, the process of moving also brings with it a certain amount of chaos, uncertainty, the need for penny-pinching and massive stockpiles of boxes. Throw
a preschooler into the mix and things get a little more complicated.
Over the last year, my family has had to go through this process twice. As renters in a territory going through a housing shortage, hearing that your landlord is selling can cause an incredible amount of stress. Suddenly it becomes a race to find a decent place to live that meets your budget amidst the hundreds of others who are doing the exact same thing. You see a place you like and you need to go for it right away. Both times I found myself, in the wee hours of the morning, checking Facebook groups for rental postings that would work for my family. I knew I had to respond quickly, as the owner of the property was undoubtedly being swamped with messages from other potential renters.
Luckily, this most-recent housing search resulted in finding a place that truly feels like a longterm home. It’s cozy, clean, safe
and my son just loves it. In fact, on our first walk-through, he was giddy as he explored all the rooms and enthusiastically pulled me towards the room he had picked as his own.
As a parent, it really did warm my heart to know that he loved the new place so much. That the thought of living there made him this excited. That he wasn’t go-
ing to be devastated to leave the place he had called home for a little under a year. I didn’t want him to feel uprooted, so to see him embracing this new space allowed me a huge sigh of relief.
And so, with a place we were all happy with secured, we got to move on to the next part. The “oh-so-fun” part: packing.
Ugh!
To be fair, it turned out not to be so bad this time around. Having never really felt secure in the rental we were leaving, we had never fully finished unpacking
from the move before. We still had a lot of our collectables, personal items and rarely used possessions boxed up, which made the process go a little faster. Although, the fact that our three-year-old counted as one of our packers, this time around, ended up making up for that in the long run.

Moving with a preschooler (again) cont’d from page 18
soon, it was evident that his heart was sad.
We did everything we could to make him feel better about it, and we decided to leave the toys he loved best out for him until the day before the big move, to make sure he had things to play with and bring him comfort in this big time of change. And while he did put up a brave front, you could still see a bit of downheartedness in his eyes until the big day came around.
That was tough.
We had arranged for a moving truck for a couple of days during the week, so Little Buddy would be at his child-care centre, playing with his buddies while we did the heavy lifting. And because we planned to space it out like this, we were able to focus that first day on getting our son’s room all set up for his first night at the new house. We got his bed, furniture, clothing and all of the toys over— ensuring that we could get it all set up before the end of the day. We even splurged on some Paw Patrol curtains to surprise him with. And it was so worth it.
that it’s going to take a long time for that memory to be topped. I wrapped him up in a giant hug and welcomed him home.
We were able to top this won-
Packing his cars
derful first day at our new home off with our sweet boy getting to explore and go for a quick ride around the block in the moving truck. He was ecstatic, and all it all accumulated in a much-needed full-night’s sleep for all of us. Which was just the perfect topping on an already delicious cake. ■
It was a hoot, though, getting to see his proud little face as he helped his mom and dad pack up boxes as we moved room to room. He did his best to be gentle, and I was surprised by just how into it he got. It became a countdown for him. He couldn’t wait to move to the new house, and because of that he would happily go along
with packing up more and more as we went along.
Until we got to his things.
Even though it was only a few days before, when his toys, including his beloved mountain of stuffed animals, were packed up (with exception of the few special ones he sleeps with), it was a totally different story. And even though he knew why we were packing them up and we assured him that he would see them again
When we picked him up at the end of the day and drove to the new place, he was over the moon! I can still recall the look on his face when he walked into his newly decorated bedroom, equipped with all the toys he had been quietly missing. His grin reached ear to ear; his arms spread wide as he exclaimed, “Look at my new room! It’s so beautiful!”
It was just the very best feeling I could imagine. And I know
5th Annual Golf Tournament Success for Students
On Saturday, July 15, Victoria Gold hosted its 5th Annual VGCX Golf Tournament in Whitehorse raising over $80,000 for Every Student, Every Day to support projects which help increase student engagement and attendance in Yukon classrooms.
Held at Meadow Lakes Golf Club in Whitehorse, the charity event hosted over 130 participants with support from over 50 sponsors and numerous volunteers.
“Once again this year, we are overwhelmed by the generosity of Yukon individuals and businesses in their support of Every Student, Every Day and student success,” says Victoria Gold President & CEO John McConnell. “With 24 golf teams and an increase of 25 per cent in sponsorship over last year’s tournament, we are extremely grateful for and pleased with the fundraising result. These dollars will make a recognizable di erence in supporting attendance programs for children and youth in the territory.”
A special highlight of this year’s annual charity golf tournament was a Hawaiian theme with diverse sponsor-led contests at various course holes, which helped contribute to the funds raised.
Every Student, Every Day is a project funding initiative operated by the Victoria Gold Yukon Student Encouragement Society. Since its establishment in 2012, Every Student, Every Day has donated over $1.85 million to projects focused on helping address student attendance in the Yukon through support for more than 200 projects.
Every Student, Every Day is supported through annual fundraising events and donations from individuals and businesses.
