any would argue that the point of Halloween is to be scary. Blood and gore and gruesome things are turned into costumes and decorations, rewarded with candy and celebrated in haunted houses. The origins of our modern-day Halloween go back to the Celtic festival of Samhain where special bonfires were lit and costumes were worn to ward off evil spirits and ghosts, but not many of those original aspects remain as part of our present-day celebrations. Turn on your TV or scroll through the news on your phone right

now and it may feel like there’s an escalation of death and war and actual terrifying things going on around the world. According to the Uppsala Conflict Data Program, which has been gathering information on global violent conflicts for almost 40 years, that feeling isn’t wrong: the number of active conflicts in the world are at a historical high (ucdp.uu.se/). News headlines talk of “bloody attacks” and “horrifying death tolls” as images show carnage and terror-filled faces. Maybe we don’t really need more “scary” in the world right

now. Maybe this is the year to try something different. If you’re looking for alternatives to the traditional scary Halloween costumes, for yourself or your kids, here are some Yukon-inspired ideas. Get in touch with your artsy side; look up a paper mache recipe, dig out some old cardboard or fabric and maybe buy a bit of face paint and see what you can come up with.

A Less Scary Yukon Halloween ... cont’d from page 2 A Raven The Yukon’s official bird since 1985, the raven is a significant figure in several Yukon First Nations cultures and is said to have brought light to the world. Ravens have an unusually large brain and are incredibly intelligent. They love to steal and cache shiny objects and can make an unbelievable range of calls, as well as being able to mimic other birds. Make yourself a set of black wings and a mask with feathers and a beak, and you’re all set.

A White Horse The capital of the Yukon allegedly got its name from the frothing rapids and whitecaps of the Yukon River that were said to have resembled the mane of a white horse. You can use the statue at the top of Two Mile Hill, created out of recycled materials by Yukon artist Daphne Mennell and journeyman welder Roger Poole, as inspiration for the look of your costume.

A Yukon Quest Dog Musher Halloween in the Yukon often comes with a fresh layer of snow. Why not involve your dog in your Halloween costume this year and go as a Yukon Quest dog musher? The Yukon Quest was started in 1984 and is considered by many to be the “most difficult sled-dog race in the world” (even more challenging than the famous Iditarod). Depending on the breed and size of your dog, this costume could turn out rather hilarious and may bring a smile to many a face.

The Midnight Sun The endless hours of daylight in the Yukon summer are just a memory now, but why not celebrate that memory with a bit of construction paper and some creativity. This may be the simplest costume idea, yet: just dress up a headband with some golden sun rays and put on a yellow outfit and you’re good to go.

A Campfire

Salmon Salmon have been a vital part of the ecology of the Yukon watershed and a traditionally integral part of communities throughout the territory, for thousands of years. Thousands upon thousands of salmon used to leave the Bering Sea and head up the Yukon River in one of the largest freshwater migrations in the world. That number has plummeted in recent years. Maybe proudly dressing up as this keystone species could help raise a bit of awareness about their importance and what’s happening to them.

Camping may be the ultimate Yukon pastime, and what would camping be without a campfire? There are lots of creative DIY ideas for this one online, most of which include some s’mores on a stick and simple constructionpaper flames.

On the Cover

The Boreal Forest

A Sasquatch

Get a group of friends or your whole family to dress up as different plants and animals of the boreal forest. Go as a spruce tree, a pretty pink fireweed, a red fox, a loon or maybe a moose. The possibilities are endless.

According to Red Grossinger’s book Nahganne: Tales of the Northern Sasquatch, there have been numerous sightings of this large and hairy human-like mythical creature, here in the Yukon. Its size, rumoured appearance and ability to disappear into thin air make the sasquatch perfect, spooky Halloween-costume material.

If all those ideas seem rather boring and mundane to you, here are two slightly more “scary” Yukon options …

A Mosquito You might think that a tiny mosquito shouldn’t be called scary, but what could be more in line with the theme of modern Halloween than a bloodsucking creature that kills hundreds of thousands of people each year worldwide? Thankfully, here in the Yukon our mosquitoes don’t leave behind diseases like malaria, dengue, Zika and West Nile Virus, when they bite us, but the Yukon is home to over 30 species of mosquitoes and they are quite an iconic symbol of the North.

Whether you dress up as something scary or decide to go a different route, this year, may we all have a wonderful time with our loved ones and remember to appreciate the beauty around us—to laugh and to play and maybe sit around a bonfire and hope it keeps the evil spirits at bay. n

Yukon big game hunters are gearing up for Nov. 1, which heralds the opening of the bison hunting season. However, the long-term forecast is a mixed bag of fluctuating temperatures, so the big question will be quad or sled? PHOTO: Cathie Archbould

First you get a project, then you have to come up with a plan on how best to build it. After that you get into lots of cutting, drilling and grinding, until you get to the best part—welding!

TALES OF NAHGANNE

Red Grossinger Red Grossinger is a sasquatch enthusiast, investigator and published author living in the Yukon.

THE CURIOUS SASQUATCH T

his sighting took place at Marshall Creek in the early evening of Wednesday, July 20, 2014, by four ladies from the Champagne-Aishihik First Nations (CAFN). The ladies were returning to Haines Junction after spending time in Whitehorse that day. As they approached the Marshall Creek Bridge, some 30 kilometres east of Haines Junction, they noted what they thought was a man in black coveralls who was walking about in the clearing on the right-hand side of the road, just past the bridge. As they approached the bridge, one lady mentioned it was “odd there were no vehicles parked at the bridge,” while another lady spoke up and said, “That’s not a man; that’s a sasquatch.” The driver then slowed down and stopped the car just past the bridge, only a couple of metres away from a sasquatch that was hunched over and that appeared to be picking and eating berries. After a minute or two, the sasquatch stood up, became aware of the car and kept looking at it and its occupants, curiously, then stepped a bit closer—probably trying to figure out what it was looking at—seemingly intrigued. While this was going on, two cars drove by without paying attention to what was going on and totally unaware of the situation. A couple of minutes later, the sasquatch seemed to lose interest in the car and its occupants and began slowly walking away while looking back at the car, over his shoulder, before entering the nearby bush and disappearing from view. Upon reaching her residence, one of the ladies contacted a mutual friend of mine and told him about the sighting. In the afternoon of the following day, he sent me an email mentioning what had happened. By that time it was evening, so I waited until the following morning to hit the road. Meanwhile, I contacted a friend from CAFN who got the sighting information and details, which was later passed on to me. Arriving at the location on the

following day, Friday the 22, all I could see was trampled-down vegetation. Obviously, many had visited the site, the day before, and any possible signs of activity had been destroyed in the process. One of the witnesses mentioned to my friend that she had judged the sasquatch to be about 2.3 metres tall and that it had dark, clean and well-kept hair; also, that it looked to be in good shape, that there were no visible breasts and that the upper body was muscular and it did not appear to have any extra fat, by any means. With this approximate height, I calculated his weight to be about 260 kilograms and the length of his foot to be about 34 centimetres, with the distance of his step being 135 centimetres; and his stride, twice that much. There were significant points about this sighting: the manner in which the sasquatch reacted: first off, he seemed unaffected by the sound of traffic on the road, and he crossed the bridge as if he were accustomed to the noise. Then he seemed quite curious about the car and the persons inside the car, as if trying to understand what it was, and he did not appear to be scared of it at all—just curious; also, the way he moved away was intriguing, as well—slowly and deliberately, while still looking at the car over his shoulder. Most sasquatch sightings are the result of someone who just happens to see a sasquatch crossing a road, a field or in some similar location, mostly at a distance, in a totally unplanned encounter. On the other hand, some sightings are the result of people actually searching for our legendary wild man during planned expeditions of some sort, and some are the result of game cameras that have been set up for this very purpose. On just about every occasion, when a sasquatch becomes aware that it has been detected, it will clear the location quickly or disappear in some fashion or another—but certainly not stick around like the curious sasquatch at Marshall Creek.

PHOTO: Red Grossinger

Marshall Creek area, the site of the curious sasquatch Through all of my research and with reading many sasquatch reports and talking with colleagues, I have never heard of

a sasquatch that became aware that it was being observed from a short distance but yet would stay around for a few minutes,

seemingly interested in the people watching it—a very humanlike trait. n

SPOOKED — MY SON SEES WHAAAT? L

ast Halloween, I scared my son. This year, he got me back. He got me back good. We both did it unintentionally. He’s since recovered; I’m still watching my back. To be fair, I have always scared easily. I’ll admit to preferring to sleep with a nightlight on in the bedroom, and I jump at every loud and unexpected sound. It’s truly embarrassing sometimes. However, ever since becoming a parent, I am trying my darndest to show a little more bravery when things frighten me and hope that I don’t pass my irrational fears on to my child. This is a task that became near impossible a few weeks ago when my son said and did something that chilled me to the bone. To set the stage, my family has recently moved into a new home. The house has a very cozy feeling, and with all the windows and bright space, it is difficult to feel anything but safe and comfortable within its walls. My son has even said how his new room isn’t scary (he’d been having nightmares before the move), and he has had no problem falling asleep in there each night. Whew! The place is perfect for us, which is why what happened next came as a bit of a shock. One afternoon, in the midst of unpacking, Little Buddy came running down the stairs after an hour or so of playing in his room. “Where did she go?” he asked. I was confused. “Where did who go?” “The lady–the lady in the house. Where is she?”

Chloe is a highenergy dog, she will need some leash training because she sure is a puller. She is an absolute love and just wants to climb up and kiss you all over. She loves to play and is motivated by treats and affection. She is quite the escape artist as well, so for now, she can not be left in an unattended yard.

If you are interested in adopting Chloe, please filll out an online application at humanesocietyyukon.ca. If you already have a preapproved application with us within the last year, call 633-6019 to put your application towards her. Note: Please submit only 1 application, noting your first choice.

Fighting some spooky monsters undesirable answer that every horror movie would present in this situation—a ghost. It’s not a leap, is it—to ponder the supernatural, when no one else is in the house and your child mentions another person (that no one else has seen or knows about) being there. It really freaked me out, especially since this was not the first time he has scared me like this. I still recall the nervous laughter I let out, to try and soothe myself after my son pointed up at the corner of our ceiling and asked, “What are you doing up there?” There was nothing in the corner of the ceiling. Luckily, for that instance, I was able to determine that he was talking to a light fixture

in the home. And since his threeyear-old brain had long forgotten about what he’d said when I asked him about it, we’ll never know for sure. But I am telling myself that was the reason for it. It certainly makes me feel better than the alternative. Although, to be honest, given how much my son is a fan of Ghostbusters these days (a great source of excitement for my husband), I almost think he’d love to have a ghost in the house— the Casper kind (not the horrormovie-type spectres). I can see it now … my husband and his MiniMe running around the house, decked out in their Ghostbusters jumpsuits, blasting spirits with their ecto-wands, trapping them in containment units and having the grandest time ever. I guess I can be reassured that, for now, it was a false alarm brought on by one-too-many Hal-

Ghosty This went back and forth a little bit as my husband and I followed him up to his room, reassuring him that there was no lady in the house. He remained insistent. I remained as composed as I could. After a few more minutes of this, my son got a little frustrated with us, for not understanding him, and then ran off to play some more. I slowly turned to look at my husband, who was also at a loss as to what our child was talking about. I also noted the slight grin that was spreading across his face as he noted the increasing worry on mine. “Here we go,” he said with a laugh as I started scanning the rooms and looking for the

on the ceiling—a reassurance that helped me sleep a little better that night. And as for our “ghost,” my husband and I discussed that this lady that our son spoke of could be in reference to our landlord whom we had been speaking about visiting us, a little earlier that day. It kind of makes sense … Perhaps he was merely asking where the lady that he heard us talking about was, rather than talking about someone he physically saw

Mini-Ghostbuster loween movies and an overactive imagination on my part (both of which I will not be passing on to my preschooler anytime soon). But, for just a moment (or several, if I’m honest), he really did have me spooked there. n

THIS IS HALLOWEEN

A

sure it was safe to eat. Looking back now, it always seemed to be her favourite type of treats that had something wrong with them. Interesting. This memory got me thinking … thinking about just how different Halloween looks as an adult and the way our views evolve over time. To be honest, I can see myself using those same “safety checks” my mother used as a way of getting first dibs on the free mountain of treats. It was a good trick—and it’s a little more subtle (and less tear-inducing) than doing Jimmy Kimmel’s “I ate all your Halloween candy” prank on my kid. As a mother of a three-year-old, this will be my second time taking my child out on Halloween night, and as the big day approaches, I thought I’d take inventory of how certain things have changed for me as an adult during this time of year.

For the best financial advice.

Kids will be kids, I guess. After all, tummy aches and getting sick were definitely not something I cared about as a little kid. I couldn’t think that far ahead. Why would I? Perhaps that is what it comes down to. As we get older, we start to live less in the now and focus/ worry more about what potential outcomes will be. It becomes more difficult to enjoy the moment when you know that you or they (or sometimes both) are going to pay the price for it later on. But, that being said, I am going to try and compromise a little to make sure my son has the same amazing Halloween memories I have. Yes, he will have to take it easy on his candy consumption. Yes, he will have to dress appropriately for the weather. We are going to discuss road safety beforehand so he knows to watch out for cars and not run out into the street. (And yes, I will be “checking” his candy to make sure that everything is safe for him to eat.) Halloween is truly a spectacular time of year. And regardless of how our lens on it changes as we get older and become parents ourselves, it’s still a fantastic opportunity to dress up, have fun and get a little spooky. Happy trick-or-treating, everyone! n

Checking out the decorations For example, when it comes to the candy, I definitely take care to slow my boy down as he goes in for “one more piece” (for the sixth time). And while I don’t mind allowing my son to indulge a little once a year, like this, I’m very much aware of what it’s going to do to his little tummy if he eats too much. Dealing with a toddler’s tummy ache is not fun at all—for anyone involved. Then there’s the argument over wearing a coat. Last Halloween I was given a harsh reminder of just how much of a fight I used to put up if I was told to wear my coat over my costume. As a kid, that was just mean. I wanted to show off my costume; I didn’t want it covered up. And I still somewhat understand that point of view. However, as I watched my little guy walk door-to-door in the near minus-20 weather, last year, I couldn’t help but stress over how I could cover him up more and more to keep him warm. And, to be fair, we did prepare him, right down to the long underwear, but I knew he was going to get sick otherwise and, sure enough, he did. Not that he cared. He’d have gone again with the cold if it meant he’d get to have the fun he’d had on Halloween night.

s Halloween inches closer, I find myself getting quite excited for all of the upcoming festivities that this time of year entails. The pumpkins adorning doorsteps, the spooky decorations peeking out of windows, and boxes of chocolate filling up store shelves … It all symbolizes a time to bring out the inner child in each of us. After all, most of us probably have fantastic memories of Halloween, as children. Getting dressed up in costumes, walking the neighbourhood with our buddies and trick-or-treating until it was too cold to continue or houses were beginning to turn their lights out. It was always tough to go to bed that night (even harder to get up for school the next morning), but I have a feeling that sugar had a little something to do with that. I can still remember my sister and I bringing in our bags of loot and dumping them out on the dining-room table after a successful trick-or-treating run. And I recall the rule we had to follow about our mom needing to check the candy over, first, before we could have anything. She had to make

heard what we were doing, she really fell in love with the whole concept.” Isaak finds he often writes about the same kinds of topics– things that make him tick. Often, the topics are vast, and Isaak says he likes the idea of finding “the silver lining in dark clouds.” Putting positive spins on difficulties in life is something he finds helps him and can hopefully help those his music reaches as well. “Love and all that comes with it is always in the forefront, but things like spiritualism and everyday life are always in the mix,” he said. “This new album has three spiritual songs on it and that is more than I normally have on my records.” The 1930s New Orleans direction of the new record sets it apart from Isaak’s previous releases. “I can’t say it’s my best record to date but many have told me they think it is,” he admitted. For Isaak, writing songs and practising guitar every day for hours is not a chore or somePHOTO: Christian Kuntz thing he needs to Whitehorse-born blues songster Brandon Isaak released his newest album One Step Closer, in September. find motivation to do; rather, it’s an intrinsic need and Brandon Isaak now lives on Vancouver Island, but the Yukon will always be his home

t’s been a while since we caught up with Brandon Isaak. Far from idling since our last conversation, the Whitehorseborn blues songster has been hard at work writing, recording and promoting his newest album, One Step Closer, the follow-up to 2021’s Modern Primitive, all the while still touring and performing, and even buying a house on Vancouver Island. “It was such a treat to make this new album, and a real learning experience,” Isaak told What’s Up Yukon. “I have played in New Orleans many times and wanted to pull some of that vibe from the French Quarter into my new record.” Calling upon some friends on the island who are well-versed in NOLA-style music, Isaak was able to create One Step Closer completely from the comfort of his new home, in which he’d built a music studio.

“I was blessed to have these older veteran musicians bless our crib with their amazing grasp on Dixie and old 1930s Jazz,” Isaak continued. “It’s always such a treat to see how these veteran musicians approach this music. I was floored with the wealth of knowledge and the skill these gentlemen played with. We’re blessed to have some of the best musicians in the country living here on the island. I went with old-school recording techniques like using just a couple ribbon microphones with vintage preamps and compressors. Just picking up the drums from afar really added to the feel and sound of the old records I love.” One Step Closer also proved to be a lesson in trusting the process, as Isaak explained. “My wife thought I was nuts when I told her the tuba, clarinet and washboard player were on their way over, but after she

Cover art what he lives for. Creating music clears his head and helps keep his emotions in check. Beyond music, Isaak also engages in painting, sculpting and African dance routines. “I feel like I’m the most blessed man on Earth [in] being able to make art for a living and spreading positive, good vibes to the people,” he explained. “I think if you spend your whole life making art in any form, that’s a life well lived and you’re making the world a better place.” Since Isaak’s wife and agent Cindy Mae took the reins, Isaak has seen great progress in his growth as a musician and performer, especially from a business perspective. He’s stopped playing in venues like pubs, restaurants and bars for free, and has been able to secure more paying gigs for invested audiences. “Don’t get me wrong, I cut my teeth playing these kinds of gigs, and it’s important for young musicians to do these types of shows

to learn their craft and hone their chops,” he said. “That being said, I’m playing a quarter as much now but making real money doing what I love. So we’ll keep moving in this direction. We’re playing more festivals and slowly but surely getting our music out there more and more. “It’s all about the journey, and Cindy Mae and I love to travel together and are enjoying the ride. We’ve taken a break from playing overseas and are focussing on our home country of Canada right now. There is too much going on right here and we are working hard at breaking new ground every day.” While Isaak says he’s his own worst critic and nothing ever seems good enough for him, he’s ultimately proud of how One Step Closer turned out and is grateful for the praise it’s receiving. “I’m getting a lot of great response for my new song “What’s This World Coming To,” he said. “It deals with some of the problems of the world today like gun violence, lying politicians and residential schools.” Though he lives on Vancouver Island, now, the yukon remains dear to Isaak’s heart, and he will never forget his roots. “The Yukon will always be home, and I’m still thrilled to come back home and play for my hometown people.” To keep up with Brandon Isaak, visit brandonisaak.ca. n

THE TRAPPER’S LIFE

Sonja Seeber

Sonja Seeber and her husband Paul are Yukon trappers who live in the Pelly Mountains and have developed a lifelong passion for the trapping lifestyle in the North.

ANOTHER TRAPPING SEASON IS HERE Snow came late this year. It was October 5 by the time we saw white on the ground outside the cabin. We received 17 centimetres of snow, but four days later the rain washed it all away. So, we all received the wake-up call that winter will be coming to the Yukon this year as well. That means we’ll have to bring our camp in order: clean and cover the sawmill, put tools back in their places and pump water before the ice starts growing out from shore. I’m thinking of winter gear: Do my winter boots need repair? And what about my new snowmobiling jacket? (It’s too big, so out comes the sewing machine.) Traps will have to

Planning for the next winter season We start planning while still on the line, in April. I do the inventory of all the foods leftover, punch it all into a new column in the existing Excel sheet, and voilà! … we see exactly what we had in September, what is left in April and what we consumed inbetween. Right away, a new shopping list will be written. Then, once we drive to Whitehorse, the first time we’re back in civilization, we already start buying dry foods, spare parts, bolts and nails. Then in the summer months we boat up and mill the logs we hauled into camp during the win-

are therefore called “deciduous conifer trees.” My favourite thing to do in the fall is berry picking. The only ones that did well, though, were the juniper and highbush cranberries; and the few blueberries we had, the mallards ate (it was a lot of fun watching them comb through

After that, Old Man Winter is welcome, since trapping season starts November 1 and it would help a lot if the side channels and creeks will be frozen over by then, with 50 centimetres of snow cover. That’s the perfect scenario—but oftentimes we’ll get snow but no cold temperatures, or it’s the other way around.

Clayton’s CAR CARE Tips

MAKE IT A HABIT Having good visibility on snowy roads can make all the difference. You will be able to see things clearly and avoid accidents and injuries. Here are a few tips to sharpen your vision and ensure a safe drive at night. First, check your lights. It is important to check your headlights that includes fog lamps, driving lights and brake lights if they are working properly before heading out. It is also important to visit your local mechanics if your vehicle requires to adjust or change your headlight bulb or if it requires some cleaning in order to have a safe and enjoyable drive.

Another trapping season is here ... cont’d from page 13 berries around, this grizzly, captured by a wildlife camera on October 1, doesn’t look too fat yet and I’m wondering when he’ll be off to hibernate. I’m guessing not before the beginning of December. So, stay vigilant, people. Once there is a layer of snow on the ground, I can go look for mouse trails: many mice usually means a good marten year. When seeing marten tracks, one can discern by the size if it’s a female or a male. Females are quite a bit smaller. We saw two of last-year’s male moose, the other day, munching on willows. I hope they’ll stay together so that they have a better chance against the wolves. The muskrat is still able to swim the side channel and eat its herbs and grasses on shore. Eventually, the rain comes down, the clouds change their shapes, and their colors range from light grey to light black. Glad to be able to feed the wood stove another piece of firewood. Migrating birds When boating up the river in the summer, we enjoy seeing Canada geese, common mergansers, belted kingfishers and some kind of sandpipers breeding along it. At camp, the dark-eyed juncos rear their young on maggots (to be found under the tree bark from when we mill the logs). A family of

common snipes hung around, but they’re very shy. If they’re staying put, you won’t see them until you nearly step on them. Once the weather changes, in October, we start seeing sandhill cranes flying over. On October 19, about a total of five big flocks of them flew over (we love their eerie calling). Tundra swans show up during the night, mostly, and stay until they’re rested well enough and have eaten their fill. For the first time this year, we’ve watched, for a day, a flock of Pacific loons. Surf scoter, lesser scaup and Barrow’s goldeneye are the other ones not minding being wet from below and above. The American robin, var-

ied thrushes, the brown-headed cowbird and Bohemian waxwings all head south; eventually the juncos, too. The birds that stay are pine grosbeaks, crossbills and sometimes common redpolls. Of course, there are chickadees and woodpeckers. As for the bats, we built them a real bat house, but it’s obviously not in a spot they treasure. They’d rather get stuck between the poly and boards of the old outhouse! And yes, they leave when we get the first few colder nights.

getting cracks and getting mealy. What to do? I took about four kilos and prepared them for future baking, putting the bags of apple slices in the freezer. The carrots didn’t even do well in a box, covered in sand, so back out of the dark cellar they came and got canned. Onions and potatoes are doing okay, but never ever try to haul pears into the bush! Alas, nearly daily I am found in the cellar, checking on the produce. Have a safe and quiet fall and winter, and enjoy some apple pies!

Food We always purchase Gala apples, but this year they started
