MORE?

I

t has been observed every year since with the intention of raising awareness about the significance of mountains and highlighting “the importance of sustainable mountain development” (un.org/en/observances/mountainday). This year’s theme is “restoring mountain ecosystems” and aims to “raise awareness and foster collective efforts to promote nature-based solutions, best practices and investments that enhance resilience, reduce vulnerability and enable mountain ecosystems and communities to adapt to present and future challenges” (fao.org/ international-mountain-day/ photo-contest/en) Cultures around the world have revered and honoured mountains for thousands of years, believing them to be the source of life, providers of healing and blessings, beacons of spiritual energy, guardians and protectors, the home of the gods, and the place where the soul goes after the body passes away. In certain parts of the world, people pray to the mountains they consider sacred and leave them offerings, attempting to connect with their power. Some ancient cultures used them as burial sites while others have made pilgrimages to specific mountains for generations. According to the United Nations, mountains host 25 of the

Colourful Palcoyo in Peru world’s 34 biodiversity hotspots and provide fresh water, for everyday life, to an estimated half of humanity or more. They are the “water towers” of the Earth, and without them life as we know it would not be possible. Mountains determine global and regional climates, and of the 20 plant species that supply 80 per cent of the world’s food, six species (maize, potatoes, barley, sorghum, tomatoes and apples) originated in the mountains (cbd. int/mountain/IMD.shtml). Sadly, mountains and their ecosystems are under threat from climate change, contamination (the Food Agriculture Organization of the United Nations claims that microplastics have even been found as high as the summit of Mount Everest), unsustainable development, exploitation and land degradation. Worldwide warming temperatures are causing glaciers to melt at alarming rates, while avalanches, mudslides, flooding and extreme ero-

sion are becoming more and more frequent. Mountain communities, while exceptionally resilient and home to incredibly diverse cultures and traditional knowledge systems, are struggling to deal with the rapidly changing conditions. Mountains and their inhabitants are exceedingly vulnerable to the global changes taking place right now. If you’ve ever climbed a mountain you probably noticed the powerful effect it can have on you. It can be a way to reset your mind, to inspire you, to stimulate creativity and to find clarity. When hiking in high altitudes where low atmospheric pressure results in lower oxygen saturation levels, there’s a point where you have to accept the limits of your body and where everything narrows down to just your breath. Instead of thinking, you begin to feel more and, with each step, the brain becomes less predominant. cont’d on page 3 ...

IDEAS FOR CELEBRATING INTERNATIONAL MOUNTAIN DAY

Iconic Matterhorn in Switzerland

1.

Learn the names of the mountains around where you live (if possible, also learn their original, traditional names as these tell a story and may give you insight into the history of these places).

2.

Watch a mountain-related documentary like Meru or 180° South (both available at the Whitehorse Public Library).

3.

Make plans, with friends, to hike some of the Yukon’s peaks next summer.

4.

Get involved by finding out more about projects like Mountain Research Initiative (mountainresearchinitiative.org), Mountain Partnership (fao.org/mountain-partnership/en/) and Protect Our Winters (protectourwinters.org).

5.

Get some Christmas shopping done by picking up a few copies of the Yukon Hiking 2024 calendars (available online at yukonhiking.ca, as well as locally at Coast Mountain Sports, Mac’s Fireweed Books, and Winterlong Brewing Co.).

6.

Best way of all: go outside and spend time in the mountains—responsibly, respectfully and enthusiastically.

SOME MOUNTAIN-RELATED FUN FACTS

View from Mount White in the Yukon, looking south towards B.C.’s Mount Minto

There’s much to be learned from being in the mountains. Even as children, we feel drawn to them, wanting to see the top and wondering what lies on the other side. Some say that mountains are like the antennas of the earth and that ancient civilizations (who lived in places where there

were no mountains) constructed pyramids in an attempt to create a substitute. For us, here in the Yukon, the mountains are our home. As John Muir famously wrote, “The mountains are calling”; and now, more than ever, they need us to answer. n

1.

A person who loves mountains is called an “orophile.”

2.

The most-mountainous country in the world is Bhutan. Mountains cover 98.8 per cent of its total area. (worldpopulationreview.com/country-rankings/most-mountainous-countries).

3.

Bhutan prohibited all mountaineering above 6,000m (20,000 ft.), in 1994, due to spiritual/religious beliefs.

4.

Mount Logan is not only the highest point in Canada, but also the second highest in North America (after Denali in Alaska).

5.

The world’s largest mountain range is actually under the sea. The global mid-ocean ridge system stretches nearly 65,000 kilometres. In comparison, the world’s longest above-water mountain range is the Andes, which is only about 7,000 km long.

6.

Breathing thin mountain air, regularly, has numerous health benefits such as improving the functioning of the lungs and respiratory system, enhancing the body’s natural healing process, promoting deep and restful sleep, reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease and giving the lungs a break from toxins and allergens. Our body compensates for a reduction in oxygen by increasing our red blood cells. (www.ovonetwork.com/blog/visit-mountains-summer).

Elsie Jordan Elsie Jordan made the Yukon her home in 2014. She has a passion for storytelling, with a focus on family (mis)adventures featuring a unique Yukon feel to them.

SANTA CLAUS THE ELF ON THE SHELF IS COMING TO TOWN And so it begins …

W

hen I first mention to people that I am thinking about starting the Elf on the Shelf tradition with my son, I am met with two types of reactions: the first is one of utter excitement, accompanied by an eagerness to share tips, ideas and past experiences that have lit up the holiday season for their own little ones. The second reaction is far different: it’s a mixture of an inward sigh of exhaustion and a desire to warn me about what I was getting myself into. After all, this is a multi-year commitment. You don’t just do this as a one-off. My son is three and he will likely be expecting and anticipating his elf’s annual return, for a good number of years. If I am going to do this, I am in it for the long haul. There’s no going back … which is why I have listened to many a warning of how to begin and navigate this festive, yet labour-

intensive tradition. For many parents and caregivers who take part in this holiday tradition, December 1st marks the beginning of a 24-day journey of creating memorable daily experiences for their children. After all, the little ones wake up each morning expecting to find their dutiful scout elf displayed in funny, creative and entertaining ways. Whether they are swinging from a ceiling fan, baking cheerio-sized donuts or reading a book to some stuffed animals, the mystery of what their elf will be doing next is something that many children look forward to uncovering each day. And for many parents, this can be a lot of fun. Personally, I am having a fantastic time planning out ideas for how my son’s elf, whom he

Mom’s original 1960s Elf

makes my husband happy, as he feared I was going to go a Elf buddies little overboard the first year and set the bar very high for the many years to come. “He’s only three,” many people have said, implying that I can start out with simple things like hiding him in funny places around the house for my son to find (especially since my son is brand-new to this and is still at an age where he is very easily entertained). Plus, given that my husband and I are PHOTOS: Elsie Jordan nerdy folk, with has tentatively named Apples- plenty of collectables throughout Oranges-Grapes (we’ll call him our home, AOG has many friends AOG for short), is going to surprise him in the morning. I have been pouring over Pinterest pages, googling fun ideas and talking to as many people as I can about what they have done. And, boy, there is a lot to go through. Luckily, I have found that it certainly doesn’t need to cost an arm and a leg to accomplish these daily presentations. Sure, you can go out and buy the kits from the stores, which include costumes, props and pets for the elves. But, parents have also come to realize that a lot of what you can do, can be done using things you can make or find at home. In fact, some crafty souls here, in town, recently hosted a workshop for making easy props for Elf on the Shelf, and I’m kicking myself for not noticing it sooner. I’m sure it could have been a lot of fun. I’ve also found that the Elf on the Shelf website is a great place to find free printables—a fact that

to interact with over the course of his 24 visits to our house. Now, that’s not to say that I don’t understand why some parents find this tradition to be a little tiring over time. Like I said earlier, it is a long commitment and the holidays are already a busy time of year. I’m sure that some nights, trying to make sure you get something fun ready is adding a lot to an already full plate, which is why so many parents have stressed the importance of having a plan in place—just to make it easier than having to think of something on the spot, or forgetting to do it altogether. It’s definitely going to take a lot of work, time and creativity, but I’m looking forward to beginning this tradition with my little boy. I still have my Elf on the Shelf from when I was little, and seeing him on my Christmas tree, each year, brings me a lot of joy. He’s a retired scout elf, dating back from the ’60s, so I’m sure he’ll have a lot of wisdom to pass on to AOG this time around. Heck, maybe he’ll even share some tips with me as well. n

WHISTLE DOG TAQUITO

Cooked mushrooms and onions

Tortilla, hot dogs and cheese

Stuffed with cheese

Wrapped in bacon

Roasted until bacon is cooked

Wrapped in a tortilla

T

his may seem like something you’d feed some kids (and it could be!), but don’t relegate hot dogs to kid food. They’re always good. Especially with the ski hill about to open, these will make one hell of a post-ski snack.

Ingredients: ❑ 4 hot dogs ❑ 2 slices cheese (Kraft singles, so good)

❑ 4 strips of bacon ❑ 4 small tortillas ❑ Oil, to brush on the tortilla

Instructions: 1. Set oven at 450 F. Slice each hot dog halfway through, then stuff each one with cheese. Wrap hot dogs in bacon, then place on a baking sheet with the cheese facing up. Cook until bacon is done and cheese is melted, about 7 minutes. 2. Remove the hot dogs from the oven and wrap each with a small tortilla so the seam of the tortillas is on the bottom but the cheese stays on top. Brush each tortilla with oil and place back into the oven to cook until tortillas are crispy, about 4 minutes. Serve with condiments. Serves 4 (or two hungry people!). n

BLUE CAMAS, BLUE CAMAS

B

lue Camas, Blue Camas is a new children’s book, written by Danielle S. Marcotte and illustrated by Alyssa Koski, that tells the story of a flower native to the Northwest Coast of North America and considered a sacred and valuable plant by the Indigenous Peoples of this region. “Why I came up with this book is that I like to give myself challenges as a writer,” said Marcotte. “I was wondering if I would be able to explain to young people the concept of cultural differences. Even adults have difficulty understanding cultural differences, and it’s really important in Canadian society because we’re such a grouping of people from all over the world, and it’s changing all the time.” Intended for the four to eight age range, Blue Camas, Blue Camas takes place at the point of

contact between a Lkwungen community and a group of Irish settlers who see the land in very different ways. The picture book is an ode to a way of life that was threatened and nearly destroyed through miscommunication and colonization, and it aims to raise awareness about food rights, biodiversity and the preservation of ecosystems, in a way that children can understand and discuss. “In my view, if you respect the emotions of other people, you bring social justice and peace to your society,” said Marcotte. “Respect is at the heart of a peaceful society that will thrive.” As Marcotte explains, the book centers on two children of two different cultures looking at the same piece of land and seeing different things. bulbs that her family can cook and eat, as well as exchange for other goods, while an Irish boy sees nothing of use because the agriculture they are used to would not include these bulbs. “It’s interesting when you write for young people you have

Dear Yukoners, May the bright northern lights and the warmth of family and friends bring you comfort and joy this holiday season. Wishing everyone all the best in the New Year. to reduce the vocabulary and use simple sentences,” said Marcotte. “Yet, in this particular case, but very often in children’s literature, you have to convey a complex situation, not just at one level but at many different levels—hence the challenge.” While Marcotte does not choose the illustrators who work on her stories, she was very pleased to see what Koski did with this book. Koski—who sees bittersweetness in tragedy, and resiliency in Indigenous stories—likes to use colour to bring these kinds of stories to life visually. “In Blue Camas Blue Camas, we see a changing world through the eyes of a young Lkwungen girl. I wanted to represent her feelings of comfort and support with her environment, the land she is familiar with as she harvests the blue camas with her community,” said Koski, who is a member of the Kainai Nation. “I tried to do this with the use of bright and lush colours and the thorough representation of plants and animals that are native to the area. There are some really gorgeous flowers that are natural to the Vancouver Island area, and I had a great time researching that in particular, as

I also wanted to show the great variety in plant life. Then when the European settlers came and started to take over the land, I wanted to show this change. I decreased the colour saturation on all the areas touched by the settlers because I wanted to show how the locals may have felt, seeing the land that was always vibrant and varied and that has provided for them for generations … be altered so dramatically in the farming process. I wanted it to look like it was stripped of its life by stripping it of its colour. But I also didn’t want it to be completely void of colour.” Marcotte is often up in the Yukon, and she finds inspiration from the land, the people and the stories of the territory. She has written stories set in the Yukon before and already has plans for more. Blue Camas, Blue Camas is available now via Heritage House Publishing. “Blue Camas, Blue Camas is a very accessible story for children but also a deeply symbolic story that adults would benefit from reading too,” said Koski. GROWING HOME

Grow Home example in Porter Creek

Crestview units

In the 1990s decade, about 6,000 Grow homes were built in Montreal, and as many across Canada and the USA

F

or Montreal architects Avi Friedman and Witold Rybczynski, the originators of the Grow Home, it became their landmark project of the ’90s. The World Habitat Awards organization was also very pleased with Grow Home and granted Friedman, a McGill University professor, a prestigious award, in 1999, for his innovative home-building concept meant to provide homeownership for low-income households and first-time home buyers. The key features of the original Grow Home? An affordable, narrow 1,200-square-foot, 3-level townhouse that would “grow” with the owners. Forget the turnkey build: the buyer of a Grow Home could opt for an unfinished basement or an unpartitioned second floor (or both) to complete at a later date, as the need arose and their bank account grew. Hence, the growing phase. Turned out that most Grow Home owners ended up fin-

ishing their basement or second floor, often by themselves, as new skills were learned. With a narrow design, more units could be built on the same lot, saving on land-development expenses. Four or five units were built under one roof, saving on building costs, too. Uncomplicated rooflines and simple construction methods boast the package envisioned by the Montreal architects. However, it didn’t mean cheap finishing, as masonry was used for exterior siding, and units were well soundproofed. The interior layout was optimized, as well, with a single-facade window or a balcony on the second floor—another key feature of the Grow Home. Fast-forward 20 years: Whitehorse contractors began building townhouses bearing the Friedman signature, knowingly or not. In the 2010s decade, these new townhouses sprung up from the ground in newly developed areas of Porter Creek and Crestview. To this day, units are still being built in the Brookside Development in Crestview. Despite matching the original design from the outside, some features of the Grow Home were dropped once they were built North of 60. Many Whitehorse versions of the Grow Home were built larger than the initial 14’ x 36’ plotted by Friedman, trending with a larger dwelling size all across North America. The average U.S. newly-

PHOTOS: Gabrielle Dupont

Grow homes with basement apartment built house in 1990 was 2,000 sq. ft. It had jumped just shy of 2,700 sq. ft. by 2015. Canadian houses followed similar trajectories. At 1,200 sq. ft., the 1990 basic Grow Home model had one bathroom and a compact kitchen, while 2010’s Whitehorse versions have multiple bathrooms, walk-in closets and a kitchen island. The idea of “growing” with the house was also scrapped in Whitehorse. Instead, buyers got keys to a finished two-storey townhouse plus a fully functional basement. The idea that a young couple or a small family would want to finish their basement at their own pace and budget was replaced with a fully finished basement

rental suite or, in some cases, a semi-suite with a shared kitchen upstairs. It meant an increase of living units under one roof, and possible rental income. For Whitehorse buyers, it also meant a much-larger purchase price, but it was still reasonable for three finished floors. The Grow Home of the 1990s could be built for around $40,000 and be sold for twice as much, depending how move-inready you wanted it to be. According to the Bank of Canada Inflation Calculator, it would amount to a $160,000 price tag in 2023 dollars. Still recovering from succeeding recessions, the 1990’s Canadian housing industry jumped both feet in with Friedman’s concept of an

affordable townhouse. Serious inflation in the early 1990s had people squeezed, with ever-increasing rent, and willing to consider owning a home, even with a mortgage rate averaging 8 per cent. At the same time, big and small governments had reduced the social-housing investment for low-income families. It was a breath of fresh air for the housing industry where buyers could sustainably buy their own home. Small, private contractors had a larger customer pool. Win-win. As we are seeing a similar trend in inflation and mortgage rates, these days, we may want (up here in the North) to revisit the Grow Home. n

People experience odd smells while walking in the forest

U

sually the source is evident, but not always. Sasquatch enthusiasts have advanced the notion that the creature uses scent as a deterrent to keep intruders away. Here are two examples: During the summer of 1984, a gentleman who, at the time, was working for Yukon Parks and Recreation, was checking for an appropriate location to construct a new campground on Tatchun Lake. Along with his crew, they checked a few locations. As it was getting late in the afternoon, he let his crew return to Whitehorse while he decided to check one last spot. He arrived at the presentday location of the Tatchun Lake Campground, parked his vehicle and started walking around. Satisfied that this location would be appropriate for a new campground, he made his way back to his truck while walking over and around the many trees felled by the wind—trees that would be useful for firewood. At one point, his foot slipped and a broken branch impaled his lower left leg. There he was, laying partly on the tree and partly on the ground, in pain. Then for some reason, it became very quiet around him: no birds flying or chirping, no squirrels moving about, and no wind. Dead calm. Then there was a pungent, eye-watering smell. His first thought was that a bear was close by, but it smelled worse than any bear he had ever encountered. So, what was it? He could not identify any animals that would smell that bad. The stink lasted a couple of minutes, then was gone suddenly, it seemed, and the forest was alive again. The gentleman, now over his shock, managed to free himself from the broken branch and made it to his truck where he bandaged up his leg and then drove to the Whitehorse General Hospital. Another “stinky occurrence” took place near Frenchman Lake in July of 2003. A lady friend of the Tr’ondëk

Frenchman Lake Hwëch’in First Nation and I were lazily fishing while canoeing around the northern shores of the lake when, at one point, we entered a small bay, about three kilometres west of the Frenchman Lake Campground, where a strong, sickening stench came upon us, seemingly encompassing us. I jokingly told my paddling partner to stop farting, then the smell became stronger. I would describe the smell as dirty diapers mixed with pig manure and dog excrement (enough to make your eyes water and take your breath away). Then I noticed that the forest had become silent—a dead calm— with no birds flying or chirping and no small animals running around foraging for food. No wind. Nothing! We paddled towards shore with the intention of finding the cause of this smell. Oddly, upon reaching the shore, the smell had disappeared completely. The immediate area was totally calm and quiet for a short while. Then, gradually, the area came back to life and we could see squirrels and birds, and the trees were swaying in the gentle breeze.

We spent the next 20 minutes looking around. The area was mostly covered by lodgepole pines and black spruce, with small poplar trees closer to the water. An animal trail lead to the water, as well as the usual array of wild plants and flowers. But there was no sign of a dead animal … nothing indicating the cause of the stink. Upon returning home to Whitehorse, I did an online search for possible causes of such smells and discovered that a retired biologist from the Oregon National Primate Research Center, Dr. W. Fahrenbach, had studied the subject and considered that such a smell could be produced by sasquatch as a way to defuse possible encounters with animals or humans, in much the same way that mountain gorillas do this (studied and reported by American primatologist and conservationist, Dian Fossey). Odd smell occurrences of this sort have been reported to me previously and would seem to be another unusual manner by which our legendary forest friend would keep people away. I have returned to both locations several times since, but have not experienced anything similar. n

If you sense your car drifts or pulls to one side, you could have a wheel alignment problem. The alignment of your vehicle’s wheels can affect the way it handles. Your car may drive fine, but when you look at your tires, you may notice that they are wearing. Your steering wheel could also feel not centred. Our team of professionals can align your wheels by placing your vehicle on a wheel alignment machine. This machine uses laser guided measurements to allow our mechanic to set and adjust the suspension components back to the factory specifications. You can prevent the impact of wear and tear on your tires, reduce pulling and feel confident in a safer drive. Tire Shop: MON-SAT 7:30-5:30 Mechanical Shop: MON-FRI 8-5

BROADWAY COMES TO WHITEHORSE A group of alumni from the Yukon Theatre for Young People in Whitehorse has formed a new theatre collective called Candlestick Theatre Society and will be presenting its first production, Be More Chill: The Broadway Musical, from December 7-17 at the Heart of Riverdale Blackbox Theatre

T

he idea to stage a Yukon production of Be More Chill - The Broadway Musical as a whole started when director, producer, actor and co-founder of Whitehorse’s new Candlestick Theatre Society, Gabriel Hopkins, realized there was a lack of live entertainment happening this fall and winter. “We spent a long time deliberating over what show we should do,” Hopkins tells What’s Up Yukon. “A variety show would be cheap and easy to make, but I really wanted us to start strong to prove to the world that we had what it takes to make a quality production on our own.” After spending some time figuring out what show would make the perfect debut for the new theatre company, made up of alumni from the Yukon Theatre for Young People, landed on a show that many of them loved when they were younger. “Being about teenagers, I used to think it was annoying, but that’s only when I was a teenager myself,” Hopkins admits. “Once

tively small cast size, familiarity, and modern setting made it the perfect show to put together on such short notice, and with what (admittedly very little) budget we had.” Be More Chill is a musical with

Halia Pealow, left and Ella Laliberty same name by Ned Vizzini. It follows an average teenager named Jeremy Heere, played in this production by Hopkins himself. When the character finds out about “The Squip,” a tiny supercomputer that promises to bring him everything he desires most: a date with Christine, an invite to the party of the year and a chance to survive life in his suburban New Jersey high school, he must decide if being the most popular guy in school is worth the risk. “Once we decided on the show I began work on everything

I could,” says Hopkins. “Being the director, producer, and main character is a lot of work, and I’ve had to learn pretty much everything as I’ve been going along, but I’m not without help. With a board full of some of my best friends and an outstanding amount of help from some of the best producers in the Yukon, though I may be biased as one of them is my mother, we’ve pushed past every hurdle that has come our way.” Hopkins found he was able to relate to his character, saying he wasn’t exactly what you’d describe as a cool kid in high school, though there are some differences between his own outlook and that of his character. .“I understand the isolation of being the nerd, and not having very many friends, however, as an introvert, I didn’t really have a desire to climb the social ladder in the way that Jeremy does,” he explains. “Luckily for me, I am also a huge drama nerd, and took refuge in a full four semesters of the MAD program which gave me all of the connections I could ever have wanted.” Another point of the story Hopkins says he relates to goes beyond his high school days and into the more recent years of his life, as he’s struggled to find a purpose or somewhere to succeed. “I have found that in this company I made, filled with my friends and allies, whereas Jeremy looks to find it in a super-computer meant to ‘fix’ him,” he continues. “I am so grateful to have all the support I do, and if the Jeremy character did too, I doubt he would’ve gone down such a drastic route to find his sense of purpose.”

While Hopkins doesn;t expect nightly sell-outs or to be heaped with praise in the streets, he hopes to generate some interest and funding for the next Candlestick production with this show. Be More Chill runs December 7-17 with a show each night, except for December 15, at 8 p.m. at the Heart of Riverdale’s Blackbox Theatre. Tickets can be purchased on Eventbrite at this link: https:// www.eventbrite.ca/e/be-morechill-the-broadway-musical-tickets-763662905307. “Overall this experience has helped me realize that even at 20 years old, it’s never too early, or too late, to follow your dreams, and to just try your best at something,” Hopkins says. “Who knows, maybe it’ll just work, and if you have all of the amazing people surrounding you that I do, it’s hard not to find all the help you could ever need. I love this town, I really do, and the people in it have been very kind to me. So I just want to say thank you to everyone who has ever supported me, or ever will.” n
