SANTA’S MAGIC I

remember, as a child, lining up behind all the other kids, wearing my best dress and impatiently waiting my turn to sit on Santa’s knee and ask for something special for Christmas. This was typically followed by enthusiastically taking my candy cane as we waited for the picture to develop. It always made for a fantastic conclusion to a fun family day spent on the snowy streets of Toronto while watching the Santa Claus Parade. I also recall always asking my parents how Santa was able to get to the mall so quickly after his ride on the giant float, and my father usually replied with something like “That’s Santa magic.”

Oh, how I love Santa magic. There is something very special about the relationship children have with Santa—and the wonder he brings out in the eyes of youngsters when they catch a glimpse of the big man in red. And, that is not to say that it always begins on a positive note. In fact, one of my first pictures with Santa shows me as a sobbing

Hanging on my tree toddler wanting to get away as quickly as possible. Sure, Santa can be scary, but if you’re lucky, that fear eventually subsides and you’re left with a feeling of excitement whenever you spot that white beard and hear that hearty “Ho ho ho!” Because, honestly, who can resist singing along with Bruce Springsteen’s rendition of “Santa Claus Is Comin’ To Town” when it comes on the radio? I definitely cannot. And I’m happy that I now have a backup singer in my little boy, who claims this to be his favourite carol (at least for the time being). It just puts you in a good mood—plus, it doesn’t hurt that the song helps provide a little bit extra behaviour incentive for my rambunctious preschooler. And, I have to say, I’ve been

Santa’s Magic ... cont’d from page 2 greatly enjoying how much my son has begun to embrace the idea of Santa this year. At three, he has a much better understanding of who Santa is and what he is going to be doing come Christmas Eve. He’s eager for Christmas morning and he’s hoping for some fun gifts under the tree; yet, I couldn’t help but laugh when I asked him what he was going to ask Santa for this year and he replied with, “A drink.” Fair enough. I won’t be surprised if Santa leaves him a juice box in his stocking this year. Although, when it was time to

make the trip to take a photo with Santa, this year, I don’t think he asked for anything. He easily walked up and sat on Santa’s knee, with no sign of fear. He posed for the picture and said he enjoyed the experience, but I think he was still a little in awe of who he was meeting. Santa is such a new concept for him, and while he isn’t one of the children who is afraid of him, there is a mystery about him that my son is still trying to make sense of. I know this will only make more and more sense to him as he grows, and I’m sure that next year he will

eagerly write a letter to mail to the North Pole and bake cookies to leave for Santa on Christmas Eve. We’ll get there, and we’ll experience all of the joys I remember as a child. I can’t wait. And in the Yukon, we are lucky because the city is aglow with holiday merriment, hosting many festive events for families to take part in during the Christmas season, many of which include an opportunity for children to share a special moment with dear old St. Nick and experience a little bit of the magic that he brings with him. I will always have a very special place in my heart for Santa Claus,

Elsie, as a child, meeting Santa

and I will always be thankful to my family for helping create those memories of him for me, whether it was taking me to the parade each year or telling me stories about him by the fireplace on cold December nights. They always encouraged my belief in Santa, and because of that he remains ingrained into my childhood and is a part of so many precious memories of the holiday season. I sing about him, hang up ornaments of his likeness and now embrace my chance to introduce him to my own child. What about that isn’t truly magical? ■

The selection process for the music presented in this concert series was no small task in itself. Presetting music from different eras to show the centuries-lasting impact of early music is the driving idea behind these performances, and it was important for Janke to stick with that vision. “We have commissioned new works with this theme in mind,” he said. “We are also adapting and performing some works from the period. I also worked with Nick Turnbull, to choose repertoire that would suit the group. Some of our interpretations will

LNS Artistic Director Daniel Janke conducting the Problematic Orchestra on December 20 and 21, the latter of which is, fittingly, the longest night of the year. In these shows, the Problematic Orchestra will perform music from a variety of eras, showing the influence that the pre-Renaissance, Renaissance and Baroque eras have on modern music. “I have long observed that certain elements of early music, the stark harmonies, forms of plain song and chant, are often revisited in contemporary music,” said LNS artistic director Daniel Janke. “In some ways, it may be a reaction against the complexities of serialism, and modernism in general. There is a desire for simpler music. This concert is a chance for us to investigate that realm.” Problematic Orchestra is the Yukon’s own semi-professional chamber orchestra, administered by LNS. Clayton’s CAR CARE Tips

BATTERY Batteries store energy that is needed to start your vehicle, there are a few things to remember about batteries. Regular maintenance #1 is making sure the battery is secured properly so it doesn’t vibrate, keeping connections clean and tight at the terminal, with loose connections you may run into problems like vehicles won’t start, alternator not charging properly and could cause battery and alternator failure. Making sure your battery is ready for the colder weather we see in the Yukon like adding a battery pad or battery blanket to keep it warm when the vehicle is not in use; by keeping the battery warm in colder weather you will get the most power out of the battery on start up. Here is a side tip: if you don’t drive your vehicle on a regular basis and are experiencing battery problems, you could ask you local mechanic to install a low amp battery maintainer; this will keep your battery fully charged even when the vehicle is parked for a long time.

In a matter of a couple of days we enjoyed snowy landscapes high in the mountains, colonial towns surrounded by vibrant green scenery, as well as semi-arid countrysides filled with cactus-bearing juicy tuna (prickly pear fruit) in every colour imaginable. Peru’s incredible diversity was evident with every passing kilometre, not only in terms of its climate,

originating on the mountain of Huascarán and buried the town of Yungay, killing approximately 20,000 people (only 400 survived). A giant cemetery and poignant memorial were built where the old town existed, and the new Yungay was rebuilt nearby. About 50 kilometres down the road lies Huaraz, the capital of the department of Ancash, the largest city in the Callejón de Huaylas valley, and the jumping-off point

mately 1200 BC. It was occupied by the Chavin culture and was believed to have been used as a ceremonial and religious centre. An incredible maze of tunnels and passageways exist below the monumental stone buildings and within the maze an intricatelycarved granite stela (El Lanzón de Chavin). The Chavin National Museum located nearby has an impressive collection of artifacts from the site.

Believed to have been a ceremonial centre, it offers astounding views of the nearby Laguna de Pacucha and the surrounding mountains. Located at over 3,000 metres, Pampachiri is filled with countless large coneshaped rocks in an otherworldly landscape said to have formed millions of years ago after nearby volcanic eruptions. Some of these rock formations have been made into homes which have affectionately become known as Casa de los Pitufos (Smurfs house).

FRIED KABOCHA SQUASH

PHOTOS: Sydney Keddy

K

abocha is a favourite squash because you don’t have to peel it, just give it a good clean, take out the seeds and you’re good to go! This simple batter can work for a variety of vegetables or even fish, so once you’ve started, try frying whatever else you have on hand. But always be careful of hot oil, and let the pan cool completely before you try to move it or discard the oil.

INGREDIENTS ❑ 1 cup all-purpose flour ❑ 1 cup water ❑ 1/2 cup beer ❑ 1 egg, beaten ❑ 1 tsp salt ❑ Kabocha squash, cut into ¼-inch slices

Fry the squash

❑ Oil for frying

METHOD: 1. Whisk together flour, water, beer, egg and salt until a smooth batter forms. 2. Heat canola or vegetable oil in a large straight-sided pan, using a thermometer. Bring the oil to 350 degrees over medium-high heat. 3. Working in batches, dip the slices of squash into the batter, then carefully add to the pan of oil. Flip squash, after a minute or so, and cook until the batter just begins to brown. Place cooked squash on paper towel to drain, then serve hot with dipping sauces. ■

PASTA EXTRAVAGANCES I

PHOTO: Miche Genest

n my house we take liberties with pasta sauce. Left to his own devices, my roommate will throw in juniper berries, birch syrup, preserved oranges. Cocoa powder. I tend more to soya sauce, powdered shaggy manes. Anchovy paste. Kalamata olives. It can get out of hand. Some nights we whittle the extravagances down in each of our versions; he leaves out the juniper berries, I might forgo the shaggy mane powder. Sighs of relief are breathed. Ingredients no longer war, but blend in harmony. Flavours become intelligible, though no doubt a far cry from anything authentically Italian. The cinnamon in this version comes from Greece; the cocoa powder from old Canadian recipes for game; and the lemon from I don’t know where, maybe Morocco? It adds a nice bite, and my roommate finds it an acceptable substitute when we don’t have preserved oranges. Everyone needs a pasta sauce in their repertoire, stored in yogurt containers in the freezer for those nights when inspiration is thin on the ground. Lately, we’ve been having ours when one of us comes home late from evening commitments like choir or school—we shouldn’t be eating at 9 p.m., but who’s going to know? (Well, you are, of course.)

H

ere’s a pasta sauce. Laugh at it, if you will; leave stuff out if you don’t have it, and if you’re feeling feisty— hell … throw in some juniper berries.

BEST (for now) MOOSE SAUSAGE PASTA SAUCE RECIPE INGREDIENTS

TO FINISH

• 1 lb mild or spicy Italian moose sausage (4 to 5 links)

Olive oil at the end adds depth and richness; garlic adds pungency; and vinegar, just a hint of brightness.

• 1 medium onion, chopped

• 2 Tbsp olive oil

• 3 cloves garlic, minced

• 1 tsp red wine vinegar

• 1 cup diced red pepper or carrot

• 1 clove garlic, minced

• 2 Tbsp olive oil

• Parmesan cheese

• 2 tsp dried oregano

INSTRUCTIONS

• 1 tsp cinnamon

• Sear sausages on all sides in a dry frying pan (cast iron if you have it) over medium heat. Remove to a plate and set aside.

• 1 tsp cocoa powder • 2 Tbsp tomato paste • 1 cup red wine • 1 28 oz can plum tomatoes

• Pour 2 Tbsp olive oil into the same pan and add onion. Sauté until limp and transparent, about 5 to 7 minutes. Add garlic and

sauté another 2 minutes. Stir in carrots or red pepper and sauté until the edges begin to soften, 4 to 5 minutes. • Stir in seasonings, followed by the tomato paste. Add red wine and allow to cook down for 3 to 4 minutes. • Add plum tomatoes, breaking up the chunks with a fork. • Slice seared sausages into medallions, about 1/2-inch thick, and stir into the sauce. • Stir in the olives and lemon slices. • Turn heat to medium low and simmer for 30 to 40 minutes, until thick and aromatic. • About 5 minutes before serving, stir olive oil, garlic and red wine vinegar into the pasta sauce and allow to cook until the vinegar loses its sharpness and the garlic no longer smells raw, about 4 minutes. • Serve in pasta bowls with thin shavings of Parmesan cheese and a salad and crusty bread on the side. FREELANCE

Manus Hopkins is a Toronto- and Whitehorse-based journalist, musician and lover of heavy metal and cats.

KIM HUDSON LAUNCHES HER NEW BOOK,

THE BRIDGE Accomplished author Kim Hudson debuted her newest book with a launch event in November at the Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre

K

im Hudson’s highly-varied background looked like indecision in the beginning, but she says it has turned out to be a rich resource for her interest in finding patterns. “I started out as an exploration geologist and spent some time out of Dawson prospecting and trying to figure out the source of the motherlode. Then I became a land negotiator for the Federal Government during the completion of the UFA [Umbrella Final Agreement] and the first four agreements,” she explained. “Having my first daughter led to soul searching to find a career that spoke to me. I decided on screenwriting, which turned into a love of archetypal story structure, and the publishing of my first book, The VIrgin’s Promise.” Hudson’s first book describes the structure of stories about knowing and being oneself, separate from what everyone expects, as Hudson said, which she later learned is a foundation of circular thinking. “It is the alternative to a hero’s story,” the author said. “It turned out people were hungry for this.” When Hudson cold-called her ideal publisher in the U.S., they accepted. She started giving talks and workshops, and the idea for a second book started to form in

her head. “I was uncomfortable in my skin until I tried to capture it in writing,” Hudson said. “I kept writing and decided it would be wonderful to engage with people on what was emerging, so I asked SFU Centre for Dialogue [at Simon Fraser University] if they would host a workshop on the ideas. The director said it was a big idea and offered me a Fellowship to write the book. And here we are, seven years and many workshops later, with a completed book.” With her new book, The Bridge: Connecting The Powers Of Linear And Circular Thinking, Hudson aimed to recognize that there is a pattern to the way people think. She notes that scientific research, psychological studies and common experiences come to the same conclusions. “They have all found the pattern to be complicated and complex,” she explained. “What I have noticed is that rather than having a complete understanding of the pattern, we can have a simple framework that gives us access to our two ways of knowing. Pretty quickly, I noticed that my land-claims experience was full of examples of circular and linear thinking as we worked to figure each other out. These talks were unique, as we held an image in ne-

gotiations that we were three parties sitting together on one side of the table, facing tough problems on the other side (which is what I call circular thinking). “I learned about circular thinking from the oral cultures I was working with, and about linear thinking from the Federal Government and PHOTOS: Courtesy of the Author mineral companies Author Kim Hudson I worked for. Interestingly, over the “Linear power pushes back years of writing the book I have noticed more stories against dangers, makes either/ of people reaching to incorpor- or decisions and focuses on the ate both modes of thinking into objective/external factors,” she their work and lives. I’ve captured explained. “Circular thinking pulls some of these in the book. This in what is novel, inspires passion feels like a pivotal and exciting or feels nutritive. It is inclusive by applying a ‘yes and both’ attitude, time for us.” With The Bridge, Hudson aims and embraces subjective/internal to offer two understandings of aspects. With this framework, we power, each showing a unique have a bridge to move from one perspective on the same situa- way of thinking to the other.” Hudson uses both scientific tion. Hudson believes the understanding of power that people studies and personal stories to choose, whether consciously or give value to both linear and cirunconsciously, automatically car- cular thinking. She writes with a ries with it a triad of operating personal voice, to make the concepts of her writing more relatprinciples.

The Bridge able to readers. “This is a more vulnerable place to be in and it makes it easier for people to feel they can apply The Bridge’s concepts to their lives,” she said. Growing up in the Yukon is something that has shaped Hudson as an author, thinker and creative. With a vibrant and open arts community, it’s the perfect place for her to take in inspiration of all kinds. “I love how welcoming the Yukon is to artists of all kinds,” Hudson said. “It is very inspiring to see locals in plays at the Guild, hear music at the Old Fire Hall and enjoy crafts at Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre. We share in and support people’s artistic expressions as a normal part of life here. We are so lucky, both as artists and recipients!” To learn more about Kim Hudson and The Bridge, visit kimhudsonauthor.com. ■

Skills Yukon Affiliation: 2019 Territorial Skills Competition Competitor Age: 24 Trade & Certifications: Level 3 Welding Apprentice Current workplace: YukonU / Self-Employed

to start my own business doing custom laser cutting and engraving, ASL Customs. At Skills, we identify that learning a skilled trade can bring you through various employment opportunities and creative pursuits. When you began your welding apprentice, did you know you wanted to start your own business or was it an option you deemed viable down the line? When I started my journey to become a welder, I never really thought about becoming a business owner, but as I progressed, it became more of a goal. What was starting a business like during your apprenticeship? Starting a business during my apprenticeship was challenging, yet so rewarding.

Anthony upgrading a boat’s transom (rearend) to be able to handle a larger motor Can you tell us about your experience in the trade/technology sector so far? My experience in the trade sector has been inculcated. From all the support you receive for education and instructors, to all the journeymen out there supporting and taking on apprentices, my journey so far has been nothing but outstanding. How did you start exploring the trades and/or technology career? It all started during high school in Russ Tait’s shop class where my love for welding began. He had us do little welding projects as part of his curriculum. Soon after, I was approached by Skills Canada Yukon to compete for Team Yukon at the Skills Canada National Competition in Winnipeg, for the year of 2017. Was there someone who inspired your journey into the trades and/or technology sector? Right from the start, my biggest support was Russ Tait and the members within Skills Canada Yukon who really pushed me to be a better welder and continue in the apprenticeship program. Later, more amazing mentors like Sky Pearson, Scott Novack, Adam Griffiths and Gord Rózsa all pushed me to excel and taught me so many skills that I am forever grateful for. There are so many amazing mentors within the trade sector, you will never stop learning. How has your trade and/ or technology career made your life better? Being a skilled tradesperson has benefited my life in so many ways. When you are a skilled tradesperson, you will never be out of work. I mean never; we are always in demand. I’ve always constantly had work with great pay, and it was the best choice I’ve made. Especially since all your schooling is paid for and you actually get paid to go! So, no student debt and no worry to pay the bills. With all my transferable skills I’ve been able

The support from local programs, such as Yukon University’s Summer Biz, members of the community and other local businesses who strive for supporting local entrepreneurs, definitely made it easier. What does a regular day on the job look like? A regular day for me in the welding trade would be starting with a plan. Once the plan is made, you need to figure out all the materials needed to build. Once I gather everything, I make sure the welder is good to go, then continue by taking measurements and cutting pieces to the right length. Then, when I’m all set, I can start the most exciting part—playing with fire and fusing the metal together! Once I’m done, I get to see what I curated from bare metal to a functional product. It’s a great feeling. If you met someone who was looking at exploring the trades and/or technology sector, what piece of advice would you give them? I would suggest you really look into all the available trades. You will be surprised at how many professions are actually a skilled trade! Once you narrow it down, I would suggest talking to a skilled person in that field and asking them what their lifestyle is like, their likes and dislikes of the trade, and what you can expect. What is the most-interesting thing/project you have worked on? I’ve worked on all kinds of cool stuff: building mini aluminum jet boats, working on large heavy equipment, large art projects and signs. One of my favourite projects was the Yukon Built store window guard! From designing them in 3D CAD, to cutting the parts out, to fabricating all of the window guards. Is there something about your trade that you think not many people know? I think most people believe that they have to go off to college to get a good-paying job. It’s sad to see the trades being put in the shadows so much. We need tradespeople for everything. Being able to be a certified red seal tradesman, without spending a dime for the education, is some-

Anthony working on his Level 2 welding test at Yukon University thing quite amazing and a lot of people are missing out on the opportunity. Would you recommend that people try to learn a trade (at any point in life), even if they do go off and pursue a universityoriented education? I honestly would highly recommend getting involved with a trade at whatever stage you are in life. Whatever education you’ve been through, there are so many great life skills that come along with being in the trades: you can fix your own car, build your own shed, fix and repair things yourself. The trades are everything in our daily life—from the roof over your head, to the heating pipes within your home, to the car you drive to work. Being in the trades has allowed [me] to fix things myself and to build custom projects I’ve desired. Where do you see your career in five to 10 years? What is your hope for your business in the next five years? I see myself having a small fabrication shop, building creations that I’ve been wanting to build, and bringing people’s imagination to life! Being near the end of my apprenticeship will only grow my business. In the next five years, I hope my business will be able to provide our community with quality, local, custom-made goods and be in the position to support other young entrepreneurs in seeking their business dreams. If you competed at the Territorial or National Skills Competition, tell us about your experience! I competed in the 2017 National Skills Canada Competition in Winnipeg. It was such a great experience having a fully paid trip to Winnipeg, which is so amazing since I’ve never been there before! This trip really jump-started my welding career, as right after the competition I was able to get a job with a local welding shop. That was the start of my apprenticeship to becoming a welder. Besides the competition, it was so awesome seeing all the other trades show off their skills. ■
