o many New Year’s resolutions, fad diets and trendy health makeovers revolve around restriction and deprivation. They focus on all the things you should eliminate from your life, the things in your fridge that you need to get rid of and all the treats you can’t indulge in anymore. Sometimes it feels good to go the extreme route for a while but it’s often hard to stick to for any extended period of time. I’ve found that instead of creating a huge list of “bad” foods that I can’t have anymore, it’s much more realistic to strive to live a healthier life by adding more “good” foods to my diet. If I’m lucky, these more-nutritious items gradually begin to push aside and replace the not-sohealthy snacks and meals without much extra effort on my part. To me, that makes a lot more sense, especially this time of year when our bodies crave comfort and nutrient-dense foods after being outside in the cold and when denying ourselves the occasional treat feels especially hard. Even small changes can add up to significant improvements in our well-being, and adding a few new health-giving foods to your diet, this year, can make a big difference in the long run. There are endless options to choose from— whether you pick something as simple and quick as eating one

Events or two Brazil nuts a day, to boost your selenium intake, or decide to do something much more time consuming like adding more wild and locally harvested meat to your meals. The Andes of Peru are home to many traditional ancestral foods that in recent years have become recognized as superfoods. Among them are two that one can now encounter in health-food stores and supermarkets around the world: quinoa and kiwicha. Perhaps after learning a bit more about each one, you will feel inspired to introduce them into your diet this year.

QUINOA Although quinoa has only become popular in the mainstream

recently (so much so that between 2006 and 2013, the crop prices tripled), it’s been consumed for thousands of years by the inhabitants of what is nowadays Peru and Bolivia. Said to have originated in the area around Lake Titicaca, it’s now cultivated in countries all around the globe. Naturally gluten free, quinoa is a versatile, delicious and incredibly nutritious addition to anyone’s diet. This ancient seed is high in magnesium, manganese, iron, copper, phosphorus, B vitamins and other essential minerals, as well as an amino acid called lysine. Quinoa is considered by many to be a complete protein because it contains all nine essential amino acids that our bodies can’t make on their own and, to this

day, is still a valuable source of protein in many rural Andean communities where not much meat is eaten on a daily basis. In its original state, quinoa has an outer coating of bittertasting saponins that act as a natural pesticide and that need to be washed off. Quinoa that is sold in stores is often “pre-washed” but an extra rinse before cooking it is always a good idea. While white quinoa is the most commonlyavailable type, there are more than 120 different varieties, including some that are red and others that are black. Any of these can be added to salads and soups, made into a stir fry or cooked as a porridge or rice substitute. You can easily make a big batch ahead of time and freeze

smaller portions or keep some in the fridge to toss into a smoothie or add to your morning yogurt.

KIWICHA With support from:

Kiwicha, also known as amaranth or love-lies-bleeding, was a staple food of the Inca, Maya and Aztec civilizations. Like quinoa, kiwicha is an annual, produces edible leaves and seeds, is gluten free, can grow at high elevations, is fairly tolerant to drought (once established) and is a nutritional powerhouse. It’s an excellent source of fibre, vitamins and minerals, as well as protein. While possibly a bit harder to find than quinoa, kiwicha’s vast health

Close-up of the natural beauty that is kiwicha benefits make it worth the extra effort. It’s said to lower cholesterol, reduce inflammation, support bone health, fight diabetes and help with weight loss. Kiwicha can be ground into flour, added to soups, made into porridge, as well as roasted and popped over heat like corn and then added to granola. Its nutty, earthy flavour is a nice addition or substitute in bread and cake recipes, whether as flour or in its original seed form. There’s actually one more Peruvian superfood that shares many similar characteristics with the two above-mentioned seeds but isn’t yet readily available outside of Peru and Bolivia. It’s called cañihua and maybe someday it will gain the same international recognition and acclaim as qui-

For anyone who would like a more-local alternative to these nutritious foods indigenous to South America, make a mental note to keep an eye out for the tender green leaves of lamb’s quarters this spring and summer. A close cousin to quinoa, lamb’s quarters was one of the earliest plants introduced to the Yukon (according to The Boreal Herbal by Beverley Gray) and can be found in disturbed soils, compost piles and roadsides. You probably already have it growing in your garden but may have been under the impression that it was a weed. Not only can you eat the leaves (much like spinach), as well as its seeds, which have a high concentration of essential amino acids, but lamb’s quarters also has a lot of potential as medicine. Read more about it online or in your favourite herbal plant guide. Whether you decide to add one of these nutrient-rich foods to your diet this year or something else, I hope you will notice a difference in your well-being in the coming months and will feel inspired to make this small addition a permanent part of your future. n

The leaves of quinoa and lamb’s quarters look remarkably alike when young

Cozy Quinoa Apple Beverage (Make as much or as little as you like!)

INGREDIENTS • Pre-cooked quinoa • Apple, cut into small cubes (you can also add pineapple if you like) • Whole cloves • Cinnamon stick (or powdered cinnamon) • Water (can be replaced with your favourite plantbased milk or regular milk) • Finely-ground white corn flour (can be replaced with arrowroot flour or cornstarch, or can be omitted) • Sugar (can be replaced with honey or maple syrup)

INSTRUCTIONS 1. Add quinoa, apple, cloves, cinnamon and water to a pot and bring to a simmer. 2. Cook until apple pieces are soft and mushy. 3. If you want a thicker/ creamier drink, add a tablespoon of fine corn flour, arrowroot flour or cornstarch to a little bit of cold water, whisk together and then stir into previous ingredients. 4. Let simmer for a few more minutes. 5. Sweeten, as desired, with sugar, honey or maple syrup. 6. Enjoy a cup with your family at breakfast, or bring it along in a thermos on a cross-country ski outing.

Garlic-Roasted Cauliflower

ow-effort vegetables are essential at this time of year. When all you want is rich, comforting food

that’s easy to eat while wearing a onesie on the couch, make sure to have a couple of recipes for satisfying, hearty vegetables in your back pocket. Add this cauliflower to a hearty salad, mix with pasta or use it as an addition to a kinda-healthy grilledcheese sandwich.

INGREDIENTS: ❑ 1 small head of cauliflower, cut into small chunks

Dill

❑ 1 head of garlic, cleaned and cut into individual cloves

❑ 3 Tbsp olive oil ❑ Salt and pepper, to taste ❑ 1/8 tsp dried thyme

METHOD: 1. Toss cauliflower and garlic together, then drizzle with olive oil and season, to taste, with salt and pepper. 2. Place on a sheet pan and roast at 400 F until cauliflower is brown and garlic is soft, about 15 minutes.

3. When cauliflower is done, serve as is for a simple vegetable side, or toss with pasta and heavy cream and cheese for an easy dinner, or stuff into a sandwich with some pesto for an easy lunch. n

Make it into a grilled-cheese sandwich (on sourdough, using raclette cheese from Cultured Fine Cheese)

A TRIP TO OVAMBOLAND

Elisia’s brothers cutting meat

Elke Reinauer sends a dispatch from Namibia

Y

ou will never forget the smell of rain in Namibia,” a friend told me when I disembarked for Namibia for the first time. That was eight years ago. Since then I have been visiting the country in Southwest Africa, every year, to look after my social project, Creabuntu. I would usually stay at my friend’s place in Windhoek, the capital of Namibia. The project is located in the township of Windhoek, where I spend most of my time, in Namibia. I didn’t travel much—just a weekend out of town, here and there. But this time was different; my partner Martin came with me. After we had spent some time in Windhoek, to look after my project, we went on a trip. For two weeks we travelled with a rental car with a rooftop tent. We did some touristy things such as visiting Etosha National Park to watch elephants, giraffes and zebras. But one of the highlights was visiting my friend Elisia in the north of Namibia, in Ovamboland, also known as the “Four-O” region, named after the districts Oshana, Oshikoto, Ohangwena and Omusati. Almost all the towns in the north start with “O” (except the town close to my friend’s place—Eenhana). I first met my friend Elisia when I was looking for artist teachers for my social project. Creabuntu’s aim is to teach art to kids: drama, drawing, crafts and sculpture. Elisia is an artist who does sculpturing and traditional Namibian

pottery. She was teaching for Creabuntu until she moved back to the north. Elisia was always talking about her dream—having her own art studio, which would also be an art school for her community. She bought land and started the construction. Then she had a setback when things from the construction site were stolen. It took her three years to complete her studio. Driving the north of Namibia, I got excited. We were out of my comfort zone, which is Windhoek and a radius of 200 kilometres around it. Windhoek is very western; almost European. With a German community of 20,000 people living there (Namibia was once a German colony), one can almost feel at home. But, up north, there aren’t any Europeans. It’s a beautiful countryside that reminds me of a huge park or a garden with beautiful trees, with names such as mopane or marula, that grow in sandy ground. Silvery-green palm trees, with makalani nuts, stand

between the villages. On the side of the highway, we saw goats and cows eating grass. Elisa and her family were already waiting for us as we drove through the gate of her studio, which has a separate building for a kitchen and a sleeping area and bathroom in the back of the house where Elisia’s sister was staying. Elisia was staying with her aunt, who had raised her. In Ovambo culture, unmarried women are supposed to stay with the people who raised them (not always their parents), until they get married. It was a warm welcome and they had slaughtered a chicken for us that day. We ate the chicken, sauce and pap (cornmeal) with our hands. We slept in the tent on top of the car, which was handy and comfortable. I always wanted to see where Elisia came from (Ovamboland). The Ovambos are the largest tribe in Namibia. They live in the north, but lots of young people are moving to Windhoek in hope of finding

Elisia’s mother wearing her traditional dress

work there. They usually end up on the outskirts of the township, staying in shacks without electricity. They have a tiny space (in the north, they have lots of space). So I wanted to find out what makes them want to move from there.

Deep in the bush

(visiting an African kraal) Life in the north is based on farming. I experienced this when Elisia brought us to the kraal where her parents live with some of their children and grandkids. We had to drive through deep white sand to get there. Thanks to our four-by-four rental, this was possible. A fence of wooden sticks surrounded the kraal. Inside were huts built in a round shape, with roofs made of straw. Chickens were running around and on the other side were fields where mahango (millet) was planted. The family owns cows and chickens. Our car was stocked with food, which we wanted to braai

(the Afrikaans word for “barbecue”). We were greeted by Elisia’s parents, who don’t speak any English (Elisias translated). As welcome gifts, we brought cool drinks for everyone. Things like that, they don’t get in the village. There are seven adults in the kraal (everyone has their own hut). Five of Elisia’s siblings were staying there with their kids. Elisia’s mother showed us baskets that she had made out of dry palm leaves. Some of the others were starting a fire. Everybody did something: one girl took the rice and boiled it, while Elisia’s brothers were cutting meat, without a cutting board, just holding it in their hands. Elisia’s dad sat on a chair in the sand and enjoyed his grandkids and everything that was going on. There is no electricity or running water there and they are using well water and are living off of their land. I have never seen such happy people … smiling, singing, talking to us in Oshivambo! We didn’t understand the language, but who cares! This was the most-impressive afternoon of our trip, I think, when we were back at Elisia’s art studio and set up our tent for the night. I still don’t get it … why young people would leave a place like Ovamboland. There is so much space—space they wouldn’t find in the township. At night, it starts to rain. I just love the scent of rain in Namibia: it smells kind of earthy and flowery at the same time. My friend was right—it is something I will never forget. And I won’t forget the people in Ovamboland. n

Kylie Campbell-Clarke

AUSSIE GIRL IN THE YUKON

Kylie Campbell-Clarke is an Australian-Canadian writer and photographer exploring the Yukon.

THE FIRSTS OF THREE MONTHS (When everything is new!)

N

ewborns are basically like puppies: everything is so new. Literally, once they come out of the belly they are using everything for the first time. They’ve never had to eat through their mouths or poop out their bottoms. So everything hurts; everything is new.

The first three months, newborns are the most-useless creatures on the planet. It’s actually quite shocking that human beings are the dominant species on Earth, because we are utterly useless for so long. But there is a reason—our brains! Could you imagine having

your adult brain in an infant’s body … they would go insane. Or, vice versa, they could walk before the brain was developed (catastrophe). So basically, because we have these big big brains, we need time to develop more than other animals. So when my baby Maverick learned to poop without scream-

ing, or when he smiled his first time or actually focused on me when I said his name—I swooned! (just like a puppy). The first of many things happen in the first three months, but they aren’t that exciting: you’re baby won’t be crawling or walking … They are literally potatoes.

But every single day they can do something new. It may be subtle, it may be groundbreaking (for a newborn), but soon you find yourself being overly excited because your baby can smile at you. It’s the little things, I guess. So here’s to many more (interesting) firsts … n PHOTOS: Kylie Campbell-Clarke

PROFILES: Interview with Jonathan Fillmore

Skills Canada Yukon

Skills Canada Yukon promotes trades and technology careers as a top choice for Yukoners. If you are interested in learning more about the trades and technology sectors, or want to connect with our community, please call 867-332-7446 or send an email to yukoncommunications@skillscanada.com You can also find us on Facebook and on Instagram @skillscanadayukon.

Jonathan Fillmore 2023 Skills Canada National Competition Bronze Medal Age: 30 Trade & Certifications:

Red Seal Carpenter Current workplace: Yukon University

Would you tell us about your experience in the trade/ technology sector, so far? It is hard to sum up briefly, but overall it has been an exciting and very rewarding journey. Throughout my early twenties, I worked in various carpentry settings which allowed me to make an income while exploring my interests and travelling. When I was ready to take my career as a carpenter seriously, I signed up for my apprenticeship and focused on developing my skills to get my Red Seal. Getting my Red Seal has opened up so many doors that I never would have expected—from working as a project coordinator in the commercial industry, to now teaching carpentry here in the Yukon. Opportunity is endless!

How did you start exploring your trades and/or technology career? I am actually a third-generation carpenter, so it has always come kind of second nature.

Was there a certain project or aspect of carpentry that you worked on with your family that fuelled the interest even more? I think it was more of how someone in my family was always renovating or upgrading something in their own homes. It really made carpentry stand out as a necessary skill set for me.

Jon after being awarded his bronze medal at the 2023 Skills Canada National Competition in Post-Secondary Carpentry p

Was there someone who inspired your journey into the trades and/or technology sector?

engineering was not the best fit for me after all, despite completing three-quarters [of the] terms required. However, no education is ever wasted and many of the skills I developed on that path have played a big role in enabling me to advance my career off of the job site and into the office, and eventually to where I am now—actually teaching at Yukon University!

What does a regular day on the job look like? My regular day is currently filled with teaching apprentices the theory and skills required to successfully progress through their apprenticeship. It’s so exciting to be able to make a positive impact on others’ journeys!

Dive in! There is so much support in the trades (both financially and socially), and so many specialty areas to pursue a career!

How has your trade and/ or technology career made your life better?

What is the most-interesting thing/project you have worked on?

Working in the trades has enabled me to build a sense of community amongst friends and coworkers, by being able to teach and share my skill set (and toolbox).

It’s really hard to pick just one. I really liked working with commercial glulam installations, working with big timber, big saws and cranes, every day, to create unique structures, was a really cool experience.

It really was a winding road that landed me here. I wanted to pursue carpentry out of high school, but ended up going to college for civil engineering technology instead. As it turns out,

If you told me five years ago that I would be living in the Yukon, let alone actually teaching other carpenters, I would not have believed you. I can’t imagine what life might bring in the next five to 10 years, but I hope I can continue to teach, spend time with my family and hopefully grow a small contracting business here in Whitehorse.

Jon with one of his favourite helpers, his oldest daughter q

If you met someone who was looking at exploring the trades and/or technology sector, what piece of advice would you give them?

My family (and many of the dedicated small business owners I have had the pleasure of working for over the years) really inspired me to pursue my carpentry career.

At what point in your life did you consider becoming a carpenter? Were there any other career options you were planning on pursuing? If so, do you think you can tie them in with your career now or in the future?

Where do you see your career in five to 10 years? What do you hope for your business in the next five years?

Is there something about your trade that you think not many people know? I think there are a lot of people who still don’t realize that getting into a trade can lead to as many well-paying career opportunities as a degree or diploma, and the idea that you would always be outside working in the cold is an outdated mindset. With a trade ticket, you can create your own future.

PHOTOS: Courtesy of Jonathan Fillmore

If you competed at the Territorial or National Skills Competition, tell us about your experience! I competed in the 2023 Territorial Skills competition for carpentry and had a great time! I managed to get a gold medal here in the Yukon and competed at the national competition in Winnipeg, where I brought home a bronze. The Skills program provides so much insight into the trades world, and the competition is next level. I had no idea just how intense the national competition would be, but I poured sweat for 12 hours and loved every second of it! n

ENGINE OIL Your Vehicle’s Operational Lifeline

AA UglyDuckling Group (C/M, NS) 8:00 PM Christ Church Cathedral New members always welcome, this is a non smoking group.

Batteries Engine oil provides proper lubrication for all the moving parts inside an internal combustion engine - to disperse heat and prolong the life of all components.

Ugly Ducklings Group (O,A) 8:00 PM Christ Church Cathedral Held in person or by zoom – ID 251-363-5766, call 778-907-2701 for more info.

Without engine oil, serious damage can occur in a very short amount of time. Modern engine oils prevent blockages and contaminants from restricting oil flow. Oil breaks down and loses its properties over time, you should always check your oil on a regular basis. We recommend every 10,000km to 20,000km. Some circumstances, may require more frequent changes. For example if the vehicle is operated under abnormal conditions like 4wding, towing, racing, or excessive stop-start driving.

TOPS (Take off Pounds Sensibly) 8:00 PM 100 25 Firth Rd Want to improve or maintain a healthy weight? Join us! Every Wednesday morning. It is also important to use the correct grade and specification of oil in your engine. Many modern European and diesel engines require certain additives which are present only in specific oil grades, and using the wrong specification can cause major and expensive engine and component damage.

TALES OF NAHGANNE

Red Grossinger Red Grossinger is a sasquatch enthusiast, investigator and a published author living in the Yukon.

People have told me that they have often been “chased away” from a certain area while in the bush, either while berry picking or while looking for a good fishing spot or checking for animals … generally from areas close to a waterway of some sort

hat they describe is experiencing an event involving trees that were being thrashed about in a strange manner, as if pushed or shaken against each other with force. Sometimes there would be a sort of grunting noise or similar vocalizations, and occasionally there would be some sort of scent, as well—usually not a strong, pungent smell but one somewhat similar to that of a skunk or rotten eggs. Here are a few examples … A First Nation couple (residing in Faro) told me about an occurrence they had experienced in 2010. That spring they walked to Swim Lake, a few kilometres east of Faro, hoping to catch a few whitefish. They drove their pickup truck to the bottom of a

steep hill. After climbing the hill, they came to a small creek with water running across the trail and, as they crossed it, they were subjected to tree-thrashing activity and yelling that came from a short distance on their left—yet they could not see anything. They tried to identify the source, went through a list of possible animals, without success. Nothing fit, and the tree thrashing got worse and was seemingly getting closer to the trail … louder; but still, they could not see anything. They did not hear any vocals, grunts or yells, and there was no wind at all. Actually, they did not hear any birds chirping. It was a dead calm, except for the noise of trees being thrashed about. Strangely, an odd feeling came over them as they told me: knots in their stomachs, light-headed, a sense of dizziness and a sickening feeling. They simply could not understand what was going on, but they knew something was wrong so they decided to turn around and went back to their truck and drove to town. After interviewing the couple, I drove to the site and investigated the area, looking for activity signs. I did not see anything on my first trip, but when I returned to the location two days later, I experienced something very similar to what the couple had … as if something was guarding the area and was chasing people away. Another strange “tree” event … In July of 2011, I was travelling along Livingstone Trail , investigating a similar occurrence that had been reported to me by a Kwanlin Dün gentleman. He was on his way to the Ta’an Kwӓch’ӓn village on the northeast shore of Lake Laberge, in September of 2010, driving along the Livingstone Trail when he experienced a tree-thrashing event, with odd grunting and threatening

The Livingstone Trail starts off as the Long Lake Trail (before the name changes) and it leads past Lake Laberge to the old gold-mining camp by Livingstone Creek movements by something walking on two legs, but which he could not clearly see in the general area of Steamboat Slough. All that scary stuff caused him to change his planned visit and to return home. I was riding on my Ruckus motorcycle that morning and had stopped by an overflowing creek, shortly before noon, a couple of kilometres from Steamboat Slough. The small bridge that used to cross it had been washed away. Wandering about, I found a location where I could wade across the creek and basically pull the bike; but then, as I was getting ready, I heard movement on my left, toward Lake Laberge and on the other side of the creek. Large spruce trees were being shaken, being banged against each other with force, but there was no

vocals or grunting of any kind. There was no wind at the time; it was very calm and the only other sound was that of running water. I tried to figure out what animal could make such a racket: a moose, but usually there would be grunting and it was only July, too early for rut. Not a bear, for sure, or an elk … so then, what? And then a strange, yet familiar feeling came over me … I gradually acquired a sense of uneasiness, dizziness, a tightening of my chest and just an overall sickening feeling of apprehension, as if something bad would soon be happening. All of this reminded me of a similar experience at Squanga Lake in September of 2008 when I was investigating an occurrence there. Needless to say, I soon left the area. n

COMMUNITY Old-Timers’ Luncheon Series Each year, the Association of Mineral Explorers (AME) hosts a luncheon at the annual Roundup conference for industry ‘old-timers’; those individuals at least 70 years of age who have made a significant contribution to the mineral exploration community. In 2022, Victoria Gold President & CEO John McConnell approached AME with the idea of hosting a series of old-timer’s luncheons throughout the year (instead of only once a year) to continually connect and stay involved in the industry. Since then, in addition to the traditional January Roundup gathering, Victoria Gold is honoured to sponsor seasonal old-timers’ luncheons in the spring, summer and fall as well.

Spring 2023’s AME Old Timers’ Luncheon; held at the AME offices in downtown Vancouver featured speaker Brandon Macdonald of Fireweed Metals pictured here with AME’s Kendra Johnston and Victoria Gold President & CEO John McConnell.

“These get-togethers are such a wonderful opportunity for those who helped build our industry to connect and reflect,” says McConnell. “We are so pleased to support these luncheons to take place four times a year now and truly enjoy being privy to the shared stories, wisdom and history of those who came before us.” “By recognizing our past and the people who helped shape our industry, we can be better prepared for our future,” adds McConnell. “The ingenuity demonstrated by these individuals during their careers is inspiring and we look forward to upcoming gatherings over a shared meal and a shared love of our industry.” The next AME Old Timers’ Luncheon will take place at Roundup on Wednesday, January 24 in Vancouver and participation is by invitation through AME. The company employs over 500 workers and contractors; half of which are Yukoners At Work and many are FNNND citizens.
