A DECADE OF JENNI HOUSE

The Jenni House Artist Residency is known in the Yukon for providing studio space to artists from the territories, northern BC and Alaska, as well as circumpolar countries.

With monthly residencies for a variety of different creatives including visual artists, filmmakers, musicians, literary artists, multimedia creators and more, Jenni House resident artists are able to

dedicate themselves to their craft full-time and create what they desire with inspiration from their historical surroundings.

“I was lucky enough to do a residency at Jenni House during the summer of 2021,” said Jenni House Outreach Coordinator Janet Patterson, who was offered her position after completing her residency, “As a residency artist, it was a real gift to be able to devote a full month solely to my art. And while the project I initially planned to work on had no direct connection with the Shipyards area itself, I became fascinated by the stories that people told me when they dropped by Jenni House to see what I was working on.”

Patterson said the passion of the people she spoke with during her artist residency for the area overshadowed her intent for her

original project and she wound up curating an exhibit in the Yukon Art Centre’s community gallery the following spring. From Outhouses to Condos featured photos taken of the Shipyards community when it was flourishing and as it was being demolished to make way for the Shipyards Park and other developments.

“At the same time, I also organized a storytelling circle involving several people who had lived there, and Andrew Connors rescreened a film he had made 20 years earlier about the dying days of the Shipyards community,” Patterson said. “None of this would have happened had I not been given a Jenni House artist residency. So you can see how dear it is to my heart.”

year round artist residency in the Yukon. According to Patterson, studio space is scarce in Whitehorse, and affordable spaces are even harder to find.

“To date, the Jenni House residency has offered work space to about 175 artists,” she said. “But of course the effects of this program go beyond the artists to the general public, which has a chance to attend open houses, participate in workshops, and otherwise engage with the artists. The ripples extend far and wide.”

The Jenni House Artist Residency is hosted by an arts collective including ArtsNet Society, Yukon Film Society, Yukon Arts Centre, Music Yukon and Jazz Yukon with support from other arts and cultural organizations, sponsors and donors, as well as the Yukon Arts Fund and the City of Whitehorse.

In April, the Jenni House celebrated 10 years of operations with an open house that involved the unveiling of some interpretive panels and brochures funded by Yukon 125 and the Yukon Heritage Resources Fund. The event also celebrated the Jenni House’s support of over 175 participating artists who engaged in month-long residencies and delivered an array of more than 185 workshops, open houses and other community engagement events attended by 6,000 Yukoners.

“I’m delighted, of course!” said Patterson, speaking about how it feels to reach this milestone.

“This residency is possible because five non-profits came together to make this happen ArtsNet, Yukon Arts Centre, Music Yukon, Jazz Yukon, Yukon Film Society. In that way, Jenni House is unique. Running programs like this always has its financial challenges, so I hope we can continue to run

tion of using the Chambers House in winter, but it is a smaller, shared space that doesn’t work for all disciplines.”

the Jenni House residency program for many years to come.”

As of now, the Jenni House building can only be used in the warmer months because of issues with freezing water pipes, Patterson explained. In the winters, they have been moving next door to the Chambers House, which the Frostbite Society generously lets them use.

“We are working with the city to see if money can be found to upgrade the water pipes in hopes that we could use Jenni House on a year round basis,” Patterson said. “That would be a game changer for us! It’s great to have the op-

For Patterson, her favourite part of working with the Jenni House is getting to know the artists and their work.

“The talent in this territory is remarkable!” she said. “In terms of highlights, there are many artists who have gone on to make an impact on the national and international stage. Krystle Silverfox comes to mind right away for instance. She was shortlisted for the 2022 Sobey Art Award and has shown at the National Gallery of Canada among other prestigious galleries.”

All kinds of artists are encouraged to apply for the Jenni House Artist Residency. Selected artists are awarded a one-month resi-

dency and a $1,000 CAD honorarium and $100 material allowance for public engagement such as supplies for workshops or refreshments for receptions. Artists from rural communities outside Whitehorse and outside the Yukon can also apply for travel, accommodation and living allowances. The Jenni House Artist Residency has two application deadlines annually, on February 14 and August 14.

“It might seem like a simple thing to provide free studio space to an artist for a month, along with a $1,000 stipend, but I think the power of that support can be quite extraordinary,” said Patterson.

CLOSING THE BOOK ON A PIECE OF YUKON HISTORY

Uta Reilly’s family has entered its last

Klondike Nugget and Ivory

Shop in Dawson City

Klondike Nugget and Ivory has served Dawson City, the Yukon and beyond long enough to be considered nothing short of historic. In a location that has housed a jewelry store continuously since 1904, Uta Reilly is the fifth owner of the business, being hired in 1978 and taking the helm as owner in 1987.

“Over the years, we’ve had people stopping in and getting gifts and jewelry that have been quite unique; you couldn’t find these things in all the other gift shops,” said Reilly. “We always had things we made ourselves.”

The shop’s long history has also seen many gold miners bringing in their findings to have them made into special one-of-a-kind jewelry pieces, something Reilly said is a special memory.

When Reilly first got hired at the shop, her main duties were cleaning up after the Dawson City flood in 1979, but due to her family’s history of running a retail business selling sewing machines and bicycles in Germany, she felt right home working in a shop, and it was just over a decade before she bought the business herself.

“I started working and never looked back,” she said.

Last year, when Reilly made the decision to retire from the business, Dawson City hosted a weekend of celebrations for her, with the town even declaring “Uta Reilly Day” during an open house at the shop. The mayor presented

Reilly with some gifts, and she was delighted to see a banner put up for the celebration.

“That was a big surprise,” she said of the festivities, adding with a laugh: “It was a little overwhelming.”

When asked what she would say to the community that has supported her business over the years, Reilly expresses nothing but gratitude, also mentioning that she’s lucky to have had such great staff, employing many students during their summers in Dawson City.

Reilly’s daughter, Sandra Kehoe, who has helped run the business alongside her husband Greg and two children, offered a special thank you to their past mentors in the business, Ag and George Shaw and Amy and Earl Bennett.

“Both previous sets of owners worked together in the business when Mom first started,” she said. “They became more like extended family than employers, and coworkers. This style of business and work place remained. We would like to shout out and thank all of the employees and coworkers we have had since. Without you we wouldn’t have been the store and workplace we knew

and loved. It is easy to go to work everyday when you have good relationships and laughter. We thank you and the greater community for your love, laughter and support.”

As of now, Klondike Nugget and Ivory will be open through the summer season until the end of September. Reilly’s family is still hopeful that a buyer will emerge to take over the business. The shop is located on the corner of Front and Queen St. in Dawson City. To learn more, visit the Klondike Nugget and Ivory Shop’s website at knis.ca/index.html n

You can expect friendly and welcoming care in an environment that relaxes even the most anxious patients. We all love what we do, and look forward to welcoming you and your family to our practice.

RETIREMENT MOMENTS THIS SUMMER?

It’s been nine years since I retired from paid work

Idid an informal survey of my friends and relatives who have also retired. I asked people what suggestions they had for preparing for retirement and now that they are retired, how are they feeling about it?

Preparing for retirement

• Do your research–if available take retirement planning sessions through your workplace, talk with people who have retired, get information from your bank or financial advisor about the financial impact of various options, for example if you retire early or if you were to reduce your working hours before retirement

• Try it out - consider reducing your work hours prior to retirement or if your employer allows, bank your days or take a leave for a few months to test out what it is like.

• Develop your hobbies/interests, social contacts, volunteer and recreational activities before retiring so you have a focus for your time after retirement. Include activities for physical, emotional, spiritual and mental health.

• Develop a realistic budget for your time, money and energy.

• Plan ahead for next phases when things are sure to change (your health or family member’s health). Ensure your will, Enduring Power of Attorney and Advance Directive are legal and current.

PHOTO: Lillian Nakamura-Maguire
Creative results from a summer retreat with retired friends and family. Everyone taught an artistic pursuit they enjoyed (felting, jewelry making and bookbinding)

One individual said, “If you are able financially [to retire], do not wait. Do it when you still have your health and facilities. Life is too short.”

Transitioning into retirement

After I had announced that I was retiring, I had some moments

wondering if I had made the right decision. I was 67 when I retired. Would I have enough money to live on? Would I still have fulfilling activities to replace my work activities? I also felt like I had lost my position already and people were making plans to replace me! It was hard to accept that retirement was happening. Perhaps that was the hardest part–acceptance that I

was letting go of my “role” for which I had worked hard and established a career from. Would there be something to replace it in the future?

I find there has been much to fill my time. Be patient and kind to yourself. Give yourself time to make the transition and for your friends and family to transition with you.

One person advised, “Unplug slowly. Being able to do some projects for the former employer after you retire is a great benefit. Just don’t plan on doing it too long–it may inhibit others from stepping up and the context changes, making some advice obsolete.”

Something I’ve noticed after retirement and being an older person is that business and government workers may have a tendency to ignore your opinions or be condescending or not even be aware of your presence. My son says it’s because I’m short and service counters are often quite high. It may be true... and maybe I’m being overly sensitive, but older friends have noticed this as well.

That aside, everyone I heard from loves being retired, as do I!

Making your time and talents count

• If you’re able, volunteer your time and remember that your experience and skills are valuable and our community needs them. Pay it forward.

• Keep your mind active by including people of all ages and different cultural perspectives to gain

new insights and knowledge. Take in inter-generational, multicultural and Indigenous event

• Keep a journal to reflect on what you are learning, dreaming and doing. As memory becomes less reliable, it’s a good way to keep track of your happy/sad times.

• Learn something new (like pickleball or meditation or sign up for the Indigenous book club at the library). Go for walks, canoe or partake of recreational and social activities during less peak times.

• Take advantage of restaurants that offer senior discount lunches and get together with your friends.

Words of wisdom from elders and retiree

One person said: “Aging takes courage as the inevitable life losses emerge [like] illness or injury; loss of cherished friends, family, pets; declining physical abilities; perhaps changing financial circumstances; forced moves of home, maybe even leaving the Yukon for various reasons [and] facing end of life with truth and bravery as much as possible.”

Another retiree said, “Retirement is a chance to connect more with the Earth and to soak up the beauty of the universe. It’s a spiritual time.”

In today’s economic situation, I recognize that it is a privilege to be retired and to have pension funds to cover my living costs. How can we create a society in which it is possible for all to experience restorative times at points in our lives?

Perhaps we’re all overdue for a rethink of retirement, so that we all can enjoy aspects of it throughout our whole lives.

I hope you find time for “retirement” moments this summer. n

A WALK ALONG THE RIVER

Exploring First Nations History, Indigenous Culture and Yukon Plant Medicine with Amber BerardAlthouse

It’s a warm Yukon summer afternoon and thirty or more people are gathered outside of the Visitor Information Centre in Whitehorse.

Some are tourists here on vacation and others are locals, like

myself, taking a break from their regular Thursday. I’m here to go on a walk with Amber BerardAlthouse, a proud Tlingit woman and member of Kluane First Nation. I don’t really know what to expect but I’m curious and hoping to maybe learn something new on this gorgeous sun-shiny day.

Amber is leading free interpretive walking tours along the waterfront this summer with a focus on Yukon history through a First Nations lens, along with a bit of plant medicine mixed in.

Although she was born in Edmonton and didn’t move to the Yukon until she was 13, it’s obvious from the way she speaks that

this is where her roots are, where home is and where she feels most herself. Amber’s mom grew up in the Yukon and that’s where she gets her indigenous heritage from, as well as her love of plants.

Friendly, warm and happy to answer questions, it’s clear that she’s very good at her job. Amber said she wasn’t ever the best student and didn’t go to university but she always had big dreams and knew that she wanted to develop some skills. After graduating high school she worked as a waitress and did a lot of traveling. It was on those trips that she became aware of the similarities between indigenous cultures around the

world and her interest in health and wellness began to grow.

In 2009 Amber started to do yoga and immediately fell in love with it. Yoga connected her to her body, to the earth and to a universal source. At the same time, she started learning more about medicinal plants and natural healing modalities. In 2014, as she was doing her yoga teacher training in Vietnam, she got a call back for a job at Parks Canada. She immediately returned to the Yukon and spent the subsequent ten years working for Parks Canada with Kluane National Park and Reserve as a heritage presenter.

Despite being very aware that she wasn’t talking to people on behalf of herself but instead speaking to them on behalf of the government, working for Parks Canada was overall a very good experience where she learned a lot. Her first mentor was Pauly Sias, an interpreter at Kluane when Amber first started, and

it was through relationships like that as well as Parks Canada material, books, other coworkers and conversations with her elders and people in her community that she began to put together her interpretative walks and talks on Yukon indigenous culture and history. Her work was basically storytelling with structure and it seemed to come to her quite naturally.

“I’m an educator, I’m a comfortable public speaker and this all came from my interpretive experience with Parks Canada. I was a shy kid and that’s all changed” Amber said, reflecting back on her time in Kluane. “I highly recommend working for Parks Canada, especially if you’re First Nations because we need more indigenous

representation in Parks Canada. Who knows where that career is going to take you.”

During the last few years though, it became more and more clear to Amber that she needed to follow her internal nudges to go after her dreams and try something new. Letting go of a good job with a steady income wasn’t easy but she faced her fears and on April 1 of this year, marked the beginning of a new chapter in her life: self-employment. She knew she wanted to uplift people, promote wellness and preserve indigenous knowledge. Working with a business coach, she decided to combine all the things she loved into one business.

Working for herself has been a journey towards self discipline. “I took a leap starting my own business and there’s no way I could have known how busy I would be,” she said. Having big dreams is one thing but doing the work every day to bring them into reality is a whole other ball game.”

Along with doing her walks and talks (including a few at this year’s Adäka Cultural Festival) and a stint at the university facilitating First Nations 101, she’s also working on some medicinal plant workshops,

finishing work on her website and putting the final touches on an online coaching program that’s been in the works for the better part of the past two years. The eightweek-long online program will be all about healing and will include yoga, plant medicine, journaling, dancing, whole food recipes and much more. She’s hoping to launch it by the end of August and will, for the time being, only be offering it to indigenous women to further their healing journey.

“There’s still a lot of suffering and intergenerational trauma in our communities. I want to lift people up, I want people to see their value, I want people to feel empowered, I want people to be making money, not relying on the government or anybody else to help them. We heal ourselves. We are responsible for our own healing.”

The northern landscape and its medicinal plants are a large part of that healing journey for Amber.

“The Yukon has helped me connect to my indigenous roots, to my family, to First Nations’ issues and culture and plant medicine. Colonization happened in the Yukon much later than in the rest of Canada. When the Gold Rush

happened, people were still living nomadically here. My grandparents were still living nomadically. I think people are really surprised to learn that… If I would have stayed in Edmonton I wouldn’t be this person, I wouldn’t be a proud indigenous woman.”

One of her favourite things to talk about on her walks is the power of plants. “I want people to start realizing that not all medicine comes from a bottle and a doctor. Medicine is actually all around us and there is a lot that we can intuitively do to help ourselves heal.”

As Amber shares stories about the remnants of history that line the banks of the Yukon River, her pace mirrors the leisurely current of the water flowing past us. She makes a handful of stops as we walk slowly from Rotary Park all the way down to the Fireweed Market at Shipyards. Amber talks about some of the plants we pass by: willow and dandelion.

Her love for the Yukon and its indigenous culture shines through as she seamlessly weaves together historical information and traditional knowledge. The smell of cottonwood, wild roses and hot asphalt fills the air as people cycle

past on their bikes while others enjoy the sunny weather from the comfort of a bench or a soft patch of grass. I forgot how beautiful the waterfront is this time of year and this has been the perfect reminder.

Amber will continue offering her weekly walks from the Visitor Information Centre until the end of August at which point she’ll shift her focus to her online coaching and to creating more walks for next year. “I can’t wait to see what the future holds… I really want to mentor Kwanlin Dün and Ta’an Kwäch’än Council people, especially youth, to become interpreters and to take over some of my walks. I have more walks in my head that I want to write and my dream is to help every single community in the Yukon create their own community walking tour of some kind so that there’s interpretive offers all around the Yukon.”

Rita Smith was born and raised in the Yukon and started her career working on light duty vehicles right out of High School. She is currently the Service Manager at a busy heavy equipment shop and at night she operates her horse farm, GoldSmith Morgans. She can also be found fishing, running, gardening, caring for her family, her dogs and planning her next adventure.

CLIFF DIVING WITH A HORSE

Hello all, here is a brief introduction of my new column and who I am, as well as a beautiful visual story of “hitting the dirt,” which is in actuality, the life saving technique used in the event of an emergency while riding a horse

To clarify, one kicks both feet out of the stirrups, leans forward and promptly dismounts, landing feet together in under 0.0003 of a second. I was very good at it growing up, the fastest actually.

But this particular day, Maddie (my horse) was faster.

Being born and raised here in the Yukon, I have an embedded lust for adventure and a can-do attitude that is partnered with the determination of a stone, a thrill seeking spirit and Type 1 Diabetes. Life has been pretty exciting for this little girl so far.

I am not too sure exactly how I

got blessed with the gift of walking on the edge of danger everywhere I go, but I am definitely missing that part of the brain that tells me “You can’t do this.”

My family tree is littered with members that excelled in strength, endurance, a need for speed, mechanical engineering, music, amazing cooks, farming, weapon specialists, and sharp shooters to

name a few. Growing up with a competitive older brother, it’s no wonder I was taking apart carburetors, riding dirtbikes, competing on horseback and having my first job at age ten.

Also flying out solo In my cadet dress uniform at age 13 to represent the Yukon in marksmanship (for my sharp shooting skills). If there was something I wanted to

do or try, there were just no filters that existed for being female or a Type 1 diabetic or perhaps even much younger or smaller than everyone around me.

Now at the age of 42, I have lost track of the vast amount of skills I have acquired over the years. But I remind myself of them pretty quickly on the days I am doing everything from changing a

something I could absolutely do all day, seven days a week if I had the choice.

I have been told my smile is the brightest when I am out with my horses and when I am out on the water with a fishing rod in my hands. I have acquired a vast amount of my skills from trial and error accompanied by my ability to laugh at myself.

This is how the column name A Modern Day Klondike Kate came to be. Now some don’t know, but there were two Klondike Kates. Kate Ryan was a pioneer that came up through Seattle to the Yukon by means of dogsled and horseback, while being a nurse maid to those around her and acquired a position with the RCMP in Whitehorse and was a well respected inspiration to everyone around her. Then along came Kathleen (Kitty) Rockwell, a dancer and vaudeville star during the Gold Rush that in some people’s eyes, almost stole the good name of Klondike Kate.

So please be advised, A Modern Day Klondike Kate ence to the original woman of the Klondike with her many escapades (and not the naughty one). Either way, there must have been some entertainment along the way in Klondike Kate’s escapades.

travels and being encouraged by many friends, family and editors, I decided to start my own column. My goal is to not only bring enter tainment and knowledge from my own failures and experiences, but enlighten many people to the risks that the Yukon holds if you are not prepared, as well as be a guiding light to the many women out there (you can do anything you put your mind to!).

ity for figuring things out on my

own, my ability to laugh at myself when I fail, and my strength to pick myself back up again over and over is where this journey begins.

There will be stories about bear encounters, kamikaze trailering missions, wildlife interactions on and off horse back, mechanical engineering in the bush, being busted fly fishing in pink panties, chainsaw, power tool and heavy equipment mishaps and even death defying street bike incidents and feats of strength.

My first story will reflect on having respect for animals that can kill you, but somehow they have enough respect for you that they don’t. Quite honestly this story has to do with my chestnut mare Maddie trying to save her own carcass and leaving mine behind. You will hear a few stories about this stout, fiery and brave chestnut mare who is pregnant with so much opinion that we have to have a conversation about whether we are going to challenge that bear or not.

It was two weeks after I had

astic about their job. Well I got more than I bargained for with my western cattle cutting Morgan with heritage bloodlines back to 1789 and with an attitude.

Normally when you purchase a new horse, it’s a very good idea to get them used to the general area by means of walking them on a lead. I lived in a new country subdivision that was bustling with production. I had spent about two weeks getting her used to the green belt behind us and common sense escaped me that day as I was too busy getting excited in anticipation to finally jump in the saddle and get blazing some trail. Being around these animals since the age of seven and being on horseback through thousands of miles of trail, you would think I would’ve learned how to sit still for a few minutes and assess the current day and what challenges lay ahead.

Yet again, my sense of adventure got the best of me. Saddled up I set out on a beautiful afternoon with my Maddie hot to trot. We had already done a lot of riding together just not in this par-

cerned about. Rustling in the woods on either side of us accompanied with voices. You could hear them, but you could not see a thing in all of the low lying willows. This was my second que, that I should have performed the manoeuvre called “hit the dirt” which as previously stated, I have always been very good at. Not today. I waited two seconds too long. Just then a backhoe came roaring around the corner and because of the lay of the land the machine was at low idle, you didn’t see it until it came around the corner about 150 feet up the trail.

Because Maddie and I had not built up trust between one another yet and instead of looking to me for guidance, she took to turning herself into a 20-foot-tall stone dragon and then her western ranching lineage came out in full force.

contacted the dirt, I hit hips first on the downhill side, and slammed my helmet against the ground, (thankfully it protected my fragile eggshell head). Looking back at where I landed, I noticed I happened to land in the only spot that was not dense with cut stumps. I know I am likely going out of this world in an epic and exciting crash, but I just was hoping it wouldn’t be as a Rita shishkabob. Either way, my years of dirt bike crashes had well prepared me for turning into a ragdoll before I hit the ground followed by my famous profanity.

L’artiste Meg Walker dans son studio, à Dawson

Following the greenbelt behind a few houses while riding the ridge of a cliff, I could hear chain sawing and equipment operating in the distance. The lay of the land made it difficult to discern where the noise was coming from, and I could tell by Maddie’s ears and the tension in her body that she was also trying to figure out where the

This should have been my first que. As I was following the ridgeline littered in old cut stumps and log piles with the sun beaming down on us, Maddie came to an abrupt lock up, with ears perched forward on her giraffe-like neck. I could hear what she was con-

There was no longer time for me to “hit the dirt” as she had spun completely 180 degrees on her heels and was at full gallop ripping back through the trail, jumping every log pile in our way and I was desperately trying to find a safe dislodging location but there were far too many trees, stumps cut at a wicked angle and log piles.

While I was riding out my “rodeo” and contemplating my life’s decisions, I quickly remembered there was a 30-foot sloughedoff cliff coming up. Well Maddie remembered too and she made the lovely, abrupt brake stall at the edge of the cliff and I was gracefully launched over her and approximately 15 feet away from where she stopped. During this unplanned flight over the cliff I had a lot of time to go over childhood memories, and realizing this was not my idea of living out my superwoman status. I saw a lot of jagged stumps go past underneath me and when I

I laid there for a brief moment and did a systems check. The only thing that seemed to be not so great was my collar bone, despite the doctor stating it was the equivalent of a 60km an hour car crash. I picked myself up, opened up my little LG flip phone and alerted the family that Maddie was on her way home. I had about a kilometer to walk, while holding my right arm and asking myself whether I am cut out for this anymore. Horses really do have a way of making you self reflect.

A quick trip to emergency saw no broken bones despite feeling like I had a broken collar bone and cracked ribs. I do truly believe I was gifted with titanium in my bones and future stories will help to paint the picture. Up to this point I lived by the rule “you are either in the hospital or you are at work.” Even being pumped up on the little magic house pills like Tylenol and a whole concoction of drugs, I still could not move for a few days. I Iicked my wounds and revised my training plan and Maddie and I have had thousands of miles of amazing Yukon adventures to date. I just make sure my feisty red dragon has a say now in our adventure for the day. n

GATHER

CELEBRATION SALAD

I returned to Whitehorse from travels in Greece in late June, just in time to go on a successful morel mushroom hunt

My neighbour harvested two tomatoes from her greenhouse the same week. The arugula in our garden is coming up nicely, and the beet greens are small and tender. The first new beets are showing up in the grocery stores. In Greece, my friend and I were served grilled pita bread brushed with olive oil and oregano. So good.

After all this summary foraging, gardening and culinary successes, I was in celebratory mode. Why not put those ingredients together with grilled halloumi and sweet red onion for a twist on the classic Tuscan panzanella salad?

Quintessentially summary, a panzanella starts with fresh, juicy tomatoes, chunks of rustic bread, dried and toasted, and often, some kind of cheese. From

there, we can just wing it, adding new wild or garden ingredients as they come into season, including berries for the vinaigrette. If you don’t have blueberries in the freezer from last year, substitute fresh raspberries or strawberries.

The Canadian ones are showing up in the fruit section now.

This is not a quick salad, but you can spread the preparation over a couple of days. Throw some smokies on the grill to go with, or big slices of eggplant brushed with oil, and let the celebration begin.

MOREL MUSHROOM, ROASTED BEET AND HALLOUMI PANZANELLA SALAD

SALAD

To prepare in advance: MORELS

• 20 gr (about 3/4 cup) dried morel mushrooms

• 1 cup water

• 1 Tbsp butter

• 1 Tbsp olive oil

• 1 clove garlic, minced

• 1 Dash of soy sauce

Method:

1. In a small bowl, soak morels in water until soft, about 20 to

30 minutes, until soft. Squeeze the mushrooms over the bowl so excess liquid falls into the bowl. Save the li-

quid. Transfer morels to a small plate.

2. Melt butter and oil in a frying pan over medium heat. Once

sizzling, add morels and sauté, stirring occasionally, until morels are aromatic, about 5 minutes. Add garlic and sauté for 2 minutes.

3. Add reserved soaking liquid and simmer until all the liquid has evaporated. Add a dash of soya sauce at the end.

4. Cool to room temperature and add to the salad.

BEETS

• 4 good-sized beets

• 2 tsp olive oil

• 1/2 tsp Kosher salt

Method:

1. Scrub beets, remove root end, place in a small pot and cover with cold water. Bring to the boil, reduce heat and simmer for 40 minutes. Stop before beets are completely cooked.

2. Remove from heat, drain, and

cover beets with cold water. Slip the beets out their skins with your hands. Transfer to a cutting board and trim ends. Once cool, slice into sixths or eighths.

3. Toss with olive oil and salt and roast in a 400F oven until beginning to brown, or grill on the barbecue about 10 minutes, until browned and beginning to blister.

4. Cool to room temperature until you’re ready to build the salad. *

HALLOUMI

• 1 250 gram log of halloumi cheese

• 2 tsp olive oil

Method:

1. Slice halloumi lengthwise into 4 thick pieces. Brush the sides of each one with olive oil.

2. Grill on the barbecue over a medium hot fire for 3 to 4 minutes each side. * Alternatively, sauté in a cast-iron pan over medium heat for about 4 minutes per side, until cheese begins to brown and blister.

3. Cool to room temperature then cut into cubes before adding to the salad.

PHOTOS: Miche Genest

PITA

• 1 8-inch round Greek-style pita bread

• 2 tsp olive oil

• 1 tsp dried oregano

Method:

*Tip. It’s not worth turning on the BBQ just for the beets, halloumi and pita, but if you’re barbecuing one night, after supper is cooked grill the beets, halloumi, and pita with the residual heat. Just don’t forget about them while you’re eating! Refrigerate beets and cheese and wrap pitta in parchment for salad the next day.

Assembly:

• 3 large ripe tomatoes, chopped into 1-inch chunks

• 1/4 large purple onion, thinly sliced

• A handful of baby arugula and beet leaves

• Prepared morels, beets, halloumi and pita

• 1 Tbsp olive oil

• A handful of fresh herbs like basil, Greek oregano, mint, and/or dill

• 1/4 to 1/2 cup Blueberry Vinaigrette

Method:

1. Place tomatoes, onions, morels, halloumi and pitta in a large bowl. Pour 1 tablespoon of olive over top. Toss thoroughly and let sit for 10 minutes to allow the pita to soften in the tomato juices and oil.

2. Layer arugula and baby beet leaves on a mediumsized platter. Pile the tossed salad on top. Scatter beet pieces over the salad, along with fresh herbs. Drizzle Blueberry Vinaigrette over top and serve the remainder at the table.

3. To serve, have each person spoon salad onto their plate and drizzle more vinaigrette over top, adding salt and pepper to taste.

Makes four main courses or 6 side servings.

BLUEBERRY VINAIGRETTE

• 1/2 cup wild blueberries, fresh or frozen

• 1/4 cup balsamic vinegar

• 1/4 cup olive oil

• 1 tsp birch syrup

• 1 tsp Kosher salt

Method:

Combine all ingredients in a food processor or blender and blend until smooth. Pour into a jar and refrigerate until ready to use. Will keep for 7 to 10 days.

Makes about 3/4 cup. n

A PIECE OF CAKE

I wanted to bake a cake

My son was about to turn four and his accompanying birthday party had inspired me to create something special for him and his buddies. I thought that instead of purchasing a cake, like I had done the previous years, I would surprise him with a birthday dessert that would utterly delight him.

A ‘froggie’ birthday cake seemed to be in order he just adores frogs right now.

Now, to be upfront, I’m no Cake Boss. My sister on the other hand is a Cake Boss! She’s gone to culinary school and can bake and decorate a cake like nobody’s business. I on the other hand, have not had much success in this particular area. Just ask my husband, for whom I tried to make a giant

birthday twinkie to go along with his Ghostbusters fandom. To put it mildly, I ended up presenting him with a fairly solid birthday brick a few years ago.

So, the idea of trying again was a little daunting. But I figured, this time, my audience would be a bunch of little ones who would likely just see a lot of sugar. Far less pressure.

Even still, I wanted a trial run before I went big. So I planned to start with cupcakes for my son’s early learning program. Just nice, easy, box-mix cupcakes that I would add some green icing and candy eyeballs to and make them look like cute mini frogs.

He’d love that.

It would be so simple. Or at least it was supposed to be.

That was until the moment before we started to decorate, when my darling boy decided that he no longer wanted frog cupcakes. No. He wanted Bluey and Bingo cupcakes (side note to parents: if you haven’t checked out Bluey yet, give it a go. It’s def-

initely one of the best kids shows I’ve seen).

Great! How are we going to make Bluey and Bingo cupcakes? I thought. And after a quick google search for ideas, I realized that I did not have the tools or time to make them look anything like the pictures I found. And I was just about to say ‘’sorry, Bud’’ when I also realized that I needed to put my pride away and just do what I could to make the kid happy.

After all, that was the point of this anyway, right?

So we improvised. I mixed up a batch of blue icing and another of orange and the two of us got to work decorating the cupcakes as best we could. And I’m pleased to say that the experience was filled with laughter.

And even more laughter when we saw the final product.

Sure they looked more like foxes than cartoon dogs, but my child was thrilled. He knew what they were supposed to be, and he just loved that he had been able to make a decision and help get the task done.

‘’I get to bring these for my friends’’ he exclaimed with sheer pride.

Because of this, I strategically hid the fact that by morning the candy eyes had begun to melt, and each Bluey and Bingo now had bloodshot eyes that looked something out of a horror picture. Luckily, my son is easily distracted by bowls of fruit salad, and I quickly used up the last of my candy eyes to replace the scary ones.

All was well and Little Buddy had a great time sharing his treat with his friends on his birthday. It was promising for my plans to execute a three-tier ‘froggie’ cake for his party the very next weekend.

After all, I had learned a few things from my cupcake adventure. Firstly, buy enough supplies so that you can make extras, in case of mistakes. Secondly, don’t provide an opportunity for decorating plans to change. And thirdly (and most importantly), don’t add the eyes the night before or the

frog will look hungover! Good lessons.

And for the most part, things went pretty smoothly. Sure, some of the cakes didn’t bake all the way through and needed to be cut up. Plus, I had a heck of a time getting my icing to look smooth (not confident to try fondant just yet). But overall, the cake looked pretty darned good. Froggie even had a fruit-roll-up tongue, complete with a painted-on fly! A touch which earned a giggle from my son when came downstairs the next morning and saw the finished product.

He loved it! And it truly made my heart sing. This whole process has stemmed from wanting to do something to surprise him, and it paid off. Not only that, but the journey to get to that point was filled with fun, laughs, (a couple of bloodshot eyeballs) and some good ol’ bonding time with my little boy.

Who could ask for more than that? n

BRAKE FLUID

Regular brake fluid changes ensure that a car’s braking system operates safely and effectively. Modern braking systems use brake fluid to transfer the application of the brake pedal down to the front and rear brakes, to bring the vehicle to a stop. The fluid is usually silicone based, which does not compress, giving a solid pedal feel and an increased temperature rating. The downside to using this style of fluid is that it absorbs moisture from the air. Constant braking causes massive amounts of heat to be generated by the braking components, which is then transferred into the fluid. If there is moisture in the fluid, this will decrease the temperature rating of the fluid, and can result in a soft brake pedal and increased stopping distance. Most manufacturers recommend brake fluid changes every 2 years, regardless of kilometres travelled, but it may need to be changed more frequently if the vehicle is operated under abnormal conditions.

TALES OF NAHGANNE

Red Grossinger is a Sasquatch enthusiast, investigator and a published author living

DISTINGUISHED SASQUATCH ENTHUSIASTS

In the first article, I introduced Sasquatch enthusiasts John W. Burns, John W. Green and Rene Dahinden

In this second article I will present an additional four distinguished Sasquatch researchers.

PETER C. BYRNE (1925-2023)

Peter was born in Dublin, Ireland and later in life served in the Royal Air Force during the Second World War, then moved to the USA in 1950.

He became one of the most prominent and dedicated researchers of Sasquatch and other mysterious entities, beginning in the 1950s and continued non-stop

until his death in 2023, at the age of 98.

Byrne identified himself as a “cryptozoologist explorer” or in other words, a man of means. He travelled the world, forever searching, not only for Sasquatch, but also for other mysterious and uncatalogued entities.

He was involved in 10 films and also a TV series about mysterious entities and was the author of four books dedicated to Sasquatch;

• The Search for Bigfoot: Monster, Myth or Man (1976

• The Monster Trilogy (2013)

• Hunt for YETI (2015)

• The Hunt for Bigfoot (2016)

Along with John Green, Rene Dahinden and Dr. Grover Krantz, Byrne was a member of the “Four Horsemen of Saquatchery.”

DR. GROVER KRANTZ (1931-2002)

Grover was born in Salt Lake City, Utah. Krantz was an Anthropologist, Cryptozoologist and a dedicated Sasquatch researcher who conducted field research in North America, Europe, China and Java.

Krantz served in the U.S. Air National Guard in Utah from 1949 to 1952, while attending the University of Utah. He obtained his doctorate in anthropology in 1971, with his thesis titled “The Origin of Man.” In addition to his regular academic work at various universities, which specialized in all aspects of human evolution, he became focused mainly on researching the Sasquatch phenomena.

He theorized that Gigantopithecus was the ancestor of the Sasquatch, which, during the latter part of the last ice age, along with humans and many species of animals, had crossed from Asia via the Bering Land Bridge into what is now Alaska.

Krantz is credited for authoring around 60 academic articles and 10 books on human evolution, which included Sasquatch. He was known for doing things “his own way” and was reluctant to follow the “traditional scientific way” of research.

His better-known book “Bigfoot Sasquatch Evidence”, was published in 1999. In that book he presents solid calculated evidence of the Sasquatch entity.

DR. JOHN BINDERNAGEL (1941-2018)

John was born in Kitchener, ON. and was a Wildlife Biologist who received his PhD in Wildlife Biology from the University of Wisconsin and worked in Africa, Asia, Oceana and Canada.

In 1975 he moved to British Columbia after becoming interested in Sasquatch, figuring that B.C. was the hotspot for Sasquatch activities in North America.

He strongly believed that the Sasquatch phenomena should get more attention from serious scientists and should be

scrutinized objectively, stating “We can’t bring the evidence to our colleagues because it’s perceived as taboo.” And that is still true today.

In 1998 he published his first book, North America’s Great Ape: The Sasquatch, and his second book in 2010, The Discovery of the Sasquatch: Reconciling Culture, History and Science in the Discovery Process

Bindernagel was honoured in a tribute at the Bindercon Conference in October of 2022, in Courtenay, B.C., where I presented my new book: Nahganne: Tales of the Northern Sasquatch (2022).

J. Robert became interested in Sasquatch while attending the University of Manitoba, taking courses in health sciences, biology and anthropology, in 1970-71. While on a backpacking vacation near Nordegg, AB, in 1973, he came across a 40.64 cm (16 in.) long, human-like footprint, clearly showing five toes, and it was this occurrence that started his quest for the unclassified species called Sasquatch.

Eventually he became a professor of Anatomy and Physiology at the University of Alaska Southeast, at Ketchikan, AK, retiring in 2022.

Alley authored two books on Sasquatch; Raincoast Sasquatch: The Bigfoot/Sasquatch Records of Southeast Alaska, Coastal British Columbia and Northern Washington, from Puget Sound to Yakutat, (2003), and Brushes with Bigfoot: Sasquatch Behavior Reports and Close Encounters, Native and Non-native Perspective, (2021).

In 2011, Robert Alley became aware of my interest in Sasquatch and forwarded a report of Sasquatch activities that occurred a few kilometres south of Beaver Creek, Yukon. That report is documented in Nahganne. Tales of the Northern Sasquatch, p.198. n
