Jickling’s Jabberings with Peter Jickling

The Art of Wes Anderson T

he opening image of The Royal Tenenbaums (2001) provides a valuable portal into the mind of director Wes Anderson. Accompanied by dream-like music, we see a book placed on a wooden desk. The book is rotated, opened, and the library card within is stamped. The book is then closed — revealing its title, The Royal Tenenbaums. It’s a nice meta touch, but it’s also Anderson telling us about the potential of movies as an art form. When discussing books in relation to their film adaptations, one cliché is so ubiquitous it’s virtually taken for granted: “The movie isn’t as good as the book.” Given this, we can’t blame filmmakers for developing an inferiority complex; and yet many of our most passionate and visionary artists and storytellers have chosen film as their primary medium of expression. Wes Anderson is one such person; and by beginning The Royal Tenenbaums with such a direct comparison between films and books he is implying that films can be just as rich and rewarding as the printed word. The rest of the movie goes on to prove exactly that. The plot revolves around a family of child prodigies played by Ben Stiller, Luke Wilson, and Gwyneth Paltrow that crumbled into dysfunction due to the paternal incompetence of their father, Royal (Gene Hackman). Royal, “a prominent litigator until he was disbarred and briefly imprisoned,” spends most of the movie trying to patch things up with his kids and win back his estranged wife, Etheline (Angelica Huston). The actors all deal with the screenplay’s deadpan dialogue wonderfully, but Anderson’s mise en scène steals the show. Every frame is so rich with detail that a Wes Anderson fan can still find himself smiling with new discoveries after a dozen viewings. I love the way seemingly inconsequential elements of the movie continue to weave themselves into the plot long after they should rightfully have been forgotten. For example, early in the story we learn that Chas (Ben Stiller) bred Dalmatian mice as a kid. Such mice show up continually in odd locations throughout the film.

viously been removed. Later, Royal finds the missing item in a closet; it is a stuffed warthog head. Later still, Ritchie (Luke Wilson) rehangs the piece in its original location. Anderson brilliantly orchestrates these events so they resonate with the emotional arch of the film. Beyond its immaculate construction, The Royal Tenenbaums also manages to be hilarious and heartbreaking, and occasionally both simultaneously. This summer Georgia Sauve and I watched all of Wes Anderson’s feature films in order, from the charmingly unpolished Bottle Rocket (1996) to the thoroughly delightful Grand Budapest Hotel (2014). Very soon she will be leaving the territory to attend art school in Nelson, B.C. If any of Wes Anderson’s creative vision has rubbed off on her during the past few months, I can only assume that the following year will be a royal success for her.

“Thinking About the Tomorrow” Yukon First Nations Create a Youth Network by Meagan Deuling

I

t started with a death in the community, a suicide last November. Young people close to the deceased asked each other why it came to that — “What wasn’t there for him? What did he need?” The conversation that started in living rooms extended to teleconferences between communities. Young people talked about what is missing from Yukon communities, isolated and non; they talked about what is in place. The general consensus was “now more than ever young First Nations have so many opportunities, we want to look at that with eyes wide open.” The problem is, there’s a gap between what is available to young First Nations in the Yukon, and what young First Nations in the Yukon have. Kluane Adamek says there’s a lack of motivation and support among First Nation youth in the territory. “There’s so many things we can be involved with, we have to know what they are.” Adamek noticed many First Nations in other parts of the country have youth networks; when she sat on the National Youth Council for the Assembly of First Nations for three years she wished she had a body supporting her from the Yukon. She realized the network could bridge the gap, and bring young people to opportunities in

all Canadians should understand those agreements, but especially First Nations. “It’s so important to understand where that came from, what it means. We have a responsibility to know.” There will be a chance for youth to connect with elders on the land — Adamek says it was important for the gathering to be held on traditional territory, and the Teslin Tlingit Council offered the location. There will be conversation circles for males and females, in which gender roles will be discussed. Adamek says men don’t really have roles in the community; they will talk about how Photo: Amos Scott – Dene Nahjo it used to be. Dawson’s Public Gardens Are A Treat D

awson has a long history of dressing up with flowers and plants. When Martha Louise Black was the chatelaine at the Commissioner’s Residence on Front Street, one of her innovations was to plant both food crops and floral adornments. The current summertime look of the residence is intended to reflect the period of the Black occupancy and to coincide with the Commissioner’s Tea on the spacious lawns. While Parks Canada struggles to have flowers blooming by early June, the agency does a pretty good job of brightening up the place. Flower-season really gets going after the Victoria Day weekend, when plant vendors — both local and trucked in from Whitehorse — are among the busiest venues at the annual Gold Show in May. Porches and entrances suddenly burst with hanging baskets and those explosive plastic flower bags, full of varied seeds that erupt with fresh blooms week after week. Last season’s rose bushes are hauled out of winter storage and encouraged to grow another year;

a natural part of a walking trail as well, and eventually it was the site where two boulders were located to hold plaques honouring three men who had a lot to do with the foundation of the town: George Dawson, Jack McQueston, and William Ogilvie. Around the same time, it became standard practice to plant flowers along the sides of what was becoming known locally as “Norm’s Hump” (after our superintendent of Public Works). Eventually this flower and shrub planting became a serious affair, one that has attracted the notice of Communities in Bloom several times. Giving the garden (now worth seeing every summer) a more gracious name was one of the final steps in transforming a bare service road into an attractive public treasure. It’s also worth noting that the scents from the many plants just about completely cover any lingering fragrance from the cistern.

soon has the town sparkling. We have public gardens too. Martha didn’t garden alone, and between the two world wars Victory Garden was established next to what was then the Territorial Administration Building (now the Dawson City Museum) on Fifth Avenue. There are a number of other gardens around town now; the most recent is outside the town hall/fire hall complex on Front Street, where a recently installed set of flag poles have crisp new flags flapping in the breeze. I’ve mentioned some of the gardens along the dike in a recent column. Now I want to move a bit further down the dike to the other major floral garden. It’s an example of how a silk purse can be made out of a sow’s ear. The area now known as Mary Hanulik Garden (after a woman famous for her home gardens) started out life as an unfortunate necessity. There’s a covered cistern near the top of the dike that fills-up from the sewage treat-

Rise of the Nerds

5

ComiCon comes to the Yukon by Joslyn Kilborn over. “This isn’t limited to a small group of people,” says Prentice. “Everyone likes something, whether they identify as nerd or not.” So what is YukomiCon? It’s a three-day convention celebrating all things nerd at Coast High Country Inn and Yukon Convention Centre, from August 8 to 10. Yes, there will be celebrities, like Kevin Sorbo, or as everyone from a certain generation knows him, Hercules. But that’s just the beginning, says Prentice. This is to be a distinctly Yukon event. “It’s by Yukoners for Yukoners — it’s right in the name.” This means inclusivity is important. Tickets are set at a reasonable $45 to make the event accessible. Endless volunteer opportunities are available for those interested in trading 12 hours of their time for a weekend pass. They’ve even partnered with the Whitehorse Boys and Girls club to offer kids a variety of ways to attend the convention for free. There are workshops on Cosplay, animation, and scriptwriting; there are discussion panels on how to break into different industries ranging from film to graphic novels; there’s an Artist Alley where local artists, like cartoonist Jim Robb, can hold tables and exhibit their work. There’s also the Edge of Reality gallery show working in conjunction with YukomiCon, which opened August 1 at Arts Underground. It’s all science fiction and fantasy art with submissions accepted from anyone and everyone. There’s a costume ball; there are game tournaments ranging

from LAN to cards to boards to roleplaying. More than a chance to see your favourite sci-fi actor, says Prentice, YukomiCon is “an attempt to engage and foster nerd community in the Yukon, to make connections and space for the many creatives living and working here.” And what is nerd community? According to Prentice, who self-identifies as “a huge nerd”, it’s about being “unironically, enthusiastically, emphatically excited about anything.” There can be sports nerds and classical music nerds. “Nerd,” says Prentice, “is changing — once upon a time it was an othered group, a bullied group. But everyone saw Lord of the Rings when it came out, let’s be honest. With wider acceptance of nerd culture, nerdy things have been able to start exploring important humanitarian issues, like feminism, racism, LGBTQ, etcetera.” Although this nerd convention will primarily focus on sci-fi and fantasy fandom, these genres are, when boiled down, vehicles for stories. And stories, says Prentice, are tools of social examination

and change. “Stories allow us to explore and accept views that are different from our own,” he says. “Plus, they’re a lot of fun.” Prentice hopes people attending the convention will really get into it, especially with their costumes. But his sincerest hope, he says, is that YukomiCon continues. Especially because his job will prevent him from attending this year. “Come hell or high water, I will be there next year.”

Jovanovic has similarly big dreams for YukomiCon. “William Shatner,” he says, “or Joss Whedon. That’s who I’d like to see up here.” Joslyn Kilborn is a Whitehorsebased writer. Contact her at editor@whatsupyukon.com.

If you didn’t know that the Yukon has a thriving nerd community, you aren’t alone. Given both the North’s reputation for robustness and the long-ingrained notion of fragility associated with nerds, it isn’t surprising that a comic and gaming convention hasn’t happened here before. And yet the apt name of this weekend’s first-ever comic convention in Canada’s North — YukomiCon — so naturally blends the Yukon name with the ComiCon tradition. The name also reflects how naturally YukomiCon came into existence, as if the desire for such an event was in the mountain air. Planning began eight months ago in Titan Games and Hobbies on Main St. in Whitehorse at an open-call meeting with the purpose of gauging interest; interest was high. According to Zvonko Jovanovic, who works at Titan, around 65 people showed up. The small basement was standing room only. The meeting was spearheaded by Caitlin Beaulieu, who Jovanovic describes as “the spark that started the forest fire.” But she wasn’t the only one with the idea. Christi Matthews is rumored to have entered Titan only a day before the meeting with her own idea to have a ComiCon in Whitehorse. And she had something important with her — funding. A board was quickly put together, on which both Beaulieu and Matthews now sit. Additional sponsorship showed up out of the blue. A few hundred tickets have already been pre-sold. According to Vice-President of the board, Colin Prentice, support has been overwhelming, and comes from all

t was a rainy and windy afternoon in LePage Park on Friday, July 11, when author Jessica Simon started reading her poem, “A Spot to Watch the Fireworks”. She was followed by Whitehorse-based writers Joanna Lilley, Jerome Stueart, Christine Hakim, and Lorri Garris. It was the first event organized by the new society: The Yukon Writers` Collective Ink. “The Whitehorse Poetry Society decided to dissolve as a formal society because we didn’t have enough capacity to keep on top of the administration. However we wanted to ensure that the Yukon continued to have a writinggroup,” Joanna Lilley says about the Yukon Writers’ Collective Ink. Kathy Munro and Lilley led the effort to set up the new collective. All kinds of poems were heard during the event, from poems about the daily news, to poems about the Whitehorse Trolley. Manitoba Poet Luann Hiebert arrived directly from the airport; her flight was delayed, and she used the last five minutes of the event to announce the launch of her first book, What Lies Behind, which she read from. Hiebert officially launched her

poetry collection on July 15, at the Whitehorse Public Library. She is an adjunct professor at Providence University College and is currently pursuing her PhD in English Literature at the University of Manitoba. “My first book of poems should not be narrow in one theme,” Luann says. “It`s about almost everything, from motherhood, to love, confronted with death. What Lies Behind is also about looking beyond things. “I remember a door I saw in Newfoundland. It was a door between two shops in a village and I was wondering: What lies behind? It is the little things which can inspire me to write a poem.” The Yukon Writers’ Collective Ink also presented Clea Roberts book launch of Hier ist, wo wir von Bord gehen, the German translation of her poetry collection Here is Where we Disembark on Thursday, July 17 in the Whitehorse Visitor Information Centre. Roberts read her poems in English, followed by the translation, which was read by a German speaker. “It’s the first time I’ve heard my poems in a different language,” Roberts said. “I like the German language, I

like complex words, for example schadenfreude (which means the feeling of being happy about another person’s failure). These words are like a little poem itself because there is a lot of meaning in one word.” Roberts’ poems are about life in the Yukon. “I finally feel like I have rooted in the Yukon. I’ve lived here for many years, but I am still fascinated and inspired by the beauty of the land,” Roberts says. What Lies Behind is published by Turnstone Press, and is available at Mac`s Fireweed Books for $17.00. Hier ist, wo wir von Bord gehen, published by Edition Rugerup, is available at Mac`s Fireweed Books and Well Read Books for $22.95. Elke Reinauer is a German writer based in Whitehorse. We invite everyone to come to our community and participate in this event! When we gather for our Annual Hand Games competition in Ross River we also play, sing, and dance. In typical Ross River fashion, guests can anticipate true Dena hospitality – to be fed and treated well and to go home happy. We look forward to seeing you! HISTORY of Hand Games in Ross River For thousands of years, the site of Tu Łidlini, or Ross River, has been an important meeting place for people from across the north. Here, on the banks of the Ross and Pelly Rivers, people have to come together to share stories, songs, feasts, dances, and games. A famous part of these gatherings has always been Nah-Ah, or Hand Games. Later this month, the tradition of Hand Games will continue, as Ross River will be hosting the 28th Annual Yukon Hand Games Championships. This will be a 3-day event, taking place from August 15-17th. We are anticipating a big turnout, with teams coming from across the north. In the spirit of community and with memories of the ancestors that passed down this game to us, we will work to make this event another memorable one and to continue passing down these teachings. Years ago, Ross River was a principal destination and would host tremendous gatherings to play Hand Games. Families would hike here with their pack dogs or they would travel by moose skin boat down the rivers, so that they could be here by the time the games began. There are stories of the old village site crawling with people and of the sights, sounds and smells of tents and campfires throughout the valley. The famous drumbeat would echo through the rivers and mountains that surround the community. And soon, the drums will sing again as people come from far and wide to be apart of this historic event.

Registration: Friday, August 15th from 4 – 8 pm in Ross River Anyone Welcome, both Adult and Youth Division 6 People Per Team, $900/team registration fee in Adult Division, $300/team in Youth Division

“L

et them eat cake”, is the famous saying, attributed to Marie Antoinette. After all, what could be a more delightful thing to do? For Heather Anderson the answer is, decorating cake; but that doesn’t mean just any decoration. She likes large, multi-tiered, three dimensional, packed with detail, in-your-face cakes. For this decorator, no request is too large or too complex. Anderson arrived in the Yukon from Alberta in 1999. Her interest in cake was sparked after watching Food Network challenge shows. “I was amazed at what can be done with cake — sculpt it, stack it, air brush it... and when you’re all done you’ve got an amazing piece of edible art,” Anderson says. After bantering with the idea of starting her own cake business, she decided to leave the office work environment in favour of designing you-know-what. “I wasn’t sure there was going to be a big market for custom cakes like I do, but there is. I am

8 so glad that I get to do what I love every day,” she says. During the past few summer months, Anderson has been busy creating custom designs for countless weddings, baptisms, and children’s parties. Her designs range from super heroes to Disney characters to three dimensional sci-fi fantasies to sophisticated floral masterpieces. Yet, despite all the unique designs, Anderson is hankering for more exclusive creations. “I have always wanted to do Cat in the Hat or Alice in Wonderland. “I love the quirkiness of the themes, you can go so big and wild with your design and it fits. I love tall cakes, especially ones that have angles and different shapes — it’s the challenge of building it. It is so fun to watch them come together, tier by tier,” Anderson says. There is no doubt that intricate cake designs can present challenges. But what about the ever-sohard choice of butter cream versus fondant? Each is sweet and delicious. Each can transform a cake

into something beautiful. Anderson leans towards the lovely butter cream: “Its light, creamy and melt in your mouth satiny texture.” However, she does enjoy the fondant, especially because she takes pride in making it herself. In fact, she makes everything from scratch, ensuring a traditional, flavorful taste that may leave you screaming for more. Between August 8 and 10, Anderson will set up shop at YukomiCon, taking place at the Yukon Convention Centre. She will be showcasing her cakes and cupcakes — which are just as detailed and scrumptious as her cakes. There will also be a children’s cake designing contest, with gift certificates awarded to the winners. For the adults (no, you haven’t been forgotten), there will be plenty of samples for you to enjoy. For information, visit www.klondikecakes.com. Angela Szymczuk is a Whitehorse-based writer. y lack of birding skills used to be a secret shame. When it did come out, it was with an embarrassed acknowledgment that despite a background in biology and an intense love of nature, I was at best a “crap birder”. That, however, was inaccurate. I was no kind of birder, for I had given up before even starting. I’ve had people approach me with a similar feeling about plants, particularly edible ones. “But there are so many!” is the common refrain. “How does one know where to start?” I was recently given a nudge in the bird department that reminded me that we all start as beginners, and that at any point we can begin. I had the great fortune to spend a June week in Vermont in the company of writers, aspiring and professional, from all walks of life. One whose vocation you might expect was an English teacher at a community college in Philadelphia named Jamie. Though we met in line for a drink, we ended up getting to know each other by sharing our love and knowledge of the natural world on early morning forays into the surrounding countryside. He seemed to know every bird by song, and my plant identification skills (which in that foreign land amounted to recognising families and close relatives) were sufficient to expand his awareness.

Cindy Klippenstein, taxidermist

Taxidermy Whitehorse artist Cindy Klippenstein shows her unique artistic vision by Carl Christensen

S

Klippenstein travelled south to Springtown, Texas where she enrolled in the All Trophy’s School of Taxidermy. She’s since worked with deer, ravens, otters, lynx, and more, but Fur and Loathing will almost entirely feature squirrels. “Squirrels are pretty adorable and funny looking,” she says. “They also look great as pirates.” Klippenstein feels her show may not be for everyone, but invites people to have a look and not take it too seriously. “I want people to come out and have a good laugh, that’s all,” she says. “I have a feeling somebody is going to have their feelings hurt, so I want to apologize to all the squirrel sympathizers out there.” Local trappers donated the squirrels used in the show, and proceeds from the opening night gala went to the Mae Bachur Animal Shelter. In the future, Klippenstein plans to offer custom-made novelty taxidermy for those seeking unique gifts, but also embraces the more traditional side of the craft. “I do want to be a serious taxidermist too. I’m not officially open as a business yet, but I’d like to be in the next couple of months. It’s actually a really great profession. There’s a huge demand for it here

ure, you’ve seen a moose head mounted on a wall before. It probably had really big antlers, too. But was it re-enacting a scene from Dirty Dancing? Or perhaps guarding a chest full of pirate treasure? This month, Cindy Klippenstein’s new exhibit Fur and Loathing is open at Northern Front Studio in Waterfront Station. The gallery showcases Klippenstein’s artistically rendered taxidermied squirrels, portraying everything from local musician Ben Mahony, to scenes from movies like Brokeback Mountain. The show will be the first public presentation of her taxidermy work, though she has been creating artwork for years. Klippenstein always saw herself working as an artist, and for years she studied painting and sculpture at the University of Manitoba. Eventually, however, she felt a calling that moved her elsewhere. “In the summers while I was in art school I worked at a hunting and fishing lodge,” she says. “I got to meet a lot of hunters and learned about skinning animals and the whole other side of the process. “I soon realized this was an area where I could combine all my interests.” To study the art of taxidermy

Champagne and Aishihik First Nations Look to Uncover Heritage and Culture Through Photographs by Samantha Dawson

K

lukshu village, or Klukshu Łu Ghą is an important part of who Sheila Joe is. The heritage resources officer for the Champagne and Aishihik First Nations (CAFN) spent a lot of time with her grandparents while growing up, and looks back on her time there fondly. She gets her sense of belonging from that community. Back then, she didn’t pay as much attention to the cultural aspect of going fishing at the village, and the rich history of the place: “What I remember most are the enormous amounts of fish, we’d gaff them and pull them up using willow and my grandmother would clean the fish,” Joe says. “It’s just the memories of me being there with my grandparents… [my grandmother] would do most of the work, cleaning and drying. We were very fortunate to spend a lot of time out there.” That’s why she’s excited for a new project underway at CAFN: to honour their elders by bringing them together with CAFN youth. Champagne and Aishihik are hosting oral history sessions in each of their traditional communities, starting with Klukshu village August 11 to bring history to light.

“We hadn’t had a session like this before. I wanted to gather our elders who lived there and had a connection with Klukshu in the past,” Joe says. She hopes to gather as many stories from the CAFN elders as possible. The goal is to have people ready to sit down with elders to record and transcribe their stories about the different traditional communities, including Champagne. “I knew it was always a part of our history… [but now], our elders are getting older if we don’t get that history it will be lost,” says Joe. The event is open to all CAFN citizens and there will be a translator present so that elders can tell their stories in whichever language they choose, likely English or Southern Tutchone. The session is part of a twoday CAFN culture camp that ties language, culture, and heritage together. The plan is to show historical photographs and maps on a large screen to spark discussion and storytelling.

their memories back,” she adds. In one instance, Joe used Google Earth, an online tool that allows the viewer to explore landscapes digitally and in real time, to help elders show Joe place names around Dezadeash Lake, as well as different historical trails and trade-routes. “We can get the information from our elders and we can share that with our youth,” Joe says. The session will also help determine where families used to live. Some had cabins in Champagne, Tutshi, or Aishihik. In Champagne, there were potlatch and clan houses that Joe would like to hear --Sheila Joe about. Those potlatches served as a time of memories and information, herit- celebration and dancing, she says. There was also a trading post, age workers will be there to record and document the event while a Taylor and Drury store, an RCMP sharing tea and a meal. While the office, and a church in the comphotos will be up for everyone to munity. When people from other see, participants can potentially communities came to visit, they would decorate their sled-dogs break out into smaller groups. “We want to get elders and with bells and people would hear youth together,” Joe says. “They them coming. At one point, there do remember those stories, some- were even rodeos in Champagne. But things have changed drastimes these pictures help draw Some of the photos, from peoples’ personal collections and from the Catherine McClelland collection, date back to the 1890s. In one old photo, a group of children stand in front of a cabin at Klukshu, which was mainly a fishing camp. “We have the stories of people taking bundles of fish to Champagne,” Joe says. tically — and that’s part of the story, says Joe. “Even in my lifetime, I often think, what would my grandpa think now? Things have changed over time but we can’t forget what it was like in the past,” she says. Joe points to technology at Klukshu village such as wood splitters and satellite dishes. However, connecting with the elders is crucial, because they can teach us so much, says Joe. She notes that Alex Van Bibber is now 98 years old “and he’s still out there teaching people.” The oral history session for CAFN citizens will take place in Klukshu on August 11 and then again in Champagne on September 5. “We’re going to each traditional community to have the same type of meeting,” Joe says. For more information on the oral history sessions contact Sheila Joe, heritage resources officer at (867) 456-6891, sjoe@cafn.ca. Samantha Dawson is a Whitehorse-based writer. Yukoners have told us how important water is—for the environment, for people and for the economy. In response, we’ve developed the YUKON WATER STRATEGY AND ACTION PLAN. It’s a plan with six priorities for maintaining the quality, quantity and health of Yukon water for both nature and people. It provides a comprehensive approach for making decisions about water in Yukon. It’s a big-picture plan and we’ll be spending an additional $2.7 million over three years on projects to make it happen.

Miles from Motown, up close

The Soul is Back in Dawson City By Gaby Sgaga

F

or those who like to boogey down, Miles from Motown, formerly the Soul Sunday Band, is back in Dawson to make it happen. Every Sunday night during the summer at the Westminster hotel, Fred Osson, Jennifer Migliorini, Wray Auger, Richard Halliday and Drew Davies take to the stage and bring a little funk into everyone’s lives. Osson, who sings and plays a mean saxophone, is glad to be back. The band decided to end their run two years ago when some of its members moved away. But after a summer of not playing, Osson and remaining members, bass player Auger and vocalist Migliorini, were starting to question their decision. “We were missing the energy,”

PHOTO: Joel Clifton says Osson. “We didn’t intend to pick it back up, but suddenly we didn’t feel quite done. We thought that maybe the decision we had made to stop was wrong.” Unfortunately, the bar where Soul Sunday funked-out for the last 10 seasons is closed this summer. So Osson approached the owner of the Westminster, asking if Sunday night was open. The owner immediately agreed. The band now had a location, but still had to replace its missing members. Local musician Richard Halliday signed on as drummer, but finding a guitar player took some time. “It had to be the right person with the right sensitivity,” says Osson. “You either have the groove or you don’t.” One night, Osson ran into a

musician from Saskatoon named Drew Davies, who had just returned to Dawson after an eight year absence. After other musicians highly recommend Davies’ guitar playing, Osson started to chat up, then court, the guitarist. Before making a final commitment though, Osson wanted to see if the musicians could get along off-stage, as well as on. He invited everyone to his apartment for a night of chilling out. “We listened to music together and by the end of the evening, I knew it would be just fine,” he says. The band then picked some songs, including classics by Aretha Franklin, James Brown, and the Temptations, as well as some modern tunes, and started to practice.

They played their first show just after the summer solstice, and as in previous years, they packed them in — Dawson was glad the band was back. Kath Selkirk, a long-time fan, considers Sunday nights with the band a weekly aerobic exercise. “I dance all three sets,” she says. “It’s a marathon.” Selkirk and her friends are usually the first on the dance floor and they don’t leave until it’s over. “I’m not a good dancer, but I don’t care,” says the soul enthusiast. “I love moving to music. This band has a funky style and good dance tempo. I’m happy they’re back.” The band is happy too. “It feels great to be back on stage,” says Osson.

As for the future of the band, Osson doesn’t know. Davies, the only non-local member, will probably be leaving town in September. “We’re not sure what’s happening after Drew leaves,” says Osson. “But for now, we’re just glad to be doing it again, and are wholeheartedly dedicated to the preservation of the motion of the hips.” Shows take place at the Westminster Hotel every Sunday during the summer, starting at 11 p.m. Gaby Sgaga lives off the grid in her West Dawson cabin with her sled dogs. She enjoys mushing, skijoring and writing about everyday life in the Yukon. Email dawson@whatsupyukon.com
