Rodgers & Hammerstein’s
4th - 7th June 2014
Directors Note As a company, What We Did Next has always strived to produce thoughtprovoking theatre, often tackling modern musicals, ranging from the tragic to the comedic. Taking on a musical standard such as Carousel may seem an unusual choice for the company; perhaps a piece a somewhat more ‘traditional’ sort of theatre company would attempt. However, the shows we often hold in such high regard that confront bigger, more adult themes had to start somewhere, and that somewhere is Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Carousel. The idea for What We Did Next to perform Carousel was formulated some years ago when one of our members came across the curious arrangement of a two piano score for Rodgers and Hammerstein’s sumptuous masterpiece. The idea that something so rich, requiring almost a full orchestra, could be stripped back to its essentials and still be so beautiful really stuck with me. People often think of this show as one which is big and bold, with amazing sets, a working Carousel, detailed costumes and that song Liverpool knows so well, but at its core is a story of love and redemption. It shows us a world that is complicated, that life can be tragic and dark, that domestic violence is not an answer and most importantly that there is hope. It lays the path for musicals to not just be about a big finish and a ‘jazz hands’ ending, but that they can move people. I have tried to get to the core of this story and tell it in our way, stripping it back like the orchestration and hopefully leaving something that shows how timeless Carousel is. It seems so fitting that five years on from our first production we can perform Rodgers and Hammerstein’s favourite musical in the city that has embraced one of its songs so strongly and supported us in the place we call home. As Sondheim so beautifully put it “Oklahoma! is about a picnic; Carousel is about life and death.” Enjoy the show Shaun Holdom-Eyles

What We Did Next Singers The Singers is our relaxed, friendly, non auditioned free choir. We sing a range of songs from musical theatre standards (think Phantom, Avenue Q and everything in between) to motown, through awesome medleys and occasionally something we‘ve arranged ourselves. We‘re very keen on being led by what you the members want, so if you think you‘ve got an excellent song choice then let us know. We meet every Tuesday at 7pm in The Clove Hitch on Hope Street and sing for 2 hours before having a few drinks in the bar afterwards. Although we tend to sing for the fun of it we also perform and can often be found showing off at our popular open mic nights.
