Your home to roam... If you have lived on island for many years, you may ask “What else is there to really do in Anguilla?. It's a really common question around the world. The answer lies in the realisation that being born and/or living in paradise is a blessing which should never be taken for granted. Why not enjoy what many travel miles to experience? So, experience Anguilla like never before. Take a while to

be marvelled by the simple but interesting things that went unnoticed, by the places that you never knew existed and the fun facts about the island that you were not previously aware of. Life is a collection of experiences. Ensure that the full Anguillian experience is included in that collection. After all, you live in paradise so why not take a staycation from time to time?

Eat Local Produce

It's not only an economical benefit to eat local but, the health benefits are immense. Available produce include eggs, poultry and veggies like tomatoes and peppers. Many farmers sell produce via supermarkets, on the road side or at their farm.

Wednesday to Monday 10am- 6pm DINNER By request only. CLOSED: Tuesdays TEL: 264-476-0649

16

Apart from the produce cultivated by farmers on their plot of land and individuals in their backyard, there are delicious fruits that grow in the wild. Common in smoothies, ice-creams or eaten just so, these fruits include: mango (see pg. 21), soursop, sugar apple and sea grapes. Fun Fact: the leaves from some of these fruit trees are used in food preparation and teas. For a list of bushes you can use for tea, go to pg. 20.

Bush Teas BUSH TEA

LEMONGRASS | BAY LEAF | STINGY THYME

Herbal tea bushes grow all around Anguilla. For the most part, it is as simple as walking outside and picking leaves straight from the tree.

LEMONGRASS

Many use them for the alleviation of specific ailments like the cold, insomnia, fever, and headaches. BAY LEAF

STINGY THYME

However, if not to get well, these bushes are used for tea to start the day. If you are not familiar with any of these bushes, it would be best that you ask a local or, go to a restaurant or café and request some Bush Tea.

Some of bushes used for tea include: lemongrass, bay leaf, stingy thyme, sugar apple, soursop and sweet basil. Bay leaf and stingy thyme, which are very aromatic, are also used for food preparation. You may just come across a bay leaf in your rice or stingy thyme with your fish. Soursop leaves are also used as bedding for someone with the fever. It is said to have the ability to "draw out the fever" and so, help the person get over the fever quicker. Take a break over some Bush Tea.

Carimar Beach Club on Meads Bay

If you like the beach, you’ll LOVE Carimar www.carimar.com - carimar@carimar.com - 264-497-6881

The vacation location - the beach! Imagine sitting outside on the balcony hearing the birds singing sweetly and welcoming a new day; the soothing sounds of the waves meeting the shore; and not to forget, the refreshing breeze that fills your lungs. The combination of these experiences can further enhance your mood after a good night's rest at one of Anguilla's accommodations. Undoubtedly, location is a significant factor to consider when choosing where you will stay while on island. One certainly prominent location option is being a few steps away from the beach.

26

Thinking about how to de-stress? A dose of Vitamin Sea will do the trick! If not for the serenity that the atmosphere brings; this location option allows you to take the hassle out of fitness because you can easily go on the beach for a jog, swim or to do yoga. Encountering creator’s block? Spending quality time outdoors and being at one with nature can help inspire creative thinking. Fun Fact: Some days, you may find that you have the whole beach to yourself which is quite ideal for some alone time.

Of the 33 beaches on Anguilla, it is not uncommon for 1, 2 or even 3 beaches to be highly ranked as some of the best beaches in the region or the world. In 2018, Meads Bay (5th), Shoal Bay (6th) and Maundays (9th) ranked in the USA Today 10 Best Readers' Choice. The extensive list of alluring characteristics of Anguilla's beaches are what draw visitors to them. For those who: enjoy long strolls on the beach, there are expansive stretches of beaches; love peace and quiet, there are secluded beaches; or, are more active, some include beach and/or water activities.

Beach where? No matter where you are on island, there is always a beach within a 1 to 2 mile radius of your current location. You may even be lucky to find 2 or 3 beaches within that area. Weather conditions also have the effect of making you say to yourself, “Today feels like a beach day! And, with that, you're at the beach in under 30 minutes! Especially with all the annual events centred around the beach like the August Monday Caribbean Beach Party, Poker Run and Anguilla Day ( pg. 10-13), it's only logical that boutiques and clothing stores on island are prepared for your beach day - whenever, wherever and with whomever that may be.

Or, connect with nature (above and underground) on the mainland. For example, you can view a fossil that is thousands of years old on Katouche Estate. Or, take a trip to one of Anguilla's cays like Sombrero Island which is home to a variety of sea birds and endemic reptiles. And, most definitely, interact with the locals to learn first-hand the intriguing and unique Anguillian mannerisms. Mind you, there is a high chance of adopting Anguilla's #1 phrase, "Aya Lawd!" and, going home with amazing stories, pictures and memories. 38

Rediscovering Anguilla An Island Staycation

• Go from one tip (Windward Point) to the next (West End) • Visit less frequented places (beaches and caves) • Catch the sunrise & sunset • Do land & sea activities

Aim To spend a day unplugged from the hassles of work life and find inspiration in Anguilla's natural beauty while rediscovering what it means to live in paradise.

No matter where you reside, it can be so easy to get stuck in the routine - having tunnel vision and missing out on the amazing opportunities that exist around us. So, I decided to remove the blinds and rediscover Anguilla. Before the crack of the dawn, we were headed out to eastern end of the island to catch the sunrise. After winding roads, we arrived at Windward Point and sat in the Jeep looking out at the horizon as the once dark sky slowly became lit by the vibrant orange of the sunrise. 40

Objectives

When the sun was at "a man’s height”, we walked along the beach and were astonished by the paradox of nature - as the sun boldly announced its presence, the moon and stars quietly retreated from the sky. Windward Point was the ideal location to get away from the usual hustle and bustle with nothing but flora and fauna in sight. As the name implies, it is very windy, therefore, trees - many of which are Frangipani and sea grape trees - are no taller than 2 - 3 feet and lay arched over the ground.

Tips • Rent a vehicle that is suitable for off-road driving. • Wear shoes for hiking and even walking through water. • Go with someone who knows the area. Safety first!

Learning the Lay of the Land

You can be a

tourist in your

own country!

Next stop, the Abadam Hole - a hole in the limestone rock directly connected to the sea. In this area, atop a boulder, I could see both the North and South coasts, Anguilla's surrounding cays and the islands, St. Barths and St. Martin in the distance.

Relatively sun-kissed by this point, we decided to relax in the shade at the lesser-known Katouche Bay. Sitting there consumed by nature, we found ourselves being lulled by the sound of waves breaking softly and gazing at the yellow limestone cliff.

At Blackgarden Bay, we carefully hiked along the sharp sea rocks to a cave with a natural pool of sea water inside. Climbing down into the cave, we entered the relatively shallow pool and floated while listening to the waves outside - a grand reward after the trek.

Having lost track of time, we quickly made our way to visit yet another one of nature's creations, The Arch. Wonderfully placed at the western end of the island, it made for the perfect place to catch the sunset. And, just like that, our day was done.

Next up, the well-known secluded Little Bay which we accessed by descending the limestone cliff. While snorkelling there, we were welcomed by small friendly fish that nibbled on our toes and an octopus camouflaging in the powder-white sand.

Though short, this staycation was centred around Anguilla's unique topographical features and left me wondering what other experiences I've really been missing out on. Maybe next time I will delve deeper into cultural experiences. By: Gesel Hodge

It is, therefore, an ideal location for bird watchers and nature lovers of all ages. Wetland Species Across the 26 natural and artificial wetland sites, over 70 wetlands bird species have been observed. When water levels permit, Anguilla's wetlands can provide unique birding experiences. Anguilla is one of the first sites migratory birds visit on their journey South for the Winter and one of the last on their journey back North. Birding Tours The Anguilla National Trust offers birding tours - both on the mainland and to several of the offshore cays. 42

Rare Sightings A single Caribbean flamingo (also called American flamingo) was spotted in the Cove Pond in 2000. Since June 2015, flamingos have been showing up across Anguilla. Fun Facts • The National Bird of Anguilla is the Turtle Dove (Zenaida Aurita). • The first record of a Longtailed Duck in the Caribbean was after a spotting at Savannah Pond, Anguilla in October 2008.

At the tip of West End near Anguillita: the underwater topography is beautiful and you can always find large numbers of fish in the area as well as fish you very seldom see in other places. Blackgarden: Despite not having as much fish as West End, the scenery on a clear day is incredible. There’s a huge underwater cave with boulders the size of cars that just lie along the sea floor. Little Bay: it is a spot that is calm and always accessible which has an abundance of juvenile fish to take photos with and great topography in some areas. Insta-worthy Anguilla Photo Ops

The hues and vues of Anguilla flawlessly coordinate to create countless photo ops. The carefully blended mix of colours sometimes even deceives the eyes into believing that the photo is actually a painting. Locations such as Backstreet South Hill coined the "Scenic Village" for its provision of a panoramic view of Road Bay; the brightly painted, traditional wooden houses around the island and, the beaches and their dynamic expressions during daytime and at sunset offer amazing ops. Below are some suggestions of hashtags and Instagram accounts you can use and follow to get some inspiration or, simply just to reminisce.

Anguilla's Salt Picking History Documented in reports from the 18th Century, one of Anguilla’s prominent economic activities was salt production. Realising the potential of the naturally occurring salt ponds (in near proximity to the coastline), many Anguillians participated in the harvesting of salt and its exportation regionally and internationally.

With hotter temperatures, water in the salt ponds evaporates leaving a layer of salt on floor of the pond - forming thick, solid salt bars referred to as "cakes". According to Anguillian historian, Don Mitchell QC, during such times salt-pickers, “...bending over, breaking off and lifting up bits of the slab of salt”, would pile the salt onto the floating “flats” to be transported to shore. Fun Facts: The Road Bay Pond was one of the key areas for salt production. The salt was used for salting roads, corning meat, everyday food preparation and for oil refineries in Trinidad.

PHOTOS: ANGUILLA ARCHEOLOGICAL & HISTORICAL SOCIETY

46

After a dry summer in 2018, much attention was drawn to the Road Bay Pond as passersby were amazed by the glistening crystals of salt in the dry areas of pond - formed as a result of the natural process of the salt pond. Legend has it, if you pick the salt, rain would come...

Salt Picking Experience What We Do In Anguilla held a salt-picking educational activity in the Road Bay Pond. The session was led by seasoned saltpickers who were involved in the salt industry. The demonstrated the techniques and recounted their memories of working during that period.

Dominoes AN ANGUILLIAN PASTIME

In Anguilla, passion; sportsmanship; culture and pastime are often associated with the word "Dominoes". The game of Dominoes has been a source for many life lessons and bond building in the Anguillian culture. When not indulging in the highly competitive sport Boat racing, Dominoes is the game - an all year round sport! At family and other gatherings and mostly under a shade-providing tree, it is not strange

to see four persons sitting around a table with their hand either propped up on the table or slightly hidden under the table with seven dominoes or less in hand. And of course, there are always observers who are just as much into the game as the players they often seem to know the game better than the ones playing. Try your hand at one of the domino spots. *Visit wwdia.com/go to find out more about the Art of Dominoes

Fun Fact

The names of the Dominoes (also referred to as "Cards") are labelled based on the number of dots on each side of the centre line. However, 0, 1, 2 & 3 dots have unique names: Blank, S, Deuce and Tres, respectively. For example, one card may have 4 dots on one side and one on the other. That would be referred to as a 4-S. 50

The Jollification of Catching Jacks PHOTOS: RICKIELL HODGE

In Anguilla, Jacks are truly a delicacy sought after by many. However, the process behind having Jacks to eat is not as simple as taking them out of the fridge and frying with flour.

First of all, the signal is the flock of birds diving and, the fish "beating" (jumping) in shore. Followed by trained eyes gazing into the distance to determine what kind of fish it may be.

It really takes a community effort of reporting that Jacks are in, getting the huge net, boat(s) and enough men and, patiently manuevering around the school of Jacks.

The nets that are then deployed can be over 100ft in length and have enough depth to prevent the Jacks from escaping through the bottom. The tricky part is encircling them.

What Happens Next? Because the Jacks are very cautious of their surroundings, encircling them takes time as they could easily become startled and swim out before the net is closed. Imagine pulling in a net with hundreds of pounds of fish that are also pulling in the opposite direction in an effort to escape then loading them up into a boat. It's no easy task.

As difficult as it can be, there's a technique behind it and, our fishermen get it done with dedication and conviction. Much of their catch is distributed around the island with the traditional conch shell blown at times to signal that "Jacks for sale". Some of the catch even makes its way to St. Maarten and the Virgin Islands.
