The warm and welcoming atmosphere created at community festivals could satisfy the appetite of anyone looking to experience the Anguillian culture. However, the significance of these festivals is in the community spirit that is deeply rooted in the cultural fabric of Anguilla. Ever-present in the days of old, it was considered to be a necessary ingredient for survival; through ‘jollification’. The popular Festival Del Mar; Welches Fest and West Fest are a few of the modern interpretations of jollifications. It’s all about keeping the spirit alive! Attend a festival! Socialise and LOCAL-ise! March 2

ANGUILLA SUMMER FESTIVAL

11

Unleash the Feter! The Anguilla Summer Festival, a Caribbean emancipation celebration, has been a part of the island’s festivities for over 40 years now. The festival was tremendously influenced by the local traditional August Monday bazaars and other celebrations that were mainly organised by the churches. To this day, one can still recognise some of the features of African cultural traditions and the great value placed on community spirit. 5 Tips to Maximise your Carnival Experience 1. Get familiar with the songs! 2. Join the Fete! 3. Stay hydrated! 4. Learn about the Carnival Culture 5. Hard Lee! (see next page)

Anguilla Boat Race Season

2017 Champion of Champions - Blue Bird

More than a sport, boat racing in Anguilla is the preservation of the techniques developed by the local sailors and shipwrights in times past and a celebration of their resilience. To observe the 50th Anguilla Day, the 8-hour round-theisland race beginning and ending in Sandy Ground began with the sounding of the horn by renowned captain and Anguilla's past Chief Minister, Sir Emile Gumbs.

Sir Emile Gumbs and daughter, Catherine Orchard, at Sandy Ground before starting the 50th Anniversary Anguilla Day Boat Race.

Real Deal and Blue Bird 'Hard Lee'

A 'Hard Lee' is when two boats, on a collision course, avert collision by 'tacking' at the last minute. Boats that collide are disqualified.

This manoeuvre is illegal in other forms of boat racing but, in addition to how the boats are built, it makes Anguilla's boat racing unique. 13

1. 2. 3. COOKED

4.

FUN FACT SALTED COD

Salt fish is a delicacy across the Caribbean region and, if you cook it with Ackee, you have Jamaica's national dish. Interestingly enough, it is not sourced in the Caribbean. Instead, it is typically imported from as far as Canada.

SHREDDED

24

5.

6. 7.

Break fish in pieces and place in saucepan with water. Boil for 10-15 minutes then drain. Taste fish at this point to check salt content. (If at this point it is still too salty repeat step 1) Shred fish with your fingers. Heat oil in a skillet and add onion. Stir in the fish, sweet peppers and hot pepper. Fry for 1 to 2 minutes. Add the tomato, mix well and cook until tomatoes are just soft. Add freshly ground black pepper. Squeeze half lime over mixture.

*Serve with Johnny Cakes or other hearty bread and sliced avocado.

1.

JOHNNY CAKES 4 Cups Flour ¼ Cup Cornmeal 2 Tablespoons Baking Powder 1 Tablespoon Salt ¼ Cup Sugar ¼ Cup Vegetable Oil 1 ½ Cups Water

Sift together flour, cornmeal and baking powder. Mix together with salt and sugar. 2. Make a well in the flour mixture and add vegetable oil then slowly add water. 3. Mix carefully until mixture is not sticky. 4. Knead into a ball until smooth. 5. Cover and let sit for 15 minutes. 6. Roll dough into a long strip and cut into small pieces. 7. Knead each piece into a small ball. 8. On a floured surface, flatten each ball with a rolling pin or your finger tips and palms. 9. Add about 1/3 frying oil into a frying pan or enough oil to cover the bottom of the pan. 10. When oil is hot, add flattened cakes. 11. Fry on one side for 2-3 minutes, turn and continue with other side until both sides are golden brown

FUN FACT Minus the baking powder, these ingredients make up the recipe for making dumplings for soup! Send us your creations in video or photo via Facebook! We'd love to see how you did in making these recipes. 25

Shopping

When shopping in Anguilla, there are two key things that you should know: 1. Major credit/debit cards are accepted (Visa, MasterCard and AMEX) and 2. the only currencies accepted at stores are USD and the local currency, Eastern Caribbean Dollar (XCD). Grocery Shopping • Most supermarkets are open everyday with an exception of those who remain closed on Sundays and public holidays. The general operating hours are from 8 am to 8 pm. • Plastic bags are used for shopping but reusable grocery bags are encouraged. • In grocery stores, prices are usually quoted in XCD. Also, you can become the entertainer of the night at one of the karaoke nights hosted at restaurants and bars. The entertainment does not stop there! During sports seasons, bars turn into sports bars for those who would like to view the games. And, on laid-back nights, you can dine to jazz music or go to a quiet bar.

Be One With Nature

Yellow wild lilies

Fun Fact: The Anguilla National Trust (ANT) offers night-time turtle patrols during nesting season .

It may seem unusual to some seeing a chicken cross the road but, these frequent 'pedestrians' are often accompanied by goats, sheep, cows, donkeys and, sometimes pigs

which all make up part of Anguilla's fauna. Without any major inland bodies of water, Anguilla's wetlands comprise 20+ salt, fresh and brackish ponds that are surrounded by resilient mangroves. These ponds have been a source of economic growth during the days of salt production but now mostly act as a natural habitat for a variety of resident and

migratory birds. Flora and fauna are symbolic in Anguilla's culture; from the bright yellow wild lilies that sprout up after heavy showers (a sign of hope) to the rooster which signals when it is time to wake up (nature's morning alarm clock).

When is Beach Day? Every day! Especially since the weather feels like summertime almost all year round. With 33 alluring beaches, packing beach wear and gear is a prerequisite to visiting Anguilla. Here are some quick tips to enhance your beach trip:

1. A hat and a good read Grab your hat and find a beach chair. Let the sun be your source of light while you read to the soothing sound of the waves in the background. 2. Feet in the sand with a drink in hand Keep hydrated with a cold punch while wiggling your toes in the exfoliating sand.

3. Leave only footprints behind Bring along the willingness to engage in some fun in the sun. Not to forget, a camera to capture and preserve the excitement for family and friends back home. Take precious memories with you, leaving only your footprints behind. 42

On island for only a day? Anchor at a beach, bask in the sunshine, wade and swim in the warm and refreshing water, grab a bite and drink or go para-sailing. Cheers to a day well-spent!

Underwater Adventures

Anguilla has a host of excellent and unique dive sites, many natural and a few man-made. There are 7 marine parks which offer 9 big wreck dives plus 25 logged dives for advanced divers.

The underwater world may be the closest most of us come to the stillness of space and the awe-inspiring sights of a wonderland. Coral reefs not only protect the land from the erosive nature of waves but, are the reason for our white powdery sandy beaches, serve as the home of hundreds of tropical

fish species and the perfect playground for snorkellers. This ecosystem is highly sensitive and it is imperative that we preserve it, as such: • Spear fishing is not permitted for tourists • Don't stand on, touch, or break coral reefs And, always put safety first!

Deep sea fishing Anguilla's exclusive economic zone extends 200 nautical miles to the North. Pelagic fish such as tuna, wahoo and mahi mahi are provided to restaurants "straight out the sea" - hence the freshness! You, too, can bring in "the big one" on a chartered fishing trip! 43

Sports

Volleyball

Basketball

With some of the best beaches in the world, it's only right that beach volleyball is available. Who wouldn't want to make that epic dive on powdery soft sand? It is also played at regional competitions by the National Volleyball Team.

The national team represents the island annually at regional competitions.

Tennis The Anguilla Tennis Academy has been producing skillful tennis players for over 20 years. Some of these players have had the opportunity of receiving scholarships to play & study at universities abroad. It has also welcomed international players to the Anguilla ITF Championships (part of the ITF Caribbean Circuit) for the 2nd year in 2018.

Boat Racing Anguilla's national sport has a big history behind it: filled with passion which you have to see for yourself.

Cycling Dedicated cyclists are seen on the main roads in the early mornings and late 44

There are several outdoor basketball courts on island which, during summer time, host basketball clinics coached by visiting coaches.

afternoons practicing for local and regional competitions.

Gimme Music

“Gimme de music. De sweet, sweet music!” Music… an avenue to escape, a source of entertainment and an integral aspect of Anguillian culture. Emanating from radio stations, restaurants and clubs around the island, the sounds of thought-provoking calypso, lively soca and scratch band music; the relaxing reggae and the sweet steel pan capture the hearts and ears of everyone who appreciates the art form.

representing Musically Anguilla's artistes have been working tirelessly to make their mark internationally. Most recently, reggae artiste, Omari Banks, has been marketing his latest album, "Sunlight" and, Deanna Mussington, the little island girl with powerful, soulful vocals, showcased her talent to viewers around the world at X-Factor UK in 2017. Exuding 'Unity, Strength and Endurance' (the motto of

Anguilla), the music community pitched in, on and off of the stage, to raise funds and bring awareness to the recovery efforts on island after the passage of Hurricane Irma. Their efforts included the organisation of much-needed musical showcases and fundraisers in the UK and US which featured Bankie Banx, NIIK, and members of Birtish Dependency and True Intentions and other local artistes, to name a few.

For the Artsy

Anguilla’s natural landscape provides inspiration for the artists whose work is displayed in the art galleries throughout the island. With every stroke of their paint brushes, the beauty and vibrant colours of Rainbow City are captured. The drift wood is transformed into a workof-art and using only the gradients of black of charcoal, drawings resemble polaroid pictures.

Ang uillian Lang uag e Here's a Crash Course on Anguillian Language: • Fewer words and/or letters the better! • The “v” in certain words may be pronounced using a “b” or “w” sound. For example, Eleben (eleven) and Wex (vex).

• “Uh” is for “I” or “A/An” and “Yuh”/”Ya” is for “You”. “We” used instead of “Us”. • Use “D” instead of “Th” at the beginning of a word. • “Does” does have great importance in Anguillian dialect. It is used to denote actions that are habitual.

Anguilla (ang•gwil•uh) It is believed that during Christopher Columbus’ voyage to the Caribbean, he stumbled upon the island in 1493 and named it for its shape which resembled that of an eel (Anguilla is Italian for eel).

Names of Anguilla The most northerly island in the Caribbean goes by many names. Some because of its shape with historical significance, some as a result its natural composition and nature's phenomenons and others as abbreviated identifiers.

AXA Anguilla is regularly referred to by the Clayton J. Lloyd International Airport's airport code, AXA.

Malliouhana Rainbow City The island with bright, sunny skies is sometimes blessed with heavy showers followed by a (double) rainbow and so, Anguilla was suitably given the nickname, “Rainbow City”.

264

The area code from the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) for Anguilla has been proudly used as a patriotic reference to Anguilla by its locals.

(mal•u•hon•nuh) History has it that the island was discovered & inhabited by Amerindian people who came in small boats from South America. They named the island “Malliouhana” for its arrow(head) shape before being renamed by the Europeans.

The Rock Anguilla’s landscape is distinctively composed of Limestone. The Rock is celebrated in Bankie Banx's famous song entitled “Cherish The Rock”. 51

Health & Safety

Whether on land or at sea, your safety is first priority. Here are a few standard tips for being healthy and safe no matter where you go. Fire Safety • When you hear a fire alarm, drop everything and get out. • Talk with all family members about a fire escape plan and practice the plan twice a year. • If a fire occurs in your home, get out, stay out and call for help. Never go back inside. Source: redcross.org

Boat Safety • Plan your voyage and let others know where you will be and when. • Check sea & weather conditions before leaving port. • Be aware of the location and how to use: lifejackets, liferafts, flares and fire extinguishers. • Be cautious of persons in the water when approaching snorkelling areas and beaches. • Stay a safe distance away from other boats, and diving boats. Source: Department of Fisheries and Marine Resources

Electrical Safety • Electrical appliances should never be used near water. • Any wiring that is frayed or bare should be replaced immediately. • Do not plug too much equipment into surge protectors. • Make sure all electrical outlets are properly grounded. • Extension cords should only be used on a temporary basis. • Plugs on electrical devices should fit snugly into outlets and you should not force a plug to fit into an outlet. Hurricane

Irma

How Strong? Anguilla Strong! On September 6th, 2017, Anguilla was hit by a "Category 5++ Hurricane" - as most Anguillians now refer to Hurricane Irma - which brought gusts of over 200 mph. The damage to the island was extensive and like nothing Anguillians have ever seen before. Worst than Lenny, Lewis and the fabled Hurricane Donna which hit the island over 50 years ago. We now live to tell the tale of Irma.

60

Making a difference

The Recovery In a matter of weeks, businesses were reopening. In 100 days, we had 100% electrical coverage. A testament to the island's resilience. The recovery would not have been possible without the strong sense of duty shown through locals and the international community who pitched in, donated and did whatever they could to help. We cannot deny that the

island was badly battered, but, we can say and show today that we are #AnguillaStrong! Want to know how you can support?
