Anguilla Summer Festival Celebrating 50 years of Beach. Boats. Bachannal.

For five decades, the Anguilla Carnival has been the heartbeat of the island, pulsating with the rhythm of 'Beach. Boats. Bacchanal'. What began as a modest celebration has blossomed into a grand spectacle of culture, unity, and unbridled joy. The roots of Carnival in Anguilla run deep, intertwining with the island's history and weaving a vibrant mosaic of traditions. Each year, the streets come alive with a kaleidoscope of colours, infectious music, and the spirited energy of a people eager to embrace their unique heritage in boat racing. From the high-energy beats of soca and calypso to the dazzling costumes adorning revellers to the grace and regality of the queens and talented teens, Carnival is a sensory feast that captivates locals and visitors alike. As Anguilla commemorates '50 Years of Carnival' in 2024, reflections on the journey reveal not just a festival but a cultural celebration. It's a time to honour the pioneers who laid the foundation, the artistes and musicians who created masterpieces in sound and spectacle, and the generations who have kept the flame of Carnival burning bright. Beyond the festivities, it is a celebration of resilience, community, and the unyielding spirit that defines Anguilla. In this golden milestone, the echoes of Carnival past mingle with the revels of today, promising a future where the celebration continues to evolve, enchant, and enrapture the hearts of all who call Anguilla home or "home away from home" (see pgs. 48-49). Here's to 50 years of Carnival—a legacy of joy, a testament to culture, and an enduring beacon of unity for our island. wwdia.com |

Buy Local Produce Anguilla was abandoned as a prospective location for plantations after several failed attempts due to its dry climate and lack of arable land. Even through this, Anguillians were able to farm and export animals like goats and crops like pigeon peas to Sint Maarten/St. Martin, St. Barths and even to Guadeloupe.

Exploring Anguilla's Limestone Scapes

Anguilla, despite its small size, is home to a hidden world beneath its surface: caves. The formation of these caves is closely tied to Anguilla's geological profile, featuring limestone and coral rock formations.

Its limestone foundation, created over millions of years, has weathered to form intricate cave systems. Rainwater, rich in carbon dioxide, seeps through the porous limestone, dissolving it and creating underground chambers, tunnels, and various cave formations. This geological process has given rise to Anguilla's intriguing cave network. Exploring these caves is an extraordinary activity for visitors seeking an immersive experience in Anguilla's natural wonders. The caves showcase stalactites and stalagmites and sometimes even underground pools. They offer a glimpse into Anguilla's geological history and the forces that shaped its terrain.

46

| wwdia.com

Visitors can embark on guided cave tours, such as Katouche Cave, Cavannaugh Cave and Goat Cave, to safely navigate these subterranean realms. The adventure offers a unique perspective on Anguilla's hidden treasures, providing a blend of education and exploration. Exploring the caves of Anguilla promises an unforgettable experience. Book a tour and let the exploration begin!

"Anguillea" - a large landmass which once connected the islands of Anguilla, St. Martin/St. Maarten, and St. Barthelemy - was home to many of the same species that are still present on the islands today. Some animals that have since gone extinct include the Amblyrhiza inundata, the largest island rodent ever discovered.

From its humble beginnings at the St. Mary's Anglican Church August Monday Bazaar, a day-long spectacle held at Burrowes Park, to its transition to the Landsome Bowl Cultural Centre in 1974, Anguilla's carnival evolved into a vibrant multi-day celebration. Look out for these invasive plants! Invasive plants are those that are not native to Anguilla (introduced on purpose or by accident) and are causing problems to the natural environment, affecting the economy, and/or posing a threat to human health. The Department of Natural Resources – Environment Unit is currently undertaking a project titled “Protecting Anguilla’s biodiversity by building capacity in invasive plant management”, with funding from Darwin Plus (DPLUS125). There are several invasive plants on island, but our current project focuses on these five species:

Brazilian Jasmine

Madagascar Rubbervine

(Jasminum fluminense)

(Cryptostegia madagascariensis)

This woody vine, planted as an ornamental for its sweet-smelling white flowers, has leaves arranged in threes and produces fleshy dark berries with seeds dispersed by birds.

This ornamental vine is prized for its large pink-purple flowers, but is very fast growing and hard to control. Its fluffy parachute-like seeds are spread by wind, water, and animals.

False Puncture Vine (Tribulus cistoides) This fast-growing ground vine has bright yellow flowers, but its seeds have long prickly spines that attach to animals, tires, shoes, and especially bare feet!

Report sightings of these invasive plants. 52

Yerba Porosa (Porophyllum ruderale) This herby plant has blue-green, sometimes purplish, oval leaves with distinctive pores at the margin, hence its name. The seeds resemble dandelions, with parachutes for wind dispersal.

Tropical Bull Nettle (Cnidoscolus urens) This shrub is completely covered in painful stinging spines, from its stems to its seeds. Its white flowers and 5-lobed leaves distinguish it from local relatives Physic nut and Castor. A single touch causes rashes and skin irritation for days, and even the milky sap is allergenic.

Island Facts | Statistics | Important Numbers

Anguilla is the home of the “resilient”! Despite the lingering effects of several severe economic shocks, Anguilla’s economy demonstrated remarkable progress in 2023. The Eastern Caribbean Central Bank projected a 9.61% increase in real GDP for 2023, with further growth of 6.95% predicted for 2024. Anguilla’s economy continues to be primarily driven by tourism services. Nonetheless, there has been an increase in construction activity - attributable to ongoing public infrastructure investments, renovations at hotel plants, and residential developments. Consistent with the decline in global living standards in 2022 and 2023, as costs rose disproportionately to incomes, similar trends have been observed on the local scene. The key factors influencing observed prices in Anguilla were rising costs of commodities, higher oil prices and changes in fiscal policy. These inflationary pressures have led to average consumer prices in September 2023 being 1.2% higher than the same period in 2022 and 9.30% higher than the same period in 2021 and 2022.

A Consumer Protection Unit will commence operations in 2024 with the first priority to implement price control measures on essential goods. In addition to safeguarding consumer interest, the role of this Unit is to maintain market fairness and integrity.

Enhancing access to Anguilla continues to be the primary objective for 2024. It is anticipated that Anguilla’s tourism sector will continue to redeem and surpass its preCOVID-19 levels. The re-imagined Blowing Point Ferry Terminal, Anguilla’s main port of entry, was officially opened in January 2023. This helped to enhance the island’s tourism product and elevate the traveller’s experience.

In 2024, Anguilla will also realise significant development at the Clayton J. Lloyd International Airport. Therefore, the promising future of construction and growing connectivity, facilitated by upgraded air and seaport infrastructure are integral to driving Anguilla’s economic growth in the medium and long term. Notably, Anguilla made history by enacting the Anguilla Utility Token Offering Act, becoming the first jurisdiction to regulate Initial Coin Offerings (ICOs) in 2018. This pioneering move underscores Anguilla's commitment to innovation and regulatory clarity in the rapidly evolving FinTech landscape. As Anguilla continues to adapt to evolving market dynamics, its financial services industry remains a vital pillar of economic growth, innovation, and prosperity.

Effective 5 July 2023, digital asset business conducted in or from within Anguilla is licensed, regulated and supervised by the Anguilla Financial Services Commission (AFSC) as stipulated in the Digital Asset Business Act and Regulations, 2023.

The home of .ai Who would have thought that Anguilla, only 35 square miles, with a population of roughly 15,000 residents, would be making waves on the virtual landscape? Anguilla, mostly known for its white sand beaches and friendly people, with a small economy heavily dependent on tourism, offshore banking and foreign investment, is today contributing to the global discourse on Artificial Intelligence. The emergence of the .ai domain in Anguilla has sparked a unique phenomenon, with the two-letter country code now synonymous not only with Anguilla (AI) but also with "Artificial Intelligence" globally. Much like Tuvalu's success with the .tv domain, Anguilla has become the home of the hottest domain suffix, where the confluence of technology and nomenclature has created a lucrative opportunity.

Online Bill Payments. Two branches and seven ATM locations on island. Card services accessible and accepted worldwide.

The turning point came in November 2022 when ChatGPT became publicly available. Anguilla is now reaping considerable rewards from selling .ai web addresses. With sales bringing approximately US$3 million per month, which accounts for about a third of the Government’s monthly budget. How ironic that an internet country code assigned decades ago, of no particular significance at the time, would today become one of Anguilla’s most lucrative assets.

NB: The cost of a .ai domain is US$140 for every 2 years. This is the same for registering a new domain or renewing.

Investments in the digitalisation of Public Services, particularly at the Inland Revenue Department, are transforming the delivery of public services including tax administration. The benefits include more efficient tax collection processes and a streamlined customer online portal. wwdia.com |

Doing Business in Anguilla Anguilla offers a range of business and investment opportunities, from budding entrepreneurs to world-renowned multinational corporations. Its political stability, favourable corporate tax regime and warm, friendly business culture make it ideal for operating a business in Anguilla. Business Licence and Permits Gather essential documents like Personal Identification, Tax Clearance Certificate, Business Plan, and Proof of Anguillian status. Then, apply for a business licence* with these supporting documents at the Commerce Unit in the Ministry of Economic Development. Non-Anguillians can also own businesses, with additional requirements such as character reference letters and Police Records. It is important to note that specific industries are reserved for local enterprises.

On 30 August 2023, the Licencing of Business (Reserved Industries) Order was enacted. It outlines industries that are reserved for local enterprises. NonAnguillians requiring a licence would therefore have to obtain approval from the Executive Council and pay five (5) times the base annual fee for the licence.

Depending on the nature of the business, additional documentation, permits and licences may also be needed. Upon approval, register your business at the Inland Revenue Department (IRD) and pay applicable fees. Please note that fees vary, and business licences expire annually on 31 December. *Choose a suitable legal structure and register with the Commercial Registry, where necessary. Non-Anguillians, employees and self-employed persons, are required to apply for the relevant work permit. Taxes and Contributions Tax considerations include the Universal Social Levy (USL) and the Goods and Services Tax (GST). The USL, a 6% levy on gross salary, mandates timely remittance. The GST, at 13%, applies to goods and services provided by registered businesses. Businesses must register for GST if meeting or exceeding an annual threshold of EC$350,000. Short-term accommodation providers and auctioneers, regardless of thresholds, must register for GST. Employers and self-employed individuals pay Social Security contributions. The contribution rate is currently at 10.5%. Anguilla's business landscape combines convenience with compliance, offering a promising environment for growth and prosperity.
