28 Dear Readers, In this issue of Whereabouts you will have a chance to read about the commencement of international air connectivity from Bubaneswar to Kuala Lumpur. This is a very significant development in Odisha’s aviation sector. The AirAsia flight not only connects the Indian state to the Southeast Asian counties – which offers an opportunity to promote Odisha in international markets, but also encourage other airlines to focus on this sector. As per the inputs from the industry stakeholders the AirAsia flight has extended Odisha’s reach to the Southeast Asian market but this is the right time to start engaging with other Southeast Asian carriers as well, also the Middle East, European and West bound flights are equally important. Also, to sustain Bhubaneswar Kuala Lumpur flight two-way traffic is required. If Bhubaneswar can get good regional connectivity between the districts, and neighbouring states the load factor will go up.

13th Annual Convention of ATOAI
Adventure Travel: Emerging Pathways The Adventure Tour Operators Association of India (ATOAI) has announced its 13th Annual Convention to be held in Kumarakom at Backwater Ripples Hotel, from September 18-21, 2017. Jai Kishan Kaparwan
A
dventure Travel: Emerging Pathways’ – the theme of the convention will focus on making India as the adventure hub for world travellers. According to the President of ATOAI, Swadesh Kumar, the convention will provide a platform for the key stakeholders of the industry including representatives of the government tourism boards and other players to deliberate upon Adventure Tourism Policy, Responsible Tourism and Capacity Creation. “To celebrate, highlight and deliberate on these new pathways and to give direction to what is increasingly becoming a new movement in travel, the adventure tour operators’ fraternity is getting together at Kumarkom, under the aegis of ATOAI, on an invitation by the Kerala Government, for its 13th Annual Convention,” informed Kumar. According to him the members of the association are excited by the new destination and the buzz it is Swadesh Kumar President creating in the fraternity and ATOAI are enthused by the widening prospects of adventure travel beyond the Himalayan frontiers. ATOAI is ready to lead this movement. “We are encouraging several State governments to showcase to the adventure travel fraternity the unique products they have and also to takeaway from the deliberations the way forward for the adventure travel industry,” he further said. Adventure travel is redefining travelling experience. The niche has not only become mainstream but is now leading it. A sustainable, responsible, eco-friendly world is increasingly gravitating towards the offerings of this genre whose core is now being defined as, being in a natural environment, learnings and meaningful experiences. And what the new adventure traveller is seeking is transformation, expanded worldview, nature & discovery, mental health, learning, connections, fun
and thrills, physical health, unique experiences and meaningful stories. These trends are becoming kind of a new movement and will have its implications on how travel business is going to be conducted in coming years, what will be its ethical underpinnings and how it will not be mere an activity but part of a personal journey and growth. This worldwide movement is also having its effect on adventure travel in India. The adventure travel has twenty odd verticals today from what earlier thought out to be a mere congregation of mountaineers, skiers, trekkers, campers, rafters and Jeep safari. Now from scuba diving to paragliding, motor biking, sky diving, kite surfing, river cruising, angling, bungee jumping, caving, birding, adventure parks etc we have a host of activities to experience. Beyond the Himalaya, products are being created all across the length and breadth of the country. Every destination is creating its own adventure products. Newer adventure products and newer regions offering adventure products are populating the map. These are very interesting times for our industry. These new opportunities have its new set of challenges - safety and sustainability, skilled manpower and right regulatory environment, educating and developing the right perspective for the fraternity. BUSINESS SESSIONS Business sessions will cover policy and taxation issues, marketing, branding, other matters of shared interests, presentations by tourism boards, and inspiring talks by great travellers. ÂÂCreating Creative Partnerships ÂÂStaying on Top of The Wave – Latest and Upcoming Trends, Go Big, Surf High ÂÂMarketing: Digital / Print / Social or All? ÂÂSustainable and Safe Adventures: Recognitions, certifications, Safety Standards, Benchmarks, SOP ÂÂFinding Your Niche/ Specialization: Still Doing ‘One Size Fits All’? EXHIBITION The convention will offer structured opportunities for the travel trade and tourism boards to network for business development. These include networking sessions and a Buyer - Seller Expo where companies may take up table space to promote their products and services.

Despite having a vast potential of tourism especially in Buddhist segment – that can attract a huge chunk of business from Southeast Asian countries, the state was not getting its deserving share. The international air connectivity – including other challenges, has been the major constraint hindering the growth of tourism and its stakeholders. However, after the commencement of AirAsia’s four weekly direct flights from Bhubaneswar to Kuala Lumpur – started operations from 26 April 2017, the state has an opportunity to promote itself in ASEAN and neighbouring countries. This can bring an exceptional growth for Odisha Tourism in a very short span of time. This new route being operated exclusively by AirAsia Berhad will offer

The one-day Bengaluru-Mysuru sightseeing tour is also very popular. But sightseeing tours within Hampi, Badami and Mysuru are not very popular because many people prefer to travel in their own cars. We have reduced the rates for these tours in order to attract more people,” an official said. Content taken from The Hindu web portal

Rivers are neglected in our country because we don’t really have any connections with them. We respect them as mothers but forget this relation while throwing industrial waste, domestic waste and other wastes in them. We have forgot or never remembered to take a walk along the side of the river or swim in them because they are too dirty for it. Water adventure sports like rafting take place in hill stations only where water is fresh but as we come towards the plain-land, Rivers have reduced to a drain as they are used more for commercial than recreational purposes. Chaliyar was earlier a polluted river from the effluents of nearby factory that destroyed the marine life and caused cancer in the local villagers. Chaliyar Action Committee fought for the cause of river with the support of villagers which resulted in the closure of the factory. Since then the river has come a long way to regain its original beauty and now the organisation of program like Kayak for a cause is helping in creating more awareness about the conservation of river. The event is part of India Wales, a major season of artistic collaboration between the two countries to mark the UK-India Year of Culture. Rangoli, or kollam, is an Indian decorative art form traditionally designed and created by women. It is a practice handed down from generation to generation. Mangalam Swaminathan of Indira Gandhi National Centre for Arts and Culture in Delhi, “(Rangoli) it has a vital social function in the maintenance of women’s friendships.” Recently Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced plans to connect all people of India via state subsidised mobile phone contracts. Whilst this is undoubtedly good news for a vast nation with a mixed demographic, as digital connectivity grows, could it diminish the necessity of connecting in a physical space? It is easy to see how this development could also mark another step away from the sense of community space Swaminathan describes.

In addition, the World Bank has advised that the rate of female entrepreneurship is higher in Africa than in any other region of the world. With these strong indications that women entrepreneurs are on the rise, the WTM Africa team has announced the addition of the Women in Travel Meetup to its 2018 programme.
Women in Travel, established officially as a social enterprise in 2017 following years of successful events, aims to leverage the global travel and
tourism industry to provide women with the opportunity to fulfil their economic and individual potential through education, engagement and entrepreneurship. “Our vision is to provide communities in key regions (UK, Middle East, Africa and Latin America) with a sustainable livelihood by enabling women to become economically independent through entrepreneurship and a thriving career in the travel and tourism industry and in so doing, to become a recognised catalyst for women empowerment in the international travel and tourism sector,” says Alessandra Alonso, Founder of Women in Travel. The Women in travel Meetup at WTM Africa 2018 will consist of a half-day programme inclusive of panel debates, group mentoring sessions and the opportunity to network. “WTM Africa has always focused on the upliftment and growth of the travel sector, a powerful and vibrant industry that has long been a popular vocation for women. Combining our extensive network with Women in Travel is a natural progression set to empower female attendees from all over the continent, and we’re excited to add this to our already diverse programme,” says Chardonnay Marchesi, General Manager of African Travel Week.
