Dear Reader, First of all, thanks so very much for all your appreciations and acknowledgement for our January issue. It indeed a pleasure to receive a lot of inspiring feedbacks, and heartening to know that our previous issue was up to your expectation, especially the cover story that featured the magnificent growth of Clarks Inn Group of Hotels. I assured that you can expect even better content in our forthcoming issues of Whereabouts. Furthermore, In February issue you will have a chance to read about the latest events happening across the world – the unfortunate outbreak of Noval Coronavirus is one of them. Apart from this, you read about the feedback to the Union Budget. Though the government has increased the Budget for Tourism & Culture from 2,189.22 crore in the year 2019-2020 to Rs 2,500 crore for the FY 2020-2021, the industry veterans feel that apart from this there are lot of the things that can be done to expedite the growth of tourism and hospitality sector, and demand for relaxation in taxation is one of them. Apart from this you can have other industry updates as well.

Tamil Nadu Tourism sets new world record for largest Bharatanatyam Dance event News Desk
T
he Department of Tourism, Government of Tamil Nadu has set a new World Record for the Largest Bharatanatyam Dance Event. The Department of Tourism brought together 10, 176 Bharatanatyam Dancers from all age groups from across the state to Chennai
to perform the dance on a single stage on February 08, 2020 at S.I.V.E.T College , Gowriwakkam.
has set the grammar for Bharatanatyam, earlier it was known as ‘Chatir Aaatam’ and so the name, Sathir 10000.
The event called – Sathir 10000 brought more lights to the uniqueness of Tamil and Dravidian Lands and highlighted once again the uniqueness of Tamil Nadu, the nature, literature, folklore and culture which is celebrated all over the world. Bharatha Muni
The mother of all classical dances, Bharatanatyam is probably the oldest classical dance known to India. The Hindu Women of South India, especially Tamil Nadu perform this art with precision. The graceful gestures and effortless footwork make Bharatanatyam a beautiful watch. Music, a devoted singer, and the performer’s ardent Guru direct the movement of the artist. Every beautiful movement takes the performer one step closer to God. That is what their eyes convey while embracing the floor with their feet. The Bhava (Emotions and Feelings), Raga (Melody), Thala (Rhythm) make the word Bharatanatyam. In Fact, India is referred to as Bharat and Natyam mean Dance. The Dance of India, indeed. The event was co-sponsored by Madura Travel Service, Cholan Tours and Black Thunder. Content Courtesy: Indian Panorama.

Kerala Tourism’s disabled-friendly project earns UNWTO special mention News Desk
K
erala Tourism’s Barrier-Free Tourism Project won global recognition, as the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) made a special mention of the south Indian state as an ‘Emerging Global Destination’ in the Accessible Destination Awards 2019. At the awards ceremony in Madrid Kerala Tourism Director P Bala Kiran received the conferment from UNWTO Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili. The recognition was for the implementation of the project in the central Kerala district of Thrissur, which thus became India’s only destination to win the honour. The award is instituted by World Tourism Organization and ONCE Foundation that works for people with disabilities. The awards at the Spanish capital were given away as part of FITUR Trade Fair, which is a meeting point of tourism professionals the world over and the second-biggest global gathering of travel and tourism professionals. It was in March last year that Kerala Tourism launched the barrier-free project with the view of making 120 destinations across the state disabled-friendly. Thrissur, also known as the cultural capital of Kerala, is one of the first few destinations in the state to have created necessary
infrastructure in all major destinations. This project, a role model for the entire state, was conceptualized by using funds under ‘Barrier free Tourism’ and the ‘Green Carpet’ Scheme. Kerala Tourism Minister Kadakampally Surendran, hailing the achievement, noted that the state has so far implemented the disabled-friendly project in 80 travel destinations, of which eight are in Thrissur. “We deserve this honour. It will enhance Kerala’s reputation as a global tourist destination,” he added. Kerala Tourism Secretary Rani George said the UNWTO recognition is a result of Kerala’s keenness in meeting the new-age international requirements. “For this, we receive immense support from private players as well,” she noted. Kerala has been the first state to work as per the UNWTO guidelines on making tourist destinations disabled-friendly. Bala Kiran said Kerala Tourism is working towards making all its travel destinations disabled-friendly. “The UNWTO award is an incentive for us to meet the target,” he added. The work in Thrissur district has been completed in the beaches of Azhikode and Snehatheeram, the hill destination of Vilangankunnu and the scenic dams in Poomala and Vazhani. Under the ongoing major development projects, the work is
being implemented in Chavakkad Beach, Peechi and Thumboormoozhi. The facilities include ramps, accessible toilets, lactation rooms, Braille pamphlets, signage, touch-screen kiosks, audio and sign aids, wheelchairs and walking aids. They have been made available in major tourist destinations in the district. Tactile path for the visually-challenged were created for the first time in Kerala in Azhikkode and Snehatheeram, while a wheelchair-accessible sunset viewpoint is the highlight of Vilangankunnu. There is ramp access for boating area in Poomala, while Vazhani became the first accessfriendly in the state. As part of the ongoing project, the famous Thumboormoozhi hanging bridge and viewpoints will soon turn disabled-friendly.

Finance Minister increases budget for Ministry of Tourism, allocates Rs 2,500 crore The total budget allocation for the Ministry of Tourism has been raised from 2,189.22 crore in the year 2019-2020 to Rs 2,500 crore for the FY 2020-2021. News Desk
P
resenting the Budget for the fiscal year 202021, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman (Feb 1, 2020) announced that Rs 2,500 crore has been allocated to the Ministry of Tourism and Rs 3,150 crore for the Ministry of Culture. Previously, the fund for Tourism Ministry had been hiked to Rs 2,189.22 crore in 2019-2020, from Rs 2,150 crore in the 2018-2019 Budget. The allocation for the Culture Ministry had been increased to Rs 3,042.35 crore for 2019-2020, from Rs 2,843.32 crore in 20182019.
While announcing the budget for the year 2020-21 the Finance Minister announced the development of on-site museums at five archaeological sites in the states of Haryana, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Assam and Uttar Pradesh. The on-site museums would be developed at Rakhigarhi in Haryana, Hastinapur in Uttar Pradesh, Sivasagar in Assam, Dholavira in Gujarat and Adichanallur in Tamil Nadu. The Finance Minister also proposed setting up of a Tribal Museum in Jharkhand’s capital Ranchi. The proposal to set up an Indian Institute of Heritage ways through connecting rivers and building 100 more airports to support UDAAN Scheme, is definitely a welcome move for the tourism sector.

e welcome the Govt. of India’s decision to increase the budget for tourism promotion from 575 crores in 2019 to 2500 crores and Rs.3150 crore for the promotion of Culture in place of INR 875.33 crore sanctioned in last year’s budget. The decision to develop five archeological sites (Rakhigarhi in Haryana, Hastinapur in Uttar Pradesh, Sivasagar in Assam, Dholavira in Gujarat and Adichanallur in Tamil Nadu as iconic sites with on-site museums will definitely help the tourism sector. However, there are many other important sites like Sun Temple at Konark, Lord Jagannath Temple at Puri, Dhauli (from where Budhisim spread its wing to the rest of the world), Khandagiri & Udayagiri Jain Caves could have also be considered. Proposal to set up a tribal museum in Ranchi in Jharkhand, an Indus Valley Civilisation maritime museum in Loktak and a Harappan civilisation maritime museum in Ahmedabad are definitely welcome. Odisha already has a Tribal Museum at Bhubaneswar which can be scaled up to international level through the Ministry of Culture jointly with Odisha Govt.
and Conservation under the Ministry of Culture was also announced by the Minister. Sitharaman also said more Tejas Express trains will be started to connect various iconic tourist destinations across the country. Introduced in May 2017, the Tejas-class trains are the country’s first semi-high speed fully air-conditioned trains with modern onboard facilities. Currently, Tejas trains are operational on four routes in the country--Mumbai-Goa, Chennai Egmore-Madurai, New Delhi-Lucknow and MumbaiAhmedabad.
HIGHLIGHTS ÂÂFurther, grant of INR 1.7 lakh crore to the transport infrastructure sector would definitely have positive impact in tourism sector. ÂÂThe proposal for more Tejas Express type trains to connect tourist destination is a good move for boosting the tourism. ÂÂProvision of 12,300 crore for Swachh Bharat Mission and INR 11,500 crore for Jal Jeevan Mission will definitely help in improving the hygienic condition of the country and will give a positive impact to the tourism sector as well. ÂÂForeign Exchange Earnings from tourism sector has grown from 1.75 lakh crore to 1.88 lakh crore (between Jan to Nov 2019) which is indeed very encouraging. But provision of only INR 2500 crores towards promotion of tourism for the FY 20-21 is not sufficient, and we had already brought to the notice of the Union Finance Ministry that INR 9000 crore is being spent by Indians travelling abroad on holidays because
HIGHLIGHTS ÂÂProposed to establish Indian Institute of Heritage and Conservation ÂÂ8 New Museums proposed, 5 Museums set for a major overhaul ÂÂ5 Iconic sites to see Infrastructure development ÂÂ100 more airports to be developed by 2024 to support UDAAN Scheme ÂÂMore Tejas Express trains will be started to connect various iconic tourist destinations across the country
India is lacking infrastructure required for the tourism sector. More good hotels in iconic tourist destinations and domestic tourist locations are not available within the country and do not have sufficient hotels. It was proposed to give incentives upto 3 star category hotels to enable Indian hospitality sector to compete with neighbouring countries to make tourism a major Foreign Exchange Earning source for the country. ÂÂThe decision to project India as a preferred destination for higher study would definitely increase in the promotion of tourism and culture between the countries and bring in more footfalls to the country. ÂÂThe proposal for grant of INR 3000 crore for Skill Development is most welcome as this is lacking and much in demand. Hospitality institutions should benefit and up-skill the skills of the students through various schemes of the Skill Development designed by the Government.
TRADE This year’s budget seems to be expanding on infrastructure and connectivity – two things our industry has been emphasizing on since long. From last year, it appears decision-makers has taken notice of the fact and furthered the focus on expansion with the budget for 2020. New developments in transport, tourism and aviation emphasized in budget such as increasing air fleet twofold will certainly create better connectivity and revenue opportunities for businesses. Other initiatives, for instance, to develop smart cities and build archaeological sites with on-site museums will present more offbeat destination options to modern traveller and will likely impact inbound tourism positively; simultaneously, enhancing the industry’s potential to bring foreign currency and create employment opportunities. We welcome the move to continue advancing infrastructure and expanding connectivity in budget for 2020. Key highlight certainly had been the undertaking to develop 100 new airports by 2024. This move promises grand opportunities for both the country and people – bringing more revenue, increasing the number of inbound travellers, and generating employment in case of former and creating better connectivity while reducing travel time for latter. Expected to be further enhanced by the extension in number of air fleet from 600 to 1,200 by 2024 is a welcome move. By announcing to develop 17 iconic-world-class structures and Sandeep Dwivedi, planning to make India an aviation manufacturing hub, our Finance Minister has left us optimistic about Chief Operating Officer, ITQ the future. To summarize, we are hopeful for the INR 2,500 Crore allocation for tourism industry and look forward to a fruitful year with many positive developments expected to materialise as a result. The budget 2020-2021 has striven to do a bit for the travel and tourism sector. The government leaves no stone unturned to promote India as a travel destination, and this budget witnessed the same. As the Finance Minister announced five archaeological places that will be set up with museum sites Rakhigarhi, Hastinapur, Sivasagar, Dholavira, and Adichanallur and hence allocated Rs 2,500 crore to promote tourism in the country. But, the key takeaway is the government's decision to increase the number of aircraft fleet from the present number of 600 to 1200 by the year 2024 under the UDAN scheme. This will boost the sector, will aid in regional connectivity and enable more passengers to travel at affordable rates, a provision of Rs 3,100 crore has been set aside for Culture Ministry in FY21. It’s a welcoming decision and we look forward to it as the government has recognized the potential of the tourism industry, it’s a big push and this sector needed the infrastructure to be looked at. The overall redevelopment of four railway stations and around 1,1500 trains under the public-private partnership (PPP) model will help to connect iconic tourist destinations. Yogesh Mudras, Managing Director for Informa Markets in India
The government has backed its vision to turn India into one of the world’s top tourism hubs by allocating INR 2,500 crore for promoting tourism in general and setting aside a sum of INR 3100 crore for the Culture Ministry to boost regional tourism. What would be wonderful is to have an empowered nodal body comprising of the Govt / OTA / airline, hotel and other industry representatives with the objective of promoting discoverability, ease of booking and fulfilment of our cultural, natural and heritage sites. Introduction of more Tejas Express type trains and the inauguration of several culturally-significant archaeological sites are other much-needed moves. We also welcome the Hon’ble FM’s proposal to develop 100 more airports as well as the doubling of the airline fleet by 2024. This calls for skilled manpower development in parallel. The aim to double the fleet to 1200 in the next 3 years will certainly accelerate the passenger growth rate. Indroneel Dutt, CFO, Cleartrip
We welcome the government's initiative to allocate Rs 2500 crore for tourism promotion. Being one of the key drivers of growth and the third-largest forex earner for India, this initiative will further create employment growth and strengthen the tourism industry at large. We believe that India is poised for a quantum leap in the space of tourism which will contribute to the GDP growth in the coming years.

India takes precautionary measures to avoid Coronavirus impact News Desk
L
ooking at the biggest threat coming from the outbreak of Coronavirus in Wuhan province of China the government of India is taking various precautionary measures to avoid its impact. The Union Health Ministry of India has asked its people to refrain from travelling to China where the novel Coronavirus has claimed over thousands lives so far. The ministry has issued a travel advisory and also urged people travelling to China to monitor their health closely. As on Feburary 08, over 1000 people have died and 50000 have been infected after the outbreak of the deadly Coronavirus. The Chinese government has sealed off several cities, effectively trapping tens of millions of people, in a bid to contain the spread of the virus. India has also initiated the process of evacuating its citizens. As part of the preparedness, India has also increased the number of airports from seven to 21 where thermal screening of passengers is being done for a possible exposure to the deadly nCoV. These include airports at Gaya, Guwahati, Visakhapatnam, Varanasi, Goa, Bhubaneswar and Lucknow besides the seven designated airports identified earlier. The health ministry also has established four more laboratories apart from the NIV-Pune for testing samples. The four labs for the testing samples have been made functional at Alleppey, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Mumbai. India is also planning to evacuate its nationals, mostly students, stuck in Wuhan, the epicentre of the viral outbreak. Cabinet Secretary Rajiv Gauba had recently reviewed the preparedness to deal with the deadly virus after which the government said India has made a formal request to China for facilitating evacuation of Indians from Wuhan. The Civil Aviation Ministry will make necessary arrangements for evacuation after the approval of Chinese authorities is received. Asserting that there was no confirmed case of the nCoV, Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan had on Tuesday said India was making all efforts to detect and check the spread of the virus even as more than a dozen countries around the world have confirmed cases.
India among countries at ‘high risk’ from virus outbreak As per the number of air travellers that are expected to arrive in the countries from China’s cities worstaffected by the Coronavirus, India features among the top 30 nations that are at a ‘high risk’ for the spread of the virus, a study said. Among the countries that are at a high from the Coronavirus, Thailand is ranked as the country with the highest risk of a virus outbreak, followed by Japan and Hong Kong. On the list compiled by researchers from the University of Southampton in the UK, the United States of America features in the sixth position, Australia is on the10th spot, the UK on 17th and India is placed on the 23rd position.

T
hailand’s government and private sectors nationwide have introduced measurers aimed to keep Thai and foreign visitor safe amid the spread of Coronavirus. To date (Feb 8), there are 32 confirmed infected cases in Thailand and as many as 10 of them safely returned home after their full recover. The remaining patients are well taken care of by the Ministry of Public Health. Throughout Thailand, government and private agencies have actively implemented measures from air to ground to prevent the spread of the Coronavirus and ensure public safety. All Thai airlines have intensified hygienic measures including daily disinfection and cleaning covering ground and air services, cargo as well as meal preparation. Tourist spots nationwide such as shopping malls, hotels, public transportation, tour bus, convention centers and public places have also put maximum effort in their hygiene measures. The ministry of public health also dispatched medical personnel to observe visitor’s health screening and put in place prevention efforts at attractions popular with tourists. Confidence in Thailand as a world class destination for meetings, incentive, conferences, and exhibitions remain as strong as ever and all major events are going ahead as planned. This has been made possible because major venues in Bangkok conduct comprehensive health audits prior to the hosting of events. Authorised hospitals check the venue to ensure compliance with the highest health standards and measures that will safeguard delegates against the novel Coronavirus and enhance confidence in Thailand as a trusted events host. Comprehensive screening, health screening with thermal scans and handheld thermometer is carried out at all airports including Suvarnabhumi, Don Mueand, Chiang Mai, Hat Yai, Phuket, Krabi, Samui, U-Tapao-Rayong-Pattaya and Chiang Rai International airports. The Immigration Police meanwhile, conducts hourly cleanup and provides disinfectant dispensers at every service booth. Both local and international travellers, who travelled to China’s affected areas within the last 14 days and appeared to have a fever with respiratory symptoms (cough, sore throat, a runny nose, or difficulty breathing) will be checked and quarantined if needed.
How to reduce your risk of Coronavirus infection The 2019 novel coronavirus can be prevented using the principles for respiratory disease prevention, i.e., washing hands, wearing masks and avoiding contact with patients who have a respiratory disease. People can still travel to China; however, it is recommended to avoid visiting crowded places and making contact with patients who have respiratory symptoms. If this is unavoidable, people should wear a mask. If anyone has symptoms including coughing, sneezing, panting or a runny nose within 14 days after departing from Wuhan, China, please seek medical care at a hospital immediately and inform the doctor regarding the history of recent travel to China. It is recommended to avoid visiting markets selling carcasses or live animals. If touching or handling live animals, people should wear gloves. Regularly wash hands with water and soap or use alcohol gel. It is also recommended to avoid using your hands to touch your eyes, nose, and mouth. Do not use or share personal items with others (i.e. handkerchief, glasses, and towels) since pathogens causing respiratory disease can be transmitted to other people through secretions. It is recommended to avoid eating uncooked food.

It’s an individual commitment to a group effort that is what makes a team work, a company work, an industry work and a society work. Dr. Velumani was born to a landless farmer in the village of Appanaickenpatti Pudur near Coimbatore district of Tamil Nadu in April 1959. Rearing buffaloes and selling their milk was the only source of income for his family. There were days when the family went without eating food. “That experience taught me patience. It taught me to value the simple treasures of life. I genuinely believe that poverty is a gift. It prepares you for life. It teaches you to be fearless and to survive and sustain on your own. The learnings I received while growing up not only guided me in my personal life but also enabled me to excel professionally,” said Dr. Velumani at the event. After completing his school from the same village, he graduated in B.Sc. at the age of 19. He worked as a shift chemist in a small pharmaceutical company before joining
Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) as a laboratory assistant. During his 14 year long tenure of working with BARC, he completed his Master’s as well as his Doctor's degree, rising to the rank of a scientist. “When I was studying in college, I didn’t even have enough money to pay for my Maths and Chemistry classes. If it wouldn’t have been for a professor of mine who provided for my education then, I wouldn’t have been here delivering this speech,” he said. Today, Dr. Velumani owns and operates Thyrocare, a brand worth over Rs. 3000 crores and is the 149th richest man in India as reported by Businessworld. Under his leadership, Thyrocare has become the largest thyroid testing laboratory with a network of more than 1000 outlets across India, Nepal, Bangladesh and Middle East. When asked what is the best advice he has received in his life? Dr. Velumani promptly replied, “Frugality. It is the most important lesson that I’ve learned. No matter how successful you become, valuing frugality and simplicity is a lifelong balance one must maintain.”

The web-based technologies that give travellers access to the vast quantity of information about their desired destinations, and various kinds of booking tools, are evolving quicker than ever. As the travel technology industry is becoming more traveller-centric, the expectations of today’s travellers are growing continuously too. In today’s scenario ‘One Fits All’ trend have changed completely as the young people, especially the millennials, prefer personalised travel experience instead of joining a group. H
ow do you look at the growth opportunities in 2020 for travel industry (aviation sector) as a whole, and specific to the travel technology providers like you?
“We have denoted 2020 as the year of innovations and our curiosity levels are peeked at the upcoming advancements and modernizations. It is indeed too early to reveal the plans and loose the essence of anticipation. Yet, to give a brief overview..."
Upcoming year promises vast opportunities of evolution, growth and advancement, especially with Artificial Intelligence (AI) and machine learning on the rise. Millennial and Gen-Z travellers are exuberantly looking out for digital experiences, in turn opening avenues for airlines and travel agents to expand their portfolio of offerings and generate more revenue. Speaking of travel technology, we are expecting deeper technology driven interface, both for agents and end consumers. Industry has previously been taking baby steps in this direction and the pace will certainly accelerate with increasing demand from travellers who enjoy planning and transacting from the comfort of their home and desire results tailor-made to their specific requirements. Naturally, this demand has opened avenues for technologically advanced products and services, something that our industry is already in the process of innovating. Year 2020, therefore, is most likely to reveal those gems hidden until now.
Have you noticed any impact of the government policies in the growth (positive or negative) of this sector? Yes, there have been quite a few remarkable initiatives by the Government of India this year including provisions for expansion, especially with new airports in the pipeline further justified by government’s investment

Anil Parashar, President& CEO, ITQ of Rs.300 crore in airport infrastructure till November 2019. Notably, there had been some key investments in and sanctions for schemes such as Swadesh Darshan Scheme. All these initiatives are expected to accelerate air traffic and accommodate the spike in demand, subsequently.
How technology is redefining the travel industry? Could you elaborate on the new trends for the Indian market? New innovations are like everyday news these days; and scenario is no different in our industry. AI and machine learning are two key technologies being fiercely deployed in aviation industry at large, and enabling veterans and new entrants to offer services and products tailor made to the traveller’s needs. With small and big data readily available to major businesses in the industry, feeding
machines with bytes and bytes of data and empowering them to make intelligent decisions is trending modus operandi. More so with consumers’ increasing affinity towards digital experiences.
Any ambitious plans for ITQ to be implemented in the year 2020? We have denoted 2020 as the year of innovations and our curiosity levels are peeked at the upcoming advancements and modernizations. It is indeed too early to reveal the plans and loose the essence of anticipation. Yet, to give a brief overview, we will be treading deeper in the realm of personalization and customization, both for our customers and the end-consumers, and further bringing our expertise in bettering digital experience for travellers through our community of travel agents.

‘Year of Innovations’ T
o start with, how ITQ is catering to the Indian travel agencies? Would you like to throw some light on the latest products of ITQ? Our goal has always been to act in all manners of possibility as a partner and consultant to our travel agents. In doing so, we extend our ability to revolutionize our customers and provide solutions tailored to their requirements. The same reflects in the products we offer; emerging from a deep study of our customer’s pain points, frequent discussions with travel agents, and studying the overall need of the end-consumer- the traveller. Whether it is digitizing the experience for travellers through our travel agents using our product Adhvan or integrating financial interface with GDS through ITQ Financial or easing post-booking journey through VR3, integration to customisation, we are on top of the game; available to innovate and provide solutions with just a call.
From a broader perspective, much is quite the same as the last couple of years. Machine learning, AI and big data are still leading the race, only more voraciously and innovatively. As compared to a smaller portion earlier, a larger chunk is now moving towards personalization courtesy, millennial and Gen-Z’s growing inclination towards

How has been the growth of ITQ in the year 2019? What were the achievements that you would like to share with our readers? Being a part of an industry whose passenger traffic is growing at a double digit CAGR of 12.72% year-on-year (IBEF) from 200618 has its own perks. Naturally, some of it has reflected in ITQ’s growth in 2019 as well; and further enhanced by our ever expanding market share, exclusive partnerships like Air India for instance, and various recognitions and accolades from institutions such as VETA and Tamil Nadu Tourism. But truly it is the initiative, like the one where we encouraged travel agents to transcribe DPNA Special Service Request code while booking travel for the speciallyabled travellers who need in-flight care and attention and make travel easier for them are what I personally consider a significant achievement.
Could you highlight the latest technology trends in the Indian travel industry?
Impressive reduction in time is also witnessed through use of travel technology tools. Perhaps, that is the reason why millennials’ extensively use voice assistant and online check-in. They stand second to Gen-Z when it comes to using mobile for booking travel and deploying post-booking functionalities. No qualms, therefore,

remain when reports state that millennial prefer digital experiences and are quite comfortable with airlines using their private information to provide personalized offers. Could be counted as a reason why almost 4 in every 10 travel brands are inclined to invest in AI in 2020. Millennial preference for comfort is quite evident in a recent report by Travelport where 84% of the surveyed millennial count it a crucial factor whether airlines offer a good digital experience or not. It goes without doubt that millennial and Gen-Z’s inclinations towards technology is going to reel in multi-faceted innovations in the market in this new decade.
Comfort, ease-of-operations and minimum investment of time appear to be the driving force behind majority of millennial choices; and results are mind-blowing. With AI technology in the arena, travel veterans are able to reduce booking time by 90%.

Qatar Airways suspends flights to China due to significant operational challenges News Desk
Q
atar Airways has taken the decision to suspend flights to mainland China from 3 February until further notice due to significant operational challenges caused by entry restrictions imposed by several countries. An ongoing review of operations will be conducted weekly with the intention to reinstate the flights as soon as the restrictions are lifted. As many Qatar Airways crew members have recently travelled to mainland China, these restrictions prevent the airline from scheduling crew on certain routes, limiting our ability to maintain scheduled operations elsewhere. As a result, the airline has no alternative but to unfortunately suspend its flights to mainland China from 3 February. Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive, Akbar Al Baker, said: “We have been placed in a challenging operational situation where the airline cannot continue with its global operations as a result of these restrictions on anyone who has visited China. If we continue operations, the significant numbers of crew who would have travelled to China, would be limited to operate on certain flights, reducing our operational effectiveness. We will immediately resume our operations to China once the governmental restrictions are lifted.”

MALDIVES ROMANTIC SIDE OF LIFE F
or couples, a romantic holiday in the Maldives is a chance to be together in a way that never happens at home. Accommodation on a resort is not just a room, it’s a private love nest designed for the romantic. Villas are secluded in lush vegetation or isolated above a lagoon. The interior décor is soft, muted tones of distinction, the furnishings are impeccable, the bed is large and blissfully comfortable, the bathroom luxurious. Gaze from the veranda to a panoramic view of the lagoon lapping the beach and of coconut palms waving on the shore. Even the breeze seems to whisper romance.
Just as there are resorts more suitable for families with children or for enthusiastic divers, there are also resorts designed for those in love, whether beginning life together, renewing their vows, celebrating a wedding anniversary, commemorating their years of partnership, or simply wanting to get back in touch with each other away from the humdrum of daily life. Such resorts are rich in the privacy and discretion created for couples to be together. The ambiance is dedicated to the romantic side of life. The tropical scenery, the island tranquility, the lack of crowds, the perfect attention to detail and service, the finesse,
the fun and the leisurely life with time to enjoy each other, embrace the essence of perfection.
Wedding Celebration Getting married is one of the most important events in a person’s life. It is an occasion to be remembered and a special way to make the occasion memorable is to have the affirmation of marriage and the wedding celebration in the Maldives. Many resorts have been licensed to perform what are termed Symbolic Weddings. Even a couple that has not undergone a civil ceremony beforehand can celebrate a symbolic marriage in Maldivian resorts. A Symbolic Wedding does not impose any legal constraints as it is a ceremonial commitment by a couple to commemorate their romantic bond. Upon completion of the ceremony the couple will be issued a Symbolic Wedding certificate. A resort will arrange everything and, even with the expense of wedding guests also staying at the resort to witness the ceremony, having a wedding reception at a Maldives resort can cost less than in the couple’s home country. It will certainly be more impressive. The ceremony can be performed in the language of the couple’s choice and be

NTO held anywhere in the resort: on a resort’s sandbank, sailboat, jetty, or in a special pavilion erected on the beach. Some weddings have even been performed underwater. The occasion can be a fusion of local tradition with the couple dressed in Maldivian costumes with local Bodu Beru drummers providing the music, or follow conventional style. No two weddings in the Maldives are alike; how it’s celebrated is up to the couple. The resort management will make all the arrangements including the engagement of a photographer to cover the ceremony, the preparation and presentation of a wedding album or video, the bouquets, an especially themed wedding banquet and wedding cake, and everything else that is required. The couple’s bedroom can be decorated appropriately with flowers, candles and incense to complete the romance of the occasion. Some resorts have special wedding packages that include such memorable happenings as a tree planting ceremony, special mementoes, and accommodation upgrade.
Honeymoon Heven Even if you don’t have your wedding in the Maldives, you can add to the memory of the occasion by honeymooning in one of the most romantic resorts in the world. Many resorts have honeymoon packages, including especially designed and furnished honeymoon suites as well as lots of other goodies such as special massage therapy in the resort’s spa for honeymooning couples. The honeymoon holiday does not have to be immediately after the wedding; some resorts allow special rates and complimentary extras for couples on honeymoon up to six months after the day of the wedding. (The wedding certificate should be provided to
confirm the date.) Resort staff members respect the desire of those on honeymoon to be alone and room service can be arranged for a couple who are happy to stay in their private honeymoon suite without being disturbed, or having to meet other guests. That is one of the joys of holidaying in the Maldives – guests are left alone to do as they please.
Why Honeymoon in the Maldives If you want a honeymoon that’s exclusively yours, the Maldives is ideal. These pictureperfect islands are a real-life desertisland fantasy with accommodation that is secluded and guarantees privacy. Each resort is on its own island; there are no strangers, only caring staff and other guests, who value their privacy too. After being met by your resort representative at the Ibrahim Nasir International Airport and escorted to board a speedboat or seaplane, you feel romance embracing you as you step ashore on a palm fringed island that’s completely away from it all. Crystal clear lagoons, vibrant coral reefs
and white-sand beaches come as standard, while candlelit dinners under starry skies, exclusive upgrades and bespoke experiences-for-two make for an extra special start to married life. The splendour of the accommodation lives up to all you expect on a honeymoon. Elegant overwater villas on columns above the lagoon are especially popular with honeymooners because of their romantic location away from it all. Many come with open-to-the-stars bathrooms, private plunge pools and steps directly down into the lagoon. From the balcony, views stretch to the far horizon as the moon bathes you and your partner
in its seductive glow. After a few days adjusting to your new surroundings, you’ll want to explore the resort, go swimming or snorkelling or diving, or be pampered in the glamorous spa. You could go night fishing, take a sunset champagne cruise, picnic on a sandbank and even be marooned on a desert island for a day. You could go shopping in the islands’ capital, Male’; go underwater in a whale submarine or take a seaplane photo flight. To help preserve the island’s fragile eco systems, you could join in a coral-planting session or plant a commemorative coconut palm tree. So perhaps 10 days is the minimum time for a honeymoon, more if you plan to learn how to dive or undergo a toning programme in the spa.
Where to Stay There’s a resort somewhere in the Maldives to suit you and your partner. If you want the intimacy of private, elegantly designed accommodation with superlative service, or a larger, all-inclusive resort with lots of camaraderie and entertainment, you’ll find it. Many resorts appeal especially to
honeymooners so look for ones that offer privacy as well as fun to make your stay perfect. After all, isn’t a honeymoon the time to fulfill your holiday fantasies and lavish love and generosity on your new spouse?
Weather & Climate Maldives, the sunny side of life is blessed with magical and breathtaking displays of sunshine for the better part of a year. Similar to tropical countries, the Maldives enjoys a dry and wet season. Conveniently, the hot and humid weather is complemented with cooling sea breezes and periodic rain.

ith increased stress on urban infrastructure due to the pressure of mounting population, there has been a systematic encroachment of the citiy’s open spaces that are making way for multi-storey residential commercial structures. Additionally, land grabbing and illegal constructions are taking away the parks and playgrounds meant to offer the much needed space for cultivating sports and leisure activities and games that are vital for the health and wellbeing of the population, irrespective of age. In case of kids, even in playgrounds in schoolsare becoming rare due to lack of space and are being replaced with a concrete paved area which offers a ‘space’ for kids’ activities in a confined and safe enclosures, not necessary offering the benefits or rejuvenation value offered at playgrounds. While kids somehow make up for it with other extracurricular activities, senior citizens and middle-aged professionals seeking an outdoor game to burst stress or seniors looking for an open air walking space, seem to all be at a loss. The advent of a digitally attached set of children, young people with serious life style diseases and seniors with sever movement and digestive disorders, is not a coincidence. Open spaces that offer facilities for sports and leisure activities for all age groups. As a measure to this, private clubs have stepped in to offer a refuge. In the recent years, private clubs have become a sanctuary for leisure and sports activities, offering patrons a clean, safe, and green environment to not only practice sports and leisure games but to also just breathe in fresh air in the outdoors! As a result, private clubs are becoming an increasingly popular family destination that offers open spaces for leisure activities across age groups. Kids who have played in the open in their childhood tend to appreciate nature and become environment friendly adults. Helps improve sensory skills. Kids when playing outside develop better distance vision as their eyes practise to do the same on a regular basis. Most of kids’ learning is sensorial - when playing outside all their senses is used through which they learn about new things which adds to their delight. This helps them use all their senses to the fullest which sharpens the same; as compared to those kids who are glued to devices, they only end up using 2 senses (visual and auditory) which can adversely impact their perceptual abilities. Thus, for metro cities like Mumbai, clubs provide a great opportunity for kids, working millennials, youngsters and others the joy of playing in open spaces and pursuing a sport in a great and safe environment which can lead to them having better quality of life, overall physical and mental wellbeing. Short leisure breaks to drive 38% increase in visitors to KSA by 2024 Underpinning this trend, the data from Colliers revealed that over 21.3 million visitors were estimated to visit the country by 2024. News Desk
V
isitors to Saudi Arabia are predicted to increase 38% from 15.5 million in 2019 to 21.3 million by 2024, according to new research by Colliers International, commissioned by Arabian Travel Market (2020), which takes place at Dubai World Trade Centre from 19-22 April 2020. This increased demand will be driven by an increasing number of GCC residents wishing to visit the kingdom on short city or mini breaks. It will also be bolstered by business travellers extending work trips to explore the Kingdom's expanding tourism offerings or attend one of the many sporting or cultural events. Danielle Curtis, Exhibition Director ME, Arabian Travel Market, said: “As Saudi Arabia continues to reduce its reliance on oil, increasing tourism arrivals is becoming instrumental in the country’s
economic diversification, and at ATM, we are witnessing this growth firsthand, with the total number of exhibitors from the Kingdom increasing45% yearon-year between 2018 and 2019. “With an ambition to increase inbound tourism to 100 million by 2030, Saudi Arabia no longer wants to be viewed as solely a religious destination for the world’s Muslim community, or a corporate destination as one of the richest countries in the world. It has an incredible landscape, with diverse regions and an array of tourism offerings for leisure travellers.” In line with growing tourism numbers, the global hotel industry has gained a renewed interest in Saudi Arabia with a number of international and regional brands looking to expand their presence across the Kingdom. According to the latest data from STR, 79,864 hotel rooms are expected to be added to the Kingdom's existing inventory by 2025, with the majority of rooms (34,270) in Makkah, followed by Jeddah and Riyadh with 14,525 and 11,632 new rooms, respectively.
Hotels in Riyadh witnessed a strong year in 2019, with RevPAR growing 5.2% following a 9.2% increase in occupancy and -3.6% decline in ADR. In Q4, Riyadh's RevPAR reached 529.33 SAR - the highest it has been since 2014. “While, this new supply may place additional competitive pressure on hotels’ performance across the country, the projected growth in visitor numbers over the next four years is expected to continue to boost occupancy levels throughout 2020 and well beyond,” said Curtis. Following the introduction of the new tourist visa, which allows visitors from 49 countries to apply for an e-visa or receive a visa on arrival – the Kingdom has developed a two-phase tourism strategy in line with Vision 2030. Phase one – 2019-2022 – will focus on attracting first-time visitors to discover Saudi Arabia, in particular, its pristine beaches, deserts, mountains and heritage sites such as Dir’iyah as well as its packed calendar of sporting and cultural events. While, phase two – 2022-onwards – will focus on the

full development of giga projects such as NEOM and the Red Sea Project. Turning to outbound tourism, Saudi Arabia’s outbound tourism market is expected to reach over US$ 43 billion by 2025, according to the latest data from Renub Research. While family holidays currently dominate the market, a rising generation Z population, who are heavily influenced by the image of a destination – whether it be gastronomy, adventure, culture or overall unique experiences, are expected to change this trend.

o you want to get soaked in the misty beauty of nature amidst the dense rows of eucalyptus trees and lush green meadows with unprecedented twists and turns on your way through? Then head on to Mannavanur, an exotic off beat destination near Kodaikanal, the Princess of Hill Stations. Kodiakanal, a visual retreat of nature, tucked away in the nestle of Palani hills is a year round destination for adventurers and honeymooners. The hill station which is arguably a terribly tranquil place at a height of 2133mts is loved for its serene beauty and intoxicating aroma. Be it lakes, waterfalls, caves, dense forests, myths and temples, Kodaikanal is home to invariably all of them, hiding in itself several such tourist traps.
Kodaikanal has many interesting locations seen always crowded. Dolphins Nose, Coakers’ Walk, Kodaikanal Lake, Devil’s Kitchen and you have more choices in the list. Mannavanur, a small hamlet, completely lost to mankind, unlike the conventional touristic locations dotted across and around Kodaikanal is where the nature can be experienced as it is! Hit the road to Mannavaur from Kodakanal and your journey will be embraced by mist all through, at times, the moving mist whispers to your cheeks when you stop over for a photograph. Many of the trekking routes in Kodaikanal Mountains pass through Mannavanur. If you have been drawing your own pictures about Mannavanur with a market where people float around, small shops and movie posters, you will be greatly at dismay, as Mannavanur is a location with deafening silence unlike any of the stereotypical clichés present in the hamlets in general. At the very first sight after reaching Mannavanur, you will generally not find anyone, pushing you into ambiguity whether you have reached the right place. Go forward by walk, enjoy the scenery spreading in front of you as a canvas of nature’s paintings, and after a brief distance, you will find people working on the farms or as shepherds. Mannavanur is basically an agrarian hamlet where there will be hardly 500 to 600 families and the major source for economy is farming. The green hills rolling on both sides and the lush green meadows pave way for cultivation of variety of vegetables like potato, broccoli, cauliflower, carrot and beans. The greenery of the village is so rich that blinds our eyes. Walk along the pathways witnessing the waterfalls and small streams, making you feel as if you are somewhere in a wonderland.
