Is tourism thriving or a victim of recent events?
T
here has been a paradigm shift in Government policies across all sectors in the second half of 2019, and that eventually made this period of the year very eventful. Several developments such as reducing GST on hotels, reduction of Visa Fee, improving India’s rank from 142 to 63 in ease of doing business, separating Ladakh from Jammu & Kashmir which opens up new opportunities for the UT to grow in tourism sector, releasing funds of Rs 2,482.07 crore for the development of infrastructure and tourist amenities, opening up new peaks for adventure enthusiast and much more have given tourism industry and its stakeholders a ray of hope to grow faster and get its deserving number of share from national and international fronts.
However, at the other hand there have been several events such as revocation of Article 370 and 35 A in Jammu & Kashmir, implementation of National Register of Citizenship (NRC) in Assam and the recent Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) etc. which attracted a lot of protest from across the country and impacted the activities of tourism and its business in many ways. States like Assam and Jammu and Kashmir have recorded a huge lose in tourism as compare to the same period of 2018. To have a better understanding of the current ground reality and expected growth of tourism in the year 2020 Whereabouts interacted with the industry representatives and the heads of prominent travel companies to know their views. Here we go.
G Kamala Vardhana Rao, Chairperson and Managing Director, ITDC on outlook for Travel & Tourism sector in 2020 “In the year 2019, the Indian tourism and hospitality industry has emerged as one of the key drivers of growth in India. The government has been actively working towards tapping plethora of opportunities available in the sector to actualize its true potential. Several initiatives such as rapid implementation of Swadesh Darshan and PRASHAD schemes, E-Visa for citizens from across 166 countries, coupled with promotional activities has benefited the sector immensely. Pronab Sarkar President IATO
Q. Kindly elaborate on the growth of tourism in the second half of 2019 as it has been very eventful for various reasons? How would you rate it good/ bad? And: The growth though not substantive, but it is positive and that sets the tone for 2020. Key news points flowed in. India secured 34th position on World Economic Forum’s travel and tourism competitiveness Index 2019 registering an improvement of 6 ranks from 2017 Ladakh’s Tourism Policy is on the anvil The GST Council has lowered tax rate on hotel tariffs to make India a more viable tourist destination. The GST on hotel room tariff between Rs 2500 to Rs 7500 has been reduced from 18% to 12% and GST on hotel room tariff above Rs 7500 has been reduced from 28% to 18%. This is good news for inbound MICE, where India has been losing out to neighboring countries. This move is expected to give boost to the tourism industry of the country. With this, the hotel industry has

need to be addressed in their true perspective. The recent reduction in E visa fees and reduction in GST has given a boost to tourism industry to compete with the neighboring countries. We are also hopeful with the effect of new International media campaign by the Ministry of Tourism shall give new boost to grow numbers of International tourists arrivals and we see some bright future for the coming season.
Q. What are your suggestions to the Government or Representative of the Tourism Industry (FAITH, IATO, TAAI, ADTOI etc) to deal with the situation? Ans: My answer to this question is a continuum of Question Number 2. Our suggestions are always in sync with the needs of our industry and to facilitate the stakeholders. The major ones encompass:
New Delhi witnessed a growth of 13% as a MICE destination India ranked 28 in number of meetings and conferences
1. Every association has their own problems and they should deal themselves as per their needs.
Tourist Facilitator Certification Programme to start from 1st week of Jan 2020
2. Faith should deal with problems of the entire common industry needs and take up such issues on the whole.
India’s Buddhist Circuit to have Chinese language signs to attract tourists India climbs to rank 63 from 142 in ease of doing business The Union Cabinet has given its approval to release funds to the tune of Rs 2,482.07 crore fund for the development of infrastructure and tourist amenities under the Swadesh Darshan Scheme project. Out of this, Rs 627.40 crore has been sanctioned for the 10 Swadesh Darshan Scheme Thus the industry is forward-looking with the government of India striving to support this sunrise sector in all its manifestations
Q. How do you look at the remaining season of Inbound Tourism? Ans: Good, however certain impediments
Q. As a industry stakeholder have your company suffered any loss as compare to the previous season, would you like to elaborate on that? Do you have any idea of the estimated loss to the Indian tourism industry? Ans: As far as our company is concerned we were going good till such time the present crisis of CAA and NRC started and with the present circumstances our business is having some cancellations which shall result in negative growth for the current year business. There are always ups and downs in the books of accounts of the members of the industry, like any other sector. The overall scenario has to be one of growth with positivity built in and that’s what matters. The trends of the past indicate a movement northward.
What’s Good The GST Council has lowered tax rate on hotel tariffs to make India a more viable tourist destination. MOT launched 11 itineraries under ‘Gandhi Gramin Circuit India moved up six places to the 34th position in the global Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Report 2019 India climbs to rank 63 from 142 in ease of doing business The reduction of VISA FEE from USD 25 to USD 10 India’s first ‘full-fledged’ global cruise terminal to open in Kochi by February 2020 Union Cabinet has given its approval to release funds to the tune of Rs 2,482.07 crore fund for the development of infrastructure and tourist amenities

Rakesh Bansal Chief Executive Officer Amadeus India
Q. Kindly elaborate on the growth of tourism industry in the second half of 2019 as it has been very eventful for various reasons? How would you rate it good/bad? Ans: According to the latest reports, Indians are travelling more than ever. India moved up six places to the 34th position in the global Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Report 2019 published by the World Economic Forum (WEF) in September 2019. Travel has been strong against the economic slowdown in India, the Tourism industry is one of the fastest growing sectors in
What’s Not Good Considering on the nationwide protest against NRC and CAA seven countries such as The United States, Britain, Russia, Israel, Singapore, Canada and Taiwan have issued travel advisories asking their citizens to either refrain from visiting or to exercise caution when visiting regions embroiled in India's protests. About 200,000 domestic, international tourists cancelled or postponed their trip to the Taj Mahal in the past two weeks. Due to interrupted internet services in J&K and various parts of the country due to nationwide protest against the CAA tourist movement and the tourism business was affected like never before.
14 January 2020
Ans: The measures taken for liberalization, simplification and rationalization of the visa regime in India, along with the introduction of new categories of VISA have already resulted in the India-bound tourism growing faster than the world. Banking on such pro tourism initiatives and the tremendous efforts put in by India in promoting its tourism like Incredible India 2.0" campaign, Regional Connectivity Scheme ‘UDAN’, and the GST rate rationalisation for hotels is an extremely positive development which augurs very well for the tourism industry. Despite the various disturbances due to the new government policies, we are hopeful that the inbound tourism will continue to be on rise in the times to come.
Q. What are your suggestions to the Government or Representative of the Tourism Industry (FAITH, IATO, TAAI, ADTOI etc.) to deal with the situation? Ans: Government has focused on many strategies in the last few years and has welcomed every initiative to promote travel and tourism in country. Focusing on the
online portal to aid tourists coming to India, launch of e-Visa for citizens of 44 countries, Swadesh Darshan Scheme and boosting domestic tourism have been some of its key initiatives in 2019. Prime Minister during his address to nation on Independence Day stressed on domestic tourism, requesting the people to at least visit 15 tourist destinations across the country before 2022. This move will increase the job opportunities for the locals and improve the quality of these destinations, while boosting tourism.
Q. As an industry stakeholder, have your company suffered any loss as compare to the previous season, would you like to elaborate on that? Do you have any idea of the estimated loss to the Indian tourism industry? Ans: We have signed a number of important strategic deals in India in recent months, such as Spice Jet and Vistara. Both Indigo and Go Air also have their IT agreements with Navitaire, an Amadeus company. In addition, Amadeus has strategic partnerships with some of the largest travel sellers in India, such as MakeMyTrip, Goibibo, Yatra, and PayTM; and some of the major hotel groups and aggregators in India such as Oberoi, Taj, ITC Hotels and The Leela Palaces. From an airport IT perspective, Indira Gandhi International Airport and Rajiv Gandhi International Airport also use Amadeus’ leading airport technology.
Assam tourism loses Rs 400 crore revenue collection over anti-CAA protests The tourism industry in Assam is taking a hit right now as violent anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) protests by various oraganisations against the controversial Act continue. According to the state's tourism department, Assam has faced a loss over Rs 400 crore revenue collection during this period. The tourism industry in Assam has been hit by the protests over CAA with many prospective domestic and foreign tourists had cancelled the bookings to visit Assam and other parts of the North Eastern region. December month is the main tourism season of the state tourism sector and all the stakeholders involved in the tourism sector are always eagerly looking forward to this season. The main tourism season of the state starts from the month of November and continues till the month of January. A total of 4,504 foreign tourists had visited Assam during the month of December last year and around 4.25 lakh domestic tourists had visited the state during the period. But this time, due to the ongoing protests and travel advisories by various countries, the number is down by 90% if not more.
IN FOCUS overall numbers to the destination are most certainly down and that has affected companies of all size. Key source markets showed a lot of domestic changes that affected travel to our region. The second half of the year was exceptionally different due to a number of reasons that we all know about. I think the damage will be more to the first quarter of 2020 as forward bookings have been affected. Fortunately most bookings for 2019 stayed, but new ones have slowed down.
Q. How do you look at the remaining season of Inbound Tourism?
Rajeev Kohli Jt Managing Director Creative Travel
Ans: Looks tough. We ace very little that was done as damage control to counter all the bad press we had on pollution and the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) issues. So no doubt about it that the new bookings have slowed down. It will not be a wash out but it will not be a win either.
Q. Kindly elaborate on the growth of tourism industry in the second half of 2019 as it has been very eventful for various reasons?
Q. What are your suggestions to the Government or Representative of the Tourism Industry (FAITH, IATO, TAAI, ADTOI etc) to deal with the situation?
Ans: The 2019 was a challenging year in all aspects for inbound travel in India. The
Ans: Get your heads out of the sand and see what the real state of the industry women safety and now the political situation in the country the image of the country has been tarnished internationally due to which many countries have issued advisories to their citizens against travel to India. It will take a very strong push and an image makeover for things to get better. To add to this, we are among the highest taxed country compared to our immediate rivals and neighbours where tourism is a high priority unlike our country.
Pankaj Nagpal Managing Director Travstarz Global Group
Q. Kindly elaborate on the growth of tourism in the second half of 2019 as it has been very eventful for various reasons? Ans: 2019 has been a very turbulent year across industries for India but specifically the tourism industry. It is going through a rough patch right now despite some good initiatives taken by the government like visa on arrival and e-visa etc. With issues like
Outbound had been growing well but again the government has been putting too many checks in place and that has affected the business badly. I think the government needs to take a re-look at the tourism industry as a whole since it is one of the highest employment generators as well and device strategy to boost the industry. With all due respect to the old guard and veterans of our industry, I think it is time to make way for the young blood to take the lead and engage with the government for the betterment of the business.
Q. How do you look at the remaining season of Inbound Tourism? Ans: At present I do not see any immediate recovery as the government right now seems more into fire fighting mode with the prevailing conditions in the country rather than focusing on the economy or the tourism
is. Everyone is living in a fools world and very little cross sector cooperation or conversation is happening. If we worked as one team, private sector associations and with the government, we can do miracles. Unfortunately, person interests and egos don’t allow that. The industry suffers because of that.
Q. As an industry stakeholder, have your company suffered any loss as compare to the previous season, would you like to elaborate on that? Do you have any idea of the estimated loss to the Indian tourism industry? Ans: Yes, we will probably miss our targets as will everyone else. I don’t know the industry figures, but the damage is there. 2020 will probably be no better than 2019. There are no signs of any dramatic changes in the government’s policies towards tourism nor are there any signs of any recovery in our key source markets that would make me believe that the coming year would be any better than the past. So all we can do is work hard and strive on to at least ourselves do better than we have in the past.
sector. I see a policy paralysis at least for the next few months and the situation going from bad to worse especially for inbound sector.
Q. What are your suggestions to the Government or Representative of the Tourism Industry (FAITH, IATO, TAAI, ADTOI etc) to deal with the situation? Ans: I think a lot of hand holding is required between the tourism bodies and the government and also the tourism bodies need to shed their personal agendas and arrive at a common platform to bring about the problems facing the industry on the forefront and engage with relevant government authorities in rectifying the issues. Like I said earlier, the old guard needs to make way for the younger generation leaders to take over and present a fresh approach in dealing with situations especially with the ever-changing technology and environment.
Q. As a industry stakeholder have your company suffered any loss as compare to the previous season? Ans: I would not say that we have suffered losses but yes, the growth has not been as expected and unfortunately I do not see any revival as well at-least in the immediate future.

IN FOCUS
in corporate tax as well as reduction in GST slabs for hotels. But the recent events across the country have taken some toll on tourism industry and hotel businesses as well. Visitor arrivals have gone down a bit. Currently we are looking at scenario where some of our hotels have seen some drop in business.
Q. How do you look at the remaining season of Inbound Tourism?
Rahul Deb Banerjee Vice President - Operations, Clarks Inn Group of Hotels
Q. Kindly elaborate on the growth of tourism industry in the second half of 2019 as it has been very eventful for various reasons? How would you rate it good/bad? Unfortunately tourism has never been a priority mandate in India despite its immense socio-economic benefits. Take for example foreign tourist arrival in Indian that is expected to grow by an abysmal 3 per cent in 2019, whereas international tourism growth is expected to be in the region of 4 per cent. Thankfully the domestic tourism market is far more resilient. However, we did have some good news for the industry like a healthy reduction
Inbound tourism has grown by a mere 3.2 per cent for the January-November period in 2019 over the same period the previous year, which is far from satisfactory anyway, especially when you look at neighbouring destinations like Thailand, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, who have all recorded double-digit growth. And now looking atthe current scenario, especially around the prevailing events, there would be growth but that would be a marginal growth. If there was hope of any significant growth this season then that has been dashed already.
Q. What are your suggestions to the Government or Representative of the Tourism Industry (FAITH, IATO, TAAI, ADTOI etc) to deal with the situation? The current situation is temporary and market will witness the normalcy return. I am sure government is working in this direction. However what is more important is that for tourism to develop and thrive we, as destination, need to be viewed as safe and secure and clean and not to forget that we can’t be viewed as a country that is
always embroiled in issues or is in news for the wrong reasons. The tourism industry associations need to actively engage on this with both the union as well as the state governments. There is a need to better understand this sector for its socio-economic benefits. Tourism sector worldwide is not only one of the biggest employers but also one of the biggest generators of employment.
Q. As an industry stakeholder have your company suffered any loss as compare to the previous season, would you like to elaborate on that? Do you have any idea of the estimated loss to the Indian tourism industry? Business in Kashmir has come to a halt altogether in the aftermath of the dissolution of Article 370. Our hotel is Srinagar is virtually out of business at the moment. And the protests against CAA and NRC has also affected business in different parts of the country, especially in Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, North East and more recently also at places like Kerala and Goa. We have especially noticed drop in business in holiday locations. We believe that the situation is temporary. We are confident the government understands the scenario and is doing what is necessary. We are hopeful of steady progress in the return of normalcy and businesses back foot.
Jammu and Kashmir witnesses 84% drop in tourist arrivals Only 7,378 tourists visited the Valley after the advisory was lifted, bringing the total number of tourists in the month of October to 9,378.This is a fall of 84% from 59,048 tourists recorded in the same month of 2108, shows data. In 2017, as many as 1,33,220 tourists had visited the Valley in October-the highest in eight years. Between 5 August and 9 October, Kashmir saw a total of 8,404 tourists - a 95% fall from 1,85,057 tourists in the same period last year. Out of the 8,404 tourists, 7,031 were domestic and 1,373 were foreigners. In 2018, the total number of tourists who visited the Valley between 1 August and 31 October was 2,28,905. This year, the figure stood at 24,019 - a large share of this arriving in the first four days of August.

So that the economic benefits reach out to the grass root level,” he added. Former Secretary, Ministry of Tourism, Vinod Zutshi delivered the key note address and suggested that apart from building world class infrastructure, air, rail and road connectivity between all prominent sites across the country is the only key to promote Buddhist Tourism in a big way. He also highlighted that a convention and cultural centre at Bodhgaya is need of the hour. However, he informed that during his tenure as Secretary Tourism, a Convention Centre at Bodhgaya was sanctioned and on October 2018, Chief Minister of Bihar Nitish Kumar launched the work commencement of Rs 145 crore state-of-the-art Mahabodhi Convention Centre. It is being built for 2000 people on a 13 acre plot and is likely to be readied by March 2020. Member of the Organizing Committee cum Vice President of Bodh Gaya Hotel Association, Sudama Kumar said that Buddhism
has not been branded in India till date. “The major pilgrimage center for Buddhists around the world is Bodh Gaya, but it has not been developed at a high level. This is the first time in Bodh Gaya that the initiative is being taken for the development of Buddhist tourism at the non-government level. “The purpose of the event is to draw the attention of the government towards the development of Bodh Gaya because the overall development work of Bodh Gaya is not possible without the cooperation of the government,” he further said. He highlighted that there is a need of movement between Lumbani and Bodh Gaya, This will increase the convenience of tourists and create employment opportunities among themselves. Dr Kaulesh Kumar, Secretary General ABTO delivered the vote of thanks and said that the second edition of the convention has received unprecedented support from the government and private industry stakeholders. He believes that the brain storming sessions will have a lot of discussion around Buddhist tourism and will make the way for further growth of tourism in this sector. nd the story continues.Exactly three years ago, in the January 2017 issue of Whereabouts, we had written extensively about the great strides Clarks Inn Group of Hotels had made, particularly in its meteoric growth as one of the top hotel companies in the country. And what made this growth even more important and talk of the town was the fact that Clarks Inn’s journey from zero to fifty hotels was the fastest compared to other home grown hotel management companies in India. And the beginning of the 2020 comes with another big newsbreak for the hospitality industry once again as the hotel company now boasts of a portfolio of 100 hotels located across 22 states in India and Nepal. Clarks Inn has converted the fifty into a magnificent century. Riding on the high growth trajectory, especially, achieved in the last three years, the company has now set sight to reach an ambitious target of 222 hotel and resort properties by 2022. And the man behind the mission, President & Co-founder of Clarks Inn Group of Hotels, SN Srivastava, ably supported by his boss & CMD, Anoop Kumar, is confident of making it come true.

Journey So Far When you interact with people, especially to know about their success story, most of them talk about the ‘hits’ very passionately. However, while interacting with Srivastava you discover that the journey of Clarks Inn has been a fine combination of many ups and downs, unforeseen challenges and learning and evolving enroute to creating an empire of 100 hotels and making Clarks Inn Group of Hotels one of the biggest home grown hotel management companies in the country today. Srivastava is charming and suave but beneath his docile exterior lies a shrewd hotelier and a man of instinct. He is old
We started with nothing but our conviction and will to create something that not only defines us but also takes the Clarks story to a whole new level. We started without any investment whatsoever, no place to operate from as we had to shift our base from Lucknow to Delhi, no team, no experience of managing others’ properties and not even a hotel management contract.
school but equally adept at adapting, traits that has taken his company that he so passionately speaks about from an industry debutante in 2006 to the ‘Best Hospitality Management Company’ that it was recognized as by none other than ASSOCHAM sometime back. But he doesn’t hesitate to talk about the company’s humble beginning in 2006. “Nothing came easy,” he says, recalling that it was a lot of toil, doubts and discussion with his CMD Mr Kumar and hard work. “We almost non-stop fought for our survival as a hotel company in the initial years. We worked very-very hard to be relevant and useful to our partners. It wasn’t as if the things were presented on a platter. We were exploring any and every avenue to be true to our promises to our owners and partners. We needed to convince the industry that this company is no fly-by-night operator, that we are sincere and serious industry player and that we are here for long haul,” he says. The initial years were in stark contrast with where we see Clarks Inn today. Its journey began in 2006 with almost no infrastructure, manpower and investment. The very entry into the hotel management business happened by chance. Srivastava was associated with brand Clarks for close to 30 years working his way up at North India’s five star hotel Clarks Awadh and was closely associated with Anoop Kumar, one of promoters of Clarks Group of Hotels that operates five luxury hotel properties at Varanasi, Lucknow, Agra, Jaipur and Khajuraho. The duo were keen to chart a course of their own. "We were restless and wanted to explore something more challenging. Mr Kumar and myself were exploring new avenues to venture, but we were not thinking of getting into the business of hotel management for sure. However, when the opportunity presented itself in 2006, we took the plunge. We were approached by the owner of our first property, Clarks Inn Pacific Mall (Also India’s first Mall hotel) to operate their then upcoming property. Initially we were hesitant. We had our share of doubts. But once we said ‘Yes’ we have never looked back whatever be the challenges. We started with nothing but our conviction and will to create something that not only defines us but also takes the Clarks story to a whole new level. We started without any investment whatsoever, no place to operate

The owners and developers are keen to be associated with our brands. This growth would not have come true with one-way effort. Today, not a day passes when owners from some part of the country or other do not visit us in order to know us better. It’s humbling. It is also thanks to their word of mouth appreciation and publicity for us that we were able to add as many as 22 property in 2019. today,” Srivastava says beaming with pride.
Celebrating success; Srivastava with Anup Kumar CMD Clarks Inn Group of Hotels from as we had to shift our base from Lucknow to Delhi, no team, no experience of managing others’ properties and not even a hotel management contract,” he informs. And hence began the journey of Clarks Inn Group of Hotels with its first hotel Clarks Inn Pacific Mall opening doors in 2006. Subsequently, the company signed three more properties over the next year and half in Goa, Gorakhpur and Bengaluru. Though the number was small these properties gave Clarks Inn geographical presence that spanned across North, South, East and West of India. The industry took note. The platform was set. The following years were marked by global financial crisis. If Clarks Inn's presence was barely growing, it didn’t lose heart. Many of the hotel companies folded up, international players exited the market, developers shelved their plan as did hotel companies, forced to stopped development mid-way. Clarks Inn used the period to drive across the message that it is here for long. Apart

from ‘Clarks Inn’ its brand portfolio now also included ‘Clarks Inn Suites’ and ‘Clarks Exotica."The company emerged unscathed. And that paid as there was significant change in the way industry was looking at us now. We were taken more seriously now. We were now being noticed. And the company witnessed an era rapid growth starting 2011 and emerging probably the fastest to clock 50 hotel portfolio over the next few years," says Srivastava. There was another particularly significant change once the company was past 50 hotel portfolio. “We were now being approached instead of being always on the tail. We were able to say ‘no.’ We were able to decide who are serious about forging long term partnership and who are not. At the same time owners and developers were simply fascinated by our business ethics, our brand promises, our commitment to long-term and mutually rewarding partnership and our understanding of hotel business and not to forget that the team, our team, is probably the most accessible and approachable team
The growth of the company from 50 to 100 hotels has been tremendous. “The owners and developers are keen to be associated with our brands. This growth would not have come true with one-way effort. Today, not a day passes when owners from some part of the country or other do not visit us in order to know us better. It’s humbling. It is also thanks to their word of mouth appreciation and publicity for us that we were able to add as many as 22 property in 2019. It is also thanks to their effort on our behalf that we have managed to reach 100 hotel portfolio milestone,” Srivastava says earnestly. “When you have such a large number of hotels around, you are considered more reliable and well settled. And one of the reasons of this phenomenal growth would have been the influence of our well performing hotels and the high level of satisfaction of our investors,” he added further. Sharing an example of brand’s popularity he informs, “We signed a property in Indore in less than an hour of our meeting as the owner was very keen to give us his hotel to manage and operate.” Bangaluru, Varanasi, Pune, Noida, Indore, Mysore, among tens of other destinations that the company has made inroads in in the last few years.
Clarks Inn Group of Hotels
Discussing growth
Next Phase of Growth During my interaction with SNS, he revealed that inspired with the growth that the company has registered, Clarks Inn is readying to achieve a very ambitious target of 222 hotels by 2022. Elaborating more on the ‘Vision 222 by 2022’ he said that when this ambitious plan of more than doubling the portfolio size was discussed with the core team, it turned out to be everybody’s mandate and there was a complete consensus in achieving this target and taking this Group to the next level of growth.
After striking a magnificent centaury in hotels, the Group is poised to hoist its flag on many international soils as well. “The brand is exploring opportunities in Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Thailand, Malaysia, Dubai and also the European market.
After striking a magnificent centaury in hotels, the company is poised to hoist its flag on many international soils as well. SNS shares that things are taking shape for its resounding international foray too. “The brand is exploring opportunities in Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Thailand, Malaysia, Dubai and also the European market. We are poised to have at least five international hotels operational in the year 2020,” he added. Taking a giant leap in this direction, Clarks Inn has opened an office in Netherlands and appointed a development team in London as well. The company has already signed three hotels in Nepal, one operational and the two other are under development. Its hotel in Kathmandu is a top notch property with casino and all luxury facilities. The company is also in touch with prospective owners in Bangladesh and expects to open its first property later this year.
Team Irrepressible To create and efficiently run an empire of 100 hotels, a strong team of dedicated professionals is essential. Starting with just two people, Kumar and Srivastava himself with a small corner desk as office, today the company boasts of 50-member strong team across departments such as operation, training, development, technical, finance
and sales with an office area that is almost 10,000 square feet at Noida and Delhi. Srivastava says that nurturing talent is one of the hallmarks of Carks Inn Group of Hotels. And a very strong element of nurturing talent is that deserving employee be given unique new opportunities to develop and progress to the next level of growth. “In hotel management business our team is the most valuable asset. If you consider your team as your capital and take care of them, your problems and challenges in the day-today business will take care of itself,” he noted. “I feel very blessed that my team (Clarksinnian as they are called) consist of people who have been with the company for a long time. There are people who have been with us since the day one and working with full commitment. Almost 90 percent of our employees have been promoted and given bigger responsibilities as and when required. We have seen minimum attrition at Clarks Inn. It’s not only the people at the top who matter, but also the front line staffs. And we are grooming talents from within who will take key responsibilities tomorrow. It’s our team and their untiring effort that has catapulted Clarks Inn Group of Hotels into a trusted and the fastest growing hospitality company today,” says SNS.

Rapid Fire miss my all-weather friend and philosopher Mr Anoop Kumar, CMD of Clarks Inn Group of Hotels, who has been with me at every step of this turning point and transformational journey and we have walked down this path of transformation together.
Best, and most challenging parts of your job? I live and breathe by our aspirations. And our aspirations is to be the best in the business and taking our Indian ethos of hospitality to every part of the world and create whole new opportunities in far-flung areas of the country. As for the challenging part, we don’t really see anything that we can’t achieve as a team when we set our mind to it. Probably going into markets where no one has dared enter before was a challenge. But we have now been able to bring destinations like Gadag, Hubli, Deoghr, Bareilly, Ara, Buxur, among others, on the hospitality map of India.
Describe yourself? I am a simple person who loves being in the company of family and friends and his irrepressible best-in-the-business team. If I am at home I love to spend my time with my family. I am passionate about my work and driven by my aspirations for the company and love for the family and friends. And I firmly believe that everybody deserves a second chance. Yoga and morning walk keeps me positive and prepares me for the rest of the day. I am not a late night or party person. If not a hospitality professional? Since I have been a law graduate my first love was to become a ‘lawyer’ but life had other plans as responsibility came very early in life. I might have been a practicing advocate in Lucknow. Making a balance in your personal and professional life? I don’t really see it in a very complicated manner. My work requires me to travel extensively and be available all the time. And when I am not travelling I am spending time with my family – my wife, kids and grandchildren and in between taking work related calls as well. My wife has been my greatest piller of strength and the most undrstanding person. There is no problem. I Destination am early to bed early to rise and therefore I Southern Indian, have a healthy friend circle of my own in the London, New York society where I live.
FAV-FIVE
Your journey with Clarks Inn so far ? It’s has been a life-changing experience, to say the least. Unfortunately most of the people never get such opportunities or take advantage of opportunities when it comes knocking. But I never wanted to live in a reactive mode all my life. The journey with Clarks Inn has not only been immensely satisfying but has also been lifetransforming for me. Back in 2006 when we started, we didn’t know that we would be one of the biggest hotel company on the Indian sub-continent. And today, this journey is not only about growing ourselves, but to also bring new opportunities like jobs and all to far-flung corners of our country. And looking at the success that we have achieved so far, it’s been the most humbling experience of my life so far. With power, should come responsibility!
Turning point in your career ? I would say my restlessness about not living life in reactive mode was the trigger. And though getting into the business of managing hotels was nowhere in my mind, but when the opportunity did present itself, I took the plunge never to look back and without any ‘Plan B.’ Failure was just not the option. That was the turning point of my professional career. And I would not like

Also, thankfully, I live close to my office. And that’s a premium considering three-four hours of travel time is not uncommon in a city like Delhi which I save.
Your recent vacation with family? Our country is a Pilgrims paradise. I am a religious man and believe in Karma. So every few month my wife and I, we travel to some place holy and we also take time out to explore the city and surrounding. Most recently we were on the southern sojourn visiting and Rameshwaram, Kochi, Trivandrum, among other places. Any favourite childhood travel memory? Well I looked forward to our visits to my uncle in Varanasi every year. Also we travelled once to South India as tourist and that was a lot of fun as the entire family was visiting.

Airlines in India may shut down if predatory pricing continues: Aviation Minister News Desk
I
n the backdrop of Indian airline companies reporting huge losses in the second quarter of 2019-20, Hardeep Singh Puri, Aviation Minister said that "Some predatory pricing is taking place" in airfares and the government is concerned that if this continues, more airlines will shut down. He, however, ruled out any government plan to regulate fares. “The interesting thing that we have observed is that on Delhi-Mumbai route 20 years ago the average fare was of INR 5,100. Today, the average fare is INR 4,600. Some predatory pricing is taking place. It means people are selling tickets below their cost,” said Puri. “One of our concerns is that if there is predatory pricing, then the airlines will stop functioning. This is not Air India’s problem only. Jet Airways got shut down. Before that, it was Kingfisher airline,” he said. IndiGo and SpiceJet, India’s two biggest airlines, reported INR 1,062 crore and INR 463 crore loss
respectively in the second quarter of 2019-20.
Other airlines have also reported losses in Q2 of this financial year. When asked if the minister thinks that predatory pricing is the reason for ill-health of the airlines, the minister replied, “No, there are many reasons… predatory pricing is one of the factors. But a profitability of an airline is dependent on number of things.” Asked if the trend of predatory pricing has come down after regular discussion with the airlines, he replied. “It is constant battle. An ideal situation from an airline’s point of view is that they grow and they are also able to charge more fares. What fares they charge is their business. Our advice to them is to charge realistic fares,” he added. “It should not be too high. And it is not in your business interests if you are imposing predatory fares,” he said. When asked if the government is planning to regulate fares, the minister replied in the negative. “No regulation. It has to be done
