nder Bhutan's new draft tourism policy, Indians would be charged a Sustainable Development Fee, as well as a Permit Processing Fee. Bhutan’s tourist policy revamp is expected to hit the travel operators in eastern India and across the country who are sending tourist to Bhutan. The latest draft was discussed by Bhutanese Foreign Minister Tandi Dorji with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar in Delhi recently. Bhutan is planning to levy charges on tourists travelling from India, Maldives and Bangladesh. This measure has been taken due to rising influx of tourists in the Land of Thunder Dragon. The new draft tourism policy, which is prepared by Tourism Council of Bhutan (TCB), is said to be finalised by the Bhutanese cabinet in December. Currently, tourists from international destinations pay $250 (Rs 18,000 approx) as a minimum charge per day per person, which includes a $65 a day "Sustainable Development Fee", as well as a $40 visa charge. Whereas tourists from India, Bangladesh and the Maldives don't need

to pay any fees or carry visa. However, under Bhutan's new draft tourism policy, Indians would be charged a Sustainable Development Fee, as well as a permit processing fee. Furthermore, Bhutanese government is also looking forward to stop regional tourists from using low-rent accommodation offered online, as this has led to unregulated guest houses and home stays, including Airbnb, said Director-General of TCB Dorji Dhradhul. In 2018 about 2,74,000 tourists visited Bhutan. Out of which 1,80,000 were alone from India, reported The Hindu.

he newly formed Union Territory – Ladakh is gearing to promote itself as a standalone tourist destination. Before separation Ladakh used to be a part of Jammu and Kashmir and always promoted with the tourism products of the state – which also became a Union Territory now. While speaking to Whereabouts, the Member of Parliament from Ladakh and Chief Executive Councillor of the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council, which administers the Leh district of Ladakh Jamyang Tsering Namgyal said: “Instead of going with any other UT/State’s package, we have ambitious plans to promote Ladakh as a standalone tourism destination. We are aggressively working in this direction and have put all things in place. A team of the experts is already working on the logo and tagline for the tourism to be launched soon.”

According to him, Ladakh is popular as an adventure destination, however apart from this there are host of activities such as Ice-skating, educational tours and bird watching tours etc can be promoted to cater the various kinds of travellers. Suru Valley, Rizong Monastery, Nubra Valley, Shey Marshes, Tsokar Plains, Tsomoriri Lakes, Puga Sumdo Valley and Hemis National Park are some of the major hubs of bird watching. Jamyang informed that after the declaration of Ladakh as a Union Territory, the Union Tourism Minister Prahlad Singh Patel visited Ladakh and interacted with the tourism stakeholders including tour operators, agents and hoteliers to know their expectations and suggestions to promote tourism in Ladakh. The announcement of the opening of the Siachen Glacier for tourist by Defence Minister of India Rajnath Singh could be the giant

leap in the promotion of tourism in Ladakh. Ministry of Tourism has already announced its plans to support tourism in Ladakh through capacity building, creating awareness, supporting bed and breakfast scheme to tide away the shortage of hotels and promoting adventure sports in a big way. However the UT requires much more than this. Largely popular as the adventure destination, Ladakh can offer some other activities such as ice skating, and educational tours to the travellers visiting the state. Ladakh is an ‘Unexplored Paradise’ with a distinct uniqueness, that cannot be found anywhere on this planet. This is the most crowned desert which has an array of natural wonders in the form of mountain passes, monasteries, lucid lakes and valleys. Ladakh is a place where you can script your adventures and soak in the sweeping vistas of powdery snow, barren lands and turquoise lakes.

While further elaborating on the tourism potential of Ladakh Jamyang said: “The new identity has created a lot of excitement among the people of Ladakh especially the tourism professionals. However, as of today, Ladakh is an ‘Unexplored Paradise’, people don’t know as much as the destination deserved. Due to the lack of awareness, one of the finest destinations of the World is yet to be discovered. We are endeavouring to promote the destination in right perspective,

The resort is only a 30-minute seaplane flight away from Male International Airport. Speaking on this development, Gregor Gerlach, CEO and Managing Partner says:

"Whilst the long stretches of beach, crystal clear waters and the abundance of marine life were almost enough to seal to the deal, it was also important that the resort aligned with the Seaside Collections’ brand values.”

“Environmental protection is an important theme at the Seaside Collection and is something we have won awards for. Finolhu is largely self-sufficient and works closely with marine biologists and environmental experts, so it was a good fit for us," said Gerlach.

ndia’s state-run airline will have to cease operations if it is not privatised, Hardeep Singh Puri, Minister of State (Independent Charge) of the Ministry of Civil Aviation, Government of India said in parliament on (Nov 27) in response to a lawmaker’s question on the subject. A group of officials, including India’s Home and Finance Ministers, is finalising the process of inviting bids from the private sector for the lossmaking national carrier. The company has lucrative landing slots in India and across the world, but has been a burden on the exchequer for years. Officials are still deliberating over some details, Puri said. Once they are finalised, the government will invite bids, he said, adding that India

is committed to selling the company. Last year it failed to attract any bidders when it tried to sell a 76% stake in the airline and offload about USD 5.1 billion of Air India’s debt. It is now re-evaluating some of the terms and is open to selling the airline in its entirety, Puri said in a written response to a separate question in Parliament recently. It is also significantly reducing its debt to make it more attractive. One of the biggest hurdles however is its large number of employees, Air India has about 9,400 permanent staff and 4,200 contract workers. Puri said in Parliament that the government is committed to securing a deal that is favourable for the employees. “The government is committed to the strategic disinvestment of Air India,” Puri said in a written

In our pre-election story we at Whereabouts had implored members of TAAI to rise above their personal relation and vote for the candidate they believe can steer TAAI through these difficult times. Mayal and her team’s job is cut out, to lead from the front and revive the ailing grand old party. Since her engagement with the association she never looked back, and during her stint at various positions in TAAI Managing Committee she has been very aggressive and vocal in raising industry concerns. And without a delay – as she contested for the first time for the top job at TAAI, the members of the association well accepted her talent, leadership skills and provided an opportunity from where she can implement her vision and plans for the betterment of the association and its members.
