We have to create an atmosphere of trust with each member: Sanjay Narula
The newly elected Vice President of Travel Agents Association of India (TAAI) Sanjay Narula, Managing Director Apex Travel & Tours comes with host of ideas and dedication to work for the betterment of the association and its members. Developing an effective communication with the government, strengthening relationship with the business partners and working towards greater respect for travel agents and tour operators of the country will be high on agenda. Rajesh Tiwari
Q1. Since you have received an overwhelming support from the members; what are your plans to meet their expectations? Definitely the members have entrusted our team with a responsibility by this overwhelming show of love and support in a very keenly fought election. I am indeed very grateful and take this opportunity very seriously. As a premiere travel association of the country TAAI has a lot to do; for a start – we have to create an atmosphere of trust with each member that whatever we do is in the best interest of our members, and we will work towards greater respect for each and every travel agent/tour operator in this country. We have to collaborate effectively with all stakeholders to make sure that our interests are protected. We are such a large association that our (TAAI) members cover almost 80% of the tourism products distributed in India, and we have to make it count.
is committed to support and educate our members to compete with the challenges. To start with, we have to get complete clarity on the GST (Goods & Service Tax) including several amendments proposed in last few months. The association (TAAI) was in forefront in addressing the issues by conducting presentation by experts in the field for our members to consume the extensive information available and implement it correctly in their offices. Even after six months of GST rollout we are meeting with our members regularly. As we know this is the biggest tax reform in the country and a lot of issues required clarification even today, but the start has been good and the efforts made by us were much appreciated by our members. Secondly, in an attempt to strengthen our relationship with our partners be it airlines, hotels, tourism boards, government, trade fairs organizer etc. we will make sure that they have proper access to our members so that we can give our best or vice versa.
Q2. How do you look at overall growth of travel agents’ fraternity in India?
Q3. What’s your take on the current policies of the Government from travel agents’ perspective?
Travel agents play a very important role in movement of tourist from one place to another. Our (TAAI) members dominate the space as the ticketing agents of airlines and outbound /inbound tour companies in India. So being such an important component of travel and tourism, the travel agents have a host of opportunities and a bright future. However, there are some challenges that need to be addressed. The newly elected Managing Committee of the association
In an attempt to get the proper attention we are very keen to develop an effective connection with the government. We are coming with a strategy to have regular interaction with the officials to present our views and interest in the government policy making. Since we are making all our efforts to get ‘Industry’ recognition for our businesses the association is developing a relevant framework for the same.
8 February 2018
Q4. According to you which are the top challenges (in front of travel agents) that need to be addressed? Our best facilitator i. e. the internet is our boon and bane as well. While it has made our lives and work really easy at one hand, the transparency it offers made difficult to earn our margins at the other hand. The service and cost associated with the interaction that our members offer to the customers need to be recognized and rewarded suitably. We hope we can move forward on that aggressively.
Q5. Would you like to share some ideas that can be introduced to take TAAI to the next level? We have created various Councils to look after each activity which effects our business. The Airlines Council will seek regular interaction and discussion to address our member’s issues. We as office bearers are having an APJC meeting shortly; we are looking at reworking the members default insurance programme. The Allied Services Council will effectively engage to bring better coordination with Ministry of Tourism and all the Foreign Missions to create an effective outreach with the Visa Programme operators such as VFS and the like. We will be reviewing our co-operation and the MoU’s with the various tourism boards and look at increasing our efforts in this space and creating an opportunity of seeking new enhanced bilateral agreements to seek two-way traffic, create destination training programmes etc.

UNION BUDGET
The proposed Union Budget for the FY2018-19 presented on February 01, 2018 was largely focused on agriculture, healthcare, education and infrastructure sector. The experts in travel & hospitality industry feel that except few, largely the proposed budget is not up to the expectation of industry stakeholders. However, there are certain proposals that can give a boost to the industry in general. Here are the feedback what does it mean for travel & tourism industry. WH Desk
Tourism industry demands overlooked says IATO President Pronab Sarkar The tourism sector had pinned their hopes on the budget in anticipation of certain key measures such as Export Status to tourism industry and some reliefs on tourism and hospitality sector. “However against expectations, nothing has been mentioned about this in the budget and industry was left with GST issues to continue. After the implementation of GST with effect from 1st of July 2017, tourism has been taxed heavily due to multiple taxes on the services,” said Pronab Sarkar President, Indian Association of Tour Operators (IATO). He further opines, “We have been pleading with the government that our taxes are much higher than our neighbouring countries and we need to be at par to compete Pronab Sarkar in the International market to President attract more foreign tourists to our IATO country and to earn much wanted foreign exchange and to create more employment, tourism industry needs to be boosted by giving Export industry status to tourism industry and keep tourism services which earn foreign exchange from out of GST/ IGST. However this demand has not been met.” The IATO President also mentioned that on the positive side, emphasis on infrastructure development has been announced by the Hon’ble Finance Minister, which will have very positive impact on tourism growth such as: Develop ten prominent tourist sites into Iconic tourism destinations by following a holistic approach involving infrastructure and skill development, development of

technology, attracting private investment, branding and marketing. Tourist amenities at 100 Adarsh monuments of the Archaeological Survey of India will be upgraded to enhance visitor experience. Redevelopment of 600 major railway stations, all stations with more than 25000 footfalls will have escalators. All railway stations and trains will be progressively provided with wi-fi. CCTVs will be provided at all stations and on trains to enhance security of passengers with Modern trainsets with state-of-the-art amenities and features. Under Regional connectivity scheme of UDAN initiated by the Government, shall connect 56 unserved airports and 31 unserved helipads across the country. Airport Authority of India (AAI) has 124 airports government will expand airport capacity more than five times to handle a billion trips a year under a new initiative - NABH Nirman. Development of 99 smart cities. Development of 5 lakh hotspots in rural areas. Government has already initiated in current year, ropeways to promote tourism, logistics parks and expanded the scope of railways infrastructure to include development of commercial land around railway stations. Besides, government has also announced to extend benefit of the reduced corporate tax of 25% for companies with turnover of up-to Rs. 250 crore from Rs. 50 crore earlier, which will boost small and medium companies, added Pronab Sarkar.
Union Budget stood for entrepreneurship, employment and quality of life “This year’s Union Budget stood for entrepreneurship, employment and quality of life. The announcements made will benefit MSMEs, including small hotels,” says Ritesh Agarwal, Founder & CEO, OYO. “The reduction of corporate tax is a welcome move but we are hoping the limit to be pegged higher than INR 250 crore so as to benefit more corporate entities. We appreciate the measures taken by the government to keep the alarming pollution levels in control. This is a major step towards ensuring the quality of life for citizens,” he further said. He opines that “The Mudra Loan allocation of INR 3 lakh crore will help in enabling SMEs to generate more jobs while creating thousands of new entrepreneurs too. One major change which we were expecting was GST being levied on the actual
IN FOCUS price rather than the declared tariff for hotel accommodation. We’ll continue to engage with the government to make this happen which will leave no room for litigation and benefit the hospitality industry.” “At OYO, we have a network of over 3500 exclusively controlled hotels in the MSME sector and we believe that the budget presented Ritesh Agarwal today will facilitate the growth of Founder & CEO our partners. The government’s OYO decision of developing 10 model destinations across India and investing in strengthening the country’s airport network and infrastructure will boost the tourism sector,” added Agarwal.
Proposed cut in corporate income tax will help SMEs “The measures of the Union Budget 2018 holds out quite a lot for the T&T industry and is expected to, on the whole, boost the sector. Looking at developing and marketing untapped tourist spots is always advisable in a saturated and competitive market. That the Budget proposes to develop 10 sites as iconic tourist destinations and upgrade monuments under the Archeological Survey of India is extremely encouraging,” says Yogesh Mudras, Managing Director, UBM India, “The Budget seeks to improve what India is already gifted with. Measures such as raising the airport capacity by 5 times under the UDAN scheme, improving rail networks in Mumbai and Bengaluru, addressing the critical air pollution situation in Delhi/NCR will increase India’s attractiveness to tourists within India & abroad.” “Significantly, the Budget has proposed to cut the corporate income tax rate to 25 percent for companies with a turnover of upto Rs 250 crore. This would help plenty of SMEs that are aspiring to make a different in the T&T market. “It is good to sometimes cleanse the system and structure from within and make optimal use of available resources The Union Budget feels this is required for the sector. Travel in India is destined to boom and the Budget has shown us the roadmap.”
Plan to increase airport capacity will augur well for mid-segment hotels Though there is no direct mention of hospitality sector in the proposed Union Budget, however, various measures to enhance disposable income and the government’s plan to increase the airport capacity to handle one billion trips a year will augur well for mid-segment hotels, says Chander Baljee, Managing Director of Royal Orchid Hotels.
Chander Baljee Managing Director Royal Orchid Hotels
Monuments under the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) under the National Heritage City Augmentation scheme of the government will help develop properties in these destinations by keeping their heritage in mind. “We at Royal Orchid Hotels have started expanding our properties to Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities. Increased investment in infrastructure will help boost travel among the masses thus increasing the business for hospitality and tourism sector,” he added.
Proposed 10 prominent tourist destinations as iconic retreats is much needed The proposal to develop 10 prominent tourist destinations as iconic retreats is much needed to revive tourist interest, generate revenue and also create more job opportunities locally. Along with this provision for railways and airlines to modernize stations and expand capacity is the need of the hour if we are to attract more tourists and develop India as a tourism powerhouse to showcase our rich heritage to the world,” says Aloke Bajpai, Co-founder & CEO, Ixigo. “Safety has been a major concern for railways over the last 1 year. We are happy to see the government sharpen its focus on the same. Renewal of railway tracks to broad gauge is the need of the hour and hopefully, the government will meet its target of 36,000 km in the upcoming year. Digital connectivity at railway stations will allow for better access to passenger amenities and more opportunities for businesses. This creates immense opportunities for players like us and also for telcos, content providers and others.” “In order to match with world class infrastructure, station renovation is a must, this will help handle the bustling railway traffic. With the highest ever capital expenditure of Rs 1.48 lakh crore being allocated to the Indian Railways, we believe the government is moving in the right direction,” he added.
According to him, “The conversion of ten prominent tourist destinations as iconic and model destinations will boost the hospitality and tourism sector in India. The scheme to magnify the visitor experience at 110 Model

We had a soft launch the previous year and majority of bookings were coming from them, but just a soft launch of B2C has doubled the numbers.” “The intention of launching a B2C campaign is just to create awareness about the brand and its product line which can be booked directly or through a travel agent as well. There is a very healthy commission structure for the travel agents. In B2C we are trying to build a brand,” added Kohli. Speaking on the same lines Evon says, ”Our GSA – Signature Tours is doing a commendable job in this market. To strengthen our engagement with the agents our GSA team is playing a very crucial role by conducting a lot of events and training programs for our agents. We see a huge potential in B2C segment that’s why we have a consumer lunch of our product.”

Gokul is the hideout where Lord Krishna was secretly brought up – away from the eyes of his maternal uncle Kansa. His consort Radha belonged to Barsana, where the unique Holi festival (Latthamar Holi) is celebrated with great gusto. At Goverdhan, Krishna raised a mighty mountain on his little finger to protect the locals from the wrath of rain-God Indra.

Varanasi is believed to be the greatest Tirth (pilgrimage) between earth and heaven. For a Hindu, to visit Varanasi and bathe in the water of Ganga, is to be cleansed of the sins of thousands of past rebirths. Banaras Hindu University (B.H.U) founded by Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya in 1917A.D is the largest residential University in India. At the entrance, there is the grand statue of its founder and the Vishwanath temple in its centre. The huge temple was built in 1966, under patronage of the Birlas. It has a 677 meter high rising white top, and its well carved architecture attracts pilgrims.
SARNATH Sarnath, 10km from Varanasi, is one of the most revered Buddhist pilgrimage centers. It is believed that after attaining the Enlightenment at Bodh Gaya, it was here that Lord Buddha preached his first sermon, sanctified as Maha Dharm Chakra Parivartan. The great Dhamekh Stupa and several other structures stand testimony to the importance the place enjoyed at that time.

Dhamek Stupa at Sarnath The Chaukhandi Stupa is the place where, during his first visit to Sarnath, Lord Buddha met his first five disciples. The area is a treasure trove of archaeological findings such as Dharmrajika Stupa and Mulgandhkuti Vihar. The smooth glistening pillar established by Emperor Ashoka in 273-232 B.C. marks the foundation of the Buddhist Sangha, and the Lion Capital atop this pillar is now India’s National Emblem.
AYODHYA Ayodhya also known as Saketa, is an ancient city of India, believed to be the birthplace of Rama and setting of the epic Ramayana. Ayodhya used to be the capital of the ancient Kosala Kingdom. It has an average elevation of 93 meters (305 feet). Owing to the belief as the birthplace of Rama, Ayodhya has been regarded as one of the seven most important pilgrimage sites for Hindus. It is believed that the birth spot of Rama was marked by a temple, which was demolished by the orders of the Mughal emperor Babur and a mosque erected in its place. Ayodhya is perhaps the most noted place in the northern India where parikramas are undertaken by Hindu Pilgrims. These are circumambulations of important religious places and are of varying duration, shortest being the Antargrahi Parikrama which has to be completed within a day. After taking a dip in the Saryu river, the devotee commences the parikarma
from the Nageshwarnath temple and passes through Rama Ghat, Sita Kund, Maniparvata and Brahma Kund, finally terminating at Kanak Bhawan. Then there is the Panchkoshi Parikrama circuit of 10 miles, which touches Chakratirtha, Nayaghat, Ramghat, Saryubagh, Holkar-ka-pura, Dashrathkund, Jogiana, Ranopali, Jalpa Nala and Mahtabagh. On the way the people pay homage to deities in the shrines which are situated on the route.
VINDHYACHAL Situated on the bank of the Ganga near Mirzapur amid the Vindhya hills it is a sacred pilgrimage site. The Shaktipeeth of goddess Vindhyavasini is supposed to be the abode of divine power and blessings. There are several highly revered temples in the vicinity such as Ashtabhuja Maa Temple and Goddess Kalikhoh Temple that attract a stream of visitors throughout the year. Last year, Saudi Arabia set the stage for this to expand to leisure tourism, as it pursues targets of 30 million visitors annually by 2030. As a result, 2018 will see the first tourism visas granted to international travellers and, for the first time, women aged 25 and older will now be able to obtain a single entry, 30-day tourist visa without a male chaperone.
Commenting on the findings of the report, Simon Press, Senior Exhibition Director, Arabian Travel Market (ATM), which takes place at the Dubai World Trade Centre from April 22-25, said: “Following recent reforms and the relaxation of visa regulations, Saudi Arabia is poised to capitalise on these factors as it nurtures a vibrant leisure and entertainment sector, supported by a new generation of hotels.”
The kingdom has announced a series of leisure projects in recent months, including the creation of a Six Flags theme park in Riyadh by 2021 and a Red Sea resort built on 100 miles of sandy coastline and backed by investment from Virgin Group founder Sir Richard Branson. Featuring hotels, residences and a transport hub, the project will create 35,000 jobs, adding SAR15 billion to the economy.
The study produced by ATM’s research partner Colliers, found that religious tourism in the kingdom is still driving demand, with 30,000 rooms opened during 2017, with a further 40,020 guestrooms in 89 projects currently under construction –
Aligned with the vision, the Public Investment Fund (PIF) ploughed SAR10 billion into entertainment ventures in 2017 and, under the National Transformation Programme (NTP) the kingdom has invested SAR171.5 billion in tourism development.
