Madaba The city of Mosaics NTO

Dear Readers, The Union Minister of Finance has presented the proposed Union Budget for 2017-18 which has been termed as the well balanced and pro-growth centric in general; whereas the stakeholders of tourism, hospitality and aviation industry don’t find much to talk about. Definitely there are some positive announcements such as Incredible India 2.0 campaign, setting up Five Special Tourism Zones and Listing of IRCTC etc. but increased service tax is point of concern for the professionals. Not only this, several existing benefits were reduced (like abatement from 70% to 40%) this year. However the reduction in corporate taxes for MSME segment (turnover up to five crore) is a positive step as most of the travel companies falls in this category. Another positive announcement for this industry was Public Endorsement of Tourism as a sector of economic importance with high employment potential and economic multiplier effect. It will be a powerful motivation to the most state governments that will enable them to impart higher importance to tourism while formulating their state Budgets. PATA and Microsoft collaboration paves way for digital transformation

T

he Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) has announced a collaboration with Microsoft that is designed to improve tourism data collection and develop advanced analytics that help travel industry operators better serve their customers.

Experts from PATA and Microsoft will work together to upgrade the PATAmPOWER online data platform that gives members a broad range of timely insights into the Asia Pacific visitor economy.

Dr. Mario Hardy CEO PATA

This collaboration benefits all 850-plus PATA members including government, state and city tourism bodies, international airlines, airports and cruise lines, educational institutions and travel industry companies in 101 countries.

PATA CEO Dr. Mario Hardy said: “With this collaboration our goal is to produce even better data more quickly to our members in both graphic and tabular formats. The challenge with visitor data is that it is often one

dimensional and pulled from a limited number of sources that may render analysis difficult and misleading. “We will also work together on mechanisms for data fusion and linkage, geo-tagging for PATA member attractions, and analysis of travellers’ data through credit card expenditure and social media feeds. This will ensure data is pulled and analysed from various visitor touch points so that PATA members are privy to complete visitor information. This enables our broadly-based membership to plan more effectively the promotions and campaigns that target different consumer groups,” he added. Erick Stephens, Chief Technology Officer, Microsoft Public Sector Asia, said, “We are pleased to collaborate with PATA to enable its members to transform the way they engage with travellers and capture, through data, the business opportunities of tomorrow. Building better, stronger engagements by harnessing data for a complete view of customers and drawing actionable intelligence, predictive insights that can deliver personalisation at scale have become crucial for the business of today.”

Union Budget

What Does It Mean for Tourism, Hospitality & Aviation Industry?

The Union Budget 2017-18 has been termed as a well balanced, pro-poor, pro-growth centric in general, but what does it mean for the Tourism, Hospitality and Aviation industry that’s a little different. In an attempt to understand the impact of this Budget on the growth of the entire fraternity we interacted with the industry experts and representative associations. Here are the excerpts. Rajesh Tiwari

E

ven after the announcements of Incredible India 2.0 Campaign, setting up Five Special Tourism Zones, Listing of IRCTC and starting more Pilgrimage and Tourist trains etc. the Budget will have very little to offer to the tourism industry. According to the Federation of Associations in Indian Tourism & Hospitality (FAITH) in the immediate term, there will be a negative impact due to the service tax increase on outbound tour operators and procedural bottlenecks to domestic tour operators. In the long run, if the 5 mega zones get developed it will create large scale new tourism supply stimulating the complete market. The enhanced spending on domestic and international markets should stimulate additional traffic. “One more year; one more budget, but very little to boost tourism,” says Rajeev Kohli, Sr Vice President, Indian Association of Tour Operators (IATO). A Very Dry Budget for Tourism Says IATO President “We expected that government will T take steps at tackling he Tourism Industry had good expectations from this year’s budget in the form of sops and incentives to open up huge investment opportunities and viable business avenues. However, according to the President of IATO, Pronab Sarkar, it has been a very dry Budget as far as the tourism industry is concerned. “We expected that government will take steps at tackling inflation. Also Service tax on tourism sector will be brought down to make India holiday’s packages competitive. As tourism and hospitality industry, we found it a very ‘Dry Affair’ as budget has nothing special to offer to the tourism industry,” said IATO President. “We had submitted an extensive wish list to boost the country’s tourism revenue and employment through tourism which are major objectives of the government as also the budget for 2017-18. Even some of the benefits given to us earlier, have been withdrawn. We had 70% abatement which is reduced to 40% and earlier it was 30% taxable value and now it is 60% and earlier it was taxed 4.5% on package and now it is double,” informed Sarkar. While elaborating on the proposed service tax he said: “We expected Service tax exemption against foreign exchange earnings which would have given real boost to tourism. This increase will make our destination more expensive as the tax will impact all components of travel and hospitality. We may lose our business to our neighboring countries which are much cheaper than India.” According to him, the Service Tax should have been waived off for tourism sector as tourism is the largest contributor of Foreign Exchange and employment. It contributes 6% to GDP and nearly 8% to total employment in India. However, Union Budget through commitment of high allocation to social, Agro, Rural Sector and Infrastructure ensures that India’s consumption led growth story remains intact. In addition government plans to introduce higher allocation to the Flagship programmes such as MGNREGA etc which accounts of Rs 48,000 crores of

WHEREABOUTS

Madaba The city of Mosaics Madaba, the City of Mosaics, located in Central Jordan is best known for its spectacular Byzantine and Umayyad mosaics, and is home to the famous 6th century mosaic map of Jerusalem and the Holy Land. With two million pieces of coloured stone, the map depicts hills and valleys, villages and towns as far as the Nile Delta. Whereabouts brings more on this fascinating destination. Compiled by WH Desk

T

he Madaba Mosaic Map covers the floor of the Greek Orthodox Church of St. George. The church was built in 1896 AD, over the remains of a much earlier 6th century Byzantine church. The mosaic panel enclosing the Map was originally around 15.6 X 6m, 94sqm only about a quarter of which is preserved.

In line with Jordan’s commitment to restoring and preserving its mosaic masterpieces, Madaba’s extensive Archaeological Park and Museum complex encompasses the remains of several Byzantine churches, including the outstanding mosaics of the Church of the Virgin and the Hyppolytus Hall, part of a 6th century mansion. Other mosaic masterpieces found in the Church of the Virgin and the Apostles and the Archaeological Museum, depict

Madaba Mosaic

A close look

Mosaic sites are found surrounding Madaba at Ma’in, Hesban, Siyagha, Mukhayyat, Masuh, Mukawir, Nitel, Jamil, and, most importantly, at Umm Ar-Rasas (ancient Kastron Mefaa) with its fourteen churches, most of which date to the 5th and 6th centuries AD. The most famous, however, is the Church of St. Stephen dated to the Abbasid period (8th century AD).

a rampant profusion of flowers and plants, birds and fish, animals and exotic beasts, as well as scenes from mythology and everyday pursuits of hunting, fishing and farming. Literally, hundreds of other mosaics from the 5th through the 7th centuries are scattered throughout Madaba’s churches and homes. Close to the Church of the Virgin is the Madaba Institute for Mosaic Art and Restoration, which operates under the patronage of the Ministry of Tourism. The only project of its kind in the Middle East, the Institute trains artisans in the art of making, repairing and restoring mosaics. Several neighboring houses built on Byzantine mosaic floors in Madaba were purchased by the Department of Antiquities to form the core of a museum for the city. The site was opened in 1987. A number of mosaics from Hesban, Ma’in Qastal, and Mount Nebo are on display in the open courtyard of the museum, along with a collection of lonian and Corinthian capitals, and a number of Byzantine collonettes and altars. The museum also houses several collections of pottery, glass from Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine, and Islamic periods. An important collection of Islamic pottery and bronze vessels found inside a room of the Umm Al-Walid was conserved at the Institute of Conservation in Geneva and is now on display in Madaba. There is also a collection of silver Ptolemaic coins from Muraba’ at Musa and a collection of gold Umayyad dinars.

To the east of Madaba is Umm Ar-Rasas, a very ancient site that is mentioned in both the Old and New Testaments of the Bible. The rectangular walled city is mostly in ruins but does still include several buildings, as well as four churches and some beautiful stone arches. The main attraction is outside the city walls within the Church of St. Stephen, which contains a very large, perfectly preserved mosaic floor laid down in 718 AD. It portrays fifteen major cities of the Holy Land from both east and west of the River Jordan. This magnificent mosaic is second only to Madaba’s world famous mosaic map of Jerusalem and the Holy Land. WEATHER Jordan boasts almost year-round sunshine with temperate, comfortable weather. Spring and autumn are fresh and crisp with rain being more common in the spring. The long summer days are sunny with cool evenings perfect for rooftop sunsets and outdoor activities. Wintertime can be cold in the desert, but is pleasantly moderate in most of the country. LANGUAGE The official language of Jordan is Arabic, but English is widely spoken especially in the cities. Many Jordanians have travelled, or have been educated abroad, so French, German, Italian and Spanish are also spoken, but to a lesser extent. CURRENCY The local currency is the Jordanian Dinar; symbol JD, also pronounced as ‘Jaydee’. There are 1, 5, 10, 20 and 50 JD notes. The dinar is divided into 100 piasters (pronounced ‘pee-asters’) of 1000 fils. The fils is the unit most commonly used and you will usually see prices written as 4,750 (which is 4 JD and 750 fils).

However, that does not mean pure industry does not have any demand or need for a five star segment. The Indian clientele is very aspiring. We are committed to give value and build a loyal customer base gradually, he added. The 124 room hotel was built at a cost of Rs 175 crores. The entire project was built in three years.

ast year, continuing the momentum gained in 2015 following its comprehensive global rebranding initiative, the company generated $1.11 billion in reservations revenue on behalf of its member properties worldwide, welcomed 82 new properties, and enriched its points-based iPrefer hotel rewards programme. “Our move to one global brand allowed us to be more nimble and presented fresh, exciting opportunities, so we set out for 2016 with intentions to thoughtfully grow our brand presence and innovate in the areas that would help us most effectively connect our member hotels with their ideal guest,” said President & CEO Lindsey Ueberroth. “Our team’s focus last year not only helped us execute on these goals but also created a strong pipeline to generate immediate results in 2017, which will be a pivotal year as we approach our 50th anniversary,” she added. A major driver behind the success Preferred Hotels & Resorts achieved was iPrefer, which was revised in February 2016 to feature a simplified two-tier structure and enhanced benefits. This strategic revision fueled stronger loyalty for the brand and participating independent hotels, producing a 57% increase in enrollments, a 24% increase in stays, and a 23% increase in room revenue generated through iPrefer bookings, compared

to 2015 activity. To date, more than 1.8 million travellers have enrolled in iPrefer. Offering consumers even more destinations to experience while earning or redeeming their iPrefer points, last year, Preferred Hotels & Resorts expanded its footprint in 27 countries across the globe – marking first-time presence in Sweden, Norway, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar by embarking on new relationships with individual properties and growing alliances with premier hospitality groups. Over the course of the year, the company finalised agreements to represent select hotels within the portfolios of new brand partners such as Katara Hospitality’s Murwab Hotel Group, Nordic Hotels & Resorts, Fortune Hotels, Vivienda Hotel Villas, and Rosen Hotels & Resorts, and was tapped to support the newest openings of existing partners such as NH Collection, Montage Hotels & Resorts, Salamander Hotels & Resorts, sbe, Shilla Stay, Pyramid Hotel Group, and Ocean Properties. CM Travel Solutions and KPMG released a detailed report titled ‘Business Travel in India’ Emerging Trends & Opportunities. With business travel rapidly evolving, and travel gradually emerging as the second-largest area of controllable business spend for corporates, the paper delivers a comprehensive look at where and how business travellers in India are spending. The report also details business travel spending in top 15 countries across multiple sectors over a period of five years. India is all poised to lead this growth and accordingly by 2030 business travel spending in India will have trebled from the present levels. Asia has become the world’s largest business-travel market, and trends suggest India’s significance within APAC will only grow with time. Listed below are some key insights from the paper including significant research findings.

India: The Next Big Frontier for Business Travel As compared to any other country, India is poised for phenomenal growth when it comes to business travel. India is now a US$ 30 billion business travel market and is expected to more than triple to US$ 93 billion by 2030. In 2015, India saw a 15% increase in business travel spending, which will grow by a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 12% through 2020 to 6% by 2030. This increase in all possibility will be greater than the increases in business travel growth in the next 3 largest countries combined, including South Korea, Italy and Brazil. Thirteen years from now (by 2030), India will likely be amongst the top 5 in business travel spending. Moreover this stupendous growth and evolving mix of sectors and markets brings a greater complexity to travel.

Technology: The Major Change Driver & Disruptor Business travellers in India have embraced mobile and social media as a way to connect with colleagues, clients and other contacts. This is no surprise, since smartphones have increased in both usage and popularity among Indian business travellers. The data in the paper indicates a dramatic 300% growth in usage from INR 34 billion worth of transactions in 2009 to INR 109 billion worth of transactions in 2014. In fact Indian travellers are most likely to be transacting on their smartphones as this region has consistently led the charge with smart phone usage growing at 12% from 2014 to 2015. With nearly 25% of mobile phone users in India owning a smartphone/ tablet, the use of these devices to manage travel needs “on the move” including destination research and booking management is only expected to increase.

Business Travellers Achieve Greater Autonomy As travel decisions clearly migrate from corporate-travel desks into the hands of individual travellers, companies must change their behavior accordingly. In particular, they need to develop a clearer understanding of the needs of business travellers and address these directly. Corporates now wish to offer their employees more flexibility in managing their travel needs. As a result, employees can adopt mobile tools for research and booking and will no longer have to go to a fixed internet location to manage their travel. On their part corporates will use data at their end intelligently to understand traveler behavior and also encourage the use of user generated content to improve the overall experience.

The Top 15 Business Travel Markets The paper identifies the top 15 business travel markets and their rapid growth assures that these countries will define the future of business travel.
