One thing about the state is crystal clear that it aims to make tourism one of the largest contributors to the state’s GDP. In an attempt to reach its goal, APTDC has taken some remarkable initiatives including hosting back-to-back mega trade events in a span of just over a year. As per the latest data released by Ministry of Tourism Government of India, A P Ranked as number three in India in domestic tourist arrivals. The state has received 117 million visitors in 2018 – mostly religious, which is expected to reach about 178 million by 2020 – mostly religious. India’s role significant in global tourism growth, WTO Rajesh Tiwari
T
he global tourism surpassed 1.4 billion in international arrivals recording 6 per cent growth over the previous year and generating close to US $ 1.5 trillion in direct spend. It is no longer a secret that tourism is among the leading economic sectors across the world today. And this is particularly true for South Asia, which achieved astonishing growth rate of 9 per cent in 2017, and shows its continued increase in the first 9 months in 2018. India’s role in this growth has been especially significant. And the year 2019 belongs to India as the country is hosting the official celebrations of World Tourism Day, an annual event of UNWTO. Highlighting India’s growing profile as a tourism destination as well as the fact that the country has emerged as one of the fastest growing tourism
source markets in the world, Eunji Tae, Officer, Regional Department for Asia and the Pacific, UNWTO, said: “India’s contribution to the region’s success was substantial. In fact, India´s position in the world tourism map becomes more significant both as a destination and as a source market.” Tae was speaking at the recently concluded South Asia’s biggest travel exhibition SATTE. Also stressing that its high time that the tourism development became more sustainable and responsible, she emphasised, “We not only need to grow, we must grow better. That´s the only way we could continue to grow and evolve in a long term. These developments imply responsibility, especially ensuring the growing contribution of tourism to social, economic and environmental sustainability. As much as the tourism sectors are connected globally, this
work of economic, social and environmentally sustainable development also needs mutual collaboration between different countries and regions, between public and private sectors, and between tourism industries and community in general.” Tae also reminded that 2019 is particularly relevant with India hosting the 2019 official celebrations of World Tourism Day, an annual event held on 27 September which serves as a backdrop to underscore tourism’s potential and real economic and social contribution. The event this year has been themed, “Tourism and Jobs: A Better Future for All” highlighting challenges and opportunities which cut across sustainable development. “As this year´s theme of World Tourism Day, policies for fostering talents, providing and maintaining decent jobs in the tourism sector are at

the core of UNWTO’s work and partnership with its members. South Asia and India have proven the importance of skills development for job creation. Let us deepen our collaboration to maximize tourism’s input to the 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Together let us prove the real power of tourism in achieving the tourism development which leads a better future for all,” Tae pointed.

Union Interim Budget 2019
The Union Interim Budget 2019 was presented by Acting Finance Minister Piyush Goyal on 1st February 2019. Since it was an interim budget there were no announcements about new schemes and any policy measures. A full-fledged Budget will be presented after the House reassembles after the general election. Here are the reactions from travel and hospitality industry veterans on the budget. We congratulate the government for presenting a forward-looking and progressive interim budget. This budget while announcing financial sops for MSME’s, farm and health sectors that form the backbone of the economy and tax relief for the middle class, also sufficiently prioritized infrastructure for railways and airports by allocating hefty investment to add fillip to ongoing progress. For airlines, the business has grown exponentially in the last year as UDAN Yojana has made travel possible for anybody and everybody. This has put an unexpected burden on airports severely crowding them. Dr. Ankur Bhatia Executive Director Bird Group
The move by the government to increase the tax exemptions will lead to additional savings thereby leading to more discretionary spends and travel and tourism can be one of the beneficiaries The overall emphasis on improving rural connectivity with an outlay of Rs 190 billion will lead to easier access to key tourism destinations which are located in rural and semi-rural areas. Furthermore, the government’s continued emphasis on the North East by allocating additional resources to the region will dramatically improve the connectivity and give a boost to tourism. Peter Kerkar Group CEO Cox & Kings
This has been a fabulous budget and I compliment my good friend and Finance Minister Piyush Goyal for a fantastic job. The FM has managed to do something for a large cross section of society - the middle class, the farmers, workers in the unorganised sector. At the same time, he has ensured that fiscal deficit remains at 3.4%. This is a people’s budget that will help the economy and also lays down a vision for the next 10 years. This could well be a game changer budget in this election year. I feel that the government with this budget has certainly injected a lot of josh without losing its hosh! Ajay Singh Chairman & MD SpiceJet
This is the Budget for a New India. The honorable interim FM has meticulously balanced priorities of various sections of our society and delivered on his government’s vision of ‘SabkaSaath, SabkaVikas’. This Budget makes a strong promise to the people to India, which I hope will be backed by an equally strong delivery, especially in the areas of job creation and addressing the skill-talent gap. The announced tax breaks, together with low average inflation, are likely to spur domestic demand and spending, and inject liquidity in the market. This is great news for sectors such as hospitality and travel. The announcements on bridging the digital divide and improving efficiency through technology are also welcome. Ritesh Agarwal Founder & Group CEO OYO Hotels & Homes The interim budget highlights the government’s proposition to further enhance the infrastructure of roads, railways, airports, urban transport and inland waterways which will bring new and unexplored destinations on the tourists map as well as enhance the overall travel experience. A vision for a Clean India with enhanced regional connectivity will be a great leap for Indian states promoting existing as well as new tourism products.

Goa Carnival 2019 to begin on March 2nd Goa Tourism has been promoting this festival on a huge scale every year and there is an overwhelming response from both domestic and international visitors to the state. News Desk
G
oa is gearing up for Carnival 2019 which is one of the most awaited festivals of the year. Carnival would begin on 2nd March starting from Panjim, 3rd March at Margao, 4th March at Vasco and Ponda and 5th March at Mapusa, Morjim and Curchorem. This year Carnival is expected to be bigger with an increase in the number of floats. A lot of tourists both domestic and International visit the state to experience this festival exclusively.
Carnival is Goa’s most famous festival and has been celebrated since 18th century. The origins of carnival are apparently the hedonistic feasts of ancient Rome and Greece. It made its appearance in the Spanish and Portuguese colonies, where it metamorphosed into the very Latin singingdancing bouts.
8 February 2019
The Carnival is presided over by King Momo, who on the opening day orders his subjects to party. Carnival is meant to be a feastingmerrymaking orgy just before the 40 days of Lent; a time of abstinence and spirituality. It begins from the capital city of Goa- Panjim. The entire state will be seen with colourful floats and decorations The exciting and fun-filled four-day nonstop extravaganza of fun, frolic, song, music and dance that is uniquely Goan is a Pagan festival popular in Latin American countries that were colonies of Portugal at some point in time. It is a typical Latin, song, music and dance and precedes the “Lent”. During this festival, huge parades through the cities are organised with bands, floats and dances and balls in the evenings. The USP of this festival is the uniqueness that it has. Goa is the only state to celebrate a distinctive festival like Carnival. The highlight of the exotic frenzy of merriment is the appointment and arrival of King Momo and his retinue to the capital city Panaji on Fat Saturday, the eve of Carnival. They
form the head of a parade of colorful floats and troupes of masked revelers attired in gorgeous costumes singing and dancing in gay abandon to lively music that is usually performed live.

T
he state of Andhra Pradesh is banking high on exploring opportunities in adventure travel segment, and there are enough reasons for that. According to industry estimates the travel industry globally generates US $3 trillion worth of direct business yearly, making ‘tourism’ contribute the one-tenth share of the world economy. Out of this, adventure tourism is pegged at a staggering US $ 500 billion, which is further growing at a robust 18 per centyear-on-year. Long coastline with all the potential to develop adventure activities, the undulating hills of Eastern Ghats running deep inland with some of the highest peaks to be found all along India’s Eastern coastline, pre-historic caves to attract globalcaving enthusiasts, Andhra Pradesh has everything to attract domestic and international adventure enthusiast.

It boasts of the country’s second longest coastline extending 700kms. Beaches like Ramakrishna and Rushikonda lining the Bay of Bengal, offers hot spots for swimming and surfing. In an attempt to taking advantage of this, VUDA and APTDC have started a helicopter ride at Rushikonda Beach and there is a huge scope to do a lot more in this space. The 14th ATOAI Convention in Araku Valley was a part of the government’s intention of making Andhra Pradesh as one of the preferred tourism destination for adventure enthusiast. “Having a vast potential to attract all kinds of travellers, we are very keen to establish required facilities and activities to boost adventure tourism in the state. The whole objective of this event is to discuss and exchange the ideas to capitalize the natural resources be it long coastline, huge water bodies and beautiful places such as Araku Valley and Gandikota have potential to become the hub of adventure tourism in the state,” said Mukesh Kumar Meena, Secretary Tourism, Government of Andhra Pradesh. As informed by him, APTDC has established an Academy of Adventure Sports at Gandikota and a Sky School of Paramotoring at Horsley Hills. Scuba Diving Academy has been set up at Vijaynagaram and Rushikonda. The Academy will have three hubs at Kondapalli (Kethanakonda) in Krishna district, Gandikota in Kadapa district and Thatipudi reservoir in Vijaynagaram district. The Academy would be one of the best resources — fully equipped with technical equipment and skills, for utilising in emergency for disaster management. Apart from this, the state government is running various programmes to train youth of the state. 22 Everesters who have completed their training with the support of government’s programmes, participated at the ATOAI Convention in Araku Valley. “We are not just inviting private stakeholders to come here and start business on their own,
but we are supporting them at the initial stage. The government will establish institution, where private stakeholders can generate some business for them, and train the local youth as well. I hope that the association will become a part of development of adventure tourism across the state,” he added. Speaking on the samelines, Himanshu Shukla, Chief Executive Officer, Andhra Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation said that APTDC has most customized orientation policy for tourism. The land is given at a very reasonable price with lot of subsidies in operation. For adventure tourism, APTDC has a special cell which helps and guides the investors. “The government has a budget of Rs. 300cr for infrastructure development. We will facilitate with the initial infrastructure and facilities to establish an entity. Though we are out of operation, it has to be done by the private stakeholders only. APTDC has identified around ten sights at the moment which are available to start a project for adventure tourism. The entry and exit is very seamless, if one operator is not able to do it as per their expectation, he can leave the business, and the government will give opportunity to other operator.” “We are very much interested if somebody come forward and start a river cruise from Polavaram Dam (On Godavari River) to Rajahmundry. We are willing to provide all kind of support required to establish this facility,” he added. Since the state’s bifurcation in 2014, APTDC is keen to develop Andhra’s tourism profile. The state has, since November 2017, hosted key travel industry events like ADTOI Annual Convention, IATO Annual Convention and the recently concluded 14th Annual Convention of ATOAI in Araku Valley from January 17 to 20, 2019 in order to showcase the state’s diverse tourism attractiveness for different market segments put those in tourism spotlight.

There is a huge opportunity for adventure tourism in Andhra Pradesh and I am sure it will be as good as Madhya Pradesh and Uttarakhand. We as the representative of the adventure tour industry keen to maintain high level of professionalism among our members. The district of Vishakhapatnam is an abode of natural beauty which can attract adventure tourism. The sea, hills, caves, green, forests and water bodies between Vizag and Araku make the region beautiful. If Kayaking and boating can be introduced in the streams flowing around Borra caves and surrounding hills, it can attract a big number of travellers as well as the growth for economy of the state. The adventure tourism segment as such has different needs than leisure tourism or a hotel industry. Therefore, we suggest that there is a need to come out with a tourism policy with adventure tourism as the subsection of overall policy. We are a low investment and infrastructure industry which makes us very sustainable and eco-friendly. The available projects in AP require an investment of Rs. 50cr to 100cr and beyond, we do not sustain that level of investment. So, the state needs to come out with lower investment model which is specific to remote destinations like Araku Valley and other regions in Andhra Pradesh which allows good access and basic facilities such as electricity and water connections. The most important component of this policy from adventure tourism’s perspective includes, firstly, availability of land banks on long term lease agreement to setup ecofriendly lodges and campsites. Secondly, there would be marketing assistance programme supported by the state government, which helps to sustain the business for first two years.
Rajesh Ojha Co-chairman Convention ATOAI
There is a huge scope of adventure tourism in Andhra Pradesh. If we can make tourist stay for longer duration there will be good results. If Araku in Andhra Pradesh, Koraput in Odisha and Raipur in Chhattisgarh can be combined, it will generate high revenue and employment through adventure tourism. I believe ATOAI Convention will play a crucial role in establishing adventure tourism in Andhra Pradesh.
For ATOAI it has been a busy 2018. The association was part of several key initiatives by various government bodies last year. It collaborated with Ministry of Tourism, Government of India, in declaring 2018 as ‘Adventure Tourism Year’.’Very importantly, it brought out ‘Adventure Tourism Guidelines’, a first of its kind initiative, for the professionals in this segment. ATOAI played an important role in bringing AdventureNext – the annual event of Adventure Travel and Trade Association (ATTA) in India which was organised in December 2018 at Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh. Adding one more event, ATOAI has partnered with PATA for PATA Adventure Travel and Responsible Tourism Conference and Mart 2019 (ATRTCM 2019) taking place in Rishikesh from February 13-15, 2019.
Amusement Parks As per the reports published in official book of Andhra Pradesh Tourism, the size of Indian amusement parks business is estimated to be around Rs. 4000 crore having generated about 15 million footfalls in recent years in about 120 amusement parks in the country. The sector is expected to attract additional Rs. 10, 000 crore by 2020. With possible support from global leaders like Universal Studios, Disney, Sony and Ripley Entertainment etc. Andhra Pradesh currently has limited space in the recreational tourism space. However, the state’s advantage of being top three most visited states in India and its varied landscapes can be well leveraged to position Andhra Pradesh as the recreation and adventure hub of the country. Creating mega amusement parks in location like Tirupati, Vizag etc. that already attracts millions of tourists annually shall create avenues for tourist to extend their stay also benefiting the local economy. Some potential locations such as Tirupati, Vijaywada, Vizag, Rajamundry, Kakinada, Srisailam and Nagarjunasagar etc. can be developed on the lines of recreation and adventure tourism. Creation of mega theme parks have several inherent advantages such as Strengthening the tourist arrivals in the state Utilising large chunks of low land Generate large employment opportunities locally and Increases the average duration of tourist stay in the state

ew Zealand is a small country, similar in size to Great Britain or Japan. With a population of only four million people it’s also gloriously uncrowded.Tourism New Zealand promotes the country to the world as a visitor destination. In the year ending October 2018, 3.8 million international visitors arrived in New Zealand: an increase of 3.6% on the previous year. International tourism is New Zealand’s largest earner of foreign exchange, pumping over $16.2 billion into the economy and directly employing over 216,000 people. Lying in the south-west Pacific, New Zealand consists of two main islands - the North Island and the South Island. Stewart Island and many smaller islands lie offshore. The North Island of New Zealand has a ‘spine’ of mountain ranges running through the middle, with gentle rolling farmland on both sides. The central North Island is dominated by the Volcanic Plateau, an active volcanic and thermal area. The massive Southern Alps form the backbone of the South Island. To the east of the Southern Alps is the rolling farmland of Otago and Southland, and the vast, flat Canterbury Plains. Spectacular glaciers, picturesque fiords, rugged mountains, vast plains, rolling hillsides, subtropical forest, volcanic plateau, miles of coastline with gorgeous sandy beaches - it’s all here. No wonder New Zealand is becoming so popular as a location for movies.

Impact of the latest currency updates on Indian tourism The current verdict seems to be that the Indian travel industry is booming. The signs universally indicate that the future for the sector will only be strengthened with time.
T
ravel and tourism accounted for 9.4% of India’s GDP in 2017. In fact, the signs look promising and the industry is estimated to grow by 6.9% until 2028. Travel and tourism generated 41.622 million jobs in the year.
Whatever the reason may be, as a result of the same, the Indian travel industry was severely impacted. The US Dollar is the currency used for transactions during most international trips by Indians. Not only does this mean that the cost of buying FOREX becomes more expensive; public transportation, accommodation and even enjoying a regular meal abroad may cost a lot more than usual.
But then, with every opportunity there comes a share of challenges. Especially if you consider the declining value of the Indian Rupee, which may prove to be a big detriment for the travel industry in 2019.
What about the Euro then, the other currency for mass transactions? Even though it only became slightly more expensive against the Rupee, one must remember that the currency had already scored a massive rise against the Indian Rupee in 2017. Moreover, enough increasing fuel costs have also led to a rise in flight ticket costs.
The value of the Indian Rupee fell 10.5% against the US Dollar and 5% against the Euro, over the last year. Among the BRICS nations, the only currency that performed even worse was the Russian Rouble. From the increasing trade deficit to the growing price of crude oil, a variety of factors led to this dip.
But when one door closes, another opens. The value of the Turkish Lira became 20% weaker against the Indian Rupee over the past year, making travel to the country much cheaper. Visitors thronged to visit the culture of Istanbul and the magnificence of Antalya in droves. However, as great a destination as Turkey is for the Indian traveller, one must
34 February 2019
remember that the Euro is a widely used currency in the country. So, the affordability is not really felt as much as one would ideally like. Why then, is there such an upsurge in travel? The answer is quite simple. The definition of travel has changed from what used to be leisure, to what is now a lifestyle. Even though the cost of travel may have increased, the budget that travellers allocate to their expeditions has seen a congruent rise as well. The idea of budget travel has also become a phenomenon in recent times. Budget travellers may decide to not spend extravagant amounts on amenities and luxury and instead, invest on the basic amenities in exotic destinations. This has allowed us to learn as we go, listen to the important feedback from our customers as they operate in this new distribution era and refine our NDC solution to ensure it provides seamless, integrated travel choice.” John Bukowski, Director, Content and Distribution, American Express Global Business Travel said: “NDC is an important step in advancing airline offers and fare options, which we believe should remain focused on delivering value to corporate clients and not as a means to limit access to content, add cost, or force new and costly airline connectivity. We look forward to continuing to engage with Travelport, airline partners, and others to continue to progress NDC capabilities while maintaining a focus on delivering a scalable, cost effective way to access content for our clients.” David Bishop, Commercial Director, Gray Dawes said: “NDC is a major shift in air content distribution so it’s been great to be part of the initial group of agencies with access to NDC content through Travelport Smartpoint. We’ve provided feedback to Travelport as we work together to refine
the NDC work-flow so it best serves the agents who will use it day-to-day and have appreciated Travelport’s collaborative approach.” Mervyn Williamson, Managing Director, Travel and Transport Statesman said: “It’s having a major impact on all of us as we work through the best way to be ready for the new era of content distribution, maintaining at the same time optimum fulfillment service for our clients. Having access to NDC content as soon as possible was of vital importance to us and our travelers so we were pleased to have been part of the initial group of NDCconnected agencies through Travelport Smartpoint.”
