SITE Launches New Online Learning Portal

W

hile there are a number of industry certifications focused on the planning of meetings and events, the Society for Incentive Travel Excellence (SITE) is the only global organisation dedicated to providing training and certification specific to incentive travel and motivational events – the “I” in MICE. In 2013, the association introduced the Certified Incentive Specialist (CIS) programmes, to provide planners and suppliers a greater understanding of the fundamentals of creative and effective utilisation of incentive travel programmes. Since its inception, nearly 1000 incentive travel professionals from 42 countries have earned the CIS designation. The programme is now available online for SITE members with 5+ years of experience. “The support of the SITE Foundation and generosity of our sponsors enables us to continue to develop new curriculum and resources that provide incentive travel professionals the ability to take a more proactive role in planning their own professional development,” stated SITE CEO Kevin Hinton, CIS. “We believe what we learned from the job analysis may eventually be used to create industry-wide standards for job descriptions hiring and selection, performance appraisals and even compensation.”

Rashmi Verma takes over as Secretary Tourism

ICPB announces annual convention from Aug 17-19

ashmi Verma has been appointed the new Secretary, Ministry of Tourism, Government of India. A 1982 batch IAS officer of Bihar cadre, Verma has been moved from Textile Ministry to the Ministry of Tourism. She has held various key positions in both the home cadre Bihar, and in the Central departments in more than three decades of her official career. She was Principal Secretary and Managing Director of Tourism, Bihar Government and also held various senior positions in the Central Finance Ministry in the Revenue Department before her appointment as Secretary – Textiles. Verma will replace NK Sinha who has been holding the additional charge as Secretary Tourism since the superannuation of Vinod Zutshi couple of months back.

ndia Convention Promotion Bureau (ICPB) has announces the 10th edition of its annual convention – ‘India Conclave’ from August 17-19th in Mumbai, Maharashtra. According to Chander Mansharamani, Vice Chairman, ICPB, “The convention will offer a platform for all key industry stakeholders to come together and deliberate on making India a hub for international MICE events. We aim to aid the various associations in their bidding processes and hope that through our convention we are able to inform them about the procedures in order to get more international MICE events to India.”

TAAI NR meets at Claridges New Delhi

he Travel Agents Association of India – Northern Region (TAAI NR) chapter recently organised its membership meet at the New Delhi’s Claridges Hotel. The meeting was attended by TAAI members from the Northern Region and were updated on the chapter’s recent activities and initiatives as well as its forthcoming plans. The meeting also discussed industry issues like GST, IATA and Joint Bank Guarantee scheme, among others. The meeting also served as the platform for the visiting Romanian Tourism Minister Cristina Lonela TARTEATA to showcase TAAI Northern Region members the diverse tourism facets of her country. The event was also attended by Radu Octavian DOBRE, Ambassador of Romania to India who shared details on Visa facilitation.

Deccan Odyssey all set for major makeover & upgradation Rajesh Tiwari

T

he first and finest luxury train of the country – Deccan Odyssey is all set for a major makeover before the next season. The upgradation work will be carried out at highly modern sophisticated Railway Workshop in Matunga for next six months. The luxury train is expected to resume its services from the beginning of October. This was informed by Arup Sen, Director – Special Projects, Cox & Kings while interacting with Whereabouts at the sidelines of GITB 2017 concluded in Jaipur recently.

With the average life-span of train being 25 years, Deccan Odyssey has lived half of her life. And that requires a complete overhaul for the train to get a new lease of life. While elaborating on the process, Sen said: “In railway technology there is a term ‘Mid-life Rehabilitation’. The mandatory Mid-life Rehabilitation for train mean that they undergo major structural repairs and complete refurbishing of the interiors of the coaches after a period of 12 to 15 years of being on the rail.”

Furthermore elaborating on the technicalities of the Indian Railways he informed that currently all the Indian Railway trains run on mechanical suspension, that is, supported by three sets of spring near the wheels, the one in the middle being the ‘primary suspension’, below the coach. According to Sen the ‘primary suspensions’ will be replaced with the ‘pneumatic suspension’ resulting in bestin-class and much improved ride experience while travelling aboard Deccan Odyssey. The difference that it will do is that

when the train is moving at a speed of 100-120 kms/hr, you can actually keep your drink on the table without fearing that it will fall off. The upgraded luxury train will also boast of bio-degradable toilets from the current direct-discharge toilets. Besides, it will also feature better air-conditioning system as well as improved coach connection. The connection between two coaches will be improved. Deccan Odyssey has been trend-setter luxury train in India. Fagged off in January 2004 by the then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee the train had many firsts in terms of design, features and facilities. It was the first luxury train to have a spa, salon, gym, presidential suite, fully air-conditioned and hygienic kitchen and climate-control air-conditioning. Deccan Odyssey covers an array of services that include regal class cabins, multi-cuisines restaurants, sitting lounge, hightech conference car and a rejuvenating health spa. Since its initiation, this luxury Indian train has refurbished its facilities and services from time to time so that every time a better experience can be shared with the travellers.

H

elping tourism’s silent march in the national scheme of things, be it poverty alleviation or job creation, Tourism Finance Corporation of India (TFCI) has played an important role over the last two and half decades. According to TFCI Executive Director, B M Gupta, more than 40 per cent of the total room capacity, which has been created since the institution’s inception 25 years ago, in the organised sector in India, has come with the assistance of TFCI.

It depends on whether the project will materialise in three, four or five years because it involves land issues, entrepreneurship issues as well as putting people’s money into this. Any project that fits in to our thinking that yes this can operate, we provide necessary term-on-assistance. And that is the assurance to the tourism sector also that if we feel yes this project can sustain, we make all-out efforts to finance that project. We see our role as that of a catalyst for categorising, or inviting or may be promoting investment in the sector,” he said. For the current financial area TFCI has a budget of about 1500 crore that it can sanction. And with the disbursements for the sanctioned projects generally taking place over a period of two to three years, the disbursement, informs Gupta, is nearly 60 per cent of the sanctions.

And now amidst the growing emphasis of putting tourism in the spotlight in order to bring the rich socio-economic windfall that tourism triggers in a destination’s economy, this specialised tourism finance institution can not only play a crucial role in expediting the tourism infrastructure growth in the country but can also play a catalyst’s role in spurring Government’s new policy initiatives that seeks to develop ‘mega-tourism zones’ and other such initiatives like PRASAD (Pilgrimage Rejuvenation and Spirituality Augmentation Drive) and others. Gupta says that TFCI’s role is very prominent in two stages. “One is to plan the necessary infrastructure required in the country, that is, to provide facilities to tourists, whether domestic or foreign. Because some way or the other we are also connected with the Ministry of Tourism (MoT) and when it comes to planning, we also contribute in our own way. Though they (MoT) have large resources available with them but we also provide, through various channels and means, the necessary inputs and feedback.” The other aspect is that TFCIs is an organisation that has been especially created for developing the necessary infrastructure for the tourism sector. And therefore it’s role is also to act as a catalyst for creating investment opportunities in the sector.

However, Gupta further points at the changing landscape tourism related lending. “At the time when TFCI was created, no banker was prepared to give long term loan to these kinds of projects. Today the banks are also contributing. If we are able to sanction 1,500 crore, banks are able to sanction about 6,000 crore,” he pointed. According to Gupta’s estimate about 5,000 crore of total sanction for tourism related project can be seen in a year in the country. “That is the industry size of investment. Now 5,000 crore of loan means that total project size will be of about 80009000 crore in the country. That is normally taking place. And because promoter has to put their contribution also, we can safely assume it to be 10,000 crore of investment that may be happening (in a year).” Furthermore, Gupta also drew attention to the unavailability of land parcels at right price for hotel development. The availability of land at a rate which can sustain the cost is a critical factor, he points. A 30 year veteran in the tourism sector, Gupta says that it is easy to come up with numbers such as ‘shortage of 200,000 rooms’ etc. “But these projects cannot come up unless the land is available at a rate which is sustainable,” he added.

Middle East Airlines inks a codeshare agreement with Turkish WH Desk

iddle East Airlines (ME) and Turkish Airlines (TK) signed a codeshare agreement recently. The agreement will be effective as of May 15th, covering routes between Turkey and Lebanon, and expanding the travel opportunities for the passengers of both airlines. The signing ceremony took place at MEA Head Quarters in Beirut. Middle East Airlines Chairman and Director General, Mohamad A. El-Hout and Turkish Airlines’ Deputy Chairman and CEO, Bilal Ekşi signed the agreement in the presence of senior officials from both sides. This new codeshare agreement will broaden the commercial partnership between the two companies and their respective countries. At the same time, passengers of both airlines will be given more travel options between Lebanon and Turkey.

Singapore Airlines and Air New Zealand announce new collaboration

ourism New Zealand, Singapore Airlines and Air New Zealand have announced their new joint venture partnership for the Indian market for the travel period May 2017 to April 2018. The campaign aims to increase number of Indian visitors to New Zealand out of Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Kochi, Coimbatore, Thiruvananthapuram and Vishakhapatnam through special promotional fares. New Zealand has witnessed a steady increase in arrivals from India with 53,424 travellers visiting the destination as of March 2017 (a YOY increase of 14.9%). This campaign aims to position the Air New Zealand – Singapore Airlines partnership as a preferred carrier of choice for New Zealand travel. Speaking about the partnership, Steven Dixon, Regional Manager – South and South East Asia, Tourism New Zealand said: “New Zealand is the ultimate destination for many Indian travellers and this special promotional fare provides a great opportunity to turn their dream holiday into reality.” David Lim, General Manager India - Singapore Airlines said: “Singapore Airlines offers 98 weekly connections from 11 cities in India to Singapore and together with our partner - Air New Zealand, we provide over 25 weekly, onward connections to three cities (Auckland, Christchurch and Wellington) in New Zealand.” Scott Carr, Regional General Manager Asia, Air New Zealand said, “Through our alliance and code share services with Singapore Airlines, we connect passengers from 11 Indian cities to Singapore, where they can access three non-stop flights a day to New Zealand. en Gurion airport was recently listed in the top ten best airports in the world according to online travel agency eDreams, and as #1 in the world for shopping. eDreams evaluated the reviews made by its customers to create the ranking about the best airports in the world. This ranking highlights 10 airports taking into account their global quality and the top three airports in the categories of waiting areas, shopping and restaurants. After an in-depth review of more than 65,000 opinions submitted during 2016, Ben Gurion airport is listed in the top 10 and is ranked as the best airport in the world for the category of shopping. The other airports that made the top ten are: Helsinki-Vantaa, Glasgow International, Zurich, Munich F J Strauss, Frankfurt, Geneva, Bangkok International, Oslo Gardermoen and Dublin. Ben Gurion was listed as the best airport for shopping. There is a website that also allows travellers to check out prices and special offers at some of the stores before they arrive at the airport. In addition, Terminal 1 at Ben Gurion is slated to reopen ahead of the renovation schedule – on May 14.Terminal 1 will carry all low-cost flights out of Israel. The newly renovated terminal one will have full duty free shopping options and restaurants as of mid June.

Etihad Aviation Group appoints Robin Kamark as CEO, Airline Equity Partners

tihad Aviation Group announced the appointment of Robin Kamark as Chief Executive Officer, Airline Equity Partners. Kamark will be responsible for leading and developing group’s minority equity investment strategy, which includes stakes in Airberlin, Alitalia, Jet Airways, Air Serbia, Air Seychelles, Etihad Regional and Virgin Australia. Kamark is a 17-year veteran of the airline industry, rising through a range of strategy, commercial and general manager roles at SAS Group to become Chief Commercial Officer. For the last five years, he has been Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer of Storebrand ASA, a leading Nordic financial services business. H.E. Mohamed Mubarak Fadhel Al Mazrouei, Chairman of the Board of the Etihad Aviation Group, said: “Robin is a well-respected leader

in global aviation, with wide-ranging experience at SAS Group. He performed important roles in the restructuring of that airline and has broadened his experience more recently in financial services. Our equity partner strategy continues to be an important element of our business model, and Robin will drive the strategy by adjusting and progressing our approach.” Kamark will lead strategic developments to optimise business performance, revenues and cost synergies between Etihad Airways and its equity partners across the world. ir Arabia reported strong financial results for the first quarter of 2017 exceeding analyst expectations as the Middle East’s first and largest low cost carrier continued to deliver solid commercial and operational results. Air Arabia reported a net profit of AED103 million for the three months ending March 31, 2017, a 10 percent less than the corresponding 2016 figure of AED114 million. In the same period, the airline posted a turnover of AED810 million, a 14 percent less than the corresponding first quarter of last year. The solid financial results were recorded amidst the continuous drop in the yield margins that the industry witnessed in the first quarter of this year; and were backed by Air Arabia’s strong passenger demand as well as cost control measures taken by the carrier. More than 2.1 million passengers flew with Air Arabia between January and March 2017, in line with the record number of passengers carried in the first quarter of last year. The airline’s average seat load factor – or passengers carried as a percentage of available seats – during the first three months of 2017 stood at an impressive 81 per cent. Sheikh Abdullah Bin Mohamed Al Thani, Chairman of Air Arabia, said: “We are glad to see Air Arabia recording strong first quarter financial results despite the impact of lower yield margins that the industry continued to witness in the first quarter of this year. The strong measures that we took in driving cost margins lower while optimizing revenue opportunities have proven once again the resilient and dynamic business model that we operate.” Air Arabia added one new route from its main hub in Sharjah in the first three months of 2017, with flights commencing to Baku in Azerbaijan. This was followed by the announcement of new seasonal flights from Sharjah to Trabzon, Turkey staring June 2017.

PM flags off UDAN flight scheme WH Desk

M Narendra Modi flagged off the first regional flights under the Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik (UDAN) scheme. The three inaugural flights were launched in the sectors of Shimla-Delhi, KadapaHyderabad and Nanded-Hyderabad. The Prime Minister of India launched the flight from the hill station to the Capital of India. He also inaugurated flights on the KadapaHyderabad and the Nanded-Hyderabad sectors through a video conference. The prime minister also announced that the next flight to

take off under the scheme would operate on the Mumbai-Nanded sector. UDAN is a first-of-its-kind scheme globally to stimulate regional connectivity through a market-based mechanism, the PMO said in a tweet. The UDAN Scheme is a key component of the National Civil Aviation Policy (NCAP) which was released by the Ministry of Civil Aviation on June 15, 2016. According to the PMO, airfare for a one-hour journey of approximately 500 km on a fixed wing aircraft or for 30-minute journey on a helicopter would be capped at Rs 2,500. The Airports Authority of India has approved 27 proposals which will see 27 currently served airports, 12 currently underserved airports and 31 currently unserved airports (for a total of 70 airports) connected. Of the 70 airports, 24 airports are in the western region, 17 in the north, 11 in the south, 12 in the east and six in regions of the northeast. As many as 22 states and two Union Territories will be connected through these 27 proposals. The airline companies chosen are Airline Allied Services (Alliance Air), SpiceJet, Turbo Megha Airways, Air Deccan and Air Odisha. The seating capacity of aircraft under the scheme will range from 19 to 78, and 50 percent of the seats in every flight will have a fare cap of Rs 2,500 per seat per hour.

et Airways will add 42 weekly flights connecting three new city pairs as part of strengthening its domestic network to meet growing demand between metros and emerging cities. Introduction of additional frequencies and wide-body deployments between key metros will also boost capacity on existing sectors this summer as the airline bolsters its already extensive network to meet an expected surge in demand during the holiday season. The carrier will commence operations between Nagpur and New Delhi, Lucknow and Kolkata, and Kozhikode and Bengaluru as part of its broader strategy of connecting India’s emerging / tier II cities with India’s metros via direct flights. It will also introduce additional frequencies on the highly travelled Delhi – Amritsar and Mumbai – Kolkata sectors and boost capacity on the New Delhi – Bengaluru and New Delhi – Bhopal routes with the introduction of the wide-body Airbus A330 and Boeing 737 services, respectively. The changes are parts of Jet Airways’ summer schedule which will see the airline operate up to 650 flights per day connecting 65 destinations in India and abroad. By June this year, 11 local tourism boards will have merged into one big entity and renamed Cotentin Tourist office making it, arguably, one of the most powerful tourism board in the country with an annual budget of EUR4 million. More than 8300 Indians have already visited Israel in the first three months of 2017 as per statistics released by Israel Ministry of Tourism (IMOT). Speaking about the growth, Hassan Madah, Director, Israel Ministry of Tourism India said, “India is one of the world’s fastest-growing outbound tourism markets and an important emerging market for us. Keeping this in mind, we have increased our investments heavily in India. We are certain that our continued efforts in targeting the Indian holiday planners through our specially designed advertising campaign for India, ‘Begin your journey to Israel now’ will yield even better results by the year end.” The statistics also revealed 93% growth in Indian arrivals to Israel in the month of March, 2017 compared to the same period in 2015. As such, Abu Dhabi provides one of the best guest experiences in the Middle East. It takes the top spot in the UAE, clearly outranking its two popular neighbours Dubai and Sharjah. Ranked as a separate destination it would occupy the second place, behind only Cyprus. I

n the aftermath of the 24th IATO Convention that Odisha had played host to nine years ago, Odisha Tourism stakeholders had claimed a spurt in international tourist arrivals, and some, notably J K Mohanty, CMD of Swosti Group had, in interviews later, pointed at a growth of 20 per cent in international tourist arrivals to the state. But the momentum was lost in the later years as the year-on-year growths did not remain consistent. In 2013, 66,675 foreign visitors came to Odisha. The arrivals grew to 71,426 foreign nationals coming to the state in 2014 but declined to 66,971 in 2015. The Annual IATO Convention coming back to Odisha in 2017, after a gap of nine years, provides the state tourism stakeholders opportunity to create massive interest in state’s tourism offering, in ways that it helps leave a lasting impact on state’s inbound fortune.

I believe after the convention Odisha will come to the centrestage and our members will enhance the awareness of the state in the global market.

However, for that to happen, the state tourism stakeholders need to come together at the earliest to devise a smart and impactful destination marketing plan around the forthcoming IATO Convention, to create interest in Odisha’s tourism offering. Now is the time for the Odiya tourism stakeholders to start devising a roadmap for developing Odisha’s tourism profile and then implement it aggressively to publicise and promote the destinations in the state leveraging upon the strength and anticipation that the annual IATO Conventions generate. And therefore, the forthcoming convention is going to be a milestone event for the host state for two reasons. Firstly, in driving a strong message to the state’s burgeoning tourism sector, especially the stakeholders from the private sector, of the intent and enthusiasm of the State Government in general and the State Tourism Department in particular. Don’t forget that the Odisha Tourism Minister Ashok Chandra Panda, who had been wooing IATO to bring its Annual Convention to his state for the last two-three years, has now finally seen his efforts succeed. Furthermore his department is headed by seasoned campaigners in Arti Ahuja, Principle Secretary, Odisha Tourism and Nitin Bhanudas Jawale, Director & Additional Secretary, Odisha Tourism, that gives a strong feeling that the Department of Tourism will put all efforts to make it a remarkable event in reviving state’s tourism fortune, a reason why the entire tourism industry from across sectors like travel trade, hotels, tourist transporters

he 33rd Annual Convention of Indian Association of Tour Operators (IATO) is a great opportunity once again for Odisha to showcase its vast rich tourism potential during the forthcoming mega tourism event. We also had successfully conducted the IATO Annual Convention in 2008 bringing in more than 800 tour operators to the state to explore the tourism potential of Odisha which benefited Odisha Tourism tremendously. A lot of tour operators who did not see Odisha in the past had started promoting Odisha in a big way. The overall scenario of the hotel industry has improved a lot during the recent years. Various attractive campaigns of Odisha Tourism in the national TV Channels have been very helpful in branding Odisha’s rich tourism potential. On behalf of the travel trade of Odisha, I take this privilege to announce that Odisha Government has launched most progressive tourism policy that any state has ever produced. The government has identified various patches of land at important tourist places for the investment and the new tourism policy which is loaded with incentives would definitely be able to attract huge investment from the private sector and increase the accommodation capacity in the hotel industry. Once we have good hotels spread out over the beautiful tourist locations of our state, we are sure the footfalls to the state would definitely take a leap forward. he 4th International Buddhist Conference was organised at Udayagiri and Bhubaneswar from 10th to 12th April 2017 by Department of Tourism in association with Odishan Institute of Maritime and South East Asian Studies and Archaeological Survey of India in support of Odisha Tourism Development Corporation (OTDC) and Odisha Mining Corporation(OMC). With an objective to promote the Buddhist heritage of Odisha as a niche product within and outside the country the Department of Tourism has started organising the International Conference on Buddhism in Udayagiri, Odisha since 2013. The idea is to bring to light the rich Buddhist heritage through scholastic deliberations and discussions inviting scholars, academicians, researchers, historians and above all the Tour Operators and Travel Agents from within and outside India to promote this glorious chapter of Odisha’s history. Buddhism in Odisha is as old as the religion itself. It became the cradle of the newly emerging religion. Odisha had played a major role in converting Buddhism from a regional religion of north India to an international religion. It was at Dhauli that Emperor Ashoka’s transformation from Chandashoka to Dharmashoka occurred after his embracing Buddhism.

he convention of the Indian Association of Tour Operators (IATO) in Odisha is a golden opportunity to mobilize tourist attention to the beautiful tourisms sites in the state. Tour operators play a pivotal role in driving tourist to various destinations and influence the choice of tourists to a great extent. So the convention of tour operators in the state should be leveraged to generate more publicity for the tourist sites in the state. We must draw a comprehensive strategy to engage with the tour operators during the convention. Special programmes should be organised to highlight tourism assets and persuade the tour operators to feature more tourist spots of the state in the tour itineraries of inbound tourists. Special packages and incentives may be thought of for tour operators to enable them expand their operation in the state.

Tourists destinations should be properly segmented with different value propositions tied to each of them- so that tourist of different categories can visit their respective sites of choice conveniently. Eco-tourism sites like Bhitarkanika should be promoted for the niche segment of tourists who love wild life and nature. Likewise, tour operators should be advised to market other segments accordingly. Besides, we should spruce up important sites ahead of the convention and make all other arrangements for the smooth and convenient organisation of the event. Pre tour and post tour facilities should be extended to the tour operators so that they can have a convenient and comfortable journey. Care should be taken that the delegates experience best hospitality and leave with a better perception about the state.

The tourism products of the state can be shown like never before. However, for that Odisha Tourism needs to come up with aggressive promotional and educational activities. The tour operators from various parts of the country should be invited for a FAM on regular basis. Odisha has a great potential to attract a large number of tourist from South East Asian countries. All these motivated Indian Association of Tour Operators (IATO) to return to Odisha for 33rd IATO Annual Convention. The state government has extended an overwhelming support which can’t be explained in a few words. The increase in international flight operations from airports in Tier 2 cities like Lucknow, Ahmedabad, Amritsar, Kochi has fuelled the demand for outbound travel.

According to a study conducted by Cox & Kings, the number of passengers travelling overseas for leisure travel from these cities has doubled in the last one year and this is expected to grow, as it gets more convenient to travel to international hubs such as Dubai, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur etc.,

On the other hand, Ahmedabad airport is now connected directly to London, Doha, Dubai and Kuala Lumpur amongst other airlines. These airlines destinations are the hubs for Indian international travel to popular tourist destinations in Europe and USA. The weakening of the pound has led to an increase in traffic from Ahmedabad to the UK.

The growth generated from these Tier 2 cities stands at between 25 -30% and these are catered by full-service carriers such as Emirates, Etihad and also LCCs such as Tiger Air, Silk Air and Thai Smile. The advent of LCCs from these airports has also brought down the fares quite significantly.

Similarly, international airports such as Jaipur have direct flights to Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Bangkok, Singapore, Sharjah and Muscat, whereas Chandigarh which has direct flights to Dubai and Sharjah will soon have a direct connection to Bangkok this month. This has led to the opening of new markets.

Charminar is derived from two distinct words Char and Minar, which means four towers. Mir Momin Astarabadi of Qutb Shah dynasty played an important role and he ordered extensive preparations for the design and layout. Historians believe that this structure is an example for Indo-Islamic architecture combined with few Persian elements. The monument is located in the heart of old city and it is believed that Hyderabad was measured in four directions from Charminar for administrative purposes. Islamic architecture of those times is marked by arches, minarets, and domes. The structure is famous for its profuse stucco decorations and arrangement of impressive balustrades and balconies. The floral design is executed delicately and stands as a masterpiece to the combination of Mughal and Hindu architecture crafted by the local artisans. The four clocks in four cardinal directions were added in the year 1889.

Qutub Shahi Tombs Erected in the memory of the departed kings of Golconda, they are magnificent monuments that have withstood the test of time and nature’s vagaries. This enormous fort was built about 800 years back in Medak, which was then the headquarters of the district. The fort demands one’s attention with its typical construction. It is elevated at about 90 metres height from the ground level and is spread in about 100 acres on the hilly region. On both left and right sides on the top of the third gate, stands out the ‘Ganda Bherunda,’ the emblem of Vijayanagara Empire built by the great ruler Srikrishna Devaraya. The historic fort, which was graced by two great dynasties — Kakatiya’s and Qutub Shahi’s is one of the main attractions of Medak.

Kerala signs MoU with SilkAir to boost tourism WH Desk

hiruvananthapuram, 26 April, 2017: Department of Tourism, Government of Kerala signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with SilkAir in the presence of Kadakampalli Surendran, Minister for Tourism, Govt of Kerala. The initiative is to jointly promote tourism to Kerala from priority markets like Australia, New Zealand, China, Korea, Japan and Singapore by conducting roadshows and other special marketing programmes in the selected cities.

“Department of Tourism has been looking for more opportunities to spread words about the legacy of Gods own Country across all the global markets and to further increase the tourist footfall in Kerala in the coming years. High priority is being given to tourism infrastructure in Rajasthan: NC Goel WH Desk

he development of tourism infrastructure in Rajasthan is being given high priority in terms of new tourism products including new circuits in the state. This was stated by NC Goel, Additional Chief Secretary, Tourism, Government of Rajasthan at the inaugural session of the 9th edition of the Great Indian Travel Bazaar (GITB) at Hotel Lalit in Jaipur. Goel said that the State has already submitted proposals to the Union Tourism Ministry to the tune of Rs. 500 crores for developing innovative circuits like Spiritual, Heritage, Mega Desert, Tribal and Eco-Adventure. Some infrastructure projects under the schemes of PRASAD and SWADESH were also being developed. Owing to the development of infrastructure as well as an aggressive and creative marketing campaign, in the year 2016, Rajasthan registered an impressive growth of domestic tourist arrivals by 18% while that of foreign tourist arrivals by 3 %. In the current year, the tourist arrival trends are suggesting even better growth. Suman Billa, Joint Secretary, Tourism, Government of India said that there has been an impressive growth of foreign tourist arrivals in the country to the tune of 11% and around 9% in domestic tourist arrivals in 2016. The trends in initial months of 2017 indicate a growth of 16 %. He said that a primary reason for a quantum jump in the tourist arrivals was also owing to the electronic visa facility. In November 2014 when the scheme

began in India, only 16 countries were being extended this facility which has now expanded to a whopping 168 countries. Dr. Jyotsna Suri, Chair, Tourism Committee, FICCI and CMD, The Lalit Group said that the Great Indian Travel Bazaar is the most significant platform and the sole promoter of Inbound Tourism in India. Giving a snapshot of GITB over the past few years she highlighted that the number of buyers have increased from 260 to 275. Two knowledge papers entitled ‘Rajasthan – Revelation Beyond the Obvious’ prepared by FICCI and MRSS as well as ‘India Inbound Tourism – The Next Growth Trajectory’ prepared by FICCI and YES Bank were released by the Minister of State for Tourism, Art & Culture, Krishnendra Kaur (Deepa) and the other dignitaries.

his summer, some skilled sand sculptors will present to the public a magical castle of golden quartz sands that they’ve built. The castle is said to come from a 10-yearold girl’s dreams. The reception fountains, fantastical garden, happy angels and naughty devils will celebrate the festival’s 10th anniversary with you!

The first Fulong International Sand Sculpture Festival was held in 2008 to promote sand sculpting art in Taiwan. This year’s festival held from 6th of May to 9th of July, 2017 will be jointly held by the Administration and the Fullon Hotels & Resorts like in the past years. By co-organising the event with the company, the Administration hopes to instill different energy into the festival while attracting even more visitors. Taiwan is blessed with plenty of natural resources that can be used to draw visitors, such as the three kilometer-long golden beach between Yanliao and Fulong in the Northeast Coast.

For its soft, highly cohesive white quartz sands, this beach is acknowledged by the World Sand Sculpting Association to be the best for making sand sculptures in Taiwan. Taiwan is located in the western Pacific Ocean 160 km (100 miles) off the southeastern coast of the Chinese mainland and is a convenient gateway to Asia for the Indian traveler. A number of airlines such as China Airlines, Cathay Pacific, China Southern and Thai Airways fly directly or with a stopover in to Taipei’s an International Airport from the Indian metros of New Delhi and Mumbai. Taipei to the host the Summer Universiade 2017

aipei, the capital city of Taiwan, will be hosting the 2017 Summer Universiade, an international multi-sport event, organized for university athletes by the International University Sports Federation (FISU). Second to the Olympic Games, The Univesiade is staged every two years in different cities. The Summer Universiade consists of 14 compulsory sports and up to 3 optional sports chosen by the host country which includes Archery, Athletics, Basketball, Fencing, Football, Artistic Gymnastics, Rhythmic Gymnastics, Judo, Swimming, Diving, Water Polo, Table Tennis, Taekwondo, Tennis and Volleyball.
