Because the commonwealth is rich in history, it stands to reason that we’ve had more than our share of historic figures in residence. Ten years ago, I wrote an article titled “Historic Homes of Famous Pennsylvanians,” which featured the homes of
famous people such as William Penn, Daniel Boone and Betsy Ross. Since then, I’ve wanted to write another installment of PA’s historic homes because there are so many more to visit. Some of these individuals are more famous than others, but they are all very interesting characters indeed. HISTORIC WAYNESBOROUGH
Historic Waynesborough was the birthplace and home of Revolutionary War general Anthony Wayne. His nickname “Mad” Anthony was assigned to him as a result of his reputation as a hothead and a strict disciplinarian. It’s likely that much of his success as a leader was due in part to strict discipline. After his military career, Wayne retired to Waynesborough to live out his years in quiet with his wife Polly. Retirement lasted only ten years before the president asked him to serve as major general and commander-inchief of the Legions of America. Located in Paoli, Chester County, Waynesborough is just minutes from the fields where Wayne led his troops into battle. Tours of the home are given Thursday through Sunday, March 31 to mid-December. While visiting, you may want to make the short 5-mile trip to Valley Forge National Military Park. 2049 Waynesborough Rd., Paoli, PA 19301 www.philalandmarks.org/ wayne.aspx 610-647-1779 FONTHILL CASTLE Photo courtesy of Visit Bucks County Henry Chapman Mercer (1856Fonthill Castle is truly a one-of-a-kind des1930) was an archaeologist and antination. The first Pennypacker (Pannebacker) to reside in the circa 1720 Colonial Revival mansion was Peter Pannebacker in 1747. As a young man, Pennypacker enlisted in the Army after General Lee invaded Pennsylvania in 1863. His company of soldiers was among the first to engage the Confederates at Gettysburg.
Like his father and grandfather before him, Pennypacker’s interest in public service led him into the political realm. Samuel Pennypacker served as Pennsylvania governor from 1903 to 1907. The boom of the Industrial Revolution was the catalyst for many social issues of the day. Pennypacker is remembered for passing the Child Labor Act of 1905, which set the minimum age for factory and mine workers at 14. A staunch conservationist, Samuel Pennypacker also created the position of commissioner of forestry. Today, Pennypacker Mills is furnished with the antiques collected by the former governor. The collection includes some of his political and personal papers. The Schwenksville, Montgomery County, estate hosts tours, exhibits, workshops and special events throughout the year. 5 Haldeman Road, Schwenksville, PA 19473 http://historicsites.montcopa.org 610-287-9349 GREY TOWERS
Grey Towers is the ancestral home of Gifford Pinchot, first Chief of the Forest Service and two-term governor of PA. Located in the quaint town of Milford, Pike County, Grey Towers was originally built by Pinchot’s parents as a summer home. No doubt this beautiful location influenced Gifford’s father to encourage his son to pursue a career in forestry. The burgeoning lumber industry of the 19th century had a profound and, in some instances, devastating effect on the nation’s Photo courtesy of the Pocono Mountains Visitors Bureau natural resources. Joseph Priestley's manor house includes a laboratory wing where he published more than 30 scientific papers and identified carbon monoxide as a distinct "air." He died in his home on February 6, 1804.
In 1963, the Pinchot family donated Grey Towers and the 102 acres surrounding the estate to the U.S. Forestry Service. Today, the Pinchot legacy continues at Grey Towers through conservation education, events, tours, and walks. 151 Grey Towers, Milford, PA 18337 www.greytowers.org 570-296-9630 JOSEPH PRIESTLEY HOUSE Joseph Priestley (1733-1804) may not be considered a household name, but he identified something in 1774 that we can’t live without – oxygen. Priestley was a renaissance man who counted among his friends Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson. His accomplished life included being a well-known theologian and political progressive. Some of his ideas were so
controversial for the time that his home in Birmingham, England, was burned in a riot. After that frightening incident, Priestley moved his family across the Atlantic to Northumberland, Pennsylvania. It was during his time in Pennsylvania that Priestley correctly identified carbon monoxide. Today, the Joseph Priestley House is a National Historic Landmark and National Historic Chemical Landmark. The furnishings inside the house reflect the time period when he was in residence. Tours are available weekends from mid-March through November. 472 Priestley Ave., Northumberland, PA 17857 www.josephpriestleyhouse.org 570-473-9474

In addition to his love of the American Southwest, Zane Grey adored his home in the Pocono Mountains. An avid fisherman, his home situated along the banks of the Upper Delaware River was an ideal setting for his lifestyle.
ZANE GREY MUSEUM Though it is the American West that made him famous, Zane Grey called the banks of Upper Delaware River home. As a young man, Grey lived in New York but would retreat to Lackawaxen, PA, for his favorite pastime, fishing. It was on one of these trips that he met his wife, Lina Elise Roth, or “Dolly” as he called her. After marrying in 1905, the couple settled in a farmhouse overlooking the confluence of the Lackawaxen and Delaware Rivers. It was here, in 1912, that Grey penned his most noted book, “Riders of the Purple Sage.” Though Grey loved his home in Pike County, he often visited the Southwest, where he gained inspiration for some of his books. Zane and Dolly lived in their Lackawaxen retreat with their three children until 1918, when they moved to California. Zane Grey was a prolific writer whose success allowed him to fish all over the world. In fact, he held more than ten world records for large game fish. He was also the first person to catch a fish over 1,000 pounds with a rod and reel (a 1,040- pound blue marlin in 1930 in Tahiti). The treasured home of the Grey family from 1905 to 1918 is now the Zane Grey Museum. Visitors are able to take a free self-guided tour with National Park Service
rangers and volunteers on hand. Grey’s office and study hold memorabilia, books, and photographs of one of America’s most beloved authors. The museum is typically open Memorial Day through Labor Day. 135 Scenic Drive, Lackawaxen, PA 18435 www.delawareriverhighlands.com/pike/ attractions/zanegrey/ 570-685-4871 If you’d like to read my first installment of “Historic Homes of Famous Pennsylvanians,” log on to whereandwhen.com and click on the link or use your smart phone to scan the QR code below.

Nowadays, people get really excited about repurposing. All you have to do is look at the popularity of Pinterest. The site is chock-full of projects that turn nearly anything into something to be treasured. Converting old, unused railroad beds into usable recreational trails is one of the best examples of repurposing that I can think of. These projects have been going on for decades and continue today. With a total of 162, Pennsylvania has more rail trails than any other state in the U.S., which makes sense when you consider the state’s rich railroad history. One very anticipated Rails-to-Trails project, the Great Allegheny Passage (GAP), is now nearing completion. The organization in charge of this effort is the Allegheny Trail Alliance (ATA). The ATA is a coalition of seven trail organizations from western Maryland and
southwestern Pennsylvania working together to bring the 150-mile Great Allegheny Passage to fruition. This multiple purpose rail-trail system connects Cumberland, Md., to Pittsburgh, Pa. The Great Allegheny Passage is part of the Potomac Heritage National Scenic Trail, which is one of only eight in the country. The trail travels through Pennsylvania’s beautiful Laurel Highlands. Small towns like Meyersdale, Confluence and Ohiopyle complement the GAP with their unique charm, which doesn’t go unnoticed by outdoor enthusiasts who frequent
the trail. This combination of lovely towns and pristine scenery makes the Great Allegheny Passage the perfect way to enjoy PA’s greatest natural resource, its landscape. The nearly level trail takes you along scenic rivers, quaint towns and shady glens.

The final stretch of the GAP, between Homestead and Pittsburgh, is expected to be complete in June. At the southern end of the GAP, the trail connects with the C&O Canal Towpath, creating a 335-mile motor-free route between D.C. and The Salisnury Viaduct in Meyersdale. Pittsburgh. Whethsage.
