I

enjoy all types of movies. One of my favorites is “Groundhog Day,” starring Bill Murray and Andie MacDowell. (The fact that it is set in Punxsutawney just makes it that more engaging!) There’s something simple and “comforting” about watching the same events play over and over. On a more complex level, it’s a study of human nature and how people and small, insignificant things can have a great impact on our lives. Most times, the characters don’t even notice the change that’s occurring because they’re too caught up in the importance of self.

How often are we guilty of just “being,” rather than participating in the game of life like the characters in “Groundhog Day?” Too often!

Indulging in the arts is a perfect way to get our creativity, love and compassion for ourselves, our neighbors and our communities back in sync. It can start simply, as a very basic need to be entertained.

Being entertained can lead to a giggle, a laugh, a tear. That feeling can lead to an action of a smile, a word, a helping hand.

Just like the movie, it won’t matter if we have six more weeks of winter or not. It’s what we do with those six weeks that matter!

Attend a play, dinner theatre, or event. Volunteer your time and thank those that make these events possible. An investment of yourself, your time and your money will strengthen your community. The change will be subtle at first, and you may not even see it coming, but the rewards will be great!

I

t may be considered “the old standby,� and for good reason. Dinner and a show is still the quintessential date night of choice. When you consider the price of movie tickets, popcorn, Raisinets and a Coke these days, you might as well spring for a great dinner and live theater without ever leaving your table.

Dinner theatre likely got its start in the 16th century with the Madrigal feasts held during the Twelve Days of Christ-

mas. If you lived in England during the Middle Ages and your connections to nobility garnered you an invitation, you would be dazzled with stunning pageantry, bawdy humor, endless amounts of succulent food, and delightful music.

Plays, or masques, as they were known, were often performed for over-fed guests at these Madrigal Feasts.

The heyday of modern dinner theatre was probably in the 1970s, but it has enjoyed a resurgence in popularity

T

here are a few winter activities that really take me back to my childhood. One of them is sledding, or, more specifically, holding on for dear life as I careened down a snow-covered cornfield. The trick was to steer clear of the six-inch remains of cornstalks that made perfect racing lanes with painful consequences if you landed on one. My siblings and friends

would stay out for hours until our fingers and toes passed the point of numbness right into pain. Most of the time we didn’t go inside until our mothers called us for supper.

Our pants were so snow covered and frozen that they stood on their own after we took them off. Sadly, there is a generation of children who may never experience that type of first-person fun. I say first-person because the fun that many kids experience on a daily basis is on the other end of a video game controller.

It takes less than a minute to reach the bottom of the slide, but a ton of fun is packed into those 50 seconds.

original plans and method for grooving the ice. One-foot thick, 300-pound blocks of ice are carved from the lake and trudged up the hill and laid side by side to create an ice slide like no other.

The Eagles Mere slide is not an individual experience; the toboggans are meant to be enjoyed by family and friends. Small toboggans will fit six adults and cost $15 per hour, while the larger eight-man toboggans cost $20 per hour. Riders are guaranteed at least two runs per hour, and the thrill is worth every penny. It takes about 50 seconds, at speeds of up to 40 mph, to blaze down the hill and across the frozen lake.

Each year, the attraction raises thousands of dollars for local fire departments that volunteer their time setting up and running the slide. Cold weather, a frozen lake and lots of volunteers are the necessary ingredients to build the slide, so check the website for updates on when and if it will open in 2012.

Another venture that helped Yuengling stay afloat was the Yuengling Dairy, which was constructed across the street from the brewery. It provided residents in the region with ice cream and other dairy products. The dairy remained in operation until 1985.

In 1933, the day after Prohibition was repealed, a truckload of

Yuengling’s “Winner Beer” arrived at the White House, which is a bit suspect considering Yuengling beer takes approximately three weeks to brew and age before it’s ready to ship. Hmmm.

After Frank’s passing in 1963, his sons, Richard and F. Dohrman Yuengling, assumed management of the business. The ’60s and ’70s were lean years for local breweries, as national brands became more prevalent. Many smaller breweries either sold to larger companies or shut down operation all together.

Again, Yuengling weathered the storm and kept on brewing.

Fleming's Christmas Tree Farm has been supplying homegrown holiday spirit since 1945.

It wasn’t my intention that the winter issue would take on such a nostalgic feel, but there seems to be a theme running throughout the book: family, friends, tradition and celebration. And what better time of year for it than during the holiday season?

When you think of Christmas in Pennsylvania, you may think of Bethlehem, known as Christmas City USA, or Lancaster County, with its National Christmas Center. Truth is, no place really has the corner on Christmas, but in Indiana, PA, the holiday spirit is homegrown.

O Tannenbaum A big part of my family tradition is going to Frog Hollow, a local Christmas tree farm, and tagging our tree in early November and then proudly taking it home to decorate in December. The smell of fresh pine cannot be reproduced, which is partly why fresh trees are still a big part of the American Christmas. Tree farms are a big part of Indiana County, so much so that it’s

called the Christmas Tree Capital of the World.

Fleming’s has been in the Christmas tree business since Roy Fleming planted his first seedling in 1945. Today, sons JD and Randy operate the family business in two locations, Indiana and New Alexandria. Generations of families have made the annual trip to Fleming’s Christmas Tree Farm a tradition.

Another growing tradition is the Trees for Troops Day at Fleming’s Indiana location. This year the event is on Saturday, Nov. 26, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Christmas SPIRIT Foundation and FedEx, in cooperation with the National Christmas Tree Association, have joined forces to create a nationwide program to deliver some Christmas spirit for troops and military families. Tree growers donate, collect, prepare and load thousands of trees onto FedEx freight trucks, which, in turn, will deliver the holiday trees to military families in the U.S. and overseas.

2011 will mark the arrival of the 250,000th visitor to the Festival of Lights. A representative from the Indiana Tourist Bureau will be at the gate on Saturday, Nov. 26th, to present that visitor with a special gift.

The bureau will also be sponsoring Trolley Rides to the festival on Nov. 25 and Dec. 2, 9 and 16. The trolley will depart at 5:30 and 7 p.m. each of those nights from downtown Indiana. There is a small fee for the trolley, with proceeds going to the Festival of Lights.

Indiana County is known for quaint towns that would have very easily fit the bill as Bedford Falls. It’s not difficult to imagine how Jimmy Stewart’s upbringing in one of these small towns may have shaped the person that he became.
