I
have to admit that embracing the winter doesn’t come naturally for me. I’m a summer/fall girl through and through. After the holidays, I’m ready for spring. Ironically, my best friend is pretty much the opposite, she loves the cooler temperatures. Several years ago we made a pact: she tries to experience summer through my eyes and I try to experience winter through hers. Ever since then, that’s just what we’ve done. Even if your instincts tell you that winter is the time to hibernate, why not try something new, something out of your comfort zone? Whether it’s snow tubing, skiing, snowmobiling or attending a winter festival, the Keystone State has so much to offer. Romantic secluded getaways for couples and all-inclusive family resorts with indoor waterparks and outdoor winter sports make this a great time to plan an off-season escape! While many choose to visit museums in the summer to avoid the heat, I think winter is a great time to discover the amazing treasures found within hundreds of Pennsylvania museums. From world-renown to obscure collections, priceless to peculiar, the exhibits are as diverse as they are intriguing. In our winter feature we’re showcasing some of the more unconventional museums in PA. Whatever you decide to do this winter, make it memorable!
Share photos of your family having fun this winter on our facebook page or tag us on instagram. /whereandwhenpa Two year-old twins Carson (top) and Beckett know that winter is best experienced outdoors!

P
ennsylvania is known for world-class museums. The Philadelphia Museum of Art, the State Museum of Pennsylvania and the Carnegie Museums in Pittsburgh are just a few. The state also has quite a collection of quirky museums that would make a great bucket list. Civil War Tails at the Homestead Diorama Museum: Rebecca and Ruth Brown have always been fans of history, specifically the Civil War. They made their first diorama at age 11 and used it to teach other homeschooled children about the Battle of Gettysburg. They made their soldiers in the shape of cats simply because they loved cats. The fascination with the Civil War continued into their college years. After classes, while other students were going out with friends, the twin sisters were making tiny cats out of clay. Today their childhood dream is a reality in the form of their museum in the historic 1869 Gettysburg Homestead, which was once a dormitory for soldiers’ orphans. Located in one of the most historically recognized places in the country, Civil War Tails at the Homestead Diorama Museum interprets the historic Battle of Gettysburg like no other museum. It houses seven dioramas depicting important scenes from the Civil War from the Angle at Gettysburg during Pickett’s Charge to

the fight for Little Round Top. The detailed accuracy of each soldier’s uniform and the battle scenes themselves are incredible. For some who visit, it takes a while to realize the miniature soldiers are actually cats. Though the cats make it seem like an irreverent approach to such a solemn point in history, the dioramas serve to share the soldier’s stories of courage and perseverance in a way that is both unique and approachable. After decades of study, Rebecca and Ruth are very knowledgeable about the war, and they share detailed accounts during tours of the museum. In all, there are approximately 4,000 cat soldiers on display, but their inventory has exceeded 7,000.

m Mr. Ed’s Elephant Museum & Candy Emporium: Just a 10-minute drive from Gettysburg is the iconic Mr. Ed’s. Founded by “Mister Ed” Gotwalt in 1975, it was billed as “The Area’s Most Unusual General Store.” The business has evolved over the years and is now under the ownership of Ed’s granddaughter Nicole and her husband Isaac. From the moment you enter Mr. Ed’s, there is no doubt that the shop’s namesake loves elephants. Throughout the old-fashioned candy store you’ll find them ceiling to floor. But, it’s in the free museum that you’ll find a collection of more than 12,000 elephant figurines, circus souvenirs, political novelties, toys and more. Don’t forget to purchase some of their famous homemade fudge before leaving. With more than 70 flavors, it is hard to choose just one.

m The Stoogeum: This is one of the most obscure, yet one of the most incredible museums in Pennsylvania. Whether you are a fan of the Three Stooges or not, you’ll appreciate the scope of this collection of Stooges memorabilia. Personal items, movie posters, props and costumes, rare photos and tons of Three Stooges novelties are included in the nearly 100,000-piece collection. During your visit, catch a show in the 85-seat theater. The Stoogeum is housed in 3-story, 10,000 square-foot building in the Gwynedd Office Park, not where you’d expect to find a museum.

m The Mütter Museum: Though it is not intended to be a museum of oddities, the Mütter Museum in Philadelphia houses some of the most unusual exhibits in the world. The museum was the brainchild of surgeon Thomas Dent Mütter, MD (1811-1858), whose desire to improve and reform medical education led him to donate his extensive collection of medical artifacts to The College of Physicians of Philadelphia. In accepting the donation of 1,700 objects and $30,000, the institution was required to hire a curator, maintain and expand the collection, fund lectures and house the collection in a fireproof building. The Mütter Museum was born and has since expanded to more than 25,000 objects.
Visitors will find meticulously preserved collections of anatomical specimens, medical instruments and models to educate and appreciate the wonders of the human body, and explain the history of diagnosis and treatment of disease. Some of the Mütter’s most famous exhibits include the plaster cast and conjoined liver of “Siamese Twins” Chang and Eng, The Soap Lady, Dr. Joseph Hyrtl’s human skull collection, the jaw tumor of President Grover Cleveland and the museum’s recent acquisition; Albert Einstein’s brain. The museum’s Historical Medical Library is one of the world’s finest research collections on the history of medicine. The library includes more than 400 books printed before the year 1500.

At the Mütter Museum, thousands of items on display span the medical realm, from deformed and diseased body parts to the death cast of “Siamese twins” Chang and Eng to pieces of Albert Einstein’s gloriously nerdy brain. The museum is also home to the outdoor Benjamin Rush Medicinal Plant Garden, named for the Declaration of Independence signer and college founder.

ithin a few hours of most places in Pennsylvania you can choose to surround yourself with the hustle and bustle of some of the best thriving metropolitan areas in the country or you can opt to immerse yourself in areas of great natural beauty guaranteed to soothe the soul. Visitors craving the latter will discover an idyllic destination at the Nature Inn at Bald Eagle State Park in Centre County. Located minutes off the Milesburg exit of I-80 and a half-hour from the campus of Penn State, the Nature Inn at Bald Eagle offers guests an oasis of natural beauty in the heart of the state. Sitting on land owned by the Pennsylvania State Park system, the privately contracted inn welcomes visitors throughout the year. Each season features a wide array of outdoor activities, including fishing, boating, kayaking, hiking and bird watching. The inn’s public spaces and guest rooms open out on spectacular views of forests and lakes offering panoramic views of remarkable scenery. This bed-and-breakfast-style inn and meeting facility emphasizes rustic charm while offering guests modern amenities rooted in the “green” practices of sustainable living. From the lobby at check-in, guests look out at 1,730-acre F. J. Ayers Lake. The cold temperatures of the winter months offer anglers a haven for ice fishing. Winter recreationalists will discover miles of trails for winter hiking, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. Dur-
ing warmer months the lake and other park waters offer access to shorefront and marinas for fishing and docking of watercraft like kayaks and boats. Locals and the State College community have discovered the Nature Inn

Each morning guests are served an extended continental breakfast with daily “Chef’s Special” hot items to energize them for a day of recreation. At breakfast, guests can order box lunches prepared daily to take with them on their hike or activity.
An interesting convenience to having a working inn operating in the middle of an outdoor area like a state park is the option for members of a multigenerational travel group to lodge in a comfortable, traditionalstyle hotel room while other members of the group can enjoy their vacation camping out at a nearby campsite
or sleeping under the stars. Some of the region’s most popular campsites are within walking distance of the inn. These options make Bald Eagle State Park ideal for addressing the needs of all family members when planning a get-together or vacation in the great outdoors. Native birds and homegrown lumber are themes guests will discover
accentuated in the décor of the inn. Guest rooms are furnished with binoculars and guidebooks for visitors to use to discover the many species of native and migratory birds making their home in the park. Audubon prints in the guest rooms, which are named for birds; “One Wild Library” on the second floor offering a collection of aviary reference works; and the stained glass Bald Eagle that serves as the centerpiece of the inn’s lobby let bird watchers know the Nature Inn is a haven for those who share this interest. Handcrafted tables in the dining room as well as the architectural wood accents found throughout the inn celebrate Pennsylvania’s rich lumber heritage, with most of the pieces produced locally with homegrown lumber. The themes of birds and lumber complement the aesthetic beauty of the inn and tie it in with the lush landscape of the park surrounding it. Environmentally conscious travelers may want to learn about the Nature Inn at Bald Eagle’s award-winning green practices. From a 2,800-gallon rainwater harvesting system to the use of Green Seal certified cleaning
products throughout, the property exemplifies the practices of sustainable living. Water-efficient landscaping, a solar thermal hot water system and linens recycled as holiday decorations are just a few of the unique green features guests will discover visiting the property. Since the day the curtains parted for the first time in 1997, the American Music Theatre (AMT) stage has hosted Grammy-, Tony- and Oscar-winning performers. Acts ranging from rock and country to comedy and Broadway tours have thrilled audiences in the 1,600-seat theater. But what really sets AMT apart is that it is the only theater of its kind that features touring acts as well as original shows. The person responsible for American Music Theatre’s acclaimed original shows is artistic director Andrea McCormick. Before coming to A MT, McCormick earned her chops as a Broadway performer and then as an artistic director at another regional
theater. This multitalented dynamo creates two original shows a year. To say these are her babies is an understatement. She writes, directs, choreographs and does the costume and set design for shows such as the annual Christmas show, along with popular shows like “Vegas Legends,” “Crooners” and “Inspire.” Andrea is quick to credit her team with pulling it all together. From seamstresses and shoppers to tech personnel and the stage crew, this cohesive unit brings Broadway-caliber shows to the stage year after year. What people may not realize is that all the original shows are 100 percent live – no tracks. McCormick’s latest labor of love is “Home for the Holidays,” American

The advantage of doing your Christmas shopping online is that you don’t have to leave your house. The disadvantage of doing your Christmas shopping online is that you don’t have to leave your house. It sounds like a contradiction, but it really depends on your perspective. Even if you go to great lengths to avoid the mall during the holidays, you’ll probably discover that you enjoy the experience of shopping the way it was done before malls. And West Chester, Pennsylvania is just the place to do it. What makes the historic town of West Chester special is that it offers shoppers the best of both worlds. Here you find blocks of great shops ranging from fresh, locally sourced markets to fashionable clothing boutiques and everything in between. West Chester is a great walkable town with charm to spare, which is partially why it has received the Great American Main Street
Award by Main Street America. With over 4,000 structures listed on the National Register of Historic Places, shopping in West Chester is a unique experience. West Chester is a college town, so you can always feel the energy, but during the Christmas season, the community takes on a special glow. The streets and shops are flocked with festive decorations, while carolers and special events make it difficult for even the most resolute Scrooge to feel anything but warmth this Christmas.

The hotel is within easy walking distance to great restaurants and unique boutiques and shops. Reserve your holiday stay at hotelwarner.com.
