I would love to zipline through towering trees soaring high above the ground. There’s just one problem, though: I have a fear of heights that I don’t expect to get over anytime soon. Ziplining seems adventurous to me, but then so does riding a rollercoaster. For many, those activities are fun but not especially daring. My year of living adventurously may or may not include being strapped to cables and stepping off a perch, but it will include doing more activities that include exploration. Rather than just pinning or sharing adventures I’d like to have, I plan to experience them. And, because I live in Pennsylvania, the opportunities are plentiful. From underground caves and mountaintops to foaming whitewater and ancient petroglyphs, I will begin checking off my Pennsylvania bucket list items this spring. How about you? Whether it’s visiting all of Pennsylvania’s state parks, dining at all of our five-star restaurants, or just going on that road trip you’ve been talking about for years, let’s do it. Then, instead of living vicariously through someone else’s photos, we’ll be living our own adventure!

ecause of the abundance of limestone in Pennsylvania, visitors have plenty of beautiful caves to explore throughout the state. Limestone caves are known to be the deepest and longest in the world. Because limestone is soluble, it dissolves over time, forming underground rooms and passages. Rainwater picks up carbon dioxide in the air, forming a very weak solution of carbonic acid that over time dissolves limestone and forms a cave. It is this same water that creates the amazing formations known as stalagmites and stalactites. These incredible formations create sculptures that are still being shaped by the hands of an unseen artist. No matter the season, there simply is no bad time to go on a cave tour since the temperature in each cave stays the same year-round. The underground world of these caves is marvelous. Though we cannot boast having the largest caverns in the U.S., Pennsylvania caves are among the most unique. Cave Basics Attire: Pennsylvania caves average between 48 and 55 degrees Fahrenheit, so a light jacket or sweater is recommended. Shoes appropriate for rough terrain and slippery surfaces are highly recommended; heels and sandals are highly discouraged. Strollers and Wheelchairs: For obvious reasons, these caves are not handicapped- accessible and wheelchairs are prohibited. Strollers are also not permitted in the caves and though front baby carriers are acceptable, back baby carriers are not recommended. Also, the use of walking sticks is not permitted inside most caves. Photography: Although most caverns allow cameras in the caves, some do not allow video recorders. Consult websites for details. Note: Hours and prices of these caverns are subject to change. Consult websites before visiting.

Woodward Cave in Woodward, Centre County, is one of the largest caverns in Pennsylvania. The 50-minute guided tour of the cave features five rooms including the 200-foot-long “Hall of Statues,” where guests can see the 14-foot “Tower of Babel.” This impressive stalagmite is the largest in Pennsylvania. Another spacious room is the “Ballroom,” where square dances, banquets and other events have taken place. Woodward Cave offers an easily walked tour, but is also one of the colder caves in Pennsylvania, with a constant 48-degree temperature. The meadow adjacent to the cave boasts some of the most rare and beautiful wildflowers in the state. In season, the Lily Trout Meadow is alive with more than a dozen native Pennsylvania wildflowers.

Visitors will discover spectacular crystal formations as knowledgeable guides shed light on the geology of the cave. The large open ballroom of the Crystal Chapel has hosted dances and ceremonies dating back to the late 1800s. A
mere mile-long hike brings visitors to the top of Hawk Mountain’s North Lookout, where they can take in 200-degree panoramic view of the Blue Mountain and local valleys below. Soon the lush green of the Kittatinny Ridge will return, and with the change of the Hawk Mountain vista comes the migrating raptors that fly past each spring, returning from their winter vacation. Beginning on Saturday, April 1, Hawk Mountain Sanctuary’s counters will take their place in the counting pit atop North Lookout, awaiting the migrating hawks and eagles. The Spring Migration Watch and daily migrant raptor counts will occur daily through Monday, May 15. The sanctuary’s professional conservation staff will help to make a Hawk Mountain visit enjoyable and accessible
to people of all demographics, allowing for a diversely informative experience for all. The scientists, counters, volunteers and trainees stand ready in the Visitor Center and along the lookouts, eager to share raptor and wildlife information as well as the story of Hawk Mountain. A Bit of History In the late 1920s, Hawk Mountain gained popularity among hunters when the northern goshawk began to migrate through the area, and the Pennsylvania Game Commission offered $5 a bird in an attempt to control the goshawk population. This particular hawk was also considered to be a “vicious killer” by local farmers, who saw it as a threat to their livestock. The hunting of hawks increased substantially as hunters shot down any and all hawks migrating past Hawk Mountain, hoping to hit enough goshawks to bring home the money. Eventually, nearby conservationists began to express concern.

Richard Pough, a conservationist from Philadelphia, visited the Mountain and took photos of the mass hawk slaughter. In 1933, Pough presented the experience before the Hawk and Owl, Linnaean, and National Association of Audubon societies. In the audience was Rosalie Edge, founder of the Emergency Conservation Committee. Edge was immediately inspired to take action. She leased the property previously owned by the Keystone Lumber and Supply Company in 1934 and later purchased the surrounding 1,300 acres of land in Berks and Schuylkill counties. She then established the Hawk Mountain Sanctuary Association. Hawk Mountain became the first wildlife refuge for birds of prey established globally, and it also pioneered the first monitoring of raptor migration patterns, making the Hawk Mountain annual Migration Count the oldest in the world. Over time, the popularity of sanctuary visitation grew, and many found an appreciation for the hawks and the stunning views.
Many volunteers contributed as a fundamental part of data collection and visitor services. Maurice Broun and his wife, Irma, respectively, were the first to fill these roles, and were essential to the early success of Hawk Mountain. What’s Flying Today Today, Hawk Mountain Sanctuary’s committed visitor, operations, education and conservation staff, along with about 200 volunteers, works to make the mountain a welcoming and educational destination. Whether visitors are there for the views or the hawks, the experience is designed to be wholesome and impactful. Throughout the year, and especially during the migration seasons, Hawk Mountain offers a variety of educational programs, lectures and workshops on-site to engage visitors in the importance of raptor conservation. The sanctuary also offers similar events covering various nature topics of importance, such as native Pennsylvania bees and local rattlesnakes.
International conservation science trainees collecting raptor data at the Lookout. The programs often focus on conservation efforts and how visitors can get involved. The education staff, along with the help of interns and trainees, offers programs tailored to people of all ages and interests, which are usually free with the purchase of a trail pass or membership. Interested readers can find Hawk Mountain’s upcoming events at www. hawkmountain.org/events. Spring Migration Hawkwatch Hawk Mountain invites visitors to look for returning raptors and other migrants during its annual Spring Hawkwatch, held daily from April 1 through May 15 at the sanctuary’s famous North Lookout. The trails, as always, are open from dawn to dusk and require a membership or trail pass to enter. During the count, staff, trainees and volunteers are stationed at the lookouts to help visitors spot and identify raptors,
including broad-winged hawks, red-tailed hawks, ospreys and bald eagles. Migration typically peaks in mid to late April, especially on days with southerly winds and cloud cover, when counts of more than 100 birds may be seen. Beginning in the 1960s, the sanctuary has monitored the spring raptor migration, reporting an annual average of 1,063 raptors. Since 2000, conservation science trainees have regulated the daily count at the North Lookout during the second half of the spring migration, using the training of experienced volunteers and staff to learn migration count techniques. The trainees come from all over the world, bringing their global experience to Hawk Mountain for several months, and then return to their home countries with new conservation and research skills. In conjunction with the count, spring weekend programs are held every Satur-
day and Sunday. Volunteers and the international conservation trainees often lead these programs and stay at the lookouts to interact and offer help to any visitors. The available weekend programs cover a variety of raptor observation basics and offer guests a unique and beneficial education opportunity while visiting the sanctuary. Hawk Mountain maintains a schedule of four programs each day, including Binocular Basics, Raptor Trapping and Tracking, Name That Raptor, and the sanctuary’s signature free live bird program, Raptors Up Close! Long before the Pocono Mountains attracted visitors with waterparks and outlet shopping, and generations before the “honeymoon heyday” saw the construction of resorts featuring heart-shaped tubs, fertile farmlands of the valley west of the Delaware Water Gap attracted settlers to the region. Offering some of the richest soil in the state, this part of the mountains is where family homesteads were laid out largely by German and English immigrants. These original farmers were the forefathers of those who would go on to develop “The Poconos” as one of the country’s most popular vacation destinations. Today, this same spot is where visitors will discover Quiet Valley Historical Living Farm, a meticulously restored working farm that re-creates farm life as experienced by the original settlers of
the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Driving to the property, visitors will follow the well-traveled highways of Interstate 80 and Route 209 to access roads leading to the farm. Turning onto Turkey Hill Road, which leads to Quiet Valley Farm, guests will feel as if they have entered a different time and space – a place where technology has not yet encroached and where a more mindful way of living can be experienced. At Quiet Valley Living Historical Farm, guides dressed in period clothing and portraying family members who lived on the property will greet guests and share with them the daily routines practiced by the original Pennsylvania Germans who built the site. The farm dates back to 1765, when it was established by members of the Depper family of Germany, who
made their way north from Philadelphia to settle near Stroudsburg. Through marriage and inheritance, the farm stayed in the original family until 1958, when it was sold to Alice and Wendell Wicks. The Wicks, along with their daughter and sonin-law, Sue and Gary Oiler, restored the farmhouse, and in July 1963, it was opened to the public as Quiet Valley Farm Museum. Over time, additional buildings were renovated and reconstructed, including a “granddaddy” cabin, outdoor oven, icehouse and smokehouse, as well as some smaller barns and sheds. An educational building and a picnic area were added later, and in 1994 a one-room school-
house was built to create the Quiet Valley Historical Living Farm that operates today. Sitting on 114 acres of pastoral land, the farm operates year-round for both educational and recreational visits. Public tours are offered from midJune through Labor Day but group tours can be arranged throughout the year. School trips to the farm offer students the opportunity to step back in time where history comes alive and they can learn about life on a working farm, where everything from spinning flax for cloth to plowing fields with farm animals is demonstrated. Students and visitors alike will walk away from their visit having experienced the labor required on a daily basis to keep a family farm running prior to the advent of electricity and modern machinery. While the mission of the farm is to re-create and curate historic farming practices, in today’s world of conscious eating, Quiet Valley Historical Living Farm also offers visitors a primer about food production. Through sustainable practices, the farm shows visitors how food is sown, grown and produced. Public workshops throughout the year offer an opportunity for visitors to learn the skills that farm families practiced before technologi-
cal advancements in the world of agriculture. Today, workshops and classes offered by the staff highlight topics as varied as candle making, basket weaving, food preservation and techniques for cooking on a hearth. On a tour, visitors will see these skills demonstrated as part of the re-creation of farm life. Visitors may also want to explore the special events scheduled throughout the year that re-create and celebrate events farm families would look forward to throughout the calendar year. In April, 19th Century Days offers demonstrations on topics like animal husbandry, spinning, weaving and gardening; Farm Animal Frolic, held the last two weekends of May, features livestock demonstrations like sheep shearing as well as opportunities for children to meet and discover farm animals; October’s annual Harvest Festival weekend is about gathering the crops and celebrating fall food favorites that are prepared and served; and the popular Old Time Christmas in December recreates the holidays as experienced on a historic farm with activities to
delight visitors, such as a candlelight tour, caroling and the presentation of a live Nativity. As our world gets busier and more automated with each passing day, a visit to Quiet Valley Historical Living Farm offers a chance to slow down and appreciate the beauty often found in simpler ways of living.
