groundhog day
On February 2, 2016 Punxsutawney Phil will make his 130th prognostication. Will he see his shadow and predict six more weeks of winter? Records show that only 17 times an early spring was predicted.
HistorY Groundhog Day has its roots in Candlemas Day, a tradition associated with early Christians in Europe. Early German settlers brought the tradition to Pennsylvania along with this rhyme: “For as the sun shines on Candlemas Day, So far will the snow swirl until May” Get information on Groundhog Day events at Gobbler’s Knob at

PENNSYLVANIA'S TRAVEL GUIDE
Top: Chandeliers hung from the trees in Lititz Springs Park during the 2015 Fire & Ice Festival. Left: Taking our turn in the photo booth Brenda, Jocelyn and Wendy.
I have to admit that winter has not always been a welcome season for me. The thought of being cold just wasn’t appealing. But, after covering various events in the wintertime for my job, I’ve come to one very stark realization: People who celebrate in the cold are very special indeed. Not just a hearty stock, a truly fun-loving and appreciative folk. I love the fact that communities throughout Pennsylvania are embracing winter by holding festivals at a time of year when most of us rush from house to car, car to the office, and so on. For a decade, we’ve had a booth at the Lititz (Lancaster County) Fire & Ice Festival that’s held every February.
I am always amazed at the thousands of people who not only venture out in the cold but also genuinely enjoy it. Last year, we decided to have a free photo booth rather than the carnivaltype game we usually offer. I still enjoy looking at the photos from that event posted on our Facebook page. Family members and friends made the very most of the single-digit temperatures. Old and young alike forgot that they couldn’t feel their fingers any more while hamming it up for the camera. Because of festivals like these, I have come to enjoy this time of year in a way I never thought possible. So bring on the snow, hot cocoa, ice sculptures, rosy cheeks and Christmas carolers - I’m ready!

in Northern Pennsylvania
I
t’s a rural, rustic region of Pennsylvania, known for its forestry, wildlife, and outdoor sports. But northern Pennsylvania is also an ideal region for a romantic getaway. Vast miles of rural woodlands and back country lanes create a perfect setting for a secluded romantic retreat. Think about it: a roaring fireplace, a cozy cottage or elegant bed-and-breakfast and absolutely nothing to do but relax and watch a peaceful snow fall outside the window. Driving along a tiny country road in the northwestern end of the region known as the Pennsylvania Wilds, one might not imagine the rural surroundings would suddenly lead to a five-star Relais & Châteaux resort. The Lodge at Glendorn (1000 Glendorn Drive, Bradford; glendorn.com) in Bradford is
by Cara O'Donnell
a luxury nature resort designed in the style of family camps of yesteryear. In fact, that’s what this resort was originally designed to be. The Glendorn family owned the sprawling 1,500 acres of woodlands at the edge of the Allegheny Mountains as a family retreat, gradually adding additional cabins as the extended family grew. Today, there are 16 different accommodations, ranging from traditional luxury guest rooms in the Main Lodge to individual log cabins in the woods. For the utmost seclusion, choose the Forest Hideout, a 1931 stone and brick cabin at the top of the hill. Furnished with luxurious linens and antique pieces, the Hideout welcomes couples with a wood-burning fireplace, a king bed and a gorgeous outdoor patio. The only neighbors guests will see are inquisitive deer that occasionally wander up the drive. Similarly, The Overlook cottage features a king-size bed in a room filled with luxurious antiques and a jetted tub in the bath, as well as wood-burning fireplace and expansive outdoor deck with spectacular views. When not at the cottage, guests can relax at the resort’s spa, indulge in a couples’ cooking class, Photo courtesy of The Lodge at Glendorn

a touch of romance by having roses or chocolate-covered strawberries delivered to the room to enjoy while relaxing in the suite’s giant whirlpool tub. Warm up in front of the fireplace, or indulge with an afternoon at a nearby spa. In the morning, enjoy breakfast in bed with a brunch basket delivered right to the front door before heading out to discover the beauty of the gorge. Sister property Bear Meadows Lodge (744 Dean Hill Road, Wellsboro; bearmeadowslodge.com), located just outside the town of Wellsboro, is rustic and elegant at the same time. In the Headwaters room, couples looking for a quiet getaway will find just that in the cozy cherry sleigh bed, fireplace, and hot tub out on the large private balcony overlooking the valley.
Continuing east, visitors depart the woodlands of the Pennsylvania Wilds to discover the romance that abounds in Pennsylvania’s Endless Mountains region, where couples can share a toast at a local winery, watch the sun set over pristine valleys or steal a kiss inside a historic covered bridge. It’s in this area where they’ll discover the The Crestmont Inn (180 Crestmont Drive, Eagles Mere; crestmont-inn. com), perched right atop the quaint Victorian town of Eagles Mere’s highest peak. The Cresmont whispers romance from the moment you step onto the front porch. Hosts Tony and Melissa Faulkiner ensure a visit that is anything but ordinary. For a special getaway, book The Diamond Ring suite with its four-poster bed and whirlpool tub for two, or take it a step further and enjoy some of the inn’s special romantic travel package deals, which may include everything from chilled champagne in the room to a candlelight dinner or romantic picnic. Innkeeper Tony is also an accomplished chef who uses his own local ingredients in not just breakfast, but in the inn’s on-site restaurant. Guests can also take advantage of nearby private horse-drawn carriage rides for a special romantic evening. At any time of year, there’s just something about a waterfall that says romance, and the six on the property of the Lodge at Singing Waters (Lodge at Singing Waters Creek Road, Mehoopany; singingwaters.net) just add something extra to the lodge’s already romantic vibe. All of the lodge’s suites offer antique furnishings and elegant charm, but for true privacy, book the Terrace Apartment, a private, cozy, ground-level apartment Photo courtesy of Ross Porter, Mansion District Inn

with its own kitchen, dining area and living room, plus a luxurious Forest Room bedroom and bath that is decorated to feel as though you’re in your very own woodland paradise. The Terrace Apartment opens to its own patio with amazing views of the ravine and two of the waterfalls. In the morning, take a stroll on the incredibly manicured grounds and enjoy your morning coffee in the gazebo, or wander to gaze at the waterfalls on-site. It really is a beautiful way to start the day. _____ A winter escape in northern Pennsylvania is ideal for couples looking for a quick getaway at a value price. It’s the region’s quiet season, so visitors won’t have to worry about large crowds or premium prices. The region’s rural nature, whether in the charming towns of the Endless Mountains or in the rustic elegance of the Pennsylvania Wilds, offers couples seclusion and serenity, whether celebrating a special anniver-
sary or a “just because” weekend. And the region showcases stunning vistas, from the plateaus of the Allegheny National Forest and the Pine Creek Gorge to the landscapes viewed from a romantic covered bridge. What’s more, it’s the perfect area to remember just why you fell in love.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR Cara O’Donnell is a Pennsylvania native who has spent more than a decade working in the travel and tourism industry. During her travels, she’s been fortunate enough to enjoy wine tasting on an Italian hillside and snorkeling among giant sea turtles off the coast of Maui, but she always loves discovering new and unexpected experiences in her home state.

“And we’re off!” The guide, decked out in full Colonial garb, gives a wink as we set off along the streets of Old City Philadelphia. It’s just after dusk, and we already know this isn’t going to be an ordinary history tour. This is the Tippler’s Tour from Historic Philadelphia Inc. – part pub crawl, part history lesson – and it’s a flavorful and unique way to experience the city’s oldest neighborhoods and historical treasures. The weekly tavern tour (held Thursdays except for major holidays) explores three modern-day watering holes as well as a Colonial-era historic
tavern, where a guide, portraying a real Philadelphia resident of the era, shares stories of the past and a few libations with guests. During the holiday season, the Tippler’s Tour presents Yuletide Cheers & Beers (runs Nov. 12 to Dec. 17), where guests are transported back to the Philadelphia of 1777, and holiday celebrations are as lively as the surrounding tumult. On this tour, the first stop is Salon 401 at the Omni Hotel (401 Chestnut St.), which overlooks Independence National Historical Park. Tourgoers enjoy a craft brew and snacks amongst the elegant sur-

roundings of the restaurant while the guide shares stories of the past, including how taverns and pubs like these were where business was conducted during Colonial times.
Taverns were the hub where news was shared, deals were made, and recruits gathered. The next stop is a few blocks away at National Mechanics Philadelphia Bar and Restaurant (22 S. Third St.). Here, in more traditional tavern surroundings in a building that was once a bank, the group loosens up a bit (another pour of craft beer helps) and the guide begins Photo courtesy Historic Philadelphia
Part pub crawl, part history lesson, it’s not uncommon to raise a glass for a toast to Philadelphia’s famous colonists during the Tippler’s Tour.

more casual tales of Colonial songs and merriment. There are toasts to General Washington, and visitors start to learn a few phrases of Colonial tavern life. Allegedly, Ben Franklin liked to say his drinking buddies were “nimptopsical” or “tipsicum grave” when they’d had one too many. On to The Victoria Freehouse (10 S. Front St.), an authentic British pub, where guests arrive to some warming Welsh rarebit and a pint of craft brew. It’s the perfect locale to toast, relax, and eat and drink. It seems fitting that a British pub is on the itinerary. After all, the British were occupying Philadelphia at this time in 1777. However, it doesn’t seem like that status stopped the merrymaking. The final stop is the historical City Tavern (138 S. Second St.), a
popular spot since the days when Benjamin Franklin was a prominent guest. Guests are handed a mug of cider and a steaming plate of the Tavern’s famous sweet potato biscuits – a recipe of Thomas Jefferson. The tavern’s authentic Colonial vibe, complete with cider, laughter, and a roaring fire in the fireplace, is perfect to top off the evening and leave everyone with a taste of life in the taverns of Colonial Philadelphia. Just try not to get too nimptopsical.
Taverns were the hub where news was shared, deals were made, and recruits gathered.
The two-hour Tippler’s Tour departs from the Historic Philadelphia Center at Sixth and Chestnut streets. Costs are $45 for adults and $40 for seniors/military/students, which includes all tastings and gratuities. Guests must be 21 or over with valid ID.

Yes, snow shovel racing. In this age of the safety-conscious, there seems to be no sensible reason to hold a race where people sit on an implement designed to scoop up snow and fly down a 160-foot hill (of packed snow) at breakneck speeds. For the hearty folks of Beaver County, it’s not about sensibility; it’s about fun! On Saturday, Jan. 9, 2016, the 53rd annual Beaver County Snow Shovel Riding Championship will take place at Old Economy Park. Anyone, age 5 years and older, is invited to participate, but parental consent is necessary for riders under age 18. Registration will be held from 11 a.m. to noon, with racing from 12:30 to 3 p,m. / 50 /

’ve always been drawn to lesser-known quirky events – ones that are short on sponsors but big on heart. All it takes is very dedicated volunteers and the backing of the community to host an event that often ends up among the list of “only in Pennsylvania.” The Keystone State is home to Blobfest, the Whoopie Pie Festival, Dushore’s Outhouse Races and my current favorite, Beaver County’s Snow Shovel Riding Championship.
