or most of my life I’ve looked at fall and spring as purely transitional seasons, mere bridges between the main events of summer and winter. I suppose it’s because summer and winter exhibit the extremes of hot and cold, whereas spring and fall settle somewhere in between. I’ve come to realize that my logic has been flawed, however, especially where autumn is concerned. Fall packs a powerful punch. The weather isn’t typically extremely hot or cold; it’s just extremely pleasant. Other than on a few rare days, the overwhelming heat is behind us, and the freezing cold hasn’t arrived yet. The warm, but not sweltering days, makes outdoor activities ideal. Vibrant red, orange and yellow hues attract leaf-peepers to scenic byways like those along Pennsylvania’s northern tier, the Brandywine Valley and Laurel Highlands. What I look forward to the most in fall are the cool nights when I can turn off the AC, open the windows and let the night air usher in the best sleep I’ll get all year long. Another perk of the cool night air is gathering around a campfire with family and friends. One of my favorite fall activities is the ability to go to a festival every weekend. Seriously. Fall is festival time in Pennsylvania. Whether it’s a fall foliage, a harvest or a music festival, the air is filled with the aroma of delicious food and the delightful sounds of families enjoying Americana at its best. With all autumn has to offer, I am going to enjoy every bit of it. Avoiding the pitfalls of looking too far down the road to the holiday season will be a challenge, but I think fall deserves my full attention.

To say the Autumn Leaf Festival is large is an understatement. The awardwinning nine-day festival attracts more than a half-million visitors to the Clarion area. This is an event that celebrates everything that makes Clarion a great destination, especially in the fall. The town is blessed with gorgeous fall foliage, a scenic river, Clarion University and the warm hospitality of residents, so itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s no wonder people come back to Clarion year after year. This popular event, which attracts more than 70,000 visitors to Bedford, marks its 50th anniversary in 2014. In addition to craft and food vendors, the festival features a full lineup of entertainment. The festival features traditional athletic, bag piping and dancing competitions. The pipe bands draw large crowds to witness the very best in synchronized piping and drumming. AUTUMN TIMBER FESTIVAL Shawnee Mountain Ski Area, East Stroudsburg October 11-12

The Pocono Mountains should be dressed in their autumn finest for this festival. Food, crafts, children’s activities and chain saw sculptures are just a few of the reasons people flock to Shawnee for the festival. Entertainment includes canine agility and trick dog shows, along with lumberjacks doing some tricks of their own. The Iron Jack Timber Team will participate in the log roll (cover), axe throw, speed climb, chain saw carve, sawing and chopping events. Admission charged. 570.421.7231

your calendar for Applefest®. In addition to great food, crafts and a parade, Applefest® features a classic car cruise and tons of nonstop entertainment for the whole family. Applefest® pays homage to the area’s apple harvest and to folk hero “Johnny Appleseed” Chapman, who lived in the Franklin area from 1797 to 1804. While in Franklin, Chapman planted apple trees before moving on to the Midwest and planting his way into history. The festival that began as a quaint pie-baking contest has grown to a huge three-day event that brings more than 100,000 visitors to Franklin each year. iding ATVs in Pennsylvania is one of the best things you can do with your time in the fall. Some places close for hunting season, but a simple phone call to any of the parks or trail systems will give you good solid answers on what areas are open for use. I’ll try to cover the highlights of ATV opportunities right here, but be curious, poke around, and see what else you can find. Some parks are small, and that will allow you to hit three different places in a weekend from one strategically chosen hotel or bed-andbreakfast. Some parks offer camping, or there may be local houses to rent, as well. Some places are big enough that you won’t have any desire to look for other trails. It all boils down to what you like and how you ride. Maybe you don’t ride at all, but you love the Pennsylvania mountains and

foliage turning colors or just like exploring and feeling adventurous. We have that covered, too. There are a few places in Pennsylvania that you can show up to, rent a machine, and run the trails to see what’s happening. Experience is helpful but not necessary, and each place that rents machines will gladly make sure you are capable of keeping their investment and your limbs safe. Often there are guided trail rides led by employees of the park and that can be the best bang for your buck, as you get to see the trails, trees, mountains, and scenery. On tours, you also don’t have to look at a map or worry about anything but running the machine, and best of all, you don’t have to wash the machines or change the oil when you are done. Along with the different types of parks, there are also a large number

of events to attend and participate in. Some events are fundraisers to help the parks to maintain trails or to pay for the larger yearly events. Others are for volunteer fire companies, cancer research, or diabetes awareness. Benefits for local members of the community who are having hardships as well as events focusing on our veterans are becoming more and more common. Taking part in one of these is always a good thing and helps to continue to grow the good name of ATVriding people and our sport in general. It doesn’t matter

who you are, helping people out never feels bad, and doing it while enjoying friends, a good riding experience, and usually good food is certainly not going to hurt at all! There are quite a few events, and there’s no way to list them all, but I’ll list the ones I go to or have been to and enjoyed thoroughly. Some of these are poker runs, some are paid rides with no work required, and some are events where you can win prizes and still help out a great cause. No matter how you slice it, it’s still a day on the trails with great people doing something to help others. Honestly, what could be better? Charity rides come along a little more frequently starting in September as the weather is cooler, hopefully, and people are done with their long summer vacations but are still hoping to enjoy weekends before the weather turns less gentle. On Saturday, Sept. 13, will be the Mines and Meadows Cancer Society Poker Run. Mines and Meadows is a great place to ride no matter what the occasion. It is open from 9 a.m. until dusk all year round; it offers ATV rentals and training. There are places close by to stay or you can camp there, and they also offer the only guided underground ATV mine tour in the state. It’s a great tour, and it’s worth going on. On Sept. 13 and Sunday, Sept. 14, will be the Tri-

County ATV open house. Tri-County is a club that opens its doors a couple times a year to let people see what they do and how they do it. It’s always a great weekend ride there, and there are great people to spend time with. No one will pressure you to join, but once you are there it might be hard not to want to. If you’re closer to the center of the state on Sept. 13, then you may want to check out the Anthracite Trail Riders annual Children’s Miracle Network Ride held at the AOAA Park. This is a self-guided ride through well-marked trails in Pennsylvania’s newest ATV Park. This run is actually older than the park it’s held in, as organizers started

and look for them. If you find one, you get the prize associated with that particular bra. This is a great event, and I’ve never heard a complaint about it from anyone. The sponsors are good and the prizes are great. Check it out if you’re around. This is just one September weekend full of events. The Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire Welcomes Thee! Nestled in the countryside of central Pennsylvania, the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire takes visitors back in time to the era of lords, ladies, knights, and epic battles between kingdoms. Each year, the Mount Hope Estate and Winery, located at 2775 Lebanon Road, Manheim, is transformed into a 16th-century English shire for the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire. The Faire takes place each weekend from Saturday, Aug. 2, through Sunday, Oct. 26, and features a variety of activities and entertainment for all ages. The season culminates with a celebration called Halloween Daze and Spooky Knights during the last three weekends in October. ennsylvania has no shortage of unique small towns, but Jim Thorpe takes unique to another level. Autumn is my favorite time of year to visit this Victorian treasure in the Pocono Mountains region. In fact, during the first three weekends in October, the whole town celebrates the season with annual Fall Foliage Weekends. Every Saturday and Sunday from October 4 to 19, the streets are alive with crafters, artists and food vendors. Visitors are treated to outstanding free entertainment, not to mention the spectacular show put on by Mother Nature. So why do I love Jim Thorpe?

LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION

Nestled between two mountains, Jim Thorpe is situated in a valley carved out by the Lehigh River. Area residents have always known that the quaint village was special but apparently the Swiss Tourist Board thinks so too, since they dubbed Jim Thorpe “America’s Little Switzerland.” More recenty, USA Today and Rand McNally crowned it the fourth-most beautiful town in the country. In addition to the beauty of the town’s location, the proximity to major population centers makes it the envy of most destinations. Jim Thorpe is within a comfortable two-hour drive from both New York and Philadelphia.

HISTORY 101 Jim Thorpe is more than just a pretty face; the town has significant history to add to its portfolio. Though the town bears the name of perhaps the greatest American athlete of all time - until Jim Thorpe’s wife made the town her husband’s final resting place, the town was called Mauch Chunk.

Asa Packer was a visionary who saw the role that transportation would play in the manufacturing's growing dependence on coal. The success of Packer and others like him led to the success of the town. As politicians, entertainers and entrepreneurs were drawn there, the town became a destination for art and culture, a distinction that remains today. MUST SEE

Asa Packer Mansion overlooking the town

Asa Packer Mansion: The home of railroad magnate Asa Packer stands today as it did when the last of the family moved out. Visitors will marvel at its beautiful woodwork, gorgeous chandeliers and breathtaking stained glass windows. The amazing innovations in the home are an excellent example of the forward-thinking man who breathed life into a small town and built a beautiful home, a successful business, and a powerful industry. The mansion was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1985.

The Delaware Indians gave it the name, which means Bear Mountain. They believed the hill overlooking the town (when viewed from Flagstaff Mountain across the Lehigh River) resembled a crouching bear. Jim Thorpe’s real claim to fame is that it is considered by many to be the birthplace of the American Industrial Revolution. Located in the Anthracite Coal Region of Pennsylvania, the town quickly became the hub of commercial transportation. The Switchback Railroad was one of the nation’s first railroads. St. Markâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Episcopal Church: The historic church located on Race Street is adjacent to a lovely row of stone houses and is nestled close to the mountain. In fact, part of the church is carved right out of the side of the mountain! As with much of Jim Thorpe, St. Markâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s has a connection to the Packer family. Beautiful memorial gifts from the family such as million dollar Tiffany windows and an Italian marble altar can be seen on tours of the church. Old Jail Museum: The old Carbon County Prison gained notoriety on June 21, 1877, when four members of the infamous Molly Maguires were executed for murdering two coal mine bosses. Three hundred people, including reporters from the New York Times and / 64 /

the Philadelphia Enquirer, watched as the four were led to the gallows to face their deaths. Before leaving Cell #17, Alexander Campbell again proclaimed his innocence and placed his grimy hand on the wall, declaring, "There is proof of my words. That mark of mine will never be wiped out. It will remain forever to shame the county for hanging an innocent man." After many coats of paint and a completely new wall, the handprint is said to remain as though it were still 1877. Skeptical? See for yourself, the Old Jail Museum is open daily from Memorial Day through Labor Day (closed Wednesdays). It is also open on weekends in September and October.

Excursion Train Rides: The Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway offers the best way to view the gorgeous autumn colors. Whether it’s the Bike Train to White Haven, where passengers board the train (with their bikes) to White Haven and peddle back through the scenic Lehigh Gorge or one of the leaf-peeping excursions offered in the fall.

When we think of George Washingtonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s time in Pennsylvania, naturally Valley Forge comes to mind. But, before he led the Continental Army, Washington was an officer in the British ranks. Conflicting territorial claims between the British and French / 76 /

warranted the service that would become the proving grounds for the father of our country. It was his experiences during the French & Indian War that transformed a young officer into a general who would change the course of history.

During the French & Indian War both the British and French built fortresses; all were strategically located. Some, like Fort Duquesne/ Fort Pitt (present day Pittsburgh) were constructed because of the advantage the location would give them in battle and its access to the three rivers. Others, like Forts Bedford and Ligonier were part of a chain of garrisons built to protect British supply lines and settlers from Indian attacks. Fort LeBoeuf George Washington’s first real experience in military diplomacy came when he was charged with delivering a message from King George III to the French at Fort LeBoeuf stating that they must vacate the territory. The message was not well received by the French, and, in fact said that they (the French) would continue to follow orders to remove every Englishman from the Ohio River Valley. Today, Fort LeBoeuf Museum is situated on the site of the original French fort in Waterford, Erie County. This fascinating museum features exhibits on the Native Americans who inhabited the area, the French & Indian War and archaeological excavations of the site conducted by Edinboro University. Fort Necessity As the name suggests Fort Necessity was built out of necessity to protect George Washington and his troops from impending attack. The hastily constructed fort offered some protection, but with his food supply exhausted and much of his ammunition wet from the pouring rain, Washington surrendered to the French forces. This defeat was a huge disappointment for the young officer, but Washington learned a great deal from the military failure. It was after this defeat, that the British formally declared war on France on May 17,1756. Today, visitors can explore Fort Necessity Battlefield, where the opening battle of the French and Indian War took place. The Fort Necessity/National Road Interpretive Center features exhibits that

Visitors of Fort Ligonier will discover all the facilities you would expect to find in an 18th-century fortress, including the officers’ mess, quartermaster’s room, underground magazine and barracks.

Fort Ligonier Fort Ligonier served for eight years as an important supply link to Fort Pitt. During Pontiac’s War of 1763, it was a vital communication and supply link for the British. Prior to the Battle of Bushy Run, the fort was attacked twice but never taken by the enemy. Today, eight acres in Ligonier have been preserved where the reconstructed fort stands. Before entering the fort, visitors are taken through the museum where important 18thcentury artifacts are displayed including the rare, George Washington Collection. Visitors have the opportunity to see Washington’s hand-written 11page retelling of his experiences on the Pennsylvania frontier, a pair of saddle pistols presented to Washington by the Marquis de Lafayette. control, the French burned their fortress to the ground. The British built a stronghold on the same location, and named it Fort Pitt. By the late 1700’s the entire fort, built of stone and brick, was dismantled. Fort Pitt Museum is located at the fork of the Ohio River, in Point State Park in Pittsburgh. The museum is constructed in a recreated bastion of the British fort, originally built in 1758. Here, visitors will learn about the strategic location controlled at different times by both the French (Fort Duquesne) and the British (Fort Pitt). The museum also tells the story of Western PA’s role in the French & Indian War and the American Revolution.
