PENNSYLVANIA'S TRAVEL GUIDE
F
ootball dynasties, world-renowned artists, the rebirth of industrial towns, a recommitment to nature and historic preservation, and poignant memorials to tragic events - these are just a few of the things that have marked the 50 years since the inaugural issue of “Where & When, Pennsylvania’s Travel Guide.” I am proud to be a part of a publication that is devoted to promoting (okay, bragging) about all the wonderful things Pennsylvania has to offer. Let’s face it, I have an easy task. Pennsylvania has an abundance of intriguing history, world-class museums, a full range of outdoor recreation, and family-friendly destinations. Though Pennsylvania doesn’t welcome as many visitors in the wintertime as during other seasons of the year, there is still plenty to do. You will find no shortage of events as you browse throughout the pages of our winter issue. The holidays always offer a wonderful selection of craft shows, open houses, and live entertainment, but winter festivals abound throughout the entire season. The cold months are an ideal time to plan a romantic couple’s getaway, like the one we’re giving away on page 10. Whether a luxurious lodge like the Chateau Lafayette or a quaint B&B with a cozy fire is your idea of a romantic escape, you’ll find it in Pennsylvania. Have a wonderful winter, and here’s to the next 50 years!

W
hile the snow and chilly temperatures of winter send many to raise the thermostat or search for their Snuggies, a growing number of communities in northern Pennsylvania embrace Old Man Winter and celebrate the coldest time of the year with festivities geared toward families. “We do it to get people outdoors to enjoy a winter weekend,” said Clearfield YMCA CEO Don Herres, who has been coordinating the Y’s Winter Family Festival for the past 15 years. “We do it to keep the kids active building snowmen and sledding.” Those are but a few of the activities offered at more than a half-dozen such festivals that stretch across the commonwealth’s highest and most remote hilltops from the Pennsylvania Wilds and Allegheny National Forest in the northwest to the Endless Mountains range in the northeast. The festivals range from one to three days, and each offers a unique take on the definition of winter fun. Nature walks and exhibits, food vendors, snowmobiling, ice fishing and skating, and cold water plunges have become staples of the events, the latter providing as much fun for spectators as for participants. “I tell them that it will take their breath away,” Cindi McCarty, coordinator of the Sullivan County Kiwanis Winterfest, said of prepping the Polar Bear Plungers she leads to the water’s edge each year. “I jump first and help to get everybody else out.” The Sullivan County event, which will expand to two days in 2015, is a major fundraiser for the Kiwanis Club. Profits from the event benefit local children through the distribution of funds for programs and activities that youths in isolated regions might not otherwise experience. Some winter festival organizers admit that their events are not big moneymakers but rather a way to give back to their respective communities, attract tourists, and provide a cure for cabin fever for local residents. The origins of such festivals vary, with some events boasting decades of history and others being popular revivals of century-old wintertime pastimes in their respective communities. Most are situated inside of or adjacent to state and national forests and recreation trails, which brings guests and nature together in a memorable way. The granddaddy of all winter festivals in terms of longevity and length is the Warren County Winterfest, which will run from Friday to Sunday, Jan. 16 to 18, 2015. According to Ed Atwood, who coordinates the event with his brother, Walt, the event began in 1979 with dog sled races in Chapman State Park near Clarendon. The event quickly grew in popularity, and about five years later, the carnival elements that include an ice skating exhibition, a geocaching competition, and an outhouse race / 30 /

were added. Dog sledding and other canine contests remain the staple of festivities, which can draw as many as 4,500 visitors over the course of the weekend. Obviously, winter’s fickleness can produce unseasonably mild weather or no snow, so all activities are contingent on what Mother Nature bestows. Mild weather, however, doesn’t necessarily spell disaster for a winter festival. “One year, the temperatures went up into the 50s, and everyone came out because it was such a nice day,” related Bob Snyder, one of the organizers of the Marienville Winterfest in Forest County. Regardless of the weather at the point of departure, it is prudent to have sturdy waterproof footwear and to dress in layers that can be easily removed or put back on, as conditions can change quickly in the mountains. winter festivals continued on page 32

s the sun sets on Thanksgiving, many people start the Christmas season by braving the crowds at the malls. Others, however, get into the holiday spirit amidst the warm glow of nearly 800,000 twinkling lights, mechanical displays and cozy shops. Koziar’s Christmas Village came to life in 1948, when William Koziar began decorating the buildings on his farm to the delight of his wife and children. It’s hard to imagine that the Berks County farmer could predict that visits by curious neighbors would one day turn into an annual family tradition / 44 /

spanning generations. Today, it’s not uncommon to see three generations of families enjoying the Christmas fantasyland together. Experiencing the holiday through the eyes of children as they recite their Christmas hopes to Santa evokes nostalgia for many parents and grandparents. It has been said there is only one chance to make a first impression, and there’s not a better example of a great first impression than at Koziar’s Christmas Village. When guests come up over the hill on Christmas Village Road, the sight ahead is spectacular. In the distance, hundreds of thousands

at Kozier's Christmas Village of lights welcome visitors to an enchanting holiday experience. The 10-acre property is filled with festive displays and buildings such as Santa’s Toy Shoppe and the Old-Fashioned Bakery. Children of any age will love the indoor train display in the large refreshment barn, where visitors may enjoy freshly baked cookies and hot chocolate to help warm them inside and out. Christmas carols will fill the air as guests stroll past iconic holiday scenes such as the Nativity and “’Twas the Night Before Christmas.” The Kissing Bridge offers a dazzling view of the lights reflecting on the lake. Over the years, many couples have become engaged or have been married on the bridge, where the toll to cross is a kiss. Dubbed as the “Christmas House” by locals 67 years ago, Koziar’s has received many awards, including “Best Outdoor Christmas Display in the World” by Display World Magazine.

or more than a century, regardless of the season, steam trains and, eventually, diesel-powered locomotives have pulled people and supplies across the nation. Visitors to Steamtown National Historic Site in Scranton, Pa., can likewise experience year round the charm and awe inspired by America's railroading history. A stop at Steamtown is both an educational and a romantic experience, by nearly anyone's standards.
EASTERN REGION calendar of events Canadian National #3254, a steam locomotive built for freight service, waits for passengers at the Moscow, Pa., depot to climb back on board for their return trip to Scranton.
During each day of operation, the bygone steam engine era comes back to life with the sights, sounds, and smells of operating locomotives as well as the stories of the people who made their livings working on the railroad. Special events throughout the year draw history buffs and costumed re-ennactors to the site who only add to the authenticity of the experience.
A large collection of standard-gauge steam locomotives serves as the anchor
of the 40-acre national park. The restored Roundhouse and Museum Complex are also situated at the center of the site. The engines and the many types of railroad cars were the pride and joy of New England seafood mogul F. Nelson Blount, who founded the Steamtown Foundation. After Blount’s death, the collection was moved to Scranton, where the historic site was created. The city of Scranton provided initial funding as part of an urban redevelopment program.
Themed events at Steamtown attract costumed re-enactors, who lend themselves to picture-perfect moments and memories as visitors board the centuriesold trains.
Visitors can treat themselves to a ride in the locomotive cab with the conductors on days when the Scranton Limited short ride is scheduled.
“The history is phenomenal,” says park ranger Dan Kahl. “I learn something new every day.”

The city of Scranton embraced the project from its conception in 1984 and committed to transforming formerly depressed nearby Lackawanna Avenue into a glittering mecca for shoppers. The Mall at Steamtown fills one side of the street with an all-weather bridge over the thoroughfare to large department stores on the other, older side of the street. Specialty shops fill renovated facades that hearken back to the years when the railroad reined supreme. Shopping and dining opportunities abound from Lackawanna Avenue into center city and Courthouse Square, the iconic structures of which were immortalized in the hit television program “The Office.” Cultural centers and small theaters routinely offer as great a variety of live entertainment.
Standing like a sentry at the upper end of Lackawanna Avenue to Steamtown Park is the Radisson Lackawanna Station Hotel, a lovingly restored remnant of the original Lackawanna Railroad, famously referenced in song and film in the mid1900s. Featuring high-end dining and upscale lodging, the Radisson is but one example of lodging options close to the national park. The Museum Complex at Steamtown is comprised of the Technology Museum, the History Museum, a theater that plays a brief introductory video, and the Visitors Center. The Complex is open to visitors every day except Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Day. Winter hours for the museums are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., from early January to early April. The park may be closed due to severe weather, including heavy snow, so those planning a visit should be mindful of the weather and call 570-340-5200 if there is any question regarding site access. For the remainder of the year, the Complex is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Kahl routinely gives tours of the facilities and enjoys interacting with a diverse audience. Formerly a school teacher, Kahl especially likes to help young children, whose concept of trains is often molded by television, relate to the engines and other pieces of equipment. He tries to give local residents a memorable experience, and he even appreciates the challenge of answering technical questions about specific pieces of a equipment. “From one end of the spectrum to the other, I've gotten great feedback,”

Kahl related regarding his tours. “Most people walk away very happy.”
Families board a train at Steamtown National Historic Site. The museums and displays at the national park in Scranton are open all year. Short rides are offered on most weekends, and longer excursions are offered seasonally.
Excursions and short rides take place when the Complex is open, but the schedules vary. Excursions are offered seasonally, and destinations change regularly. In 2014, passengers rode the rails to Moscow, Gouldsboro, Cresco, Tobyhanna, Delaware Water Gap, East Stroudsburg, and Carbondale. Reservations are often necessary for the coveted fall foliage tours, when trains take riders far outside the city for the best views of autumn's splendor. Especially affordable options for families are the Scranton Limited and Nay Aug Limited rides, which provide the thrill of embarking and riding on an old train into the city's suburbs or a centuries-old park. The Nay Aug Limited also passes through an old tunnel embedded in the city's hillside. Short rides are available primarily on weekends.
The Roundhouse is a popular stop on the tour, where visitors can watch the switching of huge locomotives and train cars on a massive turnstile. Railroad cars that met specific needs, such as dining and sleeping cars, the postal car, and lavishly decorated business/conference cars, are on display alongside many giant engines. Extensive details, photos, virtual tours, and reservation information are available at www. nps.gov/stea/index. htm. After checking out the schedules, individuals may call 888-693-9391 to make reservations and prepare to set out full steam ahead!
