Do You Know Where You’ll Vacation This Year?

E

ach year, Pennsylvania welcomes millions and millions of travelers from all over the U.S. and the world. So, what is it that people from other states know about Pennsylvania that we don’t? Often, we’re so familiar with our surroundings that we forget that there’s a lot more to Pennsylvania than the county we live in. For the past year, we at Where & When, Pennsylvania’s Travel Guide, have been working on a brand-new event designed to introduce families to the amazing vacation destinations in the commonwealth. On Saturday, April 21, the inaugural PA Family Travel Fair (PAFTF) will welcome attendees to visit with exhibitors representing attractions and destinations from all over Pennsylvania. At each booth, friendly and knowledgeable people will help you with information about their destination – no high-pressure sales or gimmicks. In addition to giveaways that will be available at individual booths, one lucky attendee will win a $2,500 getaway for four in Northern Pennsylvania! This family vacation will take the winner to four destinations in that region. Each destination will provide accommodations for two nights, plus meals and passes to attractions and activities. If that wasn’t enough, the winner has the flexibility to plan an eight-night trip or break the package up into four smaller family getaways. Complete details for the PAFTF getaway package will be available at the PA Family Travel Fair.

The most fun you’ll have planning your vacation!

Among our exhibitors you’ll find amazing outdoors destinations, historic sites, family fun attractions, campgrounds and unique lodging. The fair will also feature children’s activities. The Pennsylvania Alliance for Geographic Education at Shippensburg University will bring a 22-foot giant map of Pennsylvania. Children will be able to participate in an interactive scavenger hunt involving the vendors. In addition, there will be mascots, face painting and balloon animals - all at no charge. Radio station 90.3 WJTL will host a Kids Cookie Break (KCB) Pop Up Party and will broadcast live from 9 a.m. to noon. Radio personality Lisa Landis and the KCB Car will also make an appearance during the broadcast. Isaac’s Restaurants will serve up some of their amazing dishes inside the café, while food trucks including Auntie Anne’s Pretzels and Good Life Ice Cream & Treats will be set up outside. Although the free PA Family Travel Fair is focused on family vacations, vendors will have great options for couples and single travelers as well.

Each year the panoramic views, hiking trails and picnic areas make Colton State Park on the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon’s western rim a popular destination for visitors as temperatures warm in the months of spring.

By Morgan Christopher There’s a fact that scores of outdoor enthusiasts are quick to share whenever possible: Along Pennsylvania’s northern tier, the counties of Potter and Tioga offer visitors majestic vistas, pristine trails and mountain streams that provide recreationalists a vast playground filled with natural beauty.

The topography of the area, connected by historic Route 6 as the main east-west traffic artery, features miles of lush forests filled with woods that for generations have distinguished the region as the heart of Pennsylvania’s lumber industry. The canyons, lakes and annual bloom of the state flower, the mountain laurel, attracts visitors to the region each spring to celebrate the season.

Lake Tobias Wildlife Park in Halifax, Dauphin County, has quietly become a premier family destination in Pennsylvania. It wasn’t an overnight success,

but rather, the realization of a lifelong dream. “Dad was born and raised here on the property, and he always had a fascination with exotic animals,” recalled Jan Tobias-Kieffer, daughter of the late James Raymond (J.R.) Tobias, founder of the park. It was while he was serving in the Marines during World War II that he started planning to use a portion of his family farm as an animal park. It was also during this time that he developed the idea of converting school buses into “safari cruisers” to take visitors into the natural habitat of the animals. After his military service ended in 1946, J.R. returned home to his wife, Polly, who was a member of the Women’s Army Corps from 1944-45. J.R. was a man of many interests and businesses. His dream of opening a wildlife park was still

v J T o a c a m A w f

a w f c p i c h s c

very much in his plans, but at the time, J.R. considered it a retirement hobby. Throughout his adult life, J.R. owned and operated several businesses, including a dairy, a cement block manufacturing company, an excavating company and a John Deere farm machinery business. All of the businesses were located on the family farm. All seven of J.R. and Polly’s children were involved in the family businesses, including the wildlife park, which opened in 1965. Over the decades, Lake Tobias has grown in size and scope, but the one constant has been the

Tobias family’s commitment to the park. J.R. bestowed the business to his children three years before his passing in 1996. Lake Tobias Wildlife Park receives no state or federal funding, but it relies solely on admission fees to maintain and

grow the animal park. A section of 300 acres on the property is farmed to provide food for the hooved animals in the park. There have been many improvements and additions over the years. In 2017, the J.R. Tobias Museum and Education Center opened to rave reviews. The new facility includes a 300-gallon aquarium with a stingray, a timeline of the history of the park, conservation information and hands-on exhibits including “J.R.

Built a Zoo. Can You?” where children are encouraged to build their own zoo. Perhaps the biggest expansion of all is slated to open this June. The park will open its state-of-the-art giraffe facility as phase one of the zoo’s larger expansion. With approximately 700 animals from 100 different species, a 150-acre safari field and 50 acres of lakes and exhibits, Lake Tobias is a must-see attraction for families. From the majestic African lion and American bison to the entertaining tamarins and gibbons, a trip to Lake Tobias is an affordable way to experience amazing animals that are otherwise out of reach for most of us. While nearly all of the safari animals are born at the wildlife park, the Tobias family works with other zoos to acquire some of the animals. Many of the reptiles are from exotic reptile dealers, and some of them were rescues. In addition to regular operations, the park hosts several special events during the year. Two very popular events are Wild Days Weekend in July, which includes photo opportunities with baby animals, and Boo at the Zoo in October. With a third-generation Tobias now involved in the park, we can be assured that the future of J.R.’s dream is in good hands.

Address: 760 Tobias Road, Halifax, PA 17032 Phone: 717-362-9126 Season: Open May 1 through Labor Day, and weekends in September and October. Also open on Columbus Day.

guest registers with names ranging from Andrew Carnegie and Mae West to Babe Ruth and numerous presidents. In fact, one legend of the Hotel Fauchére is that Gifford Pinchot and Theodore Roosevelt once sketched out the plan for the National Park Service on a napkin while dining at the hotel. The property closed in the ’70s, but the Fauchére was purchased and reopened its doors in 2006, having been renovated and restored to its original grandeur.

And speaking of Pinchot, one of the leading attractions for visitors to the community is Grey Towers National Historic Site, his former estate in Milford. Pinchot (the son of conservationist James Pinchot) was the first chief of the US Forest Service and a two-time governor of Pennsylvania. Built in 1886, the Pinchot family lived on the estate before it was eventually donated to the US Forest Service in the 1960s, the same organization Pinchot founded decades earlier. Today, the mansion itself and surrounding 100-plus acres are open for guided tours; visitors can also take advantage of self-guided tours of the various trails and gardens, some of which have been restored to reflect Mrs. Pinchot’s own gardens in the 1930s and 1940s. The scenic vistas of Grey Towers are

just the beginning of the outdoor wonder to be discovered in the areas surrounding Milford. Springtime flowers wash the landscape in a sea of pastels and lush greenery newly awakened from the cold of winter. The McDade Trail, which starts at Milford Beach, offers spectacular views of the river as well as the trees and fields beyond, and

of course, no visit to Milford would be complete without a trek to at least one of the area’s majestic waterfalls. The three-tiered Raymondskill Falls is the tallest waterfall in Pennsylvania. In fact, if the drops from each tier are added together, the waterfall is only a few feet shorter than Niagara Falls. It’s worth the trip, as is the climb on one of the

nearby trailheads of the Cliff Trail System that leads to what locals call “the Knob,” a point overlooking all of Milford and acres of forests and fields below. The view is simply breathtaking. Another option is to take a day outside downtown Milford to explore the vast Delaware Water Gap Recreational Park, a popular destination for those looking to spend some time in the great outdoors of the Pocono Mountains. The park offers activities ranging from hiking and boating to fishing and camping, as well as trails leading to even more scenic waterfalls. Delaware Water Gap is another nod to the conservation and environmental moments of the ’60s and ’70s, and it’s a wonderful opportunity to get out and have a truly picturesque outdoor adventure. If history and architecture are on the

agenda, visitors never need to depart the charming downtown. The self-guided walking tour of the Milford Historic District leads participants on a leisurely walk through town to discover more than 50 Victorian buildings ranging in styles from Gothic and Queen Anne to Italianate and others, all of which are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Maps can be picked up at hotels and inns, as well as at a variety of other businesses downtown. Also downtown is the Columns Museum, operated by the Pike County Historical Society, which features a collection of artifacts and other items, including Civil War memorabilia, historic farm tools, musical instruments and more. It’s most well known as the home of the 36-star Lincoln Flag, which was draped over the balustrade in the Presidential Box at Ford’s Theater in Washington, D.C., the night President Lincoln was assassinated. That flag reportedly was placed under Lincoln’s head after he was shot. Whichever activities you choose to discover in historic Milford, all visitors can be assured of one thing – that those experiences will be memorable ones. Milford’s appeal is in its charm, its small-village elegance, and its sense of hospitality in the truest sense. You’ll soon understand why many have chosen this small Pike County village as home. t’s easy to forget that there were two major wars with the British more than two centuries ago until one visits the Erie Maritime Museum, home of the USS Niagara, a replica of the Brig Niagara that served as the flagship of the US Navy on Lake Erie. The combined forces of Colonial America won the war for independence from the British crown in the 1770s, but the imperial forces remained at the fledgling nation’s back door and waged a major campaign to recoup their losses during the War of 1812. Much of this war was fought on Lake Erie, one of the five Great Lakes that were, at that time, among America’s hotly contested frontiers. Possession of the lake and its ports changed hands several times during the naval battles waged there through 1814. In hindsight, it may seem that little progress was realized from the fiercest of skirmishes. In the end, only a few prize battleships of the large American fleet, including the USS Niagara, survived intact. Nearly 111 feet long and 119 feet tall, the Niagara was sunk for preservation, then raised and rebuilt several times before its official designation and reverence as the State Ship of Pennsylvania. Today, it serves as an ambassador ship for the

commonwealth and a training ship - or sailing school vessel - for the US Coast Guard. When “off duty,” the Niagara is accessible to the public as both a museum and for four-hour public excursions. “Attendance is always greater when the ship is here,” said Erie Maritime Museum director and ship Senior Capt. Walter Rykba. The Niagara routinely sails from Erie to Duluth, Minn., and

is berthed for maintenance from October to March. Even during the winter months, Rykba maintains, there is plenty to see below the deck. Guides and historical interpreters take visitors back to a time when a crew of 155 men and boys manned the ship, its 18 cannons and two long guns. The story of Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry’s victories upon the vessel will come

to life through a working crew carrying on a centuries-old tradition. “Two hundred years ago, if someone gave you the news about another country that they had seen, odds are nine to one that that person would have been a sailor,” Rykba explained. “Ships are the way that we introduced ourselves to the world.” Far from a luxury cruise on a pas-

senger ship, all participants in a Niagara day sail are considered students on an educational venture. “The appeal of it is that it is very participatory,” said Rykba. Day sailors are buddied with an experienced crew member, called for musters, briefed on their expectations, and then put to work. “They pitch in and pull the lines to set the sails,” he noted. Watching people on the ship turn

from “green hands” to sure-footed crew assistants is Rykba’s favorite part of the job. “I think that’s an important part of the culture to be preserved,” he remarked. “It’s a rewarding experience to be able to advocate for such an incredible mission,” added museum marketing and special events manager Cristy Cook, who noted that people from all walks of life visit the historic site. Prices for the unique sailing experience vary from $86 per person for the general public and $65 each for members of the Flagship Niagara League, the organization that oversees the maintenance and use of the ship under the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission.

Discovery Day on the Flagship Niagara is specifically designed to provide some basic mariner lessons for youths.

The Niagara is unique in that it is one of only two ships remaining from the War of 1812, the other being the USS Constitution at Boston. The programs and exhibits of the Erie Maritime Museum, 150 E. Front St., Erie, go well beyond the USS Niagara. The harbor at Erie, largely protected from the lake’s harshest elements by beautiful Presque Isle, has a long history as a merchant port, a fishery and an early steam-powered electricity generation station. Ship models include a reconstructed mid-ship section of the Lawrence, once a sister ship to the Niagara, and artifacts associated with the USS Michigan, the first iron-hulled ship in the US Navy fleet.
