PENNSYLVANIA'S TRAVEL GUIDE

Paityn and Parker taking in one of the display windows at Koziar’s Christmas Village. No doubt, visions of sugarplums were dancing in their heads that night.

I

‘ve always looked forward to the holidays - the lights, music and spirit of Christmas. And, when there are children involved it is that much better. Last Christmas our family visited Koziar’s Christmas Village in Bernville, Berks County. What a spectacle! Though Koziar’s should definitely be on your holiday bucket list, the Commonwealth offers so many opportunities to experience Christmas with childlike excitement. History has its place in the seasonal festivities. Many holiday traditions like the Christmas tree, Santa Claus and stockings were brought to America by Europeans who settled in Pennsylvania. Whether you choose to usher in 2017 with a low-key affair or celebrate with hundreds of other revelers, there’s a party for everyone. I love that for many communities in Pennsylvania NYE is about infusing their own unique touches on the celebration. Instead of lowering or raising a ball, Mechanics-

burg drops a wrench as the New Year approaches. Shippensburg drops an anchor, while the city of Lebanon lowers a 250-pound Lebanon bologna that the crowd shares afterward. We’ll have a list of these celebrations on whereandwhen.com in mid-December. We sure do enjoy our festivals here in PA and winter festivals are held throughout the early months of the year. Ice sculptures, dog sledding and chili cook-offs abound, while maple syrup producers open their doors to tastings, tours and demonstrations. Unlike Punxysutawney Phil we don’t hibernate until February 2nd. Pennsylvania offers many opportunities to enjoy the outdoors at ski resorts and state parks. And don’t forget, our worldclass museums and historical sites make the perfect indoor excursion this winter.

ou’d be hard-pressed to find any place in America with historical sig4 nificance like that of Pennsylvania. In fact, the Commonwealth’s rich history is among the top reasons that people visit from other states and countries. In the Founders in Pennsylvania series, you will be able to trace the steps of the founding fathers. Part one will feature George Washington.

3

Though he longed for Mount Vernon, his Virginia home, it was Washington’s time in Pennsylvania that changed the course 5 of history and shaped America. Today, you can visit historic sites throughout Pennsylvania and 2 experience George Washington’s mark on our nation.

December 1753 - Waterford 21 year-old Maj. George Washington arrived at Fort LeBoeuf to deliver an ultimatum to the French to vacate the fort and retreat from the territory.

July 1754 - Farmington After a skirmish that resulted in an act of war, Washington and his troops retreated to Great Meadows to await French retaliation. Fort Necessity was a makeshift structure that suffered under the constant volley of gunfire. Washington was forced to surrender.

September 1758 - Ligonier Gen. John Forbes ordered a road be built across Pennsylvania along with a series of forts to serve as supply depots and staging area for 5,000 British-American troops charged with the task of capturing the mighty Fort Dusquesne.

November 1758 - Pittsburgh Washington accompanied to capture Fort Dusquesne well-supplied force found British would later rebuild

Forbes on a second attempt from the French. This time the it burned to the ground. The the fort and name it Fort Pitt.

October 1794 - Bedford President George Washington became the only sitting president to lead his troops into battle when he did so during the Whiskey Rebellion. The Espy House in Bedford served as his headquarters.

1

Philadelphia George Washington made many trips to Philadelphia during his military and political careers. Even after he retired to Mount Vernon, it is said that he made approximately 60 trips to the city. As the first President of the United States, Washington resided in the President’s House in Philadelphia from 1790-97.

Christmas, 1776 - Washington Crossing The months after adopting the Declaration of Independence did not go well for George Washington’s ragtag Continental Army. The year was somewhat salvaged when Washington crossed the Delaware River on Christmas Day and surprised the enemy at Trenton.

August 1777 - Hartsville On Aug. 10, 1777, on his way to New Hope with 11,000 troops, Washington received a dispatch from John Hancock saying that a 260-vessel British fleet carrying more than 17,000 soldiers was headed eastward toward the Delaware Bay. At the same time, a large British force from Canada was advancing from New York. Washington halted his army and made camp at Hartsville. He made Moland House his headquarters until receiving intelligence that the fleet was headed south.

September 1777 - Brandywine To prevent the British from capturing the American capital in Philadelphia, Washington’s Continental Army faced the British Army 25 miles southwest of the city at the Brandywine Creek. The battle became know as the Battle of Brandywine.

During the darkest days of the American Revolution, General George Washington decamped in this recently restored stone building as he and his aides rebuilt the Continental Army. Situated on more than 3,500 acres of rolling hills, Washington’s Headquarters is one of the most popular attractions at Valley Forge National Historical Park.

George Washington 1732-1799

October 1777 - Germantown Washington’s nighttime campaign against the British forced Gen. William Howe’s troops to retreat. But the dense fog had the Continental Army firing on its own positions, so it had to retreat as well. The battles of Brandywine and Germantown had resulted in the loss of 20-percent of Washington’s army.

October 1777 - Norristown After the Battle of Germantown, Peter Wentz Farmstead became the temporary headquarters of Washington before moving on to Valley Forge.

Winter 1777-78 - Valley Forge Washington’s time at Valley Forge proved to be one of the most challenging of his storied military career. His men were not adequately fed or clothed. Of the 12,000 troops that marched into Valley Forge, the force was reduced to 6,000 due to death, disease and desertion. His many pleas for provisions seemed to fall on deaf ears.

From Congress Hall, where the second inauguration of President George Washington was held, to more than a dozen other locations in Pennsylvania, we are indeed blessed to be able to experience the man who is the gold standard in leadership and service. In this Presidential election year, I cannot help but consider this man, who was unanimously elected twice as the president yet never sought the office, but rather felt it was his duty to his country. -Wendy Royal

E

ach year during that month when the halls are being decked and sugar plums begin dancing in the heads of children of all ages, a magical transformation takes place in the town of Wellsboro along Route 6 in the heart of Tioga County. The heart of the business district, which throughout the year is a postcard-perfect example of small-town Americana, transforms and becomes a proper British marketplace complete with gaslights, vendor stalls, and boughs of green gracing the doorways. Musicians and costumed carolers stroll the streets, merchants clad in top hats and scarves sell their wares to eager shoppers,

and it is not unusual to hear the phrase “God bless us, every one!” expressed by residents filled with the heartfelt spirit of the season. Each year on the first weekend of December, Wellsboro pulls out all the stops to celebrate the season with its “Dickens of a Christmas” celebration. Set for Saturday, Dec. 3, this annual festival featuring more than 170 vendors draws visitors from throughout the Mid-Atlantic region looking to experience the holiday season in a small-town setting. At this popular event, characters from the classic story “A Christmas Carol” (as well as other holiday tales of the period) stroll the streets to entertain visitors as they create the theme of a Victorian holiday throughout the downtown business district. During the “Dickens of a Christmas” festival and throughout the holiday season as well, local merchants offer shoppers a wide variety of gift ideas guaranteed to bring a smile to loved ones’ faces. As visitors stroll along

Main Street, merchants welcome them with a wide variety of locally produced products and gift ideas. There is nothing sweeter to discover in your stocking than the syrups of Patterson Maple Farms or the honey of Draper’s Super Bee Apiaries, which will be set up among the many street vendors participating along Main Street. Offering quilting supplies, home goods, clothing, accessories, and fine arts, downtown Wellsboro shopkeepers are fully stocked with great gift ideas for shoppers. When you visit “Dickens of a Christmas” each year, you can expect to meet one merchant offering local products exemplifying the theme of good will toward men on a daily basis. Highland Chocolates is located on historic Route 6 as you enter Wellsboro from Mansfield and Route 15. Operated by Partners in Progress (a nonprofit committed to developing vocational and social activities for people with disabilities), Highland Chocolates employs five staff members working daily with 20 individuals with disabilities to create sweet snacks and fine chocolate gifts for all occasions. You can buy their product at the festival or take a shuttle to the store and experience for yourself this very special chocolate shop committed to doing good works.

Local performers present entertainment throughout the festival including dances from “The Nutcracker” and other popular holiday fare. Local Hamilton-Gibson Productions produces a series of performances over the weekend to share the spirit of the season all weekend long.

Another unique merchant waiting to welcome visitors is Pop’s Culture Shoppe, an eclectic curiosity corner located across from the Wellsboro Diner. Do you remember Old Maid, comic books, and pick-up sticks? Pop’s offers classic toys and games for all ages, as well as strategy games, party games, puzzles, and popular modern games like Magic: The Gathering. For preschoolers, Pop’s Culture Shoppe has toys galore to stimulate imagination. Stop in and let the kid inside you explore! During “Dickens of a Christmas,” food vendors and local restaurants like Timeless Destination, The Steak House, and Wellsboro Diner are open to tempt you

with cider and hot chocolate, as well as homemade soups, chowders, and treats like bread pudding or fish ‘n’ chips that you might find in an authentic English pub. Fresh-roasted peanuts, cookies and kettle corn are served up by street vendors, filling the air with delicious aromas that make a stroll through the festival a gift to the senses! The Penn Wells Hotel & Lodge is a historic downtown landmark and each year hosts a Victorian Tea as part of the festival. Rooms at this famous property usually sell out for the annual event, and the staff has a waiting list of visitors looking to book a stay over Dickens Weekend. (Fear not: Other local hotels, inns, and bed-and-breakfasts are waiting to welcome holiday travelers!) The Penn Wells Hotel serves as the setting for many of the festival events, so visitors may want to stop in to warm themselves with a glass of cheer and sit by the glow of the firstfloor tavern fireplace. Anyone attending “Dickens of a Christmas” will want to be sure to include holiday

entertainment as part of their visit. The Dickens Players, a local performing arts group, sings carols and offers scheduled readings from Charles Dickens’ classic holiday work at various times and locations around downtown Wellsboro. Over the course of the weekend, this group and Photo courtesy of the Penn Wells Hotel & Lodge other performing arts The Penn Wells Hotel & Lodge is picture perfect at Christmastime. groups, including local choruses, musicians and theater groups, offer seasonal entertain- to visit Tioga County to capture the holiday ment guaranteed to warm the heart and share spirit. No holiday event would be complete without an appearance by jolly ole St. Nick and the lovely Mrs. Kris Kringle.

At day’s end, the Dickens celebration reflects the more spiritual nature of the season. A candlelit Peace Walk in late afternoon culminates on the Wellsboro Green with carolling, a tree-lighting ceremony, treats for children, and a visit by Santa Claus. While the annual “Dickens of a Christmas” event is scheduled for the first Saturday of December, the entire period between Thanksgiving and New Year’s is a great time

hen the icy winds of January and February come howling, maintaining a consistent level of activity can be challenging. That’s when the Whitaker Center for Science and the Arts in Harrisburg becomes a virtual oasis of indoor ac-

tivity that stimulates both the body and the mind. Ongoing, seasonal, and one-time programming is geared toward family members of all ages, as well as school groups. But planning for your Whitaker Center adventure is the key to its success. Often referred to as “Harrisburg’s Crown Jewel,” the Whitaker Center, 222 Market St., was born out of the desire of community and business leaders, city planners, art associations, and government officials in the area to develop a site where science and the arts could be integrated in brandnew ways. Ground was broken in 1997 for the four-story, 30,000-square-foot building that now houses a fine arts museum, a 700-seat theater, performance studios, and the Museum of Scientific Discovery. The Whitaker Center is named for Uncas A. Whitaker, whose Whitaker Foundation was established in 1975 to support biomedical engineering research and education, and his wife, Helen F. Whitaker, who started the Helen F. Whitaker Fund to support training for classical musicians. Their combined support to the publicprivate partnership topped $8 million. The Whitaker Center fills a quarter of a city block and features a two-level connecting lobby and entries from Market and Third streets, as well as an internal bridge reaching to Strawberry Square and a parking garage on Walnut Street. The Harsco Science Center offers more than 240 exhibits spread over three stories

I’ve been a small-town girl my entire life, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. Like everywhere, small towns can be found throughout Pennsylvania. While each is unique, they all have one thing in common: a big heart. For me, there’s something magical about a fresh blanket of snow on the tree-lined streets of Lititz, Pa., where I grew up. Add Christmas, and you have a Frank Capra film. There is a town in western Pennsylvania where the name George Bailey is only overshadowed by the name of the man who portrayed him in the classic film “It’s a Wonderful Life.” James Maitland Stewart was born on May 20, 1908, in Indiana, Pa., to Elizabeth and Alex Stewart. Jimmy was the oldest of three children.

Although his father had hoped Jimmy would join him in the family hardware business, he was very proud of him. In The Stewarts lived an idyllic life in In- addition to attending his movies when diana. In all, Jimmy flew more than starring Spencer Tracy. “Dad made a point of moviegoing when a show of mine was in town,” Jimmy once said, “but all my shows seemed to make him drowsy. When he talked to me about one of my pictures, I could always tell at which point he’d gone to sleep.”

FAVORITE SON

Jimmy Stewart’s childhood home in Indiana, PA can still be seen, but is privately owned.

When Jimmy returned from the war in 1945, he came home to Indiana. True to his nature, he refused the hero’s welcome that was being planned for his return. Shortly thereafter, Jimmy returned to Hollywood and his acting career, where he created some of the most memorable characters of all time. Of Jimmy’s 94 film credits, “It’s a Wonderful Life” was his favorite. Dec. 20, 2016, marks the 70th anniversary of the film’s release. Jimmy stayed very close to his family during his filmmaking years. In addition to his visits to Indiana, his parents would also travel to see him. It is said that on one such trip, Alex was very discouraged to find out that his son was no longer attending church on Sunday mornings. Alex left Jimmy’s house and returned with two elders from a church three blocks away. Jimmy attended church from that time on.

HONORING A LEGEND

In 1993, a group of Indiana citizens began to meet about establishing a museum to honor the town’s favorite son. Though Jimmy initially rejected the idea, he agreed once it was explained that the

museum would lend a financial boost to his hometown. But Jimmy insisted that it be modest and if possible located in downtown Indiana. It was decided that the museum would be housed in the library building adjacent to where his father’s hardware store used to be. The Jimmy Stewart Museum opened May 20, 1995, Jimmy’s 87th birthday. Much of the extensive collection came from Jimmy himself. The museum is home to Jimmy’s military and film memorabilia, as well as artifacts from the Stewarts’ family life in Indiana. It’s not fancy, and that’s exactly the way the actor wanted it. The museum has a 50-seat theater where Stewart retrospectives, biographies and films can be screened. The Military Gallery displays many artifacts received from the Stewart Foundation after Jimmy’s death. Now on display are two flight suits worn by Brig. Gen. Stewart, as well as a dress blue uniform and his military tuxedo. Also included in the collection are many awards and photographs spanning his military career. The Indiana Gallery displays the history of the county as well as the history of the Stewart family in Indiana County, which is told through photographs,

scrapbooks and videos. The museum’s newest exhibit celebrates the December 1946 release of “It’s a Wonderful Life,” with images from the museum’s collection as well as an email that the museum received at the time of Jimmy’s death and how the movie personally affected the sender. Nov. 18 - In addition to the parade, marshmallow roasting, hayrides, entertainment, holiday activities for families and the arrival of Santa! The whole town will sparkle as it celebrates the season, with each storefront decorated for the occasion. Nov. 19-20 – Families will enjoy all the holiday activities in IRMC Park, Indiana’s two-year-old downtown pedestrian plaza.

You can participate in Fleming’s Christmas Tree Farms’ annual Trees For Troops by donating at the annual event or by calling 724 463-0570.

Among the highlights will be Santa and two of his reindeer. There will also be a baby reindeer that children can pet. Dec. 9-11 – An Old-Fashioned Christmas awaits visitors this weekend. Period costumes, old-fashioned activities and treats and an antique sleigh will be featured. In addition, a Holiday Home Tour of historic properties adorned in their holiday finery will take place. Dec. 16-18 – A Family Fun Weekend featuring the “It’s A Wonderful Life” Family Fun Run where runners of all ages take to the streets of Indiana dressed as their favorite character from the movie or in any holiday-themed costume. There will also be a Christmas sing-along. Adding to Indiana’s holiday appeal is the fact that the surrounding area is dotted with Christmas tree farms, giving it the honor of the “Christmas Tree Capital of the World.” Fleming’s Christmas Tree Farms will hold its annual Family Fun Weekends from Nov. 29 through Dec. 13. Pick out your Christmas tree and enjoy horse-drawn wagon rides, food, children’s activities and Santa. Fleming’s Annual Trees for Troops event will be held on Saturday, Dec. 3. During the event, people may buy trees at

a special price to be distributed to military bases throughout the world. Since the event began in 2009, more than 1,500 trees have been donated. Families will enjoy live music, face painting, a visit from Santa and the opportunity to meet soldiers. From Saturday, Nov. 12, through Saturday, Dec. 10, IUP’s University Museum will feature the exhibit “Holiday Wheels and Thrills: A Model Train Display.” Admission is free. Located southeast of Indiana in Dilltown is The Dillweed Inn Bed & Breakfast. Each year the B&B’s Parlor Players delight guests with an old-fashioned evening of storytelling. The performances of “Christmas Stories” on Dec. 3 and 4 will fill you with the spirit of the season. Dessert and beverages are included in the $16 ticket price.

Then, on Friday through Monday, Dec. 9 to 12, and Friday through Sunday, Dec. 16 to 18, the Indiana Players will present “‘Twas the Night Before Christmas,” a joyful tribute to the holiday season at the Dillweed. The community that helped shape the life of one of America’s most beloved actors still gives residents and visitors the feel of small-town America, but it also offers entertainment and cultural events that larger cities enjoy. In a scene from “It’s a Wonderful Life” Clarence, the angel, says to George Bailey, “One man’s life touches so many other lives; when he isn’t around, he leaves an awful hole, doesn’t he?” Jimmy Stewart’s life certainly touched so many, but what he left behind in Indiana is a proud and thriving community.
