I think everyone is looking forward to the future when COVID -19, and the restrictions that come with it, are in the past. More than likely, this school year will involve masks or home-schooling, so weekends are more important than ever. While we may not be carefree, our kids should experience that feeling now and then. So, let’s make a plan for an excursion, that’s both fun and safe. There are seventeen weekends from September 1 through December 31, which means there is plenty of time for a getaway or two before the end of the year. Taking a road trip this fall will be a great experience, and will help the hospitality industry and small businesses in Pennsylvania recover losses suffered during the pandemic. How many times have you said, “when this is all over, I’m going to...?” Why put it off? Follow the recommendations for safety and explore this great state of ours!
Remember: always consult destination websites before heading out.
Small Town Getaways Photo credit: Wendy Royal
T
here may never be another Mayberry, but we’re fortunate to have lovely small towns in every corner and cove of Pennsylvania. They still have the same charm and hospitality as the old-school sitcom, but with many amenities of a large city. That’s why exploring small towns is on the top of the list for many travelers this fall. Typically located near ample opportunities for outdoor excursions, towns, and villages throughout the Commonwealth are inviting visitors to stay over and enjoy the unique shops, historic properties, and
great restaurants that locals love. Yes, visit those bucket list sites, like the Gettysburg Battlefield, but don’t visit without exploring the beautiful downtown area, or you’ll miss a lot. Travelers say they prefer to avoid metro and crowded spaces in this uncertain travel climate. I can’t think of a better way to experience the fall foliage than a road trip to explore Pennsylvania’s exceptional small towns. From county fairs to harvest festivals, autumn provides ideal weather for outdoor activities. Due to COVID-19 restric-
tions, many events have been canceled for 2020, while others have been restructured to follow CDC guidelines. One of my favorite activities when visiting a new location is exploring the shops. Shopping local is the mantra for towns throughout Pennsylvania because it is the only way independent businesses compete with the national chain stores.
Manheim

Buying local is embraced at Prussian Street Arcade in Manheim, Lancaster County. This unique shopping experience allows local makers to rent space to sell their products without having to handle money or pay staff to operate their boutique-style micro shop. Co-ops are not uncommon in Pennsylvania, but the vendors at Prussian Street Arcade bring a fresh feel to a time-honored shopping FERN•ISH is one of the eclectic venexperience. In all, the marketplace is the home of Mill 72 Bake Shop & Café, REO Suites, and Prussian Street Arcade. The town boasts several restaurants, in addition to the Weary Traveler Pub & Marketplace, which is slated to open in early 2021. The owners are also the proprietors of Mount Hope Estate and Winery and the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire. Wine, beer, and spirits produced at Mount Hope will be sold at the pub, and tavern fare in the 80-seat restaurant. Manheim is also home to the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire, which occurs on weekends from September 5th through November 1st. Tickets are sold online at parenfaire.com. The website also outlines its safety initiatives and restrictions.
Ellwood City
Treasure hunters know that there are great opportunities for antiquing in Pennsylvania. Antiques shops and centers are plentiful throughout the Commonwealth, including Lewisburg, Adamstown, Clearfield, Columbia, and many more. Elwood City, Lawrence County, is a quaint town with a population near 7,400. You’ll find multiple antique shops, including Market Place on Main, Condition Mint Galleries, and Shop at the UnderPass. The stores have an eclectic selection of antiques and one-of-kind home decor items.

Located within the borough is Ewing Park, a 20-acre all-season park with a beautiful nature trail that winds its way along the Connoquenessing Creek. There is no shortage of natural beauty in the area, McConnells Mill State Park and Moraine State Park are just under 30 minutes from town. These parks offer hiking, biking, fishing, swimming, camping, and even rock-climbing at McConnells Mill. For information onovernight accommodations and more, visit www.visitlawrencecounty.com

Antiques aren’t the only treasures to be found in Ellwood City, Ladybird’s Luncheonette is a great place to grab lunch, while dinner at Shakespeare’s Restaurant & Pub at Olde Stonewall Golf Club is a unique treat. Throughout the year, the town hosts several annual events and concerts held at Community Plaza. Home to the town’s farmers’ market, Community Plaza has cascading waterfalls, flowering planters, shady trees, and an open area for seating.
St. Peters Village
Approximately 25 miles north of West Chester is one of those ethereal places that make the Brandywine Valley a bucket list destination. St. Peters Village is a lovely hamlet that runs along the picturesque French Creek in northeastern Chester County. The 19th-century company town has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 2003. Along the quarter-mile stretch of St. Peters Road, the village shops include Saint

Peter’s Bakery, which recently garnered the distinction of The Best Little Bakeshop in America. In addition to tasty baked treats, you can also grab breakfast or lunch. A vintage arcade, a handblown glass shop, a winery, and other unique shops will make this excursion well worth the drive. The Inn at St. Peter’s is a luxurious bed-and-breakfast with breathtaking views of French Creek. The inn’s restaurant serves Italian cuisine on three outdoor patios overlooking the flowing water and large rocks for which French Creek is known. Hiking is also very popular in the area, with many interconnecting trails allowing you to take a different route each time you visit. Milford

As visitors turn onto Broad Street in Milford, something about the town will immediately seem a little familiar. Not necessarily in a déjà vu way, but rather as if the town is welcoming guests home. That’s Milford, a small Victorian village in Pike County in the heart of the Pocono Mountains. It’s a region known for ski resorts and lakes, outdoor recreation, and familyoriented lodging complexes. But Milford stands out, not only Hotel Fauchére is named after Louis Fauchère who for its nostalgic, friendly feel but was a master chef at the famous Delmonico’s in New for its unique country elegance York before opening the Hotel Fauchere in 1852. that’s both charming and inviting. Foxburg
The 31-mile McDade Trail runs along the scenic Delaware River. Shown: the trailhead at Milford Beach
Nestled along the Allegheny River and accessible by traversing across a series of hills and valleys, the tucked-away community of Foxburg in Clarion County welcomes guests to relax, enjoy the small-town way of life and truly get away from it all.
In Foxburg, everything is within steps of each other. The town is only about a block long, with the Foxburg Inn right at the center. Park the car and just wander along Main Street. Enjoy the river view, rent a canoe or kayak for a trip out on the water, or take a stroll along the water on the rail trail. IMPORTANT: Please consult business websites before heading out. Days and hours of operation are continually changing during this uncertain time. TIPS FOR YOUR TRIP -DININGPennsylvania is a melting pot of cultures; Italians, Eastern Europeans, German and Irish immigrants came here for work, religious freedom, or both, and brought along the traditions of their homeland. Small town restaurants often offer menu items from the people who live there. I have always thought that the best way to understand a different culture is through their food. There’s nothing more satisfying than enjoying haluski and kielbasa from
a diner in coal country, or chicken pot pie in Amish Country. -ASK A LOCALThe best asset of any community is its people. Most are more than willing to direct you to their favorite breakfast place or that hole-in-the-wall shop you may otherwise miss. So, on your smalltown getaway, don’t forget to use the best resource you have, the locals.

FALL MOTORCYCLE EXCURSIONS When the fall months roll around, Pennsylvania’s outdoor scenery takes center stage. Washed in bright hues of red, orange, and yellow, the Keystone State’s fall foliage is among the best in the country. Perhaps one of the best ways to take in the season’s best? By taking a motorcycle tour across the state. These scenic routes promise views of autumnal colors and provide you with looks at historic bridges, stunning architecture, national scenic byways, and more. Explore the “Somerset Scenic Six” / 16 /

To extend your ride, consider a detour to a nearby Frank Lloyd Wright building, including the famed Fallingwater. Additional routes in the Somerset Scenic Six include the Coal Heritage Loop, Pike and Ridge Loop, Mount Davis Loop, Mason Dixon Loop, and Flight 93 Loop. The latter incorporates a stop at the Flight 93 Memorial, including the newly opened Tower of Voices, in honor of those who lost their lives on September 11, 2001. As you make your way east across Pennsylvania, a stop in York County is a must for any motorcycle fan. This area is known for being home to many favorite snack makers and factory tours and is also home to Harley-Davidson. The HarleyDavidson Motor Company’s York Vehicle Operations Plant™ is one of only two manufacturing facilities in the country. It offers a variety of tour options for those

Continuing across Pennsylvania, consider a visit to Bucks County. Nestled in the countryside of Philadelphia, Bucks County is home to quaint towns, including New Hope and Doylestown. Perhaps one of their best-known assets is the historic covered bridges. In total, you’ll find 12 covered bridges along the trail. To make your trip-planning easier than ever, consult the Rt. 6 Motorcycle Itineraries and Maps, organized by the PA Route 6 Alliance. There are five different tours to choose from, each offering unique views along the way. Particularly stunning in the fall months is the PA Wilds East Loop, which offers spectacular views of the Pine Creek Gorge, also known as the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon. You may even spot some elk along your journey! Your itinerary ends with a stop at Cherry Springs State Park, an area recognized as one of the best places in the world for stargazing. This distinction has earned Cherry Springs a Gold Level Dark Sky Park designation from the International Dark Sky Association. Additional routes along Pennsylvania’s Route 6 include the Great Lakes Loop, PA
Wilds West Loop, the Endless Mountains Loop, and the Pocono Mountains Loop. Each of these itineraries covers a unique region of the state and highlights driving directions paired with must-see attractions along the way. Ready to hit the road? There’s no better way to see the season’s brightest colors across Pennsylvania!

carier than the usual hobgoblins around Halloween are the concerns families face when planning a Halloween adventure for the family. With social distancing and facemasks having to be part of the new trick or treating realities, are there ways to celebrate the season this year that offer ideas to responsibly get your GHOUL on? Researching some safe and practical ideas to consider for an October holiday adventure, partners across the state have events, trip ideas, and themed attractions to share.
HAIR-RAISING HISTORY Not only around Halloween but throughout the year, Gettysburg Ghost Tours are one of the most popular things to experience when visiting the site of the Civil War’s bloodiest battles. Led by costumed guides at various places around town and through
battlefields, these tours relay the actual experiences Gettysburg residents have witnessed throughout the years. Folklore and modern-day ghost hunters tell us the spirits of those who fell in the battle continue to wander the region. The Ghosts of Gettysburg Candlelight Walking Tour, Farnsworth House Tours, and Civil War Ghosts tours are a few places offering to give you chills and frights.

Western Pennsylvania offers visitors a “Trail of the Living Dead” popular with zombie fans in tribute to filmmaker George Romero’s classic “Night of the Living Dead.”

While looking for zombies as your drive through Western Pennsylvania during October, you can also check out another annual event that offers chills and thrills in an outdoor setting where social distancing is easy. Almeda Park’s Haunted Trail in Butler County, just north of Pittsburgh, is a fright-filled walk offering scares and shivers as visitors wander through the park’s popular trail system. Being outdoors, you can easily distance yourselves from other trail visitors with the park staff, keeping an eye on safety protocols. While the Haunted Trail offers fun for all ages, strollers and wagons cannot make it through the recreational trail terrain.

For other fun in that area, a Halloween event takes place not far from the park. The Pennsylvania Lumber Museum offers Lantern Tours on October 23-24. This walk provides the right amount of fright for visitors who are led around the property by lamplight to hear ghost stories and eerie tales!
Something less frightful and more in the way of Halloween fun is a fall visit to Roba’s Family Farms, one of Northeastern Pennsylvania’s favorite destinations for fall fun. Families and small groups can reserve individually set picnic areas complete with a fire area to enjoy a picnic on an autumn day. xperience the many trails of Lawrence County; Scenic ATV in underground mines, authentic Amish experiences, craft burgers and ethnic foods as well as wine and brew trails. Follow these readymade trails or create your own adventure with friends and family. Good conversation begins with good food and a great libation. We have you covered on both. Lawrence County is home to wineries and breweries along with places to enjoy hundreds of domestic and imported beer. The scenic beauty includes hiking & biking trails, rivers for fishing kayaking, and canoeing, historic covered bridges and a ruggedly beautiful state park. Two sects of old-order Amish make the sight of horse-drawn buggies on major roads commonplace. You may experience a guided tour deep into the lifestyles of the Amish or travel at your leisure on a self-guided tour. Rich in culture, the county boasts its own ballet company, community theater, genealogical research center, historic museums and art galleries. Restaurants of various ethnic cultures are matchless. Events include antique car shows, art festivals, horse and dog shows, quilt auctions, fairs, a hot air balloon rally and a fireworks festival. With two internationally known fireworks display companies, Lawrence County is the “Fireworks Capital of America.”

here’s plenty of uncertainty to go around these days. But, one thing we can count on is our fair share of cold weather this winter. If you’re anything like me, the mere thought of being cooped up for an entire season is stressful at best. Though summer and fall are my favorite seasons, Pennsylvania provides plenty to enjoy during the winter months. Here are my Top 10 cold-weather activities that will get you outdoors.
1. A winter bonfire is a fun change of pace. Typically this would be top of my list for fall, but a roaring fire, warm cider, and good friends sounds like my favorite new winter tradition.
2. Once the temperatures drop, resorts throughout the PA will begin making snow if mother nature doesn’t provide the real stuff. Skiing and snowboarding are staples of Pennsylvania’s 22 ski resorts. Because I have trouble staying upright on dry surfaces, snow tubing is my go-to adrenalin rush - lots of speed and not far to fall.

3. Who would have thought that dog sledding was a thing in the lower 48? Nemacolin Woodlands Resort in Farmington offers rides that showcase their spectacular property. The trip lasts about one hour and includes a kennel tour. Check out all the wintertime activities available at Nemacolin at nemacolin.com

6. Cross-Country Skiing is a great way to experience our state parks while the tree branches hang heavy with snow. The quiet of the forest after a fresh blanket of snow is something we all need to experience. All the busyness of our daily life seems to fade away as you breathe in the fresh air and peacefulness. Check out dcnr.pa.gov/StateParks to find a state park near you.
5. The Blue Cross RiverRink at Philly’s Penn’s Landing has been a cold-weather tradition for 27 years. The Olympic-sized public ice rink is a winter wonderland oasis in the city. The rink complex features a heated facility, viewing areas, cabins, fire pit areas, public restrooms, and warm food and drinks in the Lodge. Spend the day skating and shopping at the holiday market and the evening enjoying the ambiance of thousands of lights and skating with the Ben Franklin Bridge as your backdrop.
