For a truly unique leaf-peeping experience, hop aboard Steam Into History’s William H. Simpson No. 17, a replica Civil War-era steam engine that runs along the same rails that President Lincoln rode on his way to deliver the Gettysburg Address. Based in New Freedom, the train follows the York County Heritage Rail Trail north to Hanover Junction. Steam Into History’s fall foliage rides begin in mid-October and cover the peak viewing season for the area. Photo by John Gensor
It’s often said that history lives in Philadelphia, and fall is the ideal time to visit the city that helped stir a revolution and shape a nation.

Rickett’s Glen State Park encompasses more than 13,000 acres in Luzerne, Sullivan, and Columbia counties. Tuscarora Falls is one of 22 named falls within the park. It is a 47-foot twotiered fall. The tallest of the falls in Rickett’s Glen, Ganoga Falls, at 94 feet, is located a half-mile upstream from Tuscarora Falls.
This treasure in Lycoming County consists of 867 acres of private land available to the public yearround. Hiking, trail running, and mountain biking are just a few of the activities available thanks to the park’s namesake, Thomas J. Rider, who gifted the land. Photo by Lycoming County Visitors Bureau
Known for its dark skies, Cherry Springs Park attracts stargazers from around the world to get a glimpse of the Milky Way in the night sky. But the daytime views are just as spectacular during peak foliage season in early to mid-October. Photo courtesy of Visit Potter Tioga
McConnells Mill State Park is located in Lawrence County and more than 2,500 acres of the Slippery Rock Creek Gorge, a National Natural Landmark. The 1800s covered bridge (shown) and historic gristmill are popular destinations for shutterbugs. Photo by Michael Fornataro
Bucks County is known for its lovely landscape, historic covered bridges, and iconic stone structures. This stone barn is an example of the colonial craftsmanship that went into these structures, many of which date back to the 18th century.
There are many spectacular vistas of Pine Creek Gorge (Pennsylvania Grand Canyon). This view of fog in the gorge was taken from the Pine Creek Trail at Tiadaghton, Tioga County. Photo courtesy of Visit Potter Tioga

Over the last few years, visitors across Pennsylvania have discovered a wide variety of food and wine attractions marketing themselves by highlighting locally produced, unique and regionally specific foods and beverages. The popularity of farm-to-table restaurants and the curiosity of visitors to experience locally produced culinary products from their source are attracting a growing number of visitors looking to experience the creative and diverse tastes these destinations produce. Currently riding the crest of interest in cleaner and more authentic dining, the Brewed Food market is attracting the attention of visitors drawn to the unique breweries, microbreweries, ale houses and restaurants where they can sample and savor local beers, la-
gers, ciders and ales. The River Rat Brew Trail, a group of 12 breweries and microbreweries located in the small towns populating the regions surrounding the Susquehanna River between Danville and Berwick, is a destination that fans of craft beverages will want to explore. Named to honor the spirited original settlers of the farmlands of the Susquehanna River Valley, the River Rat Brew Trail celebrates the pride, labor and craftsmanship that the residents of Columbia, Montour, Northumberland, Snyder and Union counties have historically poured into their work. This commitment to craft and skill is evident in the wide variety of product and creativity waiting to be discovered by visitors along the trail. Starting on the north end of the River

Rat Brew Trail, Berwick Brewing prides itself on being the oldest operating brew pub in Columbia County. At the brew pub, which features 25 draft beers on tap, guests can enjoy a selection on the company’s deck or at the popular Bier Garten overlooking the Susquehanna River. The beer at Berwick Brewing is crafted traditionally with many ingredients imported from Germany. In addition to its popular pizza, visitors to the brewery can expect a diverse menu, as well as live music on weekends. Home brewers will want to add Turkey Hill Brewing Company in Bloomsburg as a “must” on the second and fourth Tuesdays of every month, when head brewer Donny Abraczinskas hosts regular “Meet the Brewer” events. Operating
out of an 1839 bank barn, the historic setting makes Turkey Hill a unique destination unto itself. Offering a comprehensive menu featuring comfort foods, entrees and bar fare, Turkey Hill is a popular Bloomsburg dinner destination. Continuing south, Rusty Rail Brewing Co. in Mifflinburg is a stop that fans of interesting architecture will want to experience. The brewery is housed in a threestory former brick factory built in the early part of the last century. The building’s exposed walls and “factory feel” blend elements of the past and present to create an eclectic atmosphere where visitors will experience delicious food and great weekend entertainment while enjoying craft brewed beverages.
Marzoni’s Brick Oven & Brewing Company in the town of Selinsgrove is a spot where visitors will savor the finest in brick-oven Italian cuisine as well as the hand-crafted brews, lagers and ales, making this a popular stop for beer fans as well as families looking for a great meal. Regulars will tell you that Marzoni’s relaxed atmosphere is ideal to kick back with a great meal and a cold beverage. In addition to these stops, eight other wonderful breweries along the River Rat Brew Trail are waiting to welMarzoni’s Brick Oven & Brewing Co. come visitors taking a “Microbrew Trail Crawl” or enjoying a getaway to the region for fall foliage, Knoebel’s Amusement Resort or the Bloomsburg Fair in September. Marley’s Brewery & Grille in Bloomsburg; Danville’s Old Forge Brewing Company and Rock God Brewing Company; Three Beards Brewing in Sunbury; the Covered Bridge Brew Haus in Shamokin; West Branch Craft Brewing at the Bull Run Tap House and Civil War Cider Company, both in Lewisburg; and Selin’s Grove Brewing in Selinsgrove round out the list of stops partnering with one another to promote the trail as a Brewed Food destination. Staff at all the breweries are happy to answer questions and teach guests about the process of creating the region’s popular craft brew products. Thinking a brew trail might not be age appropriate for children? Stops like Old Forge Brewing Company create root beer and the distinctly Pennsylvanian white birch beer as part of their menu. The River Rat Brew Trail website, www.riverratbrewtrail.com, offers visitors a map as well as individual listings of each of the breweries. The events schedule can direct visitors to regional festivals where the breweries of the River Rat Brew Trail will be participating to share their distinctly homegrown and time-honored classic brews with fans. THE MUSEUM OF THE
American Revolution written by CARA O’DONNELL
If your childhood was anything like mine, you spent junior high field trips scouring the fields and peeking inside the log cabins of Valley Forge or standing in line to view Independence Hall. Students on field trips, as well as millions of visitors from around the globe, still do that to this day. But, while these places focus their educational experience on the negotiations, the battles, and the points of view that ultimately shaped the nation’s history, the new Museum of the American Revolution paints a slightly different picture. This museum showcases the hardships and the plights of the young soldiers and idealists who became the Revolutionaries. It looks beyond the history books at the sheer desperation that led Colonists, many without military training, to take up arms against the British and begin their fight for independence.
One of the most dramatic portions of the museum is Gen. George Washington’s Headquarters Tent, which served as his office and sleeping quarters throughout the Revolutionary War, including during the harsh winter at Valley Forge. Called “the first Oval Office” by some historians, the tent was eventually acquired by Martha Washington’s grandson, George Washington Parke Custis, and was stored at his Virginia estate, Arlington House, until it was seized by federal troops at the start of the Civil War. It remained in federal possession for 40 years before it was returned to the family and eventually put up for sale, where it was purchased by an Episcopal minister as the first acquisition toward a collection to tell the story of the nation’s founding. A century later, that collection is now the Museum of the American Revolution.

Gen. George Washington’s Headquarters Tent, called “the first Oval Office,” is a cornerstone of the museum.
The museum features several thousand Revolutionary-era artifacts, including weapons, art, and personal items, all of which were once the collection of that Episcopal minister from the Valley Forge area. On display is Washington’s own 13-star flag, known as the Commander-in-Chief’s Standard, which once was used to mark Washington’s presence on and off the battlefield. There are soldiers’ canteens and other drinking vessels and a Minuteman’s musket. Also on display is the first newspaper printing of the Declaration of Independence in the Pennsylvania Evening Post. These and other artifacts help tell the story of the aspirations of liberty that led to the American Revolution. But there is another aspect to the museum. Here, visitors have the chance to immerse themselves in the experiences of the era and learn the personal struggles and strife of the men and women who would become the Revolutionaries. The two-story Liberty Tree, a replica of the tree where Colonists first gathered to organize a revolt against the British, lets visitors
share the experience that Colonists had so many years ago. The Battlefield Theater allows visitors to get a feel for what it was like on the front lines of the Continental Army as it faced an attack by British soldiers. There is even a replica of an 18th-century privateer ship. One important story of the American Revolution is some Revolutionaries’ desire to end slavery. While some may think that effort began just prior to the Civil War many years later, it was a motivator for many during the American Revolution as well. Throughout the Museum of the American Revolution, visitors can learn more about this story. In one gallery, an interactive touchscreen allows visitors to explore the different experiences of enslaved African-Americans in Virginia in 1781 as they sought different paths to freedom. There are personal items as well, from a set of slave shackles so small they most likely were meant for a child to a pair of earrings that once belonged to an enslaved woman working at George Washington’s Mount Vernon estate.
Guests use interactive experiences to learn more about the path to freedom for enslaved African-Americans.

The dramatic story of America’s founding is not a new one for Philadelphia. Neighboring sites ranging from the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall to Ben Franklin’s home and the National Constitution Center have interpreted the actions of that time for years. However, the addition of the Museum of the American Revolution helps visitors explore a more complete, more personal side of the events that led to the nation’s independence. The thousands of artifacts and interactive experiences bring to life the people and ideas that helped to create that independence and showcase how the actions and ideals of years ago are still relevant today. At the conclusion
of the visit, visitors are asked to reflect of their new knowledge of the struggle for democracy and the continuing relevance of the themes of liberty and equality. The Museum of the American Revolution is located at 101 S. Third St., Philadelphia. The museum is open daily with the exception of Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Day. Admission is $19 for adults; $17 for seniors, as well as college students and active/retired military with ID; and $12 for children age 6 and up. Children age 5 and under are admitted free. 2017 Ligonier Highland Games by Cara O’Donnell
S e R t f t h
It’s not unusual to be reminded of the Scottish countryside when looking across the valleys of Pennsylvania’s Laurel Highlands. After all, the lush fields of green, the woodlands, and the quaint homes scattered amongst miles of fields are all reminiscent of Scotland. It’s no wonder many Scots who first immigrated here chose the Laurel Highlands, with Scottish regiments taking part in the construction of Fort Ligonier. The similarities between the re-
gion and the Scottish Highlands are striking, and they are celebrated every year with the festive Ligonier Highland Games, which provides a day of music, competition and flair. This year, the 59th annual Ligonier Highland Games will take center stage on Saturday, Sept. 23, at Idlewild Park, and as many as 7,000 people from all over the United States and beyond will be there to celebrate.
a G A l o e p e t s n S a c i o o h t
“The Highland Games help to keep Scottish traditions and culture alive and educate younger generations,” explained Richard Wonderly, executive director of the Ligonier Highland Games. “It’s truly a family tradition – I’ve heard from both participants and audience members about how they’ve been coming year after year.” Originally known as the Scottish picnic at Kennywood Park, the Ligonier Highland Games has flourished for nearly 60 years. A traditional centerpiece of every Highland Games throughout history is a series of athletic competitions, and the Ligonier event is no exception. In addition to the preregistered athletes competing in everything from the caber toss (the competition involving throwing a heavy log) to the sheaf toss and stone put, even the most novice of visitors can discover their inner Scottish warrior and take part. There’s a tug-of-war and a Kilted Run. And, of course, visitors always have fun taking part in the popular Ladies’ Haggis Toss, based on the legend that women would stand on one side of the River Dromach and hurl haggis luncheons to their husbands on the other side. The Ligonier Highland Games is also
the place to go for those who have ever had questions about researching Scottish ancestry. There will be genealogy sessions, weaving demonstrations and lessons on finding the correct tartans for specific Scottish Clans. The Scots have Fallingwater become a part of so many nations and Photo courtesy of cultures since they were driven from the Pennsylvania Highlands years ago,Western organizers noted, saying that just stopping by Conswervancy the Scottish Clans area to see the different clans and tartans is an excellent way to see how diverse the Scottish culture has become. And the music! Visitors can expect the familiar sounds of bagpipes from the moment they arrive at the Highland Games, but we’re not just talking about the ceremonial tunes often heard at parades and ceremonies. The Ligonier Highland Games brings some of the most skilled pipers in the world to the Laurel Highlands. Guests will hear music ranging from piobaireachd (pronounced “pea-brook”), the classical music of the Great Highland Bagpipe, to the hornpipe and jig, which is derived from traditional dance music that originated on Royal Navy ships and in English folk dance. Other stages will highlight performances from traditional
Celtic harpists and Scottish fiddlers, as well as performances from the prestigious Southminster Ringers of Pittsburgh, who have toured Europe, performing with bells in synchronized and complex melodies. A true hidden gem of the Ligonier Highland Games, it is really a sight to see. No festival is complete without an array of traditional foods, and the Ligonier Highland Games does not disappoint there either. Traditional Scottish pastries and other delights will be on hand, and locally based Jamison Farms will provide lamb burgers and other savory snacks. And since Idlewild is a picnic park, guests are always welcome to bring their own food. But, of course, the cutest of all of the exhibits at the Games will be the one with the other Scots … the four-legged variety, to be exact. From Scottish terriers to Westies and more, two pavilions will be
dedicated to showcasing various Scottish dog breeds and their skills in obedience and agility. There will even be a Scottie steeplechase! Richard Wonderly says the Ligonier Highland Games, known as one of the largest and most comprehensive festivals of its kind, offers a great opportunity to “come and feel what it is to be Scottish for a day.” He explained that the Scots are a people who have spread throughout the world and become integrated into many different nations and cultures and that this festival is the ideal chance to “see and experience the art, music, language, food, clothing, traditional activities and heritage of an enduring and ancient culture that can bring a smile to anyone’s face with the open and welcoming attitude of the people.” The Ligonier Highland Games will take place rain or shine on Saturday, Sept. 23, at Idlewild Park on Route 30 in Ligonier. Gates will open at 8 a.m. Tickets at the gate will be $20 for adults, $18 for seniors, $10 for teenagers and free for children age 12 and under. Parking is complimentary. Visitors may order discounted tickets at a reduced rate at www.ligonierhighlandgames.org.
