T
he pandemic has resulted in a significant increase in families who have taken up camping for the first time in 2020. That trend does not seem to be slowing down. In 2020, Scot Ash, general manager of Shady Maple RV in East Earl, PA, saw a 50% increase in sales over 2019, and he said that the majority of those sales involved first-time buyers. “RVing is an alternative way to travel that allows families to social distance while traveling and while camping,” said Ash, who pointed out that campers have their own beds, baths, and cooking and eating facilities traveling with them. “It keeps the family unit together,” said Ash. However, the safety factors and other benefits of camping can be achieved without “glamping,” as RVing is sometimes called. Lancaster County hiking buddies Laura and Jessica Zimmerman do not hesitate to hit the trail for as long as 10 days with up to 35 pounds of clothes, food, water and other supplies,
including a tent, on their backs. They can cover as much as 10 miles per day, and they have camped in places like the Quehanna Trail in Elk County, the Pine Creek Rail Trail in Tioga County, and Jessica’s favorite, the Black Forest Trail in Lycoming County. The young women often camp well into the fall and as early as April, braving temperatures that can drop into the teens. Laura noted that to keep the food supplies light, they take along a lot of pasta and rice, and they carry dried beef. Laura uses a dehydrator to prepare food ahead for them to take along. Jessica noted that enjoying the journey in nature is a focus of the hiking trips. “When I am out backpacking, it would be a disappointment if I went home without seeing any wildlife,” said Jessica, who notes she is especially on the lookout for rattlesnakes and copperhead snakes, but she has also seen bear, elk, fishers (which are similar to weasels or minks), foxes, coyotes, elk, deer, and flying squirrels. “You didn’t mention porcupines,” added Laura.
Let’s Go Camping! By Ann Mead Ash
Jessica relayed that during a hike through Harvey Winter State Park, a bear foraged ahead of them, continually stopping to look back before disappearing into the brush. She also recalled stepping on a rattlesnake on the Quehanna Trail. Because it was early morning and cold, the snake was sluggish. Kim Pierce and her husband, Gene, graduated from a tent to a hybrid camper a few years ago, but she still prefers cooking over an outdoor fire to using the stove in her camper. The couple’s first date was a backpacking outing on the Presidential Range in New Hampshire. “(After) we had a family, we camped at state parks in tents,” said Kim, who noted she loves her hybrid because the canvas reminds her of tenting.
Kim honed her campfire skills when she did an internship at Yellowstone and worked as a park ranger in Caledonia State Park in Franklin County. She was introduced to a book called “Roughing It Easy” by Diane Thomas, where she learned how to make a stove from a tuna can, corrugated paper, and paraffin and to cook eggs and bacon in a paper sack. “You can cook cheaply over the fire,” said Kim, who currently cooks meals in foil pouches and mixes up pancake batter before leaving home so it’s ready to pour at the campsite. “We make breakfast burritos, so we don’t need utensils,” said Kim, who noted that the smoky smell of a campfire is a delight to her. “There’s something about … being in the outdoors and smelling the fire,” she said. “I like the smell.”
“There’s something about being outdoors and smelling the fire...”
Steve Loewen bought his “toy hauler” camper several years ago and converted the area where motorcycles would be stored into a bed. His wheelchair glides easily up the ramp originally intended for all-terrain vehicles. “I’m not your regular camper,” said Loewen. “I go camping because … I have all my (equipment) with me.” Loewen noted that 90% of his camping expeditions are tied to his love of car racing. He also enjoys the relationships he has developed with other race fans. “I see the same people every year, because we reserve the same (camp sites).” For those who are not sure tent camping is for them, many RV dealers and campgrounds offer rentals.

Outdoor Adventures at By Wendy Royal
With more families looking for vacation destinations with outdoor amenities, a haven tucked away in the woods of northwestern Lancaster County checks all the boxes. Refreshing Mountain Retreat and Adventure Center was founded in 1983 by Marlin and Sharon Harnish to provide a retreat for families to get away, reconnect and refresh. In the early days, accommodations consisted of bunkhouses. Today, in addition to the bunkhouses, families can choose from individual cabins or hotel rooms in the lodge. The spacious family cabins sleep 6 to 8 and include a full kitchen, a living room, two bedrooms, and a bathroom. Hotel rooms sleep 4 to 6 people with access to the retreat’s large dining hall, which includes the use of a toaster oven, microwave, coffee maker, and refrigerator. Although you won’t find TVs at the retreat, free Wi-Fi access is available throughout the property. Besides, who needs a TV when the best entertainment is outside?
Fly Like A Superhero Refreshing Mountain Retreat and Adventure Center has three zipline courses from which to choose. The lines vary in length from 300 to 800 feet. The premier course is the Aerial Excursion Course, which includes seven
ziplines, three sky bridges, and a 40foot controlled rappel.
It’s The Climb Guests can try their skills on the 40foot climbing tower with routes and racing lanes. If you were the type of kid who tried to swing higher than anyone else in the playground, the giant 35-foot pendulum swing is for you. RMC offers a Climbing Tower and Giant Swing bundle.
Elevated Obstacles Why Not? The high ropes course at Refreshing Mountain takes approximately an hour to complete and challenges
s at REFRESHING MOUNTAI MOUNTAIN N
guests with 22 different obstacles. Scared of heights? Don’t look down! There is also a low ropes course for younger guests.
Wildlife Experience Animal specialists guide visitors as they get an upclose, in-person look at reptiles and amphibians from throughout the world, with the focus on species native to Pennsylvania. The newest addition to the Wildlife Center is the Birds of Prey exhibit featuring PA native owls and hawks. The Wildlife Center incorporates the nature trails
zoo. Visitors will learn about the animals’ care and characteristics while having the opportunity to pet, groom, and feed them. Pony rides are available to younger guests.
INDOOR ACTIVITIES and pond, so guests get a better understanding of the wildlife habitat. Also on the property is an archery range, hiking trails, and sand volleyball, in addition to the retreat’s large community pool. Guests can grab a snack at the 319 Café and Gift Shop. The cafe is open with a menu including paninis, beverages, and ice cream during the summer season. The Farm at Refreshing Mountain is more than just a traditional petting
RMC has two escape rooms for amateur sleuths who are up for a team challenge. Escape Room - Funding The Dream is rated easy to medium difficulty and takes approximately one hour to complete. In this challenge, you are a 1950s inventor trying to get through the red tape of the patent office. Escape Room - Circle T Ranch pays homage to the horse ranch that preceded Refreshing Mountain on the property. Locate the hidden clues that will help your family navigate through the chaos of restoring a rundown horse ranch. Parts of this escape room storyline are based on actual events in RMC history. This challenge is deemed medium to difficult. A third escape room is planned for 2021. The two full-size gyms are a favorite of the large groups that visit RMC each year. Basketball, indoor soccer, street hockey, and volleyball are just some team sports that guests can play. Because Refreshing Mountain Retreat and Adventure Center hosts large groups ranging from 20 to 400 throughout the year, several meeting and conference spaces are available on site.
To ensure you have a fantastic stay, with safety in mind, the staff at RMC has enhanced sanitation procedures in place around the property, including hand sanitizer stations throughout the grounds. What began as the Harnish family’s desire to provide a place of retreat for families continues as the second generation of Harnishes is very involved in making sure the RMC carries on the mission.
If You Go: Refreshing Mountain Retreat And Adventure Center

Adventures Nearby: Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area is less than ten minutes away from Refreshing Mountain. Here you’ll find miles of trails on protected land surrounding a beautiful 360-acre lake. The lake is a favorite stop along the waterfowl migration route which can attract more than 200,000 snow geese, tundra swans, and Canadian geese in late winter and early spring. Canoeing and kayaking is permitted on the lake during warm-weather months.

Seaport Museum to Mark Centennial of Return of
UNKNOWN SOLDIER
By Rick Hiduk

Throughout the coming year, the latter will be the focus of 100th anniversary celebrations at the Independence Seaport Museum (ISM) in Philadelphia where Olympia has been docked since 1922. ISM took stewardship of the vessel in the mid 1990s. History aside, visitors to the ship are often amazed by the size of the boat and the variety of decks, rooms and stations aboard.

“I think of it as a floating city for how advanced it was for its time. There was a surgery room, a dentist, and a library,” said Alexis Furlong, ISM director of marketing and communications. “When you go on board, you feel like you are on a city. You don’t really expect it to have so many amenities being from the 1890s.”

he Cruiser Olympia was surely a champion of America’s naval fleet almost as soon as it was launched in 1895 as it was one of the largest steel-hull battleships on the waves. Her 26-year career was flanked by two especially historic events: serving as the flagship for the Battle of Manila in 1898 during which the Spanish fleet there was destroyed and carrying the famous American Unknown Soldier from World War I from France to the naval base at Washington, D.C., in 1921.

as a state-of-the-art man of war. When visitors were able to board and explore the 344-by-53-foot vessel during less restricted phases of the pandemic, they walked the decks and explored the hull traversed for decades by thousands of sailors aiding in the protection of America and her allies. Olympia was chosen for transport due in large part to her early fame, as well as the fact that a coal-burning ship was more economical and convenient than an oil-burning battleship. She made one trip back to the United States, stopping in Melville, RI, before leaving on Oct. 3, 1921, on her way to A family walks the decks of the Le Havre, France, with a Olympia last summer, soaking up stop in Plymouth, Engthe history of the famous vessel. land, along the way.
This year, ISM will commission a new marker to show where the shipping container holding the sacred remains of the Unknown Soldier were lashed to the deck. The small doorways of the ship prevented the sarcophagus from being stored below deck as was intended. Its placement topside, below the after-signal bridge, is just one peculiar element that made the arduous 16-day journey home even more challenging. According to Furlong, Olympia was finishing up a tour in Italy when she was selected for the trans-

Olympia left France on Oct. 25 with a full crew and a special Marine Detachment unit charged with securing and protecting the container bearing the body. Ten days into the journey, the crew had to crisscross 20- to 30-foot waves from the remnants of a pair of hurricanes that had ravaged Tampa Bay, FL, some days prior. hether it’s eat-in or take-out, we can all agree that a fat juicy burger is as Americana as it gets. One might even say that it’s our patriotic duty to make sure that hamburgers are part of our diet. That’s probably stretching it, but I’m confident that the 15 restaurants participating in the Lawrence County Burger Trail would agree. Besides the fact that the burger trail offers unique takes on the
