PENNSYLVANIA'S TRAVEL GUIDE

just a few thoughts

Y

ou’ll find an abundance of unique things to do in this issue of Where & When Pennsylvania - from quirky events like Blobfest in Phoenixville to the historic 156th Reenactment of the Battle of Gettysburg. Newer events like the Eliot Ness Fest in Coudersport and the Citadel Country Spirit USA music festival in Glenmoore will be back after very successful inaugural events last year. The great thing about PA is that there is so much going on all the time, but you don’t need a special event to plan a getaway in our great state. The commonwealth is blessed with 121 state parks and 26 national park sites. How many have you visited? Me? I still have plenty on my bucket list. According to the US Travel Association, Americans leave more than 700 million vacation days unused. Those days represent many lifetime memories that were never made. With demanding work schedules and tight budgets, it can be a challenge to schedule time to get away. But I’m here to tell you that you can. Throughout the summer, we’ll be featuring affordable getaways in Pennsylvania, as well as some day-trip ideas where the only cost is gas for the car. You’ll be able to see them on whereandwhen.com beginning in May. So let’s agree to make a splash at a water park and take some scenic routes. In Pennsylvania, they’re everywhere.

A SHOWCASE BICYCLE ADVENTURE BY KAREN BROOKS It was a chilly October morning in the picturesque town of Lewisburg. After the alarm went off way too early, my friend Naomi and I hustled to grab breakfast at the hotel and navigate to the start of the day’s adventure. We knew we were getting close when we began seeing other cars with bikes perched on top. Our nervous excitement grew as we pulled up to The Miller Center and saw groups of cyclists gathered in an array of colorful jerseys, checking bikes and gear. I knew from studying the registration list that some famously fast people would be here. But the starting atmosphere was relaxed and friendly, putting us at ease about what was in store for the day. unPAved of the Susquehanna River Valley is a new entry into the growing world of bike rides and races held on gravel roads. This event can properly

be called a race, with timing chips and awards and some top pro cyclists lining up to start, but many participants (my friend and I included) opted to treat it simply as a ride—a fun day exploring some of the best gravel roads the state of Pennsylvania has to offer,

with a clearly marked course so we wouldn’t get lost, aid stations offering refreshments, and 600 or so other bike riders for camaraderie. If we felt like challenging ourselves or dueling with some of our fellow riders, we could, or we could simply kick back and enjoy the scenery. “Gravel grinder” bike events such asphoto this, held on lesser-traveled, unimcourtesy of ARCA

proved back roads, offer a way to ride closer to nature and without the hassle of car traffic, but also without the emphasis on bike handling skill that mountain biking can require. The unPAved’s “Raw Road” courses are made up of a mix of gravel roads, some pavement, and short lengths of trail that are sometimes challenging but never over the top. The surfaces are

generally smooth and friendly to gravel bikes (a type of road bike with fatter tires than those strictly for pavement). Mike Kuhn and Dave Pryor, the unPAved organizers, have a lot of experience hosting fantastic bike events, such as the Trans-Sylvania Mountain Bike Epic stage race in State College and the 2013 Singlespeed Cyclocross World Championships in Philadelphia. For this event, Pryor said, “The wide variety of ‘gravel’ makes things fun, and the roads themselves can be anything from near rock-solid to dirt-paths with craters for puddles. The hills are big, but not super-steep, and are awfully scenic with great vistas at the top of many of them.”

For 2019, there will be four course options to choose from: Full (120 miles), Plenty (90 miles), Half (54 miles), and a beginner-friendly option, FUNpaved (30 miles). All the routes begin and end with a few miles on the Buffalo Valley Rail Trail, a safe way to exit the town and a good chance to warm up the legs. The longer routes cover an impressive elevation profile and include some tougher bits of trail. Most of the gravel roads traverse the lush woods of Bald Eagle State Forest and Poe Paddy State Park, following sheltered creeks and climbing up ridges to offer beautiful views. The shorter paved sections travel through scenic rural areas with cornfields and Amish farmhouses. My ride last year on the Plenty route had some epic climbs, fun and twisty descents, and a little bit of narrow singletrack trail to sharpen the senses. It was fun to see the Full route racers go past (much faster than I) where our courses converged and note who was currently leading while enjoying a second helping of potato chips. I enjoyed several interesting conversations with people whose paces happened to match mine while we made our way up the longer climbs. Naomi completed the Half route and was able to stop often to take photos. All in all, it was a perfect mix and made for a fun day. Besides bike riding, there is a lot to do during the unPAved weekend, set this year for Saturday through Monday, Oct. 12 to 14. New for this year, Lewisburg will be reviving its Fall Festival on the Saturday before the race, featuring local food and beer vendors,

live bands, a bike rodeo, social bike rides, activities for kids hosted by the Lewisburg Children’s Museum (including fun stuff like a “Wooly Worm Winphoto courtesy of PAGO ter Prognostication”), and more. To kick things off on Friday evening, there will be a “Get un(G)ravelled Pub Crawl” through the town. The finish line will be livened up with a “DONEpaved Party” featuring finish awards with food provided by The Miller Center’s Cornerstone Kitchen and refreshments by Rusty Rail Brewing Company. For activities and relaxation outside the event, the host town of Lewisburg is a gem with plenty to offer. Situated next to the West Branch of the Susquehanna River, it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and shows off charming architecture and a pleasant smalltown atmosphere. Bucknell University is located here, photo by Dennis Keyes so it’s also a college town with plenty of entertainment, such as the gorgeous Art Deco Campus Theatre. Market Street features many

unique shops and restaurants. At the center of town, the Lewisburg Hotel is an elegant Victorian haven with a top-notch restaurant and bar. The main event will happen on Sunday, Oct. 13. If you are thinking about checking out unPAved, don’t wait! Last year’s event sold out, and while the participant cap has been increased for 2019, word is also spreading about how much fun this ride is. Go to unpavedpennsylvania.com to find out more and register.

The Miller Center

Below: Riders for the 120-mile route depart from The Miller Center just after sunrise.

The start and finish of unPAved happens at The Miller Center for Recreation and Wellness in downtown Lewisburg. This community athletic facility had its grand opening in 2018 and proved to be the perfect host venue. “It’s pretty amazing that the Miller Center was being built as Mike (Kuhn) and I were building unPAved,” said event organizer Dave Pryor. “We were originally planning on a downtown start and finish, but then Andrew Miller of the Susquehanna River Valley Visitors Bureau said, ‘There’s a fitness and recreation facility under construction right at the start of the Buffalo Valley Rail Trail. You should check it out.’ We are so glad he thought of it.” The Miller family has a long history in manufacturing in the region, most notably in playground equipment. When the family members decided that a recreational center would be a perfect way to give back, they went all out in planning and design to create a community hub. Drew Kelly, director of sales, communications, and marketing for the center, said that the Millers “pictured a facility where the whole family could spend time, interact with one another, and have something to do.” The center includes a state-of-the-art fitness center with expert-led classes, courts for various ball sports with equipment rental, a walking/running track, drop-in child care and kid-focused programs, and lots more. During unPAved weekend, The Miller Center will do its best to welcome out-oftowners and community members alike, with special programs including discounted day passes and “Kids in Action” day care. The center will also host the “DONEpaved” finish-line party, with food from its Cornerstone Kitchen and beverages from local Rusty Rail Brewing Company. The Cornerstone Kitchen will be open all weekend, as well, offering a healthy and convenient place to grab a bite.

From the sky, the mountains of central Pennsylvania look as if their layout was scribbled by an exuberant child. The long expanses of trees on ridgetops zigzag northeast and southwest, separating long, narrow valleys strewn with small farms and communities. Just east from the distinctive serpent shape of Raystown Lake, there’s a conspicuous break in the Jack’s Mountain ridgeline, a horizontal cut directly across the ridge. Jack’s Narrows, as the water gap is called, is a bottleneck in the great east-west concourse of the state,

the only route in the days before I-76 and I-80. It is here, in the dark confluence of mountains that gave nearby Mount Union its name, that you’ll find Pennsylvania’s Thousand Steps. Besides being a terrific roadside hike, these historic steps represent Pennsylvania’s industrial past and rewilding present. The most prominent feature of the hike is the eponymous sandstone steps, which are nestled so naturally in the fall line that it’s tempting to imagine they grew right out of the mountain that way. The steps ascend

from the gravel culvert on Route 22 to just below the top of the mountain. They wind through fragrant stands of jack pine, a vestige of an industrial past, and provide order in chaotic talus piles as they snake through the pastel-hued rocks. There are actually 1,043 steps in all, and as you huff and puff your way up, you can’t help but wonder: Why are they here? In the early 20th century, the sandstone that comprises the steps generated a small but significant industrial era in Mount Union. Central Pennsylvania’s gift to the industrial

age was its high-quality and accessible natural resources. Virgin timbers grew on uniform mountain ridges, punctuated by glacial floes of sandstone, streaming from the tops of ridges like their icy counterparts. The rocks, themselves evidence of an ancient, shallow seabed, lay bleached and broken by millennia of exposure to the elements. Their slow but perpetual motion prevented the growth of any moss, or any vegetation at all, atop the proverbial rolling stone. The natural bleaching removed impurities from the silica and quartzite compo-

The rock is known as ganister, and ganister brick was the choice insulator for steel kilns in the early 1900s. The Lehigh Valley region is nestled among the hills of eastern Pennsylvania and aligns almost perfectly with New York City, which is a two-hour drive east. Easily accessible from other parts of Pennsylvania via Interstates 78 and 476, the Lehigh Valley and its three historic cities sit amongst a mixture of rolling hills and small towns. Home to Easton and Allentown,

the Lehigh Valley has its trifecta of cities rounded out by the official “Christmas City of Bethlehem. However, the region isn’t only popular during the holiday season. The Lehigh Valley also has unique and fun outdoor attractions that make it the perfect destination for families during the dog days of summer. Check out these amazing places to take the family in the warm-weather months.

Dutch Springs, Bethlehem, PA

Dorney Park and Wildwater Kingdom Dorney Park and Wildwater Kingdom features more than 100 rides and attractions spread throughout two parks: a traditional amusement park and a waterpark. One admission price provides access to both, and since they are connected, it makes for an easy

transition from dry rides to water slides. Dorney Park’s Planet Snoopy kiddie area and family-friendly rides like the train and antique carousel will please the tiny tots in the family. Nicely balancing out the tamer attractions are the thrill rides, including a classic wooden coaster, Thunderhawk, and modern steel coasters like the worldfamous Steel Force.

Dorney Park and WIldwater Kingdom

Wildwater Kingdom provides a much-needed break from the summer heat with more than a dozen water slides, a lazy river, and a giant wave pool. For the kiddos, there’s a zerodepth entry pool with plenty of water geysers to add to the fun. Complete your day at the park with some sweet treats, including the classic amusement park staples of funnel cakes topped with hot fudge and strawberries, old-fashioned root beer floats, hand-dipped ice cream, and many meal choices from the Chef’s Grille.

Drive-In Movies

Experience the nostalgia of movies on the big screen without leaving your car. The Lehigh Valley boasts not just one but two historic drive-in movie theaters. Shankweiler’s Drive-In Theatre is located in Orefield, northwest of

Allentown, and has been continuously operating since 1934. This gives it the distinction of being America’s oldest drive-in. Double features are the norm, and purchasing one ticket will cover both movies. Shankweiler’s is open weekends in April, May, and September and each evening in June, July, and August through Labor Day. Becky’s Drive-In Theatre is located north of Allentown in the small borough of Walnutport. On Friday and Saturday nights during the summer, a family-oriented movie lineup is ac-

y e t , r n ,

companied by pony rides for the kids before the main movie event begins. Bring a blanket and enjoy a night under the stars or stay in your car for the authentic drive-in movie experience. One tip for visiting these classic pieces of Americana is to arrive early on busy Saturday evenings. Cars are known to start pulling into parking spots up to three hours early to pursue perfect viewing angles in prime locations. Use the extra time before the movie to grab some popcorn or some more “exotic” movie foods such as the turkey barbecue or chili dogs that Shankweiler’s offers at its full snack bar.

Dutch Springs

Known for its world-class scuba diving in a 50-acre spring-fed lake, Dutch Springs is also the home of an Aqua Park, which includes a Wibit course. Wibit is an inflatable obstacle course floating on top of the lake’s surface; think bounce house on water, except much slipperier! This sometimes intense, challenging Wibit course experience makes Dutch Springs a fun destination for families with older children. Life jackets are required for those who want to take on the challenge of Dutch Springs

climbing, jumping, and crawling their way through the obstacles. At the end, the reward is the 10-foot jump into the lake from the Wibit ActionTower. Other unique lake activities include an in-the-water trampoline and a launch experience called “The Blob,” which propels brave swimmers a dozen feet in the air before landing them in the cool lake. When guests take a break from the action-packed fun in the water, Dutch Spring’s atmosphere encourages them to stay for the day, as most visitors bring blankets and tents to set up on the grassy hill overlooking the lake. More adventure awaits, as there’s also a high ropes course and a two-story rock climbing wall. Those needing a break from the many engaging activities can find refreshments at Splash’s Snack Shack, which serves pizza, subs, salads, and much more.

Lehigh Valley Zoo

Located just north of Allentown is the Lehigh Valley Zoo, which features 300-plus animals representing more than 100 species from around the globe. The zoo sits on 29 acres inside the even larger Trexler Nature Preserve.

Lehigh Valley Zoo

It has a wide variety of animal-viewing opportunities, including paddle boats around Lemur Island, a wagon ride to see the animals, and opportunities to simply walk around the winding pathways that encircle the zoo. Interactive experiences are scheduled throughout the day and include giraffe and penguin feeding, a kangaroo walkabout, and more. Several of the zoo’s animals are considered endangered or threatened, which is in keeping with the mission of the Trexler Nature Preserve, whose founding dates back to an original mission to save North American bison from extinction by providing a place where bison and elk could roam free. The zoo offers a safe and interactive wildlife experience for visitors of every age, who can

get up close and personal with animals from around the world. Whether it’s through a day trip, a weekend getaway, or a weeklong vacation, there are plenty of opportunities to discover the many outdoor attractions that the Lehigh Valley has to offer. Photos by Discover Lehigh Valley

hat better way to cool off in the blazing heat of July than with a crisp, juicy pickle? Four years ago, Pittsburgh gave birth to “Picklesburgh,” a three-day festival dedicated to pickled treats and pickle-inspired cuisine. Since then, Picklesburgh has risen in popularity, and it recently was voted the “Best Specialty Food Festival in America” by the readers of USA Today. This year, on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, July 26, 27, and 28, the Roberto Clemente Bridge, which stretches over the Allegheny River, will fill with food vendors and pickle lovers from all over the region for

the fourth annual Picklesburgh. As Pittsburgh is the home to Heinz, the history of pickles runs deep through the Steel City, according to Leigh White, who is the vice president of marketing and communications at the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership. According to the Heinz Company, founder H.J. Heinz began selling horseradish, pickles, sauerkraut, and vinegar by horse-drawn carriage to stores around Pittsburgh in the late 1860s. Picklesburgh pays homage to the famous company with a giant Heinz pickle balloon at the entrance to greet guests as they funnel onto the bridge.

Pittsburgh’s food scene has risen to national acclaim in recent years, making the city the perfect place to host this specialty food festival. Pittsburgh’s many high-quality chefs eagerly create unique pickleinspired goods or nontraditional pickled items for the festival. “Giving them an opportunity to display this creativity in such a high profile has been fantastic,” White said. The concoctions that the vendors create are fascinating. Pickle juice soda and pickled moonshine, cocktails, and lemonade are just a few of the refreshing

beverages offered by vendors. Savory snacks include bacon-wrapped fried pickles, pickled chicken stuffed pretzels, pickle egg rolls, and pickle popcorn. For dessert, you can expect items like bread and butter pickle sorbet, vanilla ice cream topped with Ritz crackers and pickled cherries, and peanut butter pickle cupcakes. One of the vendors, Grandpa Joe’s Candy Shop, promises a top-secret new item this year. Last year it concocted pickled cotton candy, so this year’s sweet creation should be just as intriguing.
