o here we are. I don’t know about you, but I’m ready to get out and explore - to find new roads. Just turn off the GPS and get lost— coddiwomple for a bit. If you’re not familiar with the term, coddiwomple is an English slang word meaning “to travel in a purposeful manner towards a vague destination.” Last year, I spent a lot of time thinking about where I would vacation when things “open up.” Now, I just want to wander through Pennsylvania. As residents, we too often assume we’ve done everything there is to do here. Not so. Not even close. After the year we’ve had, we deserve to do some exploring. This is our road trip issue, so if you’d rather travel with a little more than just a vague destination in mind, we have some great suggestions for you. From talking to travel professionals throughout the state, I know they are ready to receive visitors and have prepared everything with your safety in mind. While you’re visiting different parts of PA, be sure to share your experience by tagging @whereandwhenPA on social media. We’d love to see where your summer travels take you.

ome of our fondest memories involve the family piling into the car for a summer vacation, singing tunes playing on the car’s radio, making pit stops for snacks and souvenirs, and sharing the fun of sampling the local tourist attractions. After too many months of facial coverings, hand sanitizing, and social distancing, the nostalgic idea of climbing into the car for a summer road trip is exactly what our spirits could use this summer. Here in Pennsylvania, there is hardly a place more perfectly suited for a summer road trip than the amazing Route 6 corridor. If you start in Erie on Route 6, you can drive to its eastern tip in Provincetown, Massachusetts. Here in Pennsylvania, the 9 counties along Pennsylvania’s border with New York state are connected by this scenic route, which serves as the northern tier’s main east-west artery. This grouping of counties features some of Pennsylvania’s most beautiful parks, charming towns, and iconic landmarks to discover. Summer activities and recreational areas that visitors will find in the counties

bookending Route 6 make them perfect destinations to consider when mapping out your summer road trip.

Heading East on Route 6 Scranton to Milford

The largest city on the eastern side of the PA Route 6 is Scranton, whose rich industrial legacy now shares the spotlight with the city’s role as the iconic setting for the television series “The Office.” This blend of history and pop culture makes Scranton a great place to start a summer road trip. Take tours of the Lackawanna Coal Mine, Electric City Trolley Museum,

and Steamtown National Historic Site. If that wasn’t enough adventure, make your way around town on a self-guided “The Office” Tour to discover locations mentioned in the show. (Tip: Be sure to include lunch or dinner at one of the worldfamous Old Forge Pizza restaurants to sample the unique local specialty!) Continue along Route 6 East into the northern Pocono Mountains to spend time visiting Honesdale and Hawley’s eclectic downtowns. In these two mountain towns, great shopping, fabulous food, and local arts events offer fun family options.

Claws ‘N’ Paws Wild Animal Park, the Stourbridge Line Train Excursion, and Dorflinger Glass Museum make for great stops in the region. Hawley is the gateway to the Lake Wallenpaupack region, one of the Poconos’ most popular summer recreation areas. The second largest lake contained within Pennsylvania, Wallenpaupack plays home to shoreline trails, boat launches, and scenic boat tours.

2

Dorflinger Glass Museum is home to one of the nation’s largest collections of more than 1,000 pieces of cut, engraved, etched, gilded, and enameled crystal. On the property of The Dorflinger-Sudham Wildlife Sanctuary, visitors can also enjoy the annual Wildflower Music Festival that takes place on site. Photos by PA Route 6 Tourist Assn.

3 Lake Wallenpaupack is a popular Pocono Mountains destination for boating, swimming, and fishing access all summer. Free boat launch facility for trailered boats is located at Mangan Cove, located off State Route 590.

Driving east, head 4 to the charming town of Milford along the Delaware River for one of the state’s most popular small-town destinations. Arts and antiques shops, popular restaurants, and a vibrant arts community invite visitors to experience what locals treasure. The town is surrounded by a relaxed, pastoral setting, making Milford a pleasure to explore. Tubing or canoeing on Grey Towers National Historic Site, located in Milford, is the ancestral home the Delaware River is a of Gifford Pinchot, first director of the United States Forest Service and 2-time Pennsylvania governor. popular way to cool off and unwind each summer. A day floating along the Delaware River surrounded by the beautiful Pocono Mountains is a fun way to end a multi-day road trip to the eastern side of PA Route 6!

Presque Isle State Park is a 3,200-acre sandy peninsula that reaches out into Lake Erie. Along the beautiful shoreline are 13 beaches which attract many visitors to Pennsylvania’s only “seashore.”

The Erie Maritime Museum, US Brig Niagara, and the Erie Zoo offer historical sights and family fun. Eateries like Sara’s Diner serve up local favorites like Smith’s famous footlong hot dogs, which are part

of the uniquely Erie fare you will want to try when visiting the western side of PA Route 6. Don’t miss the Center of Route 6 Road Trip, which includes the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon, the darkest skies east of the Mississippi and a whole lot more, in the fall issue!

Drive in or walk up – no matter how you get to Sara’s Diner in Erie this summer, bring an appetite! After a day at Lake Erie, Splash Lagoon or exploring area sights, Sara’s menu of local favorites like Orange & Vanilla Twists and Smith’s hot dogs has something to savor on a summer night!

Taste the World While Discovering South Central PA’s Great Outdoors

W

ith global travel limited due to the ongoing pandemic, road trippers can still experience the flavors of the world. South Central Pennsylvania provides a wealth of culture and access to experiences that will open your eyes to the hidden treasures that lie within your community. Enjoy delicious meals at restaurants featuring various international cuisine, or stop at one of Pennsylvania’s best-known markets to enjoy a variety of ethnic and local dishes. Visit extensive biking trails that test your athleticism or provide a perfect leisurely ride with a view. This weekend road trip is ideal for a family or individual to experience the robust cultural offerings of South Central Pennsylvania. Strap your bikes to the SUV and head out on an international culinary adventure.

York Central Market

d We begin our South Central PA Taste of the World Tour at York Central Market. Since its opening in 1888, York Central Market has been a staple of downtown York for over 130 years. With over 50 vendors to choose from, York Central Market offers a variety of flavors and cultures to sample. Try Gigi’s Crepes for a French twist, Global Cafe for a combination of Afro, Caribbean, and Latin flavors, or Mezzogiorno for locallysourced Italian cuisine. After you’ve enjoyed a delicious meal from local vendors and explored the streets of downtown York, unload your bikes and hit the York County Heritage Rail Trail. This bike trail spans 21 miles, perfect for a rigorous bike ride or a stroll through scenic York County. Next, we head to Lancaster County. Stop at Aura Espresso Room on Queen Street in the heart of downtown Lancaster. Fuel up for your next adventure with drink options from the popular Italian espresso brand Lavazza and a fresh-made pastry or chocolate croissant. Founded in 2017 by

York Heritage Trail Photo by Explore York

George Zagas, this European cafe offers a unique flavor amid Lancaster’s restaurant scene, inspired by Zagas’ Greek heritage. While in downtown Lancaster, make sure to visit Lancaster Central Market. Founded in 1730, Lancaster Central Market is one of the oldest farmers markets in the United States. Nestled between Queen Street and Prince Street in downtown Lancaster, Central Market is filled with international food stands and direct access to local fare and fresh-from-thefarm options. Experience Puerto Rican cuisine at Christina’s Criollo or a selection of Middle Eastern food items from Saife’s Middle Eastern Food.

Hawk Rock Overlook

Photo by Visit Hershey & Harrisburg

For a leisurely morning hike, explore all that the Conewago Recreation Trail near Elizabethtown has to offer. The nature of this recreational trail makes it an accessible activity for families and individuals of all skill levels. For those looking to take on a more rigorous challenge, the 18-mile Lebanon Valley Rail Trail access point is available nearby. Continue your day of hiking at the Hawk Rock Overlook in Perry County. This gorgeous hike runs along a portion of the Appalachian Trail and offers points that overlook Sherman Creek and the Susquehanna River. While this is a rocky trail with steep climbs, with a good pair of hiking shoes you will have access to breathtaking views. The peak season for hiking Hawk Rock runs from March through October, so expect to see this trail in its full glory. After your hike, make your way to Harrisburg for lunch. Enjoy a meal at Mariama’s African and Jamaican Restaurant. Experience excellent food alongside friendly customer service and an inviting atmosphere. Dine in or take your food togo and visit the Capital Area Greenbelt. The 20-mile stretch of waterfront trails and walkways wraps through and around Pennsylvania’s capital city, providing ample room to picnic and explore.

Bring your South Central PA Taste of the World Tour to a close at Aladdin, a Mediterranean restaurant owned and operated by Alexandre Borkhoche. Located on Penn Avenue in West Reading, Aladdin offers a warm and welcoming atmosphere for its guests. Borkhoche greets his returning customers, some of whom he says come each day to the restaurant. Each dish served at Aladdin is made inhouse, from start to finish, informed by Borkhoche’s Lebanese heritage. Enjoy Aladdin’s shawarma platter options to share with your family or one of the many single dish options. Finish off your meal with fresh-made baklava and Lebanese coffee before heading to the Pagoda for a beautiful view of the sunset. Built in 1908, the

Pagoda, in Reading is an architectural masterpiece, offering light hiking trails and an overlook that allows guests to see for miles. While the Pagoda’s interior is currently closed to the public, the view alone is worth the trip. While we wait for borders to open and travel to become a realistic option, you can continue to support local businesses that bring diverse flavors and cultural experiences to South Central Pennsylvania.

Spend the day browsing the many shops and galleries along Germantown Avenue.

BY CARA O’DONNELL

Let’s face it – we’ve all been cooped up for too long after a year of quarantine. Summer of 2021 is going to be a summer to explore and discover something new. And, of course, some of those treasures are right around the corner here in Pennsylvania. Hit the road and find incredible opportunities that may be just outside the well-known spots we know and love.

Discover the Gems of Philadelphia’s Countryside Begin your weekend the way Philadelphia’s elite did in Colonial days – step outside the bustle of downtown and venture to Chestnut Hill, just 25 minutes from Center City, but full of charm and green space. Germantown Avenue is the “Main Street,” where the cobblestone streets lead you to independent boutiques, galleries, gourmet shops, cozy bistros, and more.

The Chestnut Hill Hotel is central to Chestnut Hill’s activity with its grand 36 rooms and on-site offerings.

At the center is Chestnut Hill Hotel (chestnuthillhotel.com), which has been on this spot since the 1770s and is the place for a romantic stay. The current structure was built in the late 1800s, and it has seen numerous renovations and restorations over the years. Most recently, renovations restored the hotel’s original grandeur. For day 2 of your getaway, be sure to stop by Market at the Fareway (marketatthefareway.com), just steps outside the hotel. Get there early; this historic market features fresh, socially responsible local foods from high-quality artisans, and it’s the ideal spot for supplies for the next part of the day.

Craft beer fans don’t miss Chestnut Hill Brewing Company (chestnuthillbrewingcompany.com) at the hotel - its pizza and beer menu is all local – beer brewed on-site; fresh, local ingredients; and a loyal clientele always willing to share menu favorites. For an evening that’s a bit more exotic, try the seasonal tasting menus The 3,600-acre Valley Forge at nearby Mica National Historical Park offers numerous outdoor activities, (micarestauincluding biking, hiking, runrant.com), a ning, and horseback riding. small BYOB spot that turns local ingredients into incredible dishes. WILDLIFE & WATER PARKS ROAD TRIP TRIP i N WESTER N PA

Photo by Idlewild & SoakZone Hydro Racers are a head-first head rush!

I

f you’re looking for a summer familyfun road trip experience, look no further. This trip combines two outdoor favorites in one fantastic vacation - water parks and wildlife parks. The road trip begins in Jones Mills, Westmoreland County, where you’ll find Living Treasures Wild Animal Park. More than 300 animals and 50 species, ranging from bearded dragons to big cats, live at the park. Guests can get a close-up look at the tigers who are just on the other side of the one-inch-thick glass. Although temporarily suspended due to COVID-19, the 30-minute sloth interaction is a sought-after activity at Living Treasures. Check their website for updates on when this opportunity will return. Conveniently located on the property, Log Cabin Lodge and Suites offers guests a place to stay during their visit. Each room has a rustic, log cabin feel with a fireplace and modern amenities. The suites range from 1 to 6 bedrooms. Lodging guests receive 50% off admission to Living Treasures Wild Animal Park.

IF YOU GO: Address: 288 PA-711, Jones Mills, PA 15646 Phone: 724-593-8300 Web: ltanimalpark.com Just 20 minutes northeast of Jones Mills, you’ll find Idlewild and SoakZone in Ligonier. Idlewild and SoakZone has been named “Best Children’s Park” by Amusement Today and “Best Park for Families” by the National Amusement Park Historical Association. With this type of positive recognition, your family is sure to enjoy the entire park. There’s a water feature for every age, from the relaxing Float Away Bay lazy river to the Hydro Racers slides. The smallest guests will enjoy Captain Kidd’s Adventure Galley, with six slides and dozens of interactive water fun. There is no shortage of fun for older kids and adults at SoakZone. In addition to the hydro racers and the serpentine slides, the Pipeline Plunge features a thrilling 50-foot drop on a two-person

raft before breaking through a curtain of water. The 280,600-gallon Wowabunga family wave pool is a SoakZone favorite! Following a period of calm waters, anticipation builds as the signal sounds, alerting swimmers that a wave is coming. Can you ride the tide? IF YOU GO: Address: 2574 U.S. 30 Ligonier, PA 15658 Phone: 724-238-3666 Web: idlewild.com Approximately one hour west of Ligonier, in West Homestead, you’ll find your next destination, Sandcastle Water Park. Situated along a boardwalk overlooking the Monongahela River near Pittsburgh, the park boasts 15 water slides, a wave pool, a lazy river, and two children’s splash and slide areas. With each twist, turn, and splash, Sandcastle delivers on all cylinders. Adrenaline seekers will love the Lightning Express, where a 60-foot free-fall awaits them. Sandcastle’s newest slide, Dragon’s Den, adds the element of mystery as riders fly through darkness and mist. IF YOU GO: Address: 1000 Sandcastle Drive Pittsburgh, PA 15120 Phone: 412-462-6666 Web: sandcastlewaterpark.com

The next stop is in New Castle, Lawrence County, where we’ll visit Living Treasures Animal Park’s second location. The New Castle location is more extensive than Jones Mills, with 400 animals and 70 species. The pleasant, wooded setting makes visiting during the hot days of summer a comfortable experience. Living Treasure Moraine allows guests to get close to animals with activities which can include holding a baby kangaroo, taking a camel ride, and playing with the goats. Throughout the park, you will find signs indicating whether you may feed the animals in that area. The animals are so close that you won’t need binoculars to see tigers, monkeys, kangaroos, and so much more. IF YOU GO: Address: 268 Fox Road New Castle, PA 16101 Phone: 724-924-9571 Web: ltzoo.com Hop in the car and drive roughly 30 minutes northeast to Grove City, Mercer County. The 144-acre interactive adventure park, Keystone Safari, is the newest in Pennsylvania. Visitors can walk through or drive through the animal park. In addition to the park tour, general admission provides access to the giraffe barn, the reindeer barn, and the butterfly garden. Photo by Waldameer & Water World Waldameer & Water World’s Battle of Lake Erie is an amazing complex of interactive water features.

Visitors to Keystone Safari are encouraged to feed many of the animals with park-approved food. Though the animals are free to be out in their exhibit, the big cats and giraffe are moved inside during inclement weather. When you choose the drive-thru safari option, you’re likely to see Guanacos, Bison, Zebras, Bison, Yak, Waterbuck, Highlander Cattle, and much more. The animals are not the only adventure offered at Keystone Safari; the park features two zipline adventure courses - a beginner course for younger children and a more challenging course for adults and older children. IF YOU GO: Address: 2284 Mercer Butler Pike, Grove City, PA 16127 Phone: 724-748-6777 Web: keystonesafari.com Our last stop on the Wildlife and Water Park Road trip is Waldameer Water World in Erie. This park boasts more than 100 attractions, including five rollercoasters, but we’re here for the water!

Thirty-one slides, a giant wave pool, a heated relaxing pool for up to 120 people, and an leisurely river float make this a great way to end our trip! The Battle of Lake Erie is one of the newer additions to the park, with more than 100 water features, including seven slides and a 400-gallon tipping bucket. For a thrill ride, guests will enjoy Raging River, an open slide that features a wild ride for one or two. For fans of enclosed slides, the Liquid Lightning is sure to please as riders twist and turn in near-complete darkness. IF YOU GO: Address: 3100 West Lake Road Erie, PA 16505 Phone: 814-838-3591 Web: waldameer.com You could easily spend a week on this road trip. I gave you five destinations, but there is plenty to see and do along the way.
