It is with great sadness that I sit down to write this, my last letter. In the fall of 2002, I was entrusted to bring W&W into our company’s fold and produce a quality publication that would put Pennsylvania and its people in the spotlight and showcase all the variety of our wonderful state. For nearly 12 years I have been fortunate to travel along with you through 48 issues and to see the integration of W&W’s website and mobile app. The journey has been very rewarding. I have met many interesting and wonderful people along the way. And I’ve had a wonderful team to work with. I thank you for indulging me in my ramblings of things I love: family, home and our beautiful Pennsylvania! My excitement outshines my sadness, however. You will notice a new and fresh look beginning with this issue, and I am pleased to announce that Wendy Royal will be at the helm of W&W’s future. Under her direction and passion, W&W will continue to provide you with fulfilling and rewarding experiences for your soul. Wendy and I will continue to cross paths. Our office doors are literally 12 steps away from each other! We’ll collaborate, share ideas and encourage each other as we look forward to the new opportunities set before us. And I am blessed that my path has crossed with all of you. Quoting an unknown author, “Goodbyes are not forever. Goodbyes are not the end. They simply mean I’ll miss you until we meet again!”

Natural beauty aside, including vast concentrations of state parks, Historic U.S. Route 6 cuts across the top of the state through a series of towns that seem simultaneously vibrant and lost in time. Northern Pennsylvania is also home to Penn State University's Nittany Lions at State College in Centre County. A trip to Tioga County would not be complete without experiencing Pennsylvania’s Grand Canyon, the Pine Creek Gorge. Local outfitters provide equipment and shuttle services, while Mother Nature provides the natural beauty. Just 97 miles to the west is Wellsboro, a charming town in Tioga County that has been retrofitted in recent decades to offer all the necessary modern amenities while retaining a centuries-old charm that serves as a picture-perfect backdrop for any wedding party. The Pennsylvania Grand Canyon, just 15 miles from downtown, is a popular recreation destination for hikers, paddlers, and cyclists who take advantage of the many trails running along the deep gorge hollowed out over the ages by Pine Creek. Professional outfitters provide shuttles and equipment for kayakers and cyclists, or guests can bring their own or rent it in town before laying out their own day trip. The Penn Wells Hotel and Lodge in downtown Wellsboro is a complex of restored buildings that specializes in wedding parties. Wellsboro is certainly a “walking town,” with broad flat sidewalks extending in every direction. The Wellsboro Diner, an authentic porcelain-style diner constructed in 1939, is a literal icon on Main Street, serving home-style food from breakfast through the dinner hour. There is a Bob Evans Restaurant on Jackson Run Road in Warren, and The Log Cabin Inn is a quick 15-minute trip west of town that features fine dining and steak and seafood specialties. In the northwestern part of the state but still considered well within “the wilds” of Pennsylvania are Warren and Warren County, the gateway from the west to the Allegheny National Forest, complemented by the Kinzua Dam, Allegheny Reservoir, and numerous state parks. The former logging frontier reinvented itself in a grand fashion that left it not only lushly reforested but steeped in culture and heritage. Art galleries, antiques shops, and the historic Struthers Library Theatre are some of the highlights awaiting friends and family of the adventurous wedding party that was meant to celebrate off the beaten path. As with most of northern Pennsylvania, recreational opportunities in Warren County abound. Couples may present to their guests the option of camping at one of many private, family-oriented sites or at Chapman State Park, just south of town between Routes 6 and 62. Of course, there are more traditional hotels and guest houses available as well, such as the Hampton Inn & Suites on Market Street and the Holiday Inn at the intersection of Routes 6 and 62. Both also offer extensive golf packages on local courses. One of those is the Blueberry Hill Golf Club, which also offers dining and is located just 13 minutes north of Warren on Cable Hollow Road in Russell. The Struthers Library Theatre on West Third Avenue in Warren was opened in 1883 and “rescued” by the community 100 years later to reestablish it as a classic venue for the arts. Two and a half hours southeast of Warren is State College, which prides itself on being voted the number 13 “most insanely beautiful college” at which one can get married. While a family comprised of die-hard Penn State Nittany Lions fans might instantly consider State College and University Park the perfect place in northern Pennsylvania to exchange vows, the region has much more to offer than its iconic Beaver Stadium and sports programs. The needs of the bridal party and guests can easily be met by any one of many large hotels and numerous restaurants in the area. Venues such as The Penn Stater and the Nittany Lion Inn offer accommodations and catering services that suit big-city tastes, but State College feels much more like a small but bustling town. Nationally and internationally known performers are routinely booked at the Bryce Jordan Center, the Eisenhower Auditorium, and the State Theatre. “The Discovery Space complex in downtown State College is excellent for kids,” Rupert noted. And for adults, there are a growing number of wineries and breweries within a short drive of town. State College remains an active sports town, even during the summer break when the minor league State College Spikes play baseball at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. Golfers can reserve tee times at the Penn State Blue and White courses, as well as at Toftrees Golf Resort and Conference Center just west of town. Tussey Mountain Par Three Golf Course in nearby Boalsburg doubles as a ski resort during the winter months. The more adventurous might opt for hang gliding or a ride in a hot air balloon. Wedding guests who have the time to get out of town for a half-day or more should consider taking the family to DelGrosso's Amusement Park in Tipton, a 40-minute drive southwest on Route 220. Other options for fun that lay just beyond the borders of State College are Penn's Cave, a half-hour east of town, and downtown Bellefonte, with its preserved Victorian architecture, 20 minutes north of town. Bellefonte is also home to the Reynolds Mansion bed-and-breakfast,

which can easily accommodate 20 wedding guests with enough advance notice. A bit closer to State College is the Chatelaine Bed and Breakfast, a restored 1791 farmhouse in Pine Grove Mills. The estate is surrounded by grazing cattle, as well as flocks of turkeys, white-tailed deer and other wildlife. All that activity is bound to build an appetite, and the choices for eateries are seemingly without limit. “There is something for about any taste from American to international flairs,” Rupert remarked. “The diverse makeup of the campus and residents has allowed for this to occur.” Traditional American food can be found downtown at the Olde New York Restaurant, the American Alehouse & Grill, and Bar Bleu, a full-service bar and sports lounge. time when Moses discovers he is not an Egyptian prince. “Being raised in an Egyptian household, he is trying to come to terms with which God (he is) truly going to follow,” explained Wert. Sight & Sound producers and directors have chosen to examine Moses’ decision to leave his life surrounded by royal trappings and do as God asks in all its complexity. “Moses came from an ordinary birth, and he was immediately placed in extraordinary surroundings,” explained Wert. “Then he humbled himself, and went back to who he truly was.” According to Wert, at the point that the main character sings the show stopping “Something Greater Than Me,” Moses has begun to understand the Lord’s faithfulness and how he can be part of God’s plan. “(With Moses), the Lord used somebody ordinary to do extraordinary things in spite of (Moses’) shortcomings and weaknesses,” explained Wert. Wert is excited about the special effects for the show. “In terms of breadth and scope, this is such a big story with so many highlighted moments,” he said. “When you think of (the story of) Moses, you think of the Red Sea parting … and the pillar of re.” Past CDs to accompany Sight and Sound shows have been recorded in Nashville, but the CD for “Moses” will be recorded at Sight and Sound in Lancaster using the original cast. Incongruous. At first look, the deer-shaped sculpture that rises from the remains of the Carrie Furnaces National Historic Landmark in the Rivers of Steel National Heritage Area near Pittsburgh certainly is â&#x20AC;&#x153;strange because of not agreeing with what is usual or expected.â&#x20AC;? Constructed in 1906, the blast furnaces were part of the U.S. Steel Homestead Works, which operated the furnaces until 1979. In its heyday, the workers manning the furnaces could churn out more than 1,000 tons of iron a day. According to Ron Baraff, director of museum and archives, the Carrie Furnaces were named after a relative of the original owners, the Fownes brothers. In the Three Rivers section, for example, Croatian music may be found on the jukebox at Emil’s Restaurant in Rankin, and the Bulgarian National Educational and Cultural Center near the Waterfront shopping area offers 14 varieties of homemade Bulgarian soups and other specialties from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturdays through May. Participants in the National Park Passport Program may have their passports stamped for the Rivers of Steel National Heritage Area and the Potomac Heritage National Scenic Trail at the visitor center in the Bost Building in Homestead. According to www.riversofsteel.com, although built in 1892 as a hotel, the Bost served as the temporary headquarters for the Amalgamated Association of Iron and Steel Workers during the Homestead Lockout and Strike.
