Just a few thoughts...
Whosays you have to leave Pennsylvania to go to the beach? PA beaches may not meet the ocean but instead hug the shoreline of many lakes throughout the state. Lake beaches offer the best of both worlds. For those who love the water and taking in the sun’s vitamin D without the long drive in traffic and wall-to-wall beachgoers, we have you covered. Many are located in state parks where camping is often available.
Fortunately, no matter where you are in the state, you won’t have to drive very far to get to one of our beaches.
Not a beach person?
Summertime is also festival time. Music and art festivals abound during the warm weather months. There’s nothing like sitting in your lawn chair or on a blanket at an outdoor concertand when it takes place at one of PA’s wineries, all the better.
I hope you will find this issue helpful in planning your summer getaways,

The Endless Mountains Gravel Bikepacking
One of the Highlights of the Heritage Region’s 25th Anniversary
By Rick HidukBikepacking is by no means a new sport and recreational activity, but it has enjoyed enormous growth over the past decade, and one of its newest reference points is in Bradford, Sullivan, Susquehanna and Wyoming counties in northeast Pennsylvania. The Endless Mountains Gravel Bikepacking Loop (EMGBL) was several years in the making and unveiled to appreciative recreationists last year. Since then, its immediate popularity has drawn attention to the project from as far away as Canada.
The EMGBL was the brainchild of then-Sullivan County Commissioner Donna Iannone, who is an avid cyclist and a board member of the Endless Mountains Heritage Region (EMHR), which promotes the preservation and enjoyment of heritage assets in the four-county region northwest of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton metro area
and bordering New York state at its northern edge. Project coordinators felt strongly that the EMGBL would appeal to regular bikepackers who are looking for new places to combine their love of cycling and backpacking and introduce other outdoor enthusiasts to the growing phenomenon.
Mountains Bikepacking Loop
“There are many routes and events throughout the country that highlight cycling, some drawing thousands of riders and guests,” Iannone related. “I ride throughout our four-county region and felt that we have as much to offer as any of these other places.”
As the name implies, the terrain of the Endless Mountains Region is mostly mountainous, though the Appalachian topography differs from one county to another. Bradford and Wyoming counties share a similar terrain of high ridges and low, fertile valleys carved by the ancient Susquehanna River. Sullivan County has deep valleys flanked by steep slopes as fashioned over time by the Loyalsock Creek. Susquehanna County is marked by high plateaus that provide unmatched views of neighboring counties and sunsets that last for hours. What they have in common are miles of back roads lined with farms that intersect in quaint villages and vibrant small towns that offer unique amenities.
“Bikepacking trails are highly popular in the western portion of the United States, but you can now take solace in knowing there’s no need to make far-reaching and expensive travel arrangements for your next expedition,” said EMHR executive director Cain Chamberlin. The Endless Mountains are just a three-hour drive from Philadelphia and New York City and five hours from Pittsburgh and Washington, D.C.
“The EMGBL is a prime example of what the heritage region aims to accomplish: connecting residents and visitors with our heritage sites, pastoral landscapes, culture and historic
downtowns through outdoor recreation,” Chamberlin added. Since a soft launch of the EMGBL in 2022, the EMHR was inundated with questions and praise from cyclists exploring the route. “We were also invited to give a presentation about the EMGBL at a cycling tourism conference in Toronto, Ontario,” Chamberlin noted, “so you could say that it’s already received international recognition.”
The EMGBL was the latest in a series of projects coordinated by the EMHR as the organization headed toward its 25th anniversary in 2023. As the official managers of the North Branch Susquehanna River Water Trail, EMHR staff and managers of local outfitters have planned a record number of paddling adventures and sojourns that combine days on the river with overnight camping and heritage-related presentations. The anniversary will culminate in the fall with the first-ever Endless Mountains Outdoor Heritage Expo at the Wyoming
County Fairgrounds near Meshoppen.
The North Branch of the Susquehanna River was recently named 2023 Pennsylvania River of the Year by the Pennsylvania Organization for Watersheds and Rivers (POWR), after having been nominated by the EMHR for an annual online voting contest. The timing couldn’t be better for the EMHR, and prize money from POWR will help to fund some of the river adventures planned. The combined status of the River of the Year title, the EMHR’s anniversary and the growing attention garnered by the EMGBL provides the EMHR a springboard from which the organization can launch a potential bid to become a national heritage region.
The bikepacking loop was designed to accommodate both experts and novices in the sport. The planning departments from each of the four counties offered their GPS-friendly mapping tools to help create a 410-mile trail
that is actually two loops that intersect near Towanda in Bradford County. For naturalists, there are four state parks on the route and numerous state game lands. The EMGBL is also graced with stunning scenic overlooks, museums and historical societies, breweries and
wineries, mom-and-pop shops and eateries running the gamut from diners to high-end restaurants.
Maps accessible at emheritage.org show various lodging opportunities, ranging from hotels and bed-and-breakfasts to family campgrounds and public parks that offer camping sites. The heritage region continues to build on its Bicycle Friendly Business Program to provide repair and charging stations and other services. Cyclists can use the maps and the links attached to them to plan excursions that meet both their abilities and time constraints. There are segments of the loop that can be enjoyed over the course of a few hours, a few days and even a week. With the safety of its users in mind, the mapping expertise provided by the county planners also ensures adequate cellphone coverage in the rural terrain.
To learn more about the Endless Mountains Gravel Bikepacking Loop and additional events associated with the 25th anniversary of the Endless Mountains Heritage Region, log on to emheritage. org. The EMGBL will also be highlighted during the Endless Mountains Outdoor Heritage Expo, which will be held on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 29 and 30.

Every region of Pennsylvania has a food identity. Philly has the cheesesteak. Lancaster County is known for Pennsylvania Dutch cuisine. When you visit the northeast and western parts of PA, you’ll most likely experience the Eastern European influence with foods like pierogies, haluski, and kielbasa. And, perhaps none more recognizable than Hershey’s chocolate legacy.
It was German immigrants who gave the Lebanon Valley its distinctive flavor.
Lebanon Bologna
The star of any charcuterie board, Lebanon Bologna is the food most associated with the Lebanon Valley. You can’t easily compare Lebanon Bologna to other types of bolognas you might find in your neighborhood deli. It has a smoky, rustic flavor profile that comes from time-honored recipes.
Seltzer’s Smokehouse
Meats in Palmyra has been making its bologna for over 120 years. According to Austin Wagoner, CEO and 4th generation of the Seltzer family, their process for making their Lebanon Bologna has changed very little in the last century. Seltzer’s smokemasters wood smoke the bologna in tall wooden smokehouses, creating the distinct flavor for which the Seltzer family is known.
Opera Fudge
Another treat that is a staple of Lebanon is Opera Fudge. Ironically, Opera fudge isn’t fudge at all. And why opera? Some say it was called that because it was sold at the opera during intermission. The confection has a rich, creamy, and sweet vanilla center dipped in chocolate liquor.
Wertz Candies of Lebanon is synonymous with opera fudge. Since 1931, the Wertz family has created sweet treats from their shop on Cumberland Street. They make a variety of handmade chocolate confections, caramels, and popcorn. Earlier this year, the owners of Wertz Candies decided
it was time to retire and put the business up for sale, hoping little would change. As it turns out, the new owners, Rob and Lindsay Wertz, aren’t planning on making many changes. While three generations of Wertz’s owned the business before them, they are not the fourth. Although they share the same last name, the couple is unaware of any relation to the founders.
The fact that both Seltzer’s and Wertz’s have helped define the flavor of the Lebanon Valley hasn’t escaped the head brewer at Snitz Creek Brewery, Ryan Moncarz. The brewery offers Opera Fudge Stoudt, which highlights chocolate and vanilla, while Seltzer’s Smokehaus 7 uses grains smoked in Seltzer’s smokehouses. The brewery also has a restaurant where you’ll find traditional pub fare.
Fresh From the Farm
While longtime businesses have impacted the types of flavors we identify with Lebanon, the flavor identity of the area is more rooted in the earth than anything. The fertile farmlands that blanket the countryside of the Lebanon Valley, along with the soiled hands that tend the crops and animals, ensure fresh produce, meats, and cheeses are readily available to consumers and restauranteurs.
Farm-to-table values can be ex-
perienced in restaurants throughout the area. The Timeless Café has partnered with local farms, butchers, and creameries to create a fresh and flavorful menu. The café, which serves breakfast and lunch, is a go-to for many locals who enjoy artisan food
and a welcoming atmosphere.
The Lebanon Farmers’ Market, in the heart of the city, is where you’ll find local produce, baked goods, and fresh meats every Thursday - Saturday. When the market is closed, you’re sure to find roadside stands with just a short drive to the country.
I would encourage you to get lost. Most of us have access to GPS, so go for a drive along the country roads of this fertile area. Stop, shop, and dine in the small towns of Mount Gretna, Annville, Myerstown, and Schaefferstown.
The heritage of the people who migrated from Germany comes through in the farmers’ hard work, the creative, entrepreneurial spirit, and the rich flavors of the Lebanon Valley.

A Garden of Delights is Waiting to be Experienced
BY MORGAN CHRISTOPHERWhen I feel the need to put down my phone and my scheduler and let the pressures of the world go away, there is nothing like a stroll through a beautiful garden to reconnect with all that truly matters to me. The great poet Mary Oliver sums it up by reminding us to "visit the garden where the scarlet trumpets are opening their bodies for the hummingbirds who are drinking the sweetness. ... Soon you will notice how stones shine underfoot. Eventually, tides will be the only calendar you believe in." To discover the beauty and serenity
on a visit to
that nature offers, plan a visit to southeastern Pennsylvania this summer to discover the sumptuous delight of time spent strolling beautiful Chanticleer Garden in Wayne, Delaware County.
The pastoral gardens on the grounds of the Rosengarten family estate have been open to the public since

Chanticleer horticulturists, who developed the property since the passing of Adolph Rosengarten, Jr. created the unique settings that visitors enjoy today. Within a half-hour drive of Center City Philadelphia, these well-maintained gardens have delighted visitors worldwide.
Reviews in the Financial Times in London contend the garden is "designed to perfection," while Garden Design magazine has named Chanticleer "America's most inspiring garden." Gardening fans and nature lovers will not want to miss an opportunity to experience this fantastic attraction.
The Chanticleer Foundation, which owns the 50 acres where the gardens are laid, offers 35 acres as a public attraction where a series of themed gardens cel-

The entire garden path runs almost a mile, allowing easy access to the different sections, each highlighting themed presentations. The Gravel Garden, Tennis Court, Ruin, and Pond Garden are filled with a wide variety of hardy perennials cultivated by Chanticleer's team of staff horticulturists.
The Ruin is a visually striking garden area curated on the foundations of the home built in 1925 by Adolph Jr. and Janet Rosengarten. Dramatically offering the air of a historic stone ruin, the garden features three separate areas – a Great Hall with a water table feature, a Library where ornamental stone books are displayed, and a Pool Room featuring marble faces. A sculpture depicting large acorns created by Marcia Donahue offers a whimsical welcome to the Ruin for guests approaching from the adjacent meadow.
Other areas of note that visitors will want to explore on a visit to Chanticleer include an elevated walkway that offers excellent views of the garden below as you leave Chanticleer House. The Serpentine are curved beds of junipers, irises, and silver-leafed willows reminiscent of classic European gardens that are complemented each year with plants like barley and artichoke to illustrate the abundant beauty of agricultural plants. The Bulb Meadow (offering seasonal favorites like tulips and daffodils in spring and irises and colchicums in late summer and fall), Asian Woods (featuring a variety of Asian selections as well as honeysuckles, hydrangea, and bamboo), and the
Pond Garden feature a wide variety of beautiful plants and landscapes for viewing. Bell's Garden, filled with flora and blooms of North American forests, the Vegetable Garden, and a Cutting Garden are also popular displays a visitor will want to enjoy as part of a visit to Chanticleer.
For those who prefer an in-depth experience, guided tours are available. House and Garden Tours are offered every Friday and Saturday at 11 a.m. The Garden Highlights Tour is held every Wednesday and Saturday at 2 p.m. Both tours provide opportunities to learn about the gardens from experienced guides who share the history and design details with guests.
In addition to the magnificent gardens, visitors interested in gardening, or the arts will want to check out some of the educational classes and workshops held throughout the season at Chanticleer. Classes in various topics like deer-resistant gardening, fall planting, and organic vegetable gardening are just some of the programs visitors can register for to hone their skills and develop their green thumbs.
Chanticleer's address is 786 Church Rd., Wayne, PA 19087. When planning a visit, check out www.chanticleergarden.org to learn about garden policies on parking, photography and other topics. The general operating hours are Wednesdays through Sundays from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. For parking reservation information or other details, call the main number at 610-687-4163.

It says a lot about a community when a whole town comes together to celebrate the end of the school year. With kids already rejoicing as they start summer break, the Ford City Renaissance Community Partnership (FCRCP) has planned a five-day festival for youths and adults.
The Ford City School’s Out Family FunFest will be held Tuesday, June 13, through Saturday, June 17. The event will be held on Third Ave. and Joseph Cippel Way (and beyond) in Ford City, Armstrong County. Visitors to the small riverfront town will receive a generous portion of the local flavor during the event. There are activities each day from 5-10 p.m., except
on Saturday when the FunFest opens at 4 p.m. and closes after the fireworks around 10:15 p.m.
Attendees can expect great food, carnival games, face painting, a caricature artist, and popular character appearances throughout the festival. The event also features an impressive midway produced by C&L Shows, with amusement rides and games running daily from 6-10 p.m., with extended Saturday hours. In addition to the midway, there will be special activities for children every day, including a children’s Pet Parade on Thursday.
The Ford City Family FunFest is not just for kids; adults can take in a concert each night at 7 p.m. Bands, including regional favorite
Steeltown, will perform each night on the main stage at Third Ave. and 10th St. From rock and country to dance hits and pop, expect great music every evening. Other shows, including an interactive reptile show with Iceman Reptiles, will entertain festivalgoers of all ages.
Saturday is packed with fun activities, including a car show at 4 p.m., a children’s decorated bicycle parade, and one of the festival’s highlights, the Kids’ Bicycle & Cool Toys Giveaway. Youngsters up to age 14 may enter to win one of the dozens of bikes, scooters, skateboards, and toys. The drawing will
be at 7 p.m. During the 2022 Funfest, 45 children went home with a fantastic prize thanks to local businesses. The effort is part of the mission of Ford City Renaissance Community Partnership – putting smiles on the faces of youngsters and providing opportunities for

While in Ford City, explore the outdoors at Crooked Creek State
Park’s extensive hiking and biking trails. While visiting the park, put your kayak in at the Crooked Creek Spillway for a relaxing trip down the creek. Workhorse Transport & Outfitters, located just 5 minutes south of Ford City, can help you navigate your journey, rent kayaks, and arrange a shuttle back to start at the end of your voyage. Visit https://workhorseoutfitters. com for more information.
Located less than an hour’s drive from Ford City, a side trip to the Pittsburgh Zoo or the steel city’s world-class museums can easily be part of your getaway.
