Advertisement Come sailing aboard the majestic Tall Ship Windy this summer! Windy is a 148-foot traditional four-masted Schooner, and is the only working sailing ship on Navy Pier. Since 1995, Windy has offered daily public sailing excursions, fireworks cruises, educational programs, and private events. Other unique events during the season include storytelling cruises, when guests hear “tall tales” of pirate history, and the glorious architecture of the Chicago Skyline, and two unforgettable annual Jazz orchestra cruises. Windy was awarded the status of the Official Flagship of the City of Chicago, by Mayor Richard Daley in 2006. Tall Ship Windy is hard to miss from the shoreline; you can see her 11 sails billowing in the wind and she gracefully glides across the Chicago lakefront. Not many people routinely have the opportunity to experience sailing, which is so unlike any other boating experience. Seldom do you get to be “at one” with nature, feel the wind, sunshine, the sound of the water, and the skyline views, without the roar of a diesel engine or the smells of engine exhaust. Not to mention, you are spending time on a vessel that is historic. A truly unique blend of the old and the new, Windy is constructed from modern materials, but her design is that of old trading ships of the 19th Century, which brought people and goods from far and wide to settle the Midwest. In those days, when there were no highways, or steamships, Tall Ships were the “trucks” of the era. Windy is modern, while maintaining the character and charm of the Golden Age of Sail. She is truly a beauty! You are not just a captive “passenger” on Tall Ship Windy…and we don’t just motor around the harbor- Once we cast off, the sails are “set”, the engine turned off, and you are now real sailors! Without a prescribed course, we sail wherever the wind takes us. While of course you are invited to relax, sit back and enjoy the view, cruising on Windy can also be an active, interactive experience which is fun for all ages. You are invited to hoist the working sails, learn the vocabulary of sailing, “trim the sheets”, and even take a turn at the helm. Guests are free to move about the ship, explore, ask questions and learn about seafaring and Tall Ships. Our Captains and crew will love to engage you in stories, demonstrations, activities, and are known to an occasional burst forth in song! Several times each day, we offer short storytelling programs such as Tales of Pirates on the Great Lakes, and our legendary Lakefront Architecture Sail. A popular sail is our twilight early evening sail, in which you are treated to relaxing music, as the sun wanes down over the city. Visit Windy’s “Ship Store” for your enjoyment; we have a full bar equipped with drinks for small ones, drinks for tall ones, and a variety of soft drinks, coffee, and portable snacks. On Wednesdays and Saturdays, join us for the best seat in the house for the Summer Fireworks display at Navy Pier! Windy sails “rain or shine”, if at all possible, we are not going to let a passing shower set us back, except for a possible brief postponement. The Windy experience is special, and so is the ship’s story. When you step aboard Windy, you are not cruising with a large corporation who has a “fleet” of tourist boats. Windy is a small, family-owned and operated business helmed by the husband-and-wife team of Captain Bruce and Karen Randall. Captain Bruce is a member of a large maritime family who grew up in the Boston area. Most of the men and many of the women in his family have been professional sailors: sea captains, fishermen, merchant marine or military mariners. He has raced sailboats, taught and coached others, and has been a licensed Captain for 15 years. Karen also grew up in a sailing family in New York, and after a career as a Clinical Psychologist returned to leisure and competitive sailing in the 1990’s. We’ll bet you’ll never guess WHO was one of her sailing coaches! Many of the Randall family members work or have worked for Windy over the years, and others who join the crew quickly become members of the “Windy family”. It is a convivial and intimate atmosphere, with numerous of the crew members living aboard the ship 24/7, for the summer. They build their own mini-community and lovingly take care of the ship as their home for the season. You are quickly drawn into the teamwork, mutual respect, affection, laughter and good energy in this family-oriented and family-friendly business, which makes Tall Ship Windy a very special kind of adventure – and anything BUT ordinary!

T
his summer, as you’re enjoying one of Chicago’s many breathtaking waterways, now there’s a way to give back to nature at the same time through a unique program. Through the Shedd Aquarium’s Kayak For Conservation mission, individuals and groups can sign up to paddle the Chicago River’s North Branch Canal alongside Shedd’s wildlife conservation experts to help look for animals in need, pick up litter and collect data that contributes to Shedd’s scientific research of the Chicago River and the area riverbeds. The program is open to all ages and skill levels, from those who’ve never paddled to advanced rowers. Not only does it give a tour of the scenic waterways of the city, but it offers participants the opportunity to make a positive impact on Chicago’s aquatic ecosystem. And the best part is that you will likely see painted and red-eared slider turtles, multiple species of herons and ducks, honeybees, butterfl ies and more during the tour. There are two different options to partake in—the 2-hour River Explorers sessions, which are introductory in nature, and the 3-hour River Monitors sessions that provide an intermediate paddling experience. ummertime in the city is music to everyone’s ears as Chicago’s robust music festival season kicks off. Here are our picks for what not to miss this month and a sneak peek at the behemoth Lollapalooza coming up on its heels in early August. Just north of the city is the annual destination festival Ravinia (running all month) that presents music under the stars. While there is a large pavilion to take in the headlining talent, you can also pack a picnic and a blanket and enjoy the (much more affordable) lawn seats. This year’s lineup includes the Steve Miller Band (July 1), rapper T.I. (July 2), R&B crooner Maxwell (July 9), Lady Antebellum (July 10), Jennifer Hudson (July 14) and Weird Al Yankovic (July 28). Take Metra from Ogilvie Transportation Center downtown, north to the Ravinia stop. www.ravinia.org The Pitchfork Music Festival (July 19-21) is another of the popular options this month, held in Union Park. This year’s lineup includes indie darlings Haim, the 60th anniversary celebration of The Isley Brothers, pop queen Robyn, plus Mavis Staples, Belle & Sebastian and Charlie XCX. In addition to the music, Pitchfork hosts

He conquered helping the Chicago Cubs to a World Series victory, now team manager Joe Maddon is taking on his latest challenge–presenting a new restaurant. The latest “new kid” on the restaurant block is Wahlburgers, a casual dining spot founded by pop star Donnie Wahlberg, actor brother Mark and sibling Chef Paul Wahlberg. Also the subject of a hit reality show on the A&E Network, Wahlburgers offers a menu of crave-worthy burgers, sandwiches, sides and specialty drinks made from scratch. There’s also Wahlbrewski: a specialty draught from

Chicago has an incredible 18.5 miles of lakefront from the north to south sides, offering a record number of beaches to enjoy in the warmer weather.
