ne of the great things about Chicago is how much we celebrate our multicultural heritage, from the distinct communities that call our neighborhoods home, to the variety of restaurants and diverse events to enjoy. This month marks the 21st Annual World Music Festival Chicago—for 17 days (September 13-29), patrons will be treated to free musical performances from incredible bands and artists across the globe in one of the largest events of its kind in the country. Shows will take place at 17 venues across the city including Millennium Park, the Chicago Cultural Center, Navy Pier and the Old Town School of Folk Music. Some of the marquee events include Ragamala: A Celebration of Indian Classical Music on Sept. 13, an all-night classical concert popular in India that’s rarely held in the States as well as The Global Peace Picnic on Sept. 22 at the Humboldt Park Boathouse. www.chicago.gov

ike many things in Chicago, shopping in the city is second to none. From neighborhood boutiques to flagship stores from Apple, Gucci and more, there’s plenty to choose from, for every budget. For fashion, start with Lost Girls Vintage, which has the market on boho chic looks. The owners up until recently ran their business out of a 1976 Dodge RV Camper, but with their first brick-and-mortar store in West Town they have shelves of vintage clothing including plus size garments that are often hard to find. Also score jewelry and beauty products while you shop. www.lostgirlschicago.com For fashion-forward guys there is the inclusive Andersonville boutique Cowboys And Astronauts that has curated fashion and accessories as well as men’s lifestyle and grooming supplies. You can also shop by type, whether you’re a “Proud Geek,” “The Globetrotter” or the “Creative Type.” www.cowboysandastronauts.com Also in Andersonville is the home garden emporium Gethsemane Garden Center, family owned and operated for 40 years with a stunning array of flora, from annuals to cacti and succulents. The garden center also has gardening tools, beautifully
designed plant holders and a gift store. www.gethsemanegardens.com For more home goods, head to Jayson Home in Lincoln Park. Every corner of the store can decorate every corner of your home with a selection of stylish mirrors, coffee tables, accent chairs, rugs, lighting, candles and even vintage selections. www. jaysonhome.com One of the city’s newest shops is The Bitten Hand in Bridgeport with quirky gifts and handmade pieces “for unique guests”; find tarot, candles, crystals, totes, jewelry, patches and other must-have knick knacks made by locals. Then stop next door to the owner’s other spot, Jackalope Coffeehouse. www.jackalopecoffee.com With locations in the Southport Corridor and Bucktown, Red Balloon is the ultimate shop for kids with items like youth Cubs jerseys, initial tees, a range of toys and customizable decor for kids bedrooms. www. theredballoon.com For records and books, head to Wicker Park. Quimby’s Bookstore has hard-to-find titles including a selection of zines while Reckless Records is the spot for new and used vinyl and more. www.quimbys.com and www.reckless.com
BOXVILLE
THE GREAT OUTDOORS MARKETS Shopping in Chicago gets a dose of fresh air with these seasonal and year-round outdoor markets. Boxville Capitalizing on the shipping container retail movement that has popped up all over the country, Boxville is Chicago’s first of its kind in the Bronzeville neighborhood. It combines a weekly food market with a container mall that allows independent retailers with an affordable place to sell goods. Boxville is open Wednesday nights from 4-7 pm and Sunday afternoons from 12-4 pm through the end of October. www.boxville.org Maxwell Street Market For more than 100 years, Maxwell Street Market has been a Chicago tradition every Sunday (9 am-3 pm), where bargains and bargaining take on international flavor. Here you can find an eclectic mix of goods, fresh produce, clothing, furniture, vintage pieces and even tools are up for sale. There’s also Mexican and Latin street food available. www.chicago.gov

The multicultural neighborhood of Pilsen has a strong Mexican heritage with some of the best regional food around including tacos at Don Pedros Carnitas; there’s also newer spots like the award-winning Dusek’s and Honky Tonk BBQ.
Kitschy shops and locally-owned boutiques line the streets of Pilsen, with many goods by Chicago artisans. Some of our favorites are Knee Deep Vintage with retro-inspired clothes and furniture and vinyl emporium 606 Records.
The Skylark is a nearly famous bar in this neighborhood, having been used as a spot for movie shoots and popular for writers and other creatives. We also love the zany decor of futuristic Simone’s and piano bar Tack Room.
Whether you head to the intimate Thalia Hall for a concert or comedy show, or enjoy 2nd Friday gallery walks from The Chicago Art Department, there’s plenty to do in Pilsen. Also make a trip to the National Museum of Mexican Art.
