Mammoths at the Museum Move over El Niño. Victoria’s Royal BC Museum descends into a deep freeze this summer when woolly mammoths and other giants of the Ice Age return for the first time in more than 10,000 years. Mammoths: Giants of the Ice Age transports visitors back to a time great beasts dominated the world and ancient peoples struggled to survive in a rapidly changing environment. The exhibition opens June 3 and runs through December 31. Everything about Mammoths: Giants of the Ice Age is on a huge scale. Walk among fleshed-out models of these imposing creatures that stood more than four meters tall and weighed as much as seven tonnes. However, despite their size, or perhaps because of it, these early cousins of the elephant

The exhibition, presented in partnership with Field Museum, includes an exceptional collection of fossils, preserved mammoth flesh, immersive multimedia and engaging interactive displays. Visitors will be able to touch real mammoth tusks and mastodon teeth, and learn about some of their fierce neighbours such as dire wolves, saber-toothed cats and short-faced bears. Rare objects on display include early cave art, huge skulls and tusks, and weird, wonderful mammoth relatives, including dwarf mammoths that lived on California’s Channel Islands.

Salute to the Bard Greater Victoria Shakespeare Festival brings its 26th season to the Victoria stage this summer, presenting The Winter’s Tale and Twelfth Night. The two plays will be performed in repertory July 7 through July 30 on the festival’s Camas Stage, outdoors at Camosun College’s Lansdowne campus. In The Winter’s Tale, one of Shakespeare’s elegiac late romances, find a visually rich fairytale of redemption, time and magical events, while Twelfth Night (or “What You Will”) gets turned on its head with a gender-switched cast. The festival schedule for this season introduces a matinee, presented at 1:30pm on Saturdays. The Winter’s Tale takes the stage Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays at 7:30pm. Twelfth Night will be performed Wednesdays and Fridays at 7:30 p.m.; Saturdays at 1:30 p.m. Tickets are $24, or $19 for students and seniors. Children 12 and younger are free. OCTOBER 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 John Adams, of Discover the Past Tours, host of Ghostly Walks and Chinatown Walks
Great Ghosts! As British Columbia’s most haunted place, Victoria boasts more than a few supernatural stories. The city celebrates its spooky side with the Ghosts of Victoria Festival, featuring a variety of events in late October, but John Adams, host of the city’s popular Ghostly Walks, offers ideas for those waning to explore year-round.

Several shops in Old Town along Government Street are good places to start, including Rogers Chocolates and Old Morris. Tourism Victoria can also provide names of many haunted restaurants, bars, hotels and bed and breakfasts.

More ideas? Craigdarroch Castle, open daily for visitors to see the splendour of its restored rooms, does not offer ghost tours, but has been the setting for many spooky movies. Hatley Castle, part of Royal Roads University, is haunted by ghosts of the Dunsmuir family who once owned it. Featured in the Creepy Canada TV series, the formal gardens and museum are open daily. The Victoria Golf Course on scenic Beach Drive beside the ocean in Oak Bay is haunted by Doris Gravlin who was strangled there by her husband in 1936. Many believe she is the most frequently seen ghost in town. Chinatown has many stories of ghosts and the supernatural. Adams’ Chinatown Walks focus on history, but at Halloween a few ghost stories slip in. And Market Square, today a collection of historic brick buildings from the late 1800s, has ghosts that from long ago saloons, brothels and gambling dens.

Whale watching with Prince of Whales
WEST COAST WILD
PHOTOS COURTESY PRINCE OF WHALES
Outdoor exploits for adventure-lovers Welcome to the wild West Coast, where ocean meets mountains, forests were made for exploring, and touring is just as often done by kayak or bike. For nature enthusiasts, a whale-watching tour is a must during a Victoria vacation. While West Coast waters and shorelines are teaming with fascinating creatures, the true stars of a coastal wildlife adventure are the whales. Several resident pods of orcas make their home in Victoria-area waters, not to mention numerous minke and humpback whales. Those embarking on this ultimate West Coast experience may also get to share in the excitement of seeing several calves recently born to residents pods. 18

In addition to the possibility of snapping some pretty memorable photos, there’s lots to learn from the on-board naturalists working with Victoria’s top whale watching companies, like Prince of Whales. From leaning about the habits and characteristics of these majestic creatures to the latest conservation efforts, learning is all part of the experience. In addition to orcas, humpback whales are also being seen in increasing numbers. Because of their migratory nature, the best time to view humpbacks is from July to February, however sightings have been reported throughout the year. Naturalists also share a wealth of knowledge about the many other species often spotted on a given trip.

A regional treasure, the Galloping Goose and Lochside trail network will take you from the urban core to the south Island’s pastoral countryside and wild West Coast, 85 kilometres of accessible, picturesque trail along a former railway line – ideal for a scenic tour or a family excursion. The Galloping Goose, a 55k trail from Victoria to Sooke, is the first section of the Trans-Canada Trail. The Goose intersects with the Lochside Trail in Saanich, which ventures out through the rolling farmlands of the Saanich Peninsula. Cyclists wanting to stick to the city can follow the Scenic Marine Drive, which starts downtown and winds along the picturesque waterfront of Fairfield, Oak Bay and Saanich. Head back to town, or connect with the Lochside Trail to continue out the Saanich Peninsula.
If trails are more your speed, mountain bike enthusiasts will find a variety of opportunities in the region, including mountain bike trails and a jump park at Bear Mountain Resort, and Hartland, on the Saanich Peninsula, with trail options for all levels of riders. For more information – and more locations – visit the South Island Mountain Bike Society online at simbs.com or check in with the Visitor Centre. Other options for the adventure enthusiast? Take to the trees with AdrenaLine Zipline Adventures in Sooke, or checkout WildPlay, in the West Shore, about 20 minutes from downtown, where the Monkido Aerial Adventure has options for all ages.

Coastal explorations Madrona Gallery in downtown Victoria has a full slate of exciting exhibits on the summer calendar, opening with new works from Hashim Hannoon, to May 28. After emigrating to Canada in 2009, Hanoon’s paintings reveal an interest in capturing the essence of community; in turn viewers experience the city through the filter of his imagination. Emerging BC artist Guthrie Gloag follows June 11 to 24 and visitors will be intrigued to see how the artist incorporates the most coastal of materials – driftwood – to create expressive life-size animal and human forms.

An eye to nature Experience nature as interpreted by Canadian artistic icon Robert Bateman at the Bateman Gallery, downtown on Victoria’s Inner Harbour. Located in the historic Steamship Terminal, across from the BC legislature, the centre provides a stunning backdrop to Bateman’s work. In addition to special exhibits, displays explore the major themes of the artist’s work, including his early experimentation with abstract art styles, his travels throughout the world and his commentary on the state of our planet.
A fine look at fine art Climb in the car for a picturesque drive to the community of Sooke, about 45 minutes from downtown Victoria, and the Sooke Fine Arts Show, July 22 to August 1. Showcasing some of the finest artists from Vancouver Island and BC’s coastal islands, the show celebrates its 30th anniversary in 2016. Vancouver Island’s longest-running juried fine art show draws more than 8,000 art lovers from Canada, the US and abroad who soak in over 375 works of original art in the 17,000-square-foot gallery at the SEAPARC complex near Sooke Harbour. Daily artist demonstrations, talks, guided tours, live music, gift shop and bistro are also planned.
