HOT HOTDATES DATES Here’s to Festival Season! Sunny skies signal the start of festival season and here in Victoria, there's no need to wait ‘til summer! UNO Fest gets things going May 21 to 31. Hosted by Intrepid Theatre, the same talented folks behind the long-running Victoria Fringe Festival, Victoria’s annual 10-day festival highlights a whole host of singular theatre performances.

Bobby McFerrin

The inaugural Victoria International Kite Festival is sure to bring a smile to faces young and old when it takes to the skies over Clover Point, on the Victoria waterfront. The new family-oriented international festival brings together professional kite flyers from across North America and kiting enthusiasts from the local community. On Saturday, enjoy “Open Skies” where you can join the best of the best to fly kites for the day (inexpensive kites will be available for purchase on location), while Sunday brings kids’ kite-making, amazingly large kites, acrobatic kite teams and more!

HOT DATES HOT DATES An Evening With... Keb’ Mo’ The Victoria Jazz Society presents An Evening With... Keb’ Mo’ May 1 at the stunning Alix Goolden Performance Hall. The three-time Grammy Awardwinning blues musician has been described as “a living link to the seminal Delta blues that travelled up the Mississippi River and across the expanse of America.” With a postmodern blues style influenced by many eras and genres, including folk, rock, jazz and pop, Keb’ Mo’ has sold more than two million records, and has performed at the White House and at President Obama’s Inaugural Ball. His genre-blending artfulness, intuitive lyrics, unique guitar style, distinctive voice and magnetic charisma on stage will be a highlight of the spring calendar for Victoria blues fans, who haven’t heard him locally since the 2004 JazzFest! Keb' Mo'

Banjos & Bluegrass Expect to be entertained when Steve Martin and the Steep Canyon Rangers are joined by Edie Brickell on the Royal Theatre stage May 12. Featuring songs from their album Love Has Come for You, the concert will showcase new material by Martin and Brickell, along with the unique hybrid of bluegrass and comedy that Martin and the Steep Canyon Rangers have used to delight audiences at their sold-out, critically acclaimed shows.

On Stage You’ll never look at Homer’s Odyssey the same way after enjoying Langham Court Theatre’s production of The Penelopiad, Margaret Atwood’s brilliant re-imagining of the classic from the wry eye of Penelope, Odysseus’s devoted, longsuffering wife. For 20 years, Penelope used cunning and the wiles of her maids to keep her kingdom while her husband wandered home from Troy. Now in Hades she has an eternity to reconsider her story and her role in the death of the maids who kept her safe. The Penelopiad plays until May 10. Langham Court follows up June 12 to 28 with the Tony Award-winning Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead, a witty comedy from Tom Stoppard in which two of Shakespeare’s minor characters are summoned to Elsinore, home of their school chum Hamlet. But they don’t know who sent for them or why – or, come to think of it, even who is who… Palace intrigue and backstage comedy converge in Bill Cain’s Equivocation, an entertaining ode to art, politics and the perils of negotiating both, through May 25 at the Belfry Theatre. When King James’ factotum Sir Robert Cecil charges William Shakespeare with writing the “true history” of Guy Fawkes and the thwarted Gunpowder Plot, the famous playwright tries to discover where the fiction stops and where the facts may lead – without losing his head in the process!

VICTORIA:

THE CITY OF ROMANCE JENNIFER BLYTH PHOTO

Victoria – long known as the City of Gardens – may well be gaining a second moniker: the City of Romance. Topping a long list of recent accolades is Travel + Leisure magazine's recent ranking of Victoria in the top 20 World’s Best Cities for Romance. Described as having pictureperfect mountain and ocean vistas, and a buzzing farm-totable food scene, readers say lovers will feel a world away visiting Victoria. Described as a Europeanlooking Pacific Northwest destination with everything from whale watching to lush parks and unique dining, the region also grabbed third spot in USA Today’s 10 Best Readers’ Choice survey for Best Romantic North American Getaway.

10

where.ca // MAY - JUNE 2014

And Victoria’s list of romantic accolades continues to grow as Amazon.ca recently announced the city as winner of its Top 20 Most Romantic Cities in Canada ranking for the second year in a row. Balancing traditional romantic activities like horse-drawn carriage tours, afternoon tea and beautiful gardens, with unique experiences like outdoor adventure, stunning hikes and an amazing variety of local culinary opportunities, it's no surpise to locals that the region is striking a chord with romantics. So where do Victorians look to share a little romance? Here are a few of our favourites.

X 1. The jewel of Victoria’s

extensive parks system, Beacon Hill Park is a mixture of formal and informal spaces filled with romantic spots, particularly in the late spring and summer when the gardens are in full bloom. Stroll the gently arched stone bridge across Goodacre Lake, climb Beacon Hill to soak in the views across Finlayson Point, take in a performance at the Cameron Bandshell or just relax with a picnic amid the blossoms – with beauty around every corner, a little romance isn’t hard to find!

X 2. From High Tea on the

the Bengal Lounge, who can resist the charm of this grand dame of Victoria hotels, The Fairmont Empress? A tasting tour of some of Victoria’s celebrated Saanich Peninsula wineries offers a romantic escape through picturesque rural landscape, or head to the west coast community of Sooke to the culinary delights of Sooke Harbour House hotel, restaurant, gallery and spa, long considered one of the Capital Region’s most romantic spots. Perhaps consider a little Coastal Romance package from the spa...

X 3. A favourite among

cyclists or those looking for a leisurely drive around the city, the views along the picturesque Scenic Marine Drive are unparalleled. Take

a hand-in-hand stroll along the Causeway or West Song Walkway, or sit back and relax beneath a cozy blanket while Victoria Carriage Tours takes you on a horse-drawn tour of the city’s most romantic sites.

X 4. Consistently voted as one of the city’s favourite restaurants, Il Terrazzo’s infinitely romantic setting is ideal for a candlelit têteà-tête beside a warm brick fireplace. For those with loftier goals, the twinkling lights and expansive views of the city are equally romantic at Vista 18, high atop the Chateau Victoria hotel. X 5. A rose by any other

special. Victoria’s renowned gardens provide the ideal backdrop for romance, from the traditional Rose Garden in Oak Bay to the historic treasures at Abkhazi Garden, just minutes from downtown in the Fairfield neighbourhood. The Butchart Gardens is famous for its romantic setting, complemented by varied dining options, including afternoon tea and fine cuisine in the Dining Room Restaurant, offering views to the stunning gardens. Visit in the evening after June 15 and see the gardens in a whole new light with Night Illuminations, continuing through the summer.

Bengal Lounge marks diamond anniverary the Bengal Lounge. Cocktails included the Bombay Stinger, The Bengal Tiger, The Tropical Itch, and The Bengal Bar Special. The lounge was an instant success and became the place to catch sight of celebrities like John Wayne who visited every time he sailed his converted minesweeper, the Wild Goose, into the harbour.

The tiger can’t talk and the servers won’t, but if they could – oh, the stories they'd tell! Celebrating its 60th anniversary, the Bengal Lounge originated as the Reading and Writing Room, occupying the entire first floor of the hotel's South wing (1912). In 1954, The Empress became the first establishment in Victoria – and one of only three in BC – to receive a liquor license. Initially the Coronet Lounge, "The Empress Special" became the drink of choice, a combination of rye, pineapple juice and grenadine in a sugared cocktail glass. In 1970, “Operation Teacup” brought a facelift and as a nod to the hotel being named after Queen Victoria, Empress of India, an Indian theme included curries on the menu, waiters outfitted in Nehru jackets and caps, and a Bengal tiger skin hung above the large working fireplace in the renamed

SILVER CRUCIFIX

THE VIKINGS ARE COMING!

Vikings features a variety of interactive exhibits and artifacts rarely seem outside Scandinavia. IMAGES COURTESY THE ROYAL BC MUSEUM

Venture back centuries this summer to one of the most storied eras of human history: The Viking Age. A SILVER PENDANT FROM THE VIKING AGE

Making its first North American stop, We Call Them Vikings opens at the Royal BC Museum May 16, produced by the Swedish History Museum in Sweden and MuseumsPartner in Austria. While many stories persist about the Vikings, the interactive exhibition demonstrates that not all the stories are as we believed. Vikings challenges commonly held beliefs, and with insights into areas such as domestic life, death rituals, the significance of their craft, the 20

power of mythology and the symbolism of their ships, the Vikings emerge in a fascinating new light.

Scandinavia. Beyond the fascinating artifacts, visitors can try their hand at board games, building a Viking ship, or dressing a Viking.

We Call Them Vikings begins with the period between 750 and 1100 CE in Scandinavia, known as the Viking Age, and events in nearby Europe more than a thousand years ago.

Though the word ‘viking’ appears in Old Norse sources, it is mainly used to describe an activity. Men and women went ‘on a viking’ – a commercial trip or raid. People seem to have referred to themselves as a Viking only when involved in this activity.

The exhibition includes more than 500 artifacts, including jewellery, swords, axes and clothing – some rare, and many which have never before been shown outside

areas. Scandinavians moved into Russia, and also travelled eastward to Byzantium and to what is now the Middle East. By the end of the 8th century they were raiding in France, the British Isles and Ireland, south into the Mediterranean and into North Africa. Other journeys took them to Iceland, Greenland and even to Newfoundland. These new lands brought exotic goods as well as cultural influences. Among the hundreds of artifacts in the exhibition are an Irish cross, a Buddha figurine from India and a Coptic ladle from Egypt. Over time, these voyages to other areas contributed to belief systems, ideology and objects taking on other shapes and forms of expression.

being involved directly in trade or colonization.

Viking Age society was hierarchical, but not rigidly so. The greatest difference between people was that which existed between the free and the unfree (thralls). Women generally had a more equal position in society, sometimes

Two very different religious systems were also found in Scandinavia at the time – the indigenous Old Norse religion and the more recent Christianity. The former involved worship of many gods and goddesses while the latter focused on one supreme god. These belief systems were often merged, and the results are shown in this exhibition in many examples of fine jewellery that include Christian crosses and fish as well as the

Representations of these Norse gods reflected in this exhi bition range from exquisite filigree-work jewellery to runeinscribed spearheads, from silver embroidered silk fabric to the oldest known crucifix in Sweden.

Acres of Lions perform at Rock the Royal! May 24

A CAUSE FOR CELEBRATION! It would be significant enough if one of Victoria’s beloved theatres was turning 100, but both? Well, that calls for a party! To celebrate, the Royal McPherson Theatre Society has created the Centennial Festival, May 18 to 25, honouring the “landmark buildings and the extraordinary impact they have had on Victoria’s cultural life.” The Royal Theatre, 805 Broughton St. The Victoria Opera House Company began construction of the Royal Theatre in the spring of 1913, but when cost estimates of $250,000 soared to $400,000 – with $100,000 for the opulent interior alone – $5 shares were offered and the community rallied with donations of cash and supplies, the society notes. The exterior is an exceptional example of Rococo/ Renaissance revival architecture with four storeys of multi-coloured brickwork, glazed terra cotta tiles and 24

decorative and whimsical ornamentation. Opening Dec. 29, 1913 with a performance of Kismet starring Otis Skinner, the original house held 1,558 patrons and offered a fully functional orchestra pit. The ornate interior featured marble, blue brocade wall panels, scagliola and allegorical murals and frescoes, designed by Parisborn C.E. Dorisy. War and motion pictures brought challenges and various owners over the coming years, but also the debut of the newly formed Victoria Symphony Orchestra in 1943, and the Victoria Opera Society in 1944. In 1943 the Royal began showing films in addition to live acts, thanks to a removable screen, but as decades passed, a movement emerged to return it to its former role as a performing arts centre. When building upgrades of the 1980s damaged much of the plasterwork both inside and outside, research and Maritime Museum of BC hours of detailed restoration

returned cherubs and other creatures to the theatre, designated a National Historic Site of Canada in 1988. The McPherson Playhouse, Centennial Square Local lawyer R.T. Elliott began construction of what would become the McPherson Theatre in 1913. Early in construction, when Alexander Pantages was looking for a substantial venue for touring vaudeville shows and motion pictures, the project took a dramatic turn. T.S. McPherson and the Fullerton Brothers joined Elliott in creating a grand performing arts theatre. The Italian Renaissance-style exterior featured fenestration designs and overhanging boxed eaves, while inside the Baroque revival décor included marble and rich wood paneling. Unusually advanced construction included steel and concrete materials and state-of-the-art fire safety equipment, the society notes. It even boasted electric hair curlers for the performers!

Touring shows referred to the Pantages as the “Golden

Barn,” which over the years hosted performing lions, a swimming act complete with a canvas pool, famous troupes such as The Dumbells, The 3 Plunkett Brothers and Al Jolson, and even prizefights including “Gentleman Jim” James J. Corbett. Name and ownership changes followed war and the Depression, and while live theatre and films kept the facility afloat, it was struggling. At his death, Thomas McPherson left the theatre to the City of Victoria, including a substantial sum for renovations, and on July 24, 1964 city council renamed it the McPherson Playhouse.

An army of craftsmen readied the new McPherson for opening night Jan. 26, 1965, when Lt. Gov. George Pearkes cut a ribbon of McPherson tartan draped across the stage. Lights Up – A Gay Musical Revue of Hit Broadway and London Shows was the inaugural performance and the following evening saw a sterling line-up of actors, dancers and singers from the community. The McPherson Playhouse received heritage designation in 1995. For more information about these venues and their coming events, visit www.rmts.bc.ca

HOT ART Canadian Landscapes Visit Madrona Gallery this June for the gallery's fourth solo exhibition of work by Nicholas Bott, one of Canada’s preeminent landscape artists known for his confident brushwork and strong sense of design. Since starting his career in the 1970s in Northern BC, Bott has explored many remote areas of Western Canada, always searching out new inspiration. June’s exhibit will focus on Vancouver Island and the west, including a number of major works.

NICHOLAS BOTT, MOUNT WILLIAMS-KANANASKIS

A Time for Renewal Be sure to visit West End Gallery June 21 to July 3 for Greta Guzek’s exceptional exhibition of new West Coast paintings, Renewal. Bold contrasting colours, distinctive brush work and distorted perspectives lend themselves to Guzek’s playful expression of coastal life. Here, concentrating on the theme of renewal, she depicts charming seaside cabins, windswept shores and the beauty of the local arbutus trees. GRETA GUZEK, SKY EMBRACE “In this collection of work I am contemplating the wonder of infinite renewal; how the natural world re-generates effortlessly, providing me with constant engagement and inspiration for the thing I love doing: Painting.” Join the gallery for the opening reception Saturday, June 21 with artist in attendance from 1 to 4pm.

May visitors will want to stop by for an exciting exhibit of new work by Victoria painter Ken Faulks, on display May 10 to 22.

Through the Looking Glass Venture Through the Looking Glass with the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria this spring when the gallery presents a survey of modern and contemporary art selected entirely from its collection. The exhibit is structured according to Lewis Carroll’s late-19th century tale of the same title, THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS, the sequel to Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland in B.C. BINNING, CONVOY UNDER WAY which the heroine begins in the safe environs of her fire-lit library only to be led by curiosity through the reflecting glass into a world of backwardness, distortion and “upside-downsiness.” Organized by chapter, drawing on the imagery of mirrors, playing cards and chess, the exhibition begins with a portrait of Charles Baudelaire by Édouard Manet and concludes with recent works by major Canadian artists, for a new telling of 100 years of art history. 32
