HOT DATES Good Timber

Timber!

DAVID LOWES PHOTO

Much of British Columbia was built on logging and the Royal BC Museum is celebrating this history in August with Good Timber: Songs and Stories of the Western Logger, “a rollicking musical revue celebrating the time when loggers climbed trees.” The ensemble performance of stellar local artists plays against a multi-media backdrop of outstanding archival imagery, August 8 to 27. Inspired by a dog-eared copy of Rhymes of the Western Logger, a compilation of logging

camp poetry by Robert E. Swanson, creators Ross Desprez and creative partner Tobin Stokes have gathered a stellar cast for this entertaining romp through the past. Set against a multimedia backdrop of rarely seen images from the BC Archives, John Gogo, Mark Hellman, Kelt and Colleen Eccleston, Sarah Donald and Desprez act, sing and play everything from guitar to handsaw. Original music ranges from Celtic and country to folk and blues, to accompany the loggers’ poetry.

Sensational Summer Theatre Summer has become synonymous with Shakespeare for many theatre buffs. Here in the capital city, the Victoria Shakespeare Society continues the tradition with its annual Shakespeare Summer Festival at Camosun College’s Lansdowne Campus, July 4 to August 13. This season, take in a female Hamlet, directed by David MacPherson, and Comedy of Errors, directed by Clayton Jevne, with the plays performed on alternating nights. At the Belfry Theatre July 5 to 17, join Atomic Vaudeville and the teenage chamber choir from Uranium, Saskatchewan in the comedy/tragedy/ musical Ride the Cyclone. When the students die in a roller coaster accident at a travelling fair, “Karnack, a mechanized fortune-telling machine, feels responsible for the young choir’s demise, and gives the teens a chance to express themselves to the world after death. Ride the Cyclone is their final recital, where they celebrate their individuality while coming to terms with their untimely demise.”

YOU ARE HERE Rockland

Linny D. Vine at Moss Street

One of Victoria’s oldest neighbourhoods, Rockland boasts some of the region’s finest architecture of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, set among stately mature trees and lovely gardens. Several of the region’s most beloved attractions are also here – Craigdarroch Castle, Government House and the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria. While the most direct way to reach Rockland is via Fort Street (see To Get There, below), its charming streets also make it a favourite destination for a run, walk or cycle. Take a more leisurely route by heading south on Douglas Street to Dallas Road, following its waterfront route to Moss Street, where a left turn will take you into the heart of the neighbourhood. Government House Gardens

LARRY PFISTER PHOTO/COURTESY THE ART GALLERY OF GREATER VICTORIA

1. In July, Moss Street welcomes the Art Gallery's annual Paint-In, when more than 100 artists demonstrate their talents for local art enthusiasts. The gallery is open year-round and welcomes world-class visiting exhibits, in addition to shows mounted from its impressive permanent collection. 2. Nearby, Craigdarroch Castle offers a breathtaking example of how the 19th century elite elit lived. The 1890 home of the Dunsmuir family, fam whose fortune was built on Vancouver Island Isla coal, the castle presents carefully refurbished ref rooms and exhibits illustrating how the family, their friends and guests lived. The castle also hosts a variety of special events through the year. 3. A little farther into Rockland, discover the gardens of Government House. While the home is the private residence of BC's Lieutenant Governor, the stunning gardens are open to the public and are a highlight for many gardeners.

THE COMOX VALLEY

Welcome to the Jungle!

About 220km from Victoria Continuing north, travel either the newer and more direct Inland Island Highway to the Comox Valley, or opt for a more leisurely, picturesque route along the older Island Highway. About a three-hour drive from Victoria, the Comox Valley includes Courtenay, Comox and Cumberland along with several smaller communities, including Hornby and Denman Islands. Mt. Washington Alpine Resort is a favourite in the winter for its wonderful skiing but summer visitors also flock here for hiking, mountain biking and other activities. The ocean, lakes and rivers are never far away and are popular for kayaking, windsurfing, swimming and exploring. Other highlights include historic Cumberland, a former mining and logging community, and the Courtenay and District Museum, the first stop on the Great Canadian Fossil Trail, thanks to the discovery of fossilized remains of such creatures as an elasmosaur and a mosasaur. SAVOUR A TASTE OF

FRESH VANCOUVER ISLAND FLAVOURS Prepare to indulge in the best food and wine Vancouver Island has to offer this summer at the third-annual Taste: Victoria’s Festival of Food and Wine July 21 to 24. Focusing on Vancouver Island cuisine and British Columbia wines, the festival is supported by a number of local winemakers, chefs, artisan producers, farmers and fishers – all key players in helping to make Vancouver Island a vibrant culinary destination. 16

where.ca // JULY - AUGUST 2011

“When choosing partners for Taste, I look at a number of factors to ensure they’re really walking the talk, so to speak,” says Taste founder Kathy McAree. “I look at how local and seasonal ingredients are showcased in their products (and) their contribution to our community which contributes to our local economy. Taste is also unique in that, rather than just being one day, it offers four great days of serious food and wine indulgence!”

Taste the bounty of Vancouver Island

The Taste weekend kicks off on Thursday, July 21 at Victoria’s Crystal Garden with The Main Event, an evening brimming with more than 100 BC wines and great Vancouver Island eats. Guests will be joined by local chefs, wine producers and the live music of Greenlaw, a local band with a unique blend of dub, soul, jazz, drum and bass-infused rhythms.

Other special events taking place July 22 to 24 include the wine and seafood extravaganza Sips and Seafood, hosted by the Inn at Laurel Point and chef Takashi Ito, a Silk Road tea tasting with Tea Master Daniela Cubelic, a Swine and The Vine pig roast on the Hotel Grand Pacific patio, a three-course brunch at Vista 18 and a unique wine seminar of Vancouver Island vs. the World. New to this year’s multiday line-up is Land and Sea Harvest on the Family Farm, a dining adventure to take place in the middle of the field at the Vantreight Family Farm, overlooking the Saanich Peninsula and ocean. Join Ryan Vantreight and chef Matt Rissling from The Marina Restaurant for a “zero mile diet” dinner, paired with wines from BC’s Mission Hill Family Estate Winery. Jacob Richmond as Herchel Blackwell MILES LOWRY PHOTOS

Here in Victoria, there’s nothing wrong with being Blue, at least when it comes to theatre! In 2008, led by veteran producer and director Brian Richmond, the founders of Blue Bridge Repertory Theatre embraced the opportunity to produce world-class productions of the great plays, crafted and performed by some of Canada’s most respected directors, designers and actors. Highlights have included inaugural year productions of As You Like It, Death of a Salesman and The Fantasticks. The company earned the Victoria Theatre Critics' Spotlight Award for Best Professional Production, and Best Actor (David Ferry) for Death of a Salesman. During the 2010 “Encore Season,” Blue Bridge presented critically-acclaimed productions of Loot, Hank Williams – the Show He Never Gave and A Streetcar Named Desire, a multi-awardwinning production staring Thea Gill as Blanche Dubois. This summer, the acclaimed theatre company welcomes Oscar-nominated actress Meg Tilly to the Victoria stage for Edward Albee’s Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? Playing July 5 to 17 at the McPherson Playhouse, the dark comedy portrays a husband and wife, George and Martha, in a 18

searing night of dangerous fun and games. “By the evening’s end, a stunning, almost unbearable revelation provides a climax that has shocked audiences for years.” Come August, Blue Bridge heats up the stage with Paul Ledoux & David Young’s Fire, August 2 to 14. “Inspired by the lives of Jerry Lee Lewis and Reverend Jimmy Swaggart (who learned how to play on the same piano) Fire traces the rise and fall of Cale and Herchel Blackwell, the sons of a Southern preacher. Featuring classic ‘50s rock hits and timeless gospel tunes, Fire has rocked the socks off and elevated the souls of audiences across Canada since its premiere in 1985.” Did you know? The soon-to-be-replaced "Blue Bridge,” also known as the Johnson Street Bridge, is an iconic image of the Victoria coastline, linking downtown Victoria with the communities of Vic West and Esquimalt.

HOT ART Fair & Lovely Summer Show Celebrate summer at Winchester Galleries’ downtown gallery at the Belvedere, hosting new work by Kenna Fair July 9 to 23. Join the Humboldt Street gallery for an opening reception Saturday, July 9 from 2 to 4pm with the artist in attendance. As a fifth-generation northern Vancouver Islander, Fair’s work reflects a deep-seated connection to the landscapes and life-forms of the West Coast. Whether turning her discerning eye to the world ‘above’ – through her depiction of the vast array of birds populating the Pacific Northwest – or to the range of creatures stirring in tidal pools and below the oceans, her paintings “compel viewers into an enhanced state of attentiveness to the beauty that surrounds us. “Fair’s treatment of light, vivid use of colour and richly textured works bring the eco-systems she renders to life and beckon us to look beyond the surface and see the minute details in our midst.” Judi Dyelle, Pierced plate

HOT DINING

A New Era for Aura

PHOTO COURTESY INN AT LAUREL POINT

Aura and the Inn at Laurel Point have welcomed Executive Chef Takashi Ito to their kitchen. Ito is excited to be working for a smaller boutique-style hotel, where he can set his own individual stamp on dining in Victoria and help mentor, along with Executive Sous Chef Patrick Gayler, a dynamic team of young chefs. “I am in love with Victoria and Vancouver Island. The ingredients and culinary talent available to us are truly amazing,” says Ito, also a passionate ice carver who has competed in cooking and carving across the country and around the world. “To be able to stay where I can indulge in my love of wine and local ingredients, and really focus on what I adore doing best – creating and teaching – this is a dream come true.” Look for a new Ito-inspired menu this summer, including more vegetarian and vegan options, perfect for patio season.

PICNIC PICKS Looking for something special to take out on your Victoria adventures? Here are five of our favourite picks for summer meals on the go: 1. Fresh, light Japanese cuisine from Azuma Sushi is both tasty and portable. 2. Haultain Fish & Chips – light and flaky fish paired with crispy chips. 3. Try Pig Barbecue Joint for succulent pulled pork and other treats. 4. Choose Chinese cuisine to eat in or out at Wing’s. 5. Ottavio Italian Bakery & Deli – choose your favourite cheeses, meats and sweets or let Ottavio’s experts create a delicious sandwich for you.

Little Thai Place Cooks Up Anywhere If you’ve enjoyed the flavours of the Little Thai Place during your Victoria visit, you can now cook up some of those delicious dishes in your own kitchen, at the office, while camping...just about anywhere with a microwave or stovetop. The popular restaurant’s innovative meals – which currently include red, green and yellow curries served with rice – are available for approximately $5 from a growing list of grocery stores, including Fairway Markets, Country Grocer, the Market on Yates and Millstream, Red Barn, Wellburns and Peppers. Launched in 2003, Little Thai Place has grown with client demand to four restaurants, adding locations on Shelbourne Street, Cook Street near Caledonia, in the Reflections building on Langford’s Veterans Memorial Parkway, and in West Saanich at the Royal Oak Shopping Centre. All offer a choice of in-restaurant dining, take-out ke-out and delivery. ery.

NEIGHBOURHOODS INNER HARBOUR /DOWNTOWN The Inner Harbour is the most often photographed and most easily recognized place in Victoria, and home to several renowned landmarks, including the Legislative Buildings and The Fairmont Empress Hotel. The Causeway is one of the city’s best people-watching spots and during the summer is alive with artists and street performers entertaining the crowds. Nearby, Bastion Square is the site of the original Fort Victoria and currently home to great shops, restaurants, and attractions, including the Maritime Museum. Other downtown attractions not to miss include the Royal BC Museum, the National Geographic IMAX Theatre, the Victoria Bug Zoo, Miniature World and the Royal London Wax Museum. Shoppers will love Government Street, Antique Row (Fort Street) and The Bay Centre. Take in views of the Inner Harbour with a stroll along the pedestrian-only walkway beginning near Belleville and Menzies streets and following the waterfront over the blue Johnson Street Bridge into the neighbourhoods of Vic West and Esquimalt. NEIGHBOURHOODS NEAR DOWNTOWN Several picturesque, historic neighbourhoods surround downtown and are within easy walking distance. Just south of downtown, James Bay is Victoria’s oldest residential neighbourhood, bordered by water on three sides and Beacon Hill Park on the fourth. Beacon Hill has been Victoria’s best-loved green space since the 1850s, with pathways, gardens and a seasonal children’s petting zoo. On the east side of the park is Fairfield, a residential

TO THE RESCUE! Step into the shoes of some of the world’s bravest this summer when RESCUE: Disaster Response hits the IMAX bigscreen. RESCUE propels audiences into the extreme, high-stakes world of disaster response, where lives dangle in the balance; where individuals, teams and machines are thrust into chaos in aid of strangers, sometimes into violent human contagions or natural catastrophe, and often at the ends of the Earth. Through the eyes and reflections of the rescuers themselves, IMAX fans get an insider’s view of a passionate commitment to saving lives, as captured in the real-time filming of the response to the disaster in Haiti. neighbourhood with a trendy collection of shops and cafés called Cook Street Village. East of downtown, Rockland is a prestigious area of older, stately homes; attractions include Craigdarroch Castle, Government House Gardens and the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria. Northwest of downtown, over the blue Johnson Street Bridge, Esquimalt is home to Canadian Forces Base Esquimalt. Beautiful Saxe Point Park and CFB Esquimalt’s museum are highlights here. OAK BAY Considered the most British of Victoria’s neighbourhoods, Oak Bay is a charming area of Tudor-styled homes, oak trees and manicured gardens. Oak Bay Village and the Avenue are the main shopping areas with excellent shops and galleries, featuring antiques, art, gifts, china, fashion and jewellery. Great places to enjoy traditional afternoon tea include the White Heather Tea

Room on Oak Bay Avenue. Oak Bay is also one of Victoria’s best cycling areas, especially along Beach Drive, with its spectacular water and mountain views. The Oak Bay Marina and Willows Beach are also popular stops. www.oakbaytourism.com OLD TOWN / CHINATOWN Just north of Bastion Square and the shops of Government Street is the area known as Old Town. During the Gold Rush in the mid-1800s, this area was known as “the other side of the tracks.” Brothels, saloons, hotels and supply stores were the main businesses. Now, Old Town is a popular shopping and dining area. Market Square is the “heart” of Old Town and features a collection of shops and restaurants in restored heritage buildings. Old Town is also known as Victoria’s Home Décor District, and includes such shops as Chintz and Company, Muffet and Louisa and Dig
