Bass, banjo and kazoo, trumpet, trombone, and more – there’s no better way to put a little spring in your spring step. A little later in the month, on April 23, the McPherson Playhouse welcomes the stage version of that favourite childhood picture book, Richard Scarry’s Busytown. Be prepared for plenty of music and audience interaction!

HOT DATES On Stage Armed with the colourful repertoire of uncategorizable American music icon Tom Waits, Quebec City’s L’Orchestre d’Hommes-Orchestres (The One Man Band Band) offer an event that is more of a carnival show or musical circus than just a concert. Coming to the Metro Studio, March 25, this bustling orchestra performs the music of Tom Waits using nearly 100 objects and invented instruments on stage, which they hammer and caress in madcap scenes of unbridled energy. The Belfry Theatre gets busy March 12 to 25 with its annual SPARK Festival, full of new plays, new ideas and a ton of free events, while at the Langham Court Theatre, March brings Rabbit Hole, by David Lindsay-Abaire. How can a family survive when the light of their lives has gone out? This Pulitzer Prize-winning drama offers a view of personal tragedy that is at once mesmerizing and heart-wrenching, but full of compassion, humour and, finally, hope. Opening April 26 is 1959 Pink Thunderbird Convertible, two one-act plays in one from James McLure. In Lone Star, set outside a small town Texas bar, Roy regales his brother, Ray, with stories about his three loves: his country, his wife, and his beloved 1959 pink Thunderbird convertible. In Laundry and Bourbon, Bourbon and gossip flow freely while Elizabeth waits for her wayward husband, Roy, with friends Hattie and Amy Lee. As the bottle empties, past indiscretions and present fears bubble to the surface.

America’s master contemporary ballet choreographer, Alonzo King, brings his LINES Ballet to the Royal Theatre March 9 and 10. Performing two finely honed and polished pieces, Resin and Scheherazade, the dancers will transport the audience “to an ethereal world where time stops and imagination is King.” Come March 16 to 18, Ballet Victoria brings Vivaldi’s Four Seasons to the McPherson Playhouse with new and exciting choreography, live music, poetry and painting – West Coast-style. Guaranteed to recharge your soul! Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet visits April 26 to 28 with Svengali, based on the George du Maurier novel Trilby, created and choreographed by Mark Godden. Yearning for public recognition, Svengali escapes the repression of his mother’s ballet studio and finds the beautiful and malleable young dancer, Trilby. Under Svengali’s entrancing influence, Trilby is transformed into the darling of the ballet world but her star ultimately rises beyond Svengali’s powerful emotional grasp.

SALUTE TO SPRING 1
IN THE GARDEN CITY
From cherry blossoms to a Chinatown tour, here’s 10 of our favourite ways to celebrate spring in the Garden City. OUTDOOR ADVENTURES 1. Spring wouldn’t be spring in Victoria without the blossom-lined streets of downtown and surrounding neighbourhoods. Enjoy a pleasant stroll under these favourite features of Victoria’s prettiest season.
5. Victoria is known for its dynamic waterfront, and there’s no better way to enjoy it than on foot. From downtown, head west along Belleville to Dallas Road and Scenic Marine Drive or north up
2. Blossoms of every variety will be blooming at the
JENNIFER BLYTH PHOTOS
Butchart Gardens – bulbs, blooms and flowering trees bring early season colour to the city’s most famous gardens, both with an inside display, Spring Prelude, and outside in the gardens.
Victoria Butterfly Garden
3. Spring-time temperatures often turn warm on southern Vancouver Island and there’s no better time to visit some of the beautiful beaches around the region. Cadboro Bay in Saanich and Willows Beach in Oak Bay are both favourites for locals.
4. History and horticulture combine beautifully in the stunning grounds of Abkhazi Garden, developed by Prince and Princess Abkhazi in 1946, at the majestic Hatley Castle and Park in the West Shore and at Rockland’s Government House Gardens.

Chinatown
7
INDOOR EXPLORATIONS 8. Social history comes alive at Craigdarroch Castle, completed in 1890 for the family of BC coal baron Robert Dunsmuir. Gracious elegance fills the 39 rooms of this majestic mansion that stands tall over the city from its Rockland grounds. A new addition is a series of craft workshops that explores the skills and talents of an earlier time.
9. Head out the Peninsula
Wharf Street then over the Johnson Street Bridge to the West Song Walkway and the communities of Vic West and Esquimalt.
6. If you prefer two wheels to two feet, try a bike ride along a regional treasure: The Galloping Goose and Lochside Trail – 84 kilometres of picturesque trail along a former railway line. Ideal for a scenic tour or a family excursion, take a spin to the Saanich Peninsula or the communities of the West Shore. Victoria’s Scenic Marine Drive is another popular ride for cyclists wanting to appreciate Victoria’s striking waterfront.
7. Step back in time with local historian John Adams and his Discover the Past Tours to explore the rich history of Canada’s oldest Chinatown. Equally intriguing are Adams' popular Ghostly Walks, filled with the spooky and sensational stories from one of Canada’s most haunted cities.
and inside Butterfly Gardens, a lush rainforest environment filled with exotic plants and beautiful free-flying butterflies. Turn your attention skyward at the Centre of the Universe, a visitor interpretive centre, with a planetarium, interpretive displays and more, fascinating for all ages.
10. Spring is a terrific time to spruce up your decor, and you’ve come to the right place in Victoria! If you have a passion for home decorating, venture into Old Town and to what has become known locally as Victoria’s “Home Décor District.” From small, specialty shops to the 20,000 square feet of treasures awaiting at Chintz and Company, there are plenty of shops to explore here. Antique lovers should seek out the wonderful shops of Victoria’s “Antique Row,” also known as Fort Street.

MAGICAL MARQUIS Combining her vibrant youth with an artistic maturity, Annabelle Marquis’s approach to painting is deeply tied to colour and composition. Working with both representational and abstract images, her mixed media collage-inspired canvases strike a graceful balance between fragmentation and beauty. Blending rugged edges and torn paper motifs with painterly brushwork, she has created a dynamic interaction of colour, form and texture. Enjoy work by this remarkable artist at West End Gallery April 14 to 26. Clara's Bouquet, Annabelle Marquis

SPRING INTO A NEW YOU Spring is a time of “new beginnings” – an ideal time to consider cleansing the body of accumulated toxins. The knowledgeable staff at the Vitamin Shop are there to help! In addition to a clean diet, free of heavy and toxic foods, incorporate cleansing herbs and supplements; some excellent cleansing kits are also available to speed up the procedure. Spring time blossoms and pollens tend to bring out people’s allergies. Many natural remedies and formulas have shown to be valuable with this dilemma – ask about Quercetin, known as nature’s antihistamine, which works in response to allergens. Other helpful products to consider include Nettle, Vitamin C and specific homeopathic allergy formulas.
