In the community: Local community festivals are a great way to get to know a neighbourhood and here in the Capital Region, June is the ideal time to come explore! The Oak Bay Tea Party has been a cherished community tradition for more than 50 years, always celebrated the first weekend in June (June 1 and 2 this year). Held at Willows Beach Park, a few minutes' drive from downtown, highlights include a Saturday morning parade, air show, bathtub race and midway, plus plenty of great local food and entertainment. While Oak Bay hosts a tea party, the community of Esquimalt, just over the Johnson Street Bridge from downtown Victoria, takes its inspiration from local pirate lore. In addition to the Saturday morning parade, Buccaneer Days will fill the Archie Browning Arena with games, a midway, entertainment, food, children’s
activities and a community dance. Don’t miss the fun June 8 and 9. Rounding out the month is Sidney Days, June 30 and July 1, celebrating the heritage of the quaint community about 30 minutes from Victoria, at the top of the picturesque Saanich Peninsula. Enjoy a barbecue, parade, music, family activities, boat-building and sailing competition, fireworks and much more!

Explore Shackleton’s Antarctic Adventure, at the National Geographic IMAX Theatre (main image) and the Royal BC Museum's Race to the End of the Earth (below)
Antarctic Explorations History and geography buffs have been eagerly awaiting the opening the Royal BC Museum exhibit Race to the End of the Earth, opening May 17. Co-produced by the Royal BC Museum, the travelling exhibit recounts one of the most stirring tales of exploration – the dramatic 1911 contest to reach the South Pole. Two Antarcticbound explorers, the Englishman Robert Falcon Scott and the Norwegian Roald Amundsen, led teams through harrowing conditions to see who would reach the pole first. Race to the End of the Earth brings history to life while exploring how these dangerous journeys paved the way for modern day polar research. An exhibition preview and feature presentation May 16 features exhibit curator Dr. Ross MacPhee, from the American Museum of Natural History, who will take you beyond the exhibition, recounting a gripping tale of antarctic adventure and tragedy. The museum is also hosting the special Quest: Antarctic Adventures Lecture Series, kicking off June 6 with Hayley Shephard, wilderness guide and author who in 2010 was the first person to attempt a solo sea kayak journey around South Georgia Island, north of Antarctica. A
lecture series full line-up is available at www. royalbcmuseum.bc.ca While exploring the Royal BC Museum exhibit, don’t miss a stop at the National Geographic IMAX Theatre, also on-site. Summer of 2013 will be plucked from the pages of history, when in conjunction with Race to the End of the Earth, the theatre will present Shackleton’s Antarctic Adventure, which tells the extraordinary true story of a third polar explorer, Sir Ernest Shackleton, and his now-legendary 1914 to 1916 British Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition. While never accomplishing its goal of the first crossing of the Antarctic continent, the expedition has become a testament to heroism and human endurance, with all 28 men surviving nearly two years in the frigid Antarctic when their ship was caught in pack ice and eventually crushed. Take a tour of local art The communities of Metchosin and East Sooke are home to a large number of artists and artisans in all disciplines who find inspiration amid the rolling landscape and lush rain forests near the sea. While past years have seen the artists open their galleries and studios for two annual tours, this year they’re changing things up with a year-round Stinking Fish Studio Guide. Come explore one of the richest “art trails” on the island – meet the artists, see their work and take some home with you! All are welcome and artworks are for sale. Why Stinking Fish? When explorer James Douglas asked local First Nations what they called the area now known as Metchosin, they answered “S-met-sho-sun,” which literally means “stinking fish.” Find more information, including a link to the guide, at www.stinkingfishstudiotour.com

Walk this way: exploring the city’s history on foot Victoria boasts a fascinating history and one of the most fun ways to explore it is with a Discover the Past walking tour. New this season are Victoria History Walks, beginning June 6. Behind Victoria’s old-world charm lie tales of eccentric characters, heroic deeds, intrigue, love, humour, smuggling and other nefarious crimes. Hear from experienced guides what you won’t find in the Jennifer Blyth photo history books. Tours take 90 minutes and start Fridays and Saturdays at 8:30pm from in front of the Wharf Street Visitor Centre. Explore Victoria’s historic Chinatown with a morning walk offered year-round on Saturdays. From June 6, additional Chinatown walks are offered Tuesday and Thursday mornings.
