Royal REASON TO CELEBRATE
Royal BC Museum celebrates Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee Join the Royal BC Museum for a special exhibit of personal portraits of Queen Elizabeth II as the monarch celebrates her diamond jubilee this summer. Opening June 1 and continuing through summer to September 3, this special exhibition of portraits by royal photographer Cecil Beaton (1904-1980) depicts Queen Elizabeth II in her roles as princess, monarch and mother. The exhibition will include a number of previously unpublished images alongside extracts from Beaton’s personal diaries and letters. The photographs are drawn exclusively from the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Beaton’s glittering royal portraits were among the most widely published photographs of the twentieth century and helped to shape the public image of the monarchy around the world. The exhibition explores Beaton’s long relationship with the Queen, who was still a teenage princess when Beaton first photographed her in 1942. Over the next three decades, he would be invited to photograph the Queen on many significant occasions, including the Coronation Day. 6

The exhibit is all the more moving as Beaton’s images depict the Queen and her family both on official occasions and when ‘off-duty.’ Elegant and highly-staged photographs are shown alongside informal glimpses of the royal family at home, interspersed with film and radio footage from the time. Section one, ‘Princess Elizabeth and the Portrait Tradition’, includes charming portraits of a young Princess Elizabeth with her parents and sister Princess Margaret, set against elaborate painted backdrops inspired by the long tradition of royal portraiture. Section two focuses on the Coronation in 1953, when Beaton’s camera captured both the grandeur and emotion of the occasion. In contrast to the splendid Coronation images, Beaton’s photographs in Section three, The Next Generation, reveal a more intimate and relaxed side of family life. The exhibition will draw to a close with ‘The 1968 Sitting’, including a set of portraits of the Queen in a dark admiral’s boat cloak against a plain background, which convey the magnitude of the role of Britain’s monarch.

Numero Uno! Intrepid Theatre presents the 15th annual Uno Fest May 24 to June 3 – an eclectic mix of North America’s finest solo artists. FAB FESTIVALS As if Victoria in the spring wasn’t reason enough to celebrate, May and June also mark the start of festival season. The fun gets under way over the May long-weekend with the Victoria Highland Games, celebrating all things Scottish, before the 61st annual Swiftsure Yacht Race takes to the waters off Greater Victoria the following weekend, May 26 to 28. The first weekend in June is given over to the Oak Bay Tea Party – actually a community party with parade, midway, games, entertainment and more. Next, the community of Esquimalt, across the Johnson Street Bridge from downtown, celebrates its nautical heritage with Buccaneer Days June 8 to 10. Just in time for Canada Day, Sidney Days celebrates June 30 and July 1 with many festive events scheduled. June is also the season for the performing arts, including Uno Fest, a unique international festival devoted to the power of the one-person show May 24 to June 3, and the always anticipated Victoria International JazzFest, June 22 to July 1. NEIGHBOURHOODS INNER HARBOUR / DOWNTOWN The Inner Harbour is the most often photographed and most easily recognized place in Victoria, and home to several renowned landmarks, including the Legislative Buildings and The Fairmont Empress Hotel. The Causeway is one of the city’s best people-watching spots. Nearby, Bastion Square is the site of the original Fort Victoria and currently home to great shops, restaurants, and attractions, including the Maritime Museum. Other downtown attractions include the Royal BC Museum, the National Geographic IMAX Theatre, the Victoria Bug Zoo and Miniature World. Shoppers will love Government Street, Antique Row (Fort Street) and The Bay Centre. Take in views of the Inner Harbour with a stroll along the pedestrian walkway beginning near Belleville and Menzies streets and following the waterfront over the blue Johnson Street Bridge into neighbouring Vic West and Esquimalt. NEIGHBOURHOODS NEAR DOWNTOWN Several picturesque, historic neighbourhoods surround downtown and are within easy walking distance. Just south of downtown, James Bay is Victoria’s oldest residential neighbourhood, bordered by water on three sides and Beacon Hill Park on the fourth. Beacon Hill has been Victoria’s best-loved green space since the 1850s, with pathways, gardens and a seasonal children’s petting zoo. On the east side of the park is Fairfield, a residential neighbourhood with a trendy collection of shops and cafés called Cook Street Village. East of downtown, Rockland is a prestigious area of older, stately homes; attractions include

DELVE BENEATH THE SALISH SEA Venture out the Saanich Peninsula to Sidney-by-the-Sea and the Shaw Ocean Discovery Centre where you can explore the weird and wacky ways that animals eat, and discover who eats who in the Salish Sea food web. OAK BAY Considered the most British of Victoria’s neighbourhoods, Oak Bay is a charming area of Tudor-styled homes, oak trees and manicured gardens. Oak Bay Village and the Avenue are the main shopping areas with excellent shops and galleries, featuring antiques, art, gifts, china, fashion and jewellery. SAANICH AND CORDOVA BAY Saanich is a large residential area beginning north of downtown. Highlights include Mt. Douglas Park, with hiking trails and panoramic views of the city from its drive-to summit, Elk/Beaver Lake Park, a great spot for watersports, walking and fishing, Glendale Gardens and Woodland, Swan Lake/Christmas Hill Nature Sanctuary, the Dominion Astrophysical Observatory and the Centre of the Universe. OLD TOWN / CHINATOWN Just north of Bastion Square and the shops of Government Street is Old Town.
