HOT HOTDATES DATES The Barra MacNeils celebrate the season November 18.

Holiday Happenings From the twinkling lights of the Butchart Gardens’ winter displays to the annual presentation of Nutcracker, Victoria celebrates the holidays in a big way. The Barra MacNeils’ Christmas offers a musical start to the season November 18 when the talented family brings their captivating harmonies to the Alix Goolden Hall. Theatre fans will delight to The Belfry Theatre’s November 13 to December 16 presentation of Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, while for dancers, the magic of Nutcracker is a holiday must – enjoy it this year with Vancouver’s Goh Ballet and the Victoria Symphony, November 30 to December 2. Head to Centennial Square November 17 for the annual holiday tree light-up, including entertainment, ice sculptures and treats before the Island Farms Santa Light Parade illuminates downtown Victoria. The holiday parades continue December 1 when the IEOA Truck Light Convoy and Food Drive follows an array of cheerfully illuminated trucks through the streets of the Capital Region, delighting onlookers and collecting donations for the local food bank.

Oak Bay Avenue turns the lights on for its celebrated holiday display November 25. Head to “The Avenue” for the 12th annual Oak Bay Village Light-up, with festivities beginning at 2:30pm, including children’s entertainment, street food and music. Help count down to the light-up at 5pm when Santa arrives by fire truck to hear children’s Christmas wishes. The 19th-century Craigdarroch Castle is transformed for the holidays with its historic rooms decorated in traditional Victorian fashion – see period toys peeking out from beneath the Christmas trees and beautiful boughs decorating the mantels. While browsing the beautifully restored castle, enjoy a varies selection of music and children’s performances throughout December. Visit the Fairmont Empress Hotel for the annual Festival of Trees, showing through the New Year in support of BC Children’s Hospital, stop by Market Square December 1 for the rousing Tuba Christmas, and at Victoria Butterfly Gardens, don't miss Christmas in the Jungle through December, including a special evening light display. Wish You Were Here Theatre isn’t just for grown-ups when Victoria’s long-standing children’s company, Kaleidoscope Theatre hits the stage. This winter, journey Pan PAN, MILES LOWRY PHOTO to Neverland November 24 to December 1 when the company presents Pan, a brand new multi-media adaptation of JM Barrie’s classic tale at the McPherson Playhouse.

MAG hosts Stinking Fish artists Some 23 artists and artisans from the West Coast communities of Metchosin and Sooke come together at the Metchosin Art Gallery – MAG – for a month-long exhibition November 2 to 30. While traditionally this Stinking Fish Artist Group – named for the First Nations word for the community of Metchosin – hosts two tours a year, one in summer and one in winter, this November they opted to host a longer exhibit at the community's brand new gallery space. Enjoy a leisurely 30-minute drive to this picturesque farming community that provides plenty of inspiration for these talented artists!

Gallery Walk offers a seasonal stroll Enjoy a night of fine art and seasonal festivities November 29 when a selection of downtown Victoria’s finest galleries open their doors for the 15th annual Gallery Walk. Participants include Madrona Gallery, Winchester Galleries (Modern and Humboldt), West End Gallery, View Art Gallery, Legacy Gallery and Alcheringa Gallery, welcoming the season with music, refreshments and plenty of holiday fun – a great way to get a jump on your Christmas shopping and enjoy a unique Vict oria art tour at the same time! Oak Bay welcomes art lovers the following week for the Art on the Avenue Gallery Walk, December 6. Visit the beautifully decorated Oak Bay Avenue where a fine collection of art galleries and merchants feature special exhibits, music and seasonal treats. This explosion of free dance classes in all kinds of styles in studios all over town offers more than 75 events over 10 days, including dance fitness, dance demos, site-specific performances, open rehearsals and more. February 1 and 2 brings Montreal’s RubberbanDANCE Group to the McPherson Playhouse with The Gravity of Center, choreographed by Victor Quijada, who “succeeds in containing the ferocity of hip hop in a refined choreographic language.” Vancouver’s Joe Laughlin presents 25 Years of Dance February 6 and 7, featuring three of his favourite pieces as well as the premiere of a new work commissioned by Dance Victoria for Ballet Victoria dancers, while later in the month Seattle’s Pacific Northwest Ballet presents a beautiful, richly textured ballet that includes signature works by Balanchine, Robbins and Wheeldon, February 22 and 23 at the Royal Theatre.

Stage Struck Theatre fans are blessed with an abundance of possibilities this winter, from the humourous to the heart-wrenching. Langham Court Theatre, a charming theatre a few minutes from downtown, presents the Oscar Wilde classic Lady Windermere's Fan November 21 to December 8, a comedy of misunderstandings, hidden identities, fluttering fans, whispered gossip and a touching reconciliation. Come the New

Year, Langham Court presents That Face, January 16 to February 2, Polly Stenham's hard-hitting, intense and visceral dissection of children who become parents to their parents and a family at the breaking point. The University of Victoria’s Phoenix Theatre presents Bertolt Brecht’s Good Person of Setzuan November 8 to 24, a classic morality tale, re-set to a modern-day industrialized China, in which a young woman struggles to maintain her goodness in a corrupt business world. Come February 14 to 23, the theatre turns its attention to Reasons To Be Pretty, Neil LaBute’s hard-hitting, yet humourous contemporary drama in which four friends and lovers delve into the layers between self-image and self-esteem. After launching its winter season with the classic A Christmas Carol, the Belfry Theatre continues January 22 to February 24 with Australian Andrew Bovell’s fascinating and erotic play Speaking in Tongues, “a thoroughly modern mystery (that) twists and turns in spooky and unexpected ways.” Following February 12 to March 3 is Helen’s Necklace, by Carole Fréchette, where in the heart of a chaotic Middle Eastern city, Helen, a Canadian, tries to retrace her steps in the hopes of finding a lost necklace. Theatre Inconnu welcomes winter with its production of Murray Gold's Kafka the Musical, November 27 to December 15, an accessible, touching and often hilarious portrait of the playwright. While the Royal BC Museum does a fantastic job of preserving and presenting British Columbiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s rich history, the internationally renowned facility also strives to bring the world to Victorians through a variety of special programs and exhibitions. This winter, the global picture is diverse indeed.

Through January 27, the museum presents Envisioning the World: the First Printed Maps, exploring the fascinating world of maps and how more than 300 years of exploration challenged the long-established visions of the world. One of last year’s favourite exhibits returns to the museum with Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2012, November 30 to April 1. This visually striking exhibition from The Museum of Natural History showcases more than 100 new photographs in 18 categories (including Young Wildlife Photographer of the Year, Endangered Wildlife, One Earth and Photojournalist of the Year), chosen from thousands of international entries. Each photo and accompanying caption tells the inspirational, astonishing and sometimes humorous stories of our fascinating natural world. CHRISTMAS WITH KEN LAVIGNE Victoria’s Ken Lavigne will welcome the holiday season December 3 in what has become a tradition for many – a Christmas concert featuring a host of favourite tunes performed at the historic Royal Theatre. NEIGHBOURHOODS INNER HARBOUR / DOWNTOWN The Inner Harbour is the most often photographed and most easily recognized place in Victoria, and home to several renowned landmarks, including the Legislative Buildings and The Fairmont Empress Hotel. The Causeway is one of the city’s best people-watching spots. Nearby, Bastion Square is the site of the original Fort Victoria and currently home to great shops, restaurants, and attractions, including the Maritime Museum. Other downtown attractions include the Royal BC Museum, the National Geographic IMAX Theatre, the Victoria Bug Zoo and Miniature World. Shoppers will love Government Street, Antique Row (Fort Street) and The Bay Centre. Take in views of the Inner Harbour with a stroll along the pedestrian walkway beginning near Belleville and Menzies streets and following the waterfront over the blue Johnson Street Bridge into neighbouring Vic West and Esquimalt. NEIGHBOURHOODS NEAR DOWNTOWN Several picturesque, historic neighbourhoods surround downtown and are within easy walking distance. Just south of downtown, James Bay is Victoria’s oldest residential neighbourhood, bordered by water on three sides and Beacon Hill Park on the fourth. Beacon Hill has been Victoria’s best-loved green space since the 1850s, with pathways, gardens and a seasonal children’s petting zoo. On the east side of the park is Fairfield, a residential neighbourhood with a trendy collection of shops and cafés called Cook Street Village. Northwest of downtown, over the Johnson Street Bridge, Esquimalt is home to CFB Esquimalt, beautiful Saxe Point Park and CFB Esquimalt’s museum. OAK BAY Considered the most British of Victoria’s neighbourhoods, Oak Bay is a charming area of Tudor-styled homes, oak trees and manicured gardens. Oak Bay Village and the Avenue are the main shopping areas with excellent shops and galleries, featuring antiques, art, gifts, china, fashion and jewellery. Great places to enjoy traditional afternoon tea include the White Heather Tea Room on Oak Bay Avenue. Oak Bay is also one of Victoria’s best cycling areas, especially along Beach Drive, with its spectacular water and mountain views. During the Gold Rush in the mid1800s, this area was known as “the other side of the tracks.” Now, Old Town is a popular shopping and dining area. Market Square is the “heart” of Old Town and features a collection of shops and restaurants in restored heritage buildings. Victoria’s Chinatown is the oldest in Canada. The Gate of Harmonious Interest is a landmark constructed to recognize Chinese immigrants’ participation in establishing the City of Victoria. SAANICH AND CORDOVA BAY Saanich is a large residential area beginning north of downtown. Highlights include Mt. Douglas Park, with hiking trails and panoramic views of the city from its drive-to summit, Elk/Beaver Lake Park, a great spot for watersports, walking and fishing, Glendale Gardens and Woodland, Swan Lake/Christmas Hill Nature Sanctuary, the Dominion Astrophysical Observatory and the Centre of the Universe. Just east of Elk/Beaver Lake Park is the seaside neighbourhood of Cordova Bay, valued for its rural beauty and unparalleled views of Haro Strait and the San Juan Islands.
