HOT HOTDATES DATES Ballet Victoria’s Amadeus
En Pointe Seen through the envious eyes and skewed memory of aging Mozart contemporary Antonio Salieri, Peter Shaffer’s awardwinning Amadeus chronicles their tumultuous rivalry. Presented on stage by Ballet Victoria March 12 to 21, audiences will delight in this entertaining interpretation of one of the world’s great musical geniuses. Up next for the local company is Annie’s Rodeo and Other Works, featuring “Little Sure Shot,” Annie Oakley, the star attraction of Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show, entertaining royals like Queen Victoria and Kaiser Wilhelm II. Enjoy a riveting score, with a dash of rock and roll, performed by a live orchestra, at Victoria’s historic Royal Theatre May 29 and 30. From Dance Victoria comes Salt Lake City’s contemporary Ballet West, at the Royal Theatre April 24 and 25. Annie’s Rodeo Featuring 18 of their finest dancers, this full program will emphasize the company’s remarkable range, from Mercurial Landscape’s beautifully choreographed meditation for eight couples set to Vivaldi’s Four Seasons to Val Caniparoli’s The Lottery, based on Shirley Jackson’s classic short story, a chilling tale of conformity gone mad.
ON THE DESK Spring is arguably Victoria’s most beautiful season, with numerous activities and destinations vying for your time and attentions. So...what shouldn’t you miss? Here’s a few suggestions from the city’s guest service experts. At downtown’s awardwinning Magnolia Hotel, concierge Brandon Lachance suggests garden lovers go off the beaten track a little to visit Finnerty Gardens at the University of Victoria. Free to enter and just 20 minutes from downtown, “there’s no better time to see the rhododendrons in bloom.” (Map 2J8) From the Inn at Laurel Point Guest Services, Ryan Cox says a visit to Beacon Hill Park and the scenic marine drive along Dallas Road is a must. With Victoria’s warm, sunny spring, bikes can be a great way to enjoy the local scenery, or enjoy a more leisurely stroll through the picturesque landscape. (Map 1) The view from Scenic Marine Drive

On exhibit through May 3, the retrospective draws together landmark Marimekko fabrics and fashions created by pioneering designers during the 1960s and ‘70s. Lengths of fabric from the time period include the company’s most famous designs, such as “Unikko,” which today, some 50 years later, is one of the

Presented in Italian with English surtitles, the production showcases Jee Hye Han in her debut in the title role of the geisha who renounces her family to marry an American. On the Path to Varekai Cirque du Soleil returns to Victoria this spring with Varekai, a captivating forest at the summit of a volcano inhabited by whimsical and enchanted creatures. Descending into the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre May 27 to 31, when the sky lets go a solitary young man, the story of Varekai begins. Parachuted into the shadows of a magical forest, a kaleidoscopic world imbued with fantastical creatures, a young man takes flight in an adventure both absurd and extraordinary. The word Varekai (pronounced ver.ay.kie) means “wherever” in the Romany language and this production pays tribute to the nomadic soul, to the spirit and art of the circus tradition, and to those who quest with infinite passion along the path that leads to Varekai.
Fabulous Fish Art The Shaw Ocean Discovery Centre welcomes kids for a little hands-on fun and learning. Take in Sea Shirt Sunday, April 5 and May 3 from 1 to 3pm, a chance to try fish printing on fabric. Bring a shirt, pillowcase or cloth bag to adorn with fish art (cost is regular admission, plus $2 per item for fabric paint). Come May 18, it’s time to “Go with the Flow,” a day full of fun learning about the watercycle, local watersheds, connections between land and sea and our affect on watershed health. Activities include “build a watershed,” watershed bingo and more! Free with admission.
FESTIVAL SEASON FAVES
While Victoria may be known as the City of Gardens, there’s much to recommend it as the City of Festivals as well. Even better, all the fun kicks off this spring. As Victoria’s cultural season draws to a close, it does so with a series of fabulous festivals, beginning with the Belfry Theatre’s SPARK Festival, March 9 to 22, an annual festival of new plays and new ideas. Highlights include an audacious trio of dance-plays by Anita Majumdar, Boys With Cars, Let Me Borrow That Top and Fish Eyes, plus The God That Comes, created by Hawksley Workman and Christian Barry with live music and performance by Workman, and Through the Gaze of a Navel, a 60-minute performance yoga class created by Anita Rochon and Emelia Symington Fedy (you can participate in the show or just watch). Following is the third annual Family Theatre Festival, May 1 to 3 at Centennial Square. Offering dynamic entertainment for the whole family, enjoy works from Intrepid Theatre, Theatre SKAM, Puente Theatre with the Old Trout Puppet Workshop and Kaleidoscope –
including the launch of Kaleidoscope’s new inflatable igloo theatre! Theatre of singular intent continues Victoria’s festival season. Hosted by Intrepid Theatre May 8 to 24, Uno Fest has earned a welldeserved reputation as Canada’s premiere juried festival of solo performance, with its carefully curated mix of the personal, the profound, the hilarious and the unexpected. The 18th installment of the festival features 20 shows and 38 performances from Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver, Victoria, Portland and the UK in two venues in beautiful downtown Victoria. A sharable five-show pass is an easy way to experience all the fun – see five shows yourself, or bring a friend or two. In 1858, word of gold rang out in British Columbia’s Fraser Canyon, setting off a dramatic migration of people and propelling this once-remote region of western North America into the modern age. Opening May 13 and continuing through fall, Royal BC Museum’s Gold Rush! El Dorado in BC tells the fascinating stories of adventure, heartbreak and upheaval as everything
changed forever with the gold rushes of the late 1800s. Museum curators and exhibition designers will bring the gold rush to life through its unparalleled collection of rare artifacts, archival photographs and original historical documents. Explore how everything changed during this fevered era, as class and racial barriers were broken down and people seized the extraordinary opportunities

Going Solo at West End West End Gallery welcomes spring with two solo exhibitions of new works. Work by Patricia Johnston graces the gallery walls March 14 to 26, followed April 25 to May 7 by paintings from Annabelle Marquis.
PATRICIA JOHNSTON, SOLSTICE TOFINO
Capturing arresting images of the West Coast, Johnston’s paintings are almost photographic in quality while still maintaining a painterly effect. Dramatic sunsets, crashing waves and miles of sandy West Coast beaches offer magnetic vistas drawing the viewer further into the landscape. The Montreal-based Marquis combines collage with paint, creating works simultaneously crystalline and organic. “Creating a dynamic
interaction of form, colour and texture, she paints spontaneous and magnetic abstracts as well as striking figures including: majestic lions, elegant koi and dramatic bulls.” Join the gallery for the opening reception April 25 from 1 to 4pm. Rounding out the West End calendar May 16 to 28 is the premier exhibition from Alain Bédard, who after studying under renowned Canadian painter Claude A. Simard, has developed a distinct style based on his travels, love of architecture and brilliant use of colour. Bédard will be on hand for the opening reception May 16 from 1 to 4pm.
Colours in Time Local painter Nancy Ruhl provides the perfect way to celebrate spring with her exhibit Victoria: Colours in Time, showing at Madrona Gallery April 11 to 25.

Eclectic spring line-up Oak Bay’s Eclectic Gallery presents an exciting spring line-up, opening with Jim McFarland to April 4.
