Westshore shows & tours welcome art lovers Each summer, the artists and artisans of Metchosin and East Sooke throw open their galleries and studios for the Stinking Fish Summer Studio Tour. This year, fibre artists, jewellers, potters, painters and printmakers will all welcome visitors from 10am to 5pm August 3 to 12. Why stinking fish? Continue your artistic explorations a little further west to the 26th annual Sooke Fine Arts Show, a 10-day celebration of the visual arts that draws some 8,000 art lovers to the coastal town of Sooke July 28 to August 6. HOT DINING
Summertime and the livin’ is easy: Best bests for beer & a burger Greater Victoria has earned a welldeserved reputation for its fine craft brewing industry which uses timehonoured traditional techniques and the bounty of the local farmland to create award-winning beers. And with the laid-back Island lifestyle, paired with a vibrant agricultural scene, is it any wonder local chefs also make some of the best burgers? In James Bay, Heron Rock Bistro’s Fat Buoy Burger of naturally raised BC ranchlands beef with chipotle onion relish finds the perfect pairing in the three selections from Lighthouse Brewery on tap, brewed right over the Johnson Street bridge in Esquimalt. Prefer to craft your own burger creation? Check out the menu’s “burger bar,” with additions such a Stilton cheese, pulled pork and a fried egg. Swans Brewpub has won numerous awards for the beers crafted in its adjacent Buckerfield’s Brewery, which range from the mild-tasting Arctic Lager to Buckerfield’s Bitter to the fresh Raspberry Ale. From the pub menu, the simply titled Swans Burger is a favourite – with a beer-infused patty, of course! Prefer something a little different? The halibut, salmon and vegetarian mushroom burgers all offer plenty of tasty options! The Pink Bicycle Burger Joint has earned a reputation as one of the best places for a burger in town, sourcing ingredients close to

home for ultimate freshness. Savour selections ranging from the basic Pink Bike Cheese Burger to the Blue Cheese Lamb Burger and even the “Metchosin Mutton” topped with local Gruyere and mint mayo – yum! There’s more than tea brewing at the iconic Fairmont Empress this summer. From the hotel’s honeybee program, which brings 10 hives and 800,000 bees to the hotel’s Centennial Garden, the hotel and local Hoyne Brewery have created the Empress Honey Wheat Ale – the ideal beverage to enjoy on the Fairmont’s veranda, overlooking the picturesque Inner Harbour. Other good choices? Fatburger has brought its popular brand of casual dining to Victoria while BC residents are often loyal to White Spot restaurants’ Legendary Burgers – delicious with a Nat Bailey pale ale or lager.
Drive on in...and back in time In celebration its 40th anniversary, Paul’s Motor Inn is bringing back the once-popular drive-in concept, complete with carhops serving classic fare on window-hung trays. On weekends through summer, Paul’s drive-in menu will feature traditional meals from a bygone era – hamburgers, foot-long hotdogs, fries, sundaes, banana splits and sodas. 30
