Alberta Ballet's The Nutcracker

HOT DATES Sights & Sounds of the Season There are few better places to celebrate the holiday season than Victoria, where often mild winter temperatures are perfect for enjoying the local attractions and neighbourhoods decked out for the holidays. The Village of Oak Bay gets things going November 27 with the annual Christmas Festival Light Up – when a flick of the switch sets thousands of Christmas lights a-twinkling on buildings, trees and lampposts. Enjoy entertainment, pictures with Santa Claus and more. The lights come on at 5pm! December 1 brings the Art on the Avenue Gallery Walk in Oak Bay, when shops and galleries open for special art openings and receptions from 6 to 8pm, then on December 3, the Island Equipment Operators Association Parade of Lighted Trucks comes to the Village on its way through town. Get sentimental when Brian Jackson conducts the Victoria Symphony in a Sentimental Christmas, at the Royal Theatre December 9 to 11, then on December 17, Canadian fiddler Ashley MacIsaac joins the symphony for some seasonal favourites. Theatre Inconnu explores the meaning of the holidays December 18 to 24 with a two-person adaptation of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, whose run will include performances at historic Emily Carr House, in addition to Little Fernwood Hall.

From December 2 to 4, Dance Victoria presents Alberta Ballet and the Victoria Symphony in The Nutcracker, which played to standing ovations in 2009. A Christmas tradition for many, Emmy Award-winner Zack Brown’s opulent costumes and sets firmly plant this family production in Imperialist Russia. Step back in time at Craigdarroch Castle, decorated for the holidays in elaborate Victorian fashion throughout December. Various activities will include an adaptation of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, curator’s dinners, children’s craft activities, family nights, live music, and guided tours of the Castle featuring a historical overview of Christmas in Canada. The holidays are extra special at St. Ann’s Academy National Historic Site, decked for the holidays inside and out. The Chapel will be decorated with the traditional Nativity painting created in 1900 by St. Ann’s art teacher, Sister Mary Osithe, a wax baby Jesus dating from the late 19th century and cascading poinsettias to further set the scene. Also at St. Ann’s is Tidings of Comfort and Joy: A Celebration of Music for the Season, a series of four Sunday afternoon concerts November 27 to December 18. See the holiday in tropical style when Victoria Butterfly Gardens illuminates its magical setting, then don't miss a trip to the Butchart Gardens to enjoy thousands of twinkling lights and brilliant Christmas displays. Wedding song Pacific Opera Victoria presents the world premiere performance of Mary’s Wedding, featuring music by Andrew P. MacDonald and libretto by Stephen Massicotte. With performances November 10, 12, 16, 18 and 20 at the McPherson Playhouse, this new opera commissioned and developed by Pacific Opera Victoria “is a love letter to the power of memory and innocence, and to a generation of Canadians who were caught in the crucible of the First World War.” The opera explores the fleeting nature of time and the lasting power of love, evoking Prairie thunderstorms and ladies’ teas, and, as innocence rides off to war, the horror of the battles of Ypres and Moreuil Wood, in which Canada came of age as a nation.

An unparalleled choreographer, McGregor presents this breathtaking, hour-long trip through a soundscape created by Coldplay and Massive Attack collaborator Jon Hopkins and awardwinning composer Joby Talbot. “ENTITY is a staggering blend of bodies, lights, technology and film that mark McGregor at the cutting edge of contemporary culture. Technically astonishing, emotionally uncompromising and hard-hitting, McGregor’s work breaks boundaries and defies categorization. Bodies twist and pull, reach and fall...wild abandon contained in a strong form.”

Artistic Season

SALUTE TO VICTORIA’S

The Belfry Theatre

JO-ANN RICHARDS-WORKS PHOTOGRAPHY/COURTESY THE BELFRY

Winter in Victoria brings shorter days for sure, but it also brings a thriving arts calendar with plenty to entertain.

STAGE STRUCK The University of Victoria's Phoenix Theatre continues its 2011-12 season with Ben Travers' witty, fast-paced Rookery Nook, November 3 to 19. Comparable to the comedies of Noel Coward, the tale follows two fun-loving friends who get caught in a tangled web of silly white lies and flirtatious innuendos. 10

where.ca // WINTER 2011 - 2012

Following in February is Sarah Ruhl’s Eurydice, a reimagining of the classic myth of Orpheus and the Underworld through the eyes of its quirky heroine, Eurydice – “a magical and little menacing twist on an age-old tale.” From the city’s historic Belfry Theatre comes David French’s Jitters, November 15 to December 18. As a new play is poised to open, plunge into a hilarious world of larger-than-life personalities, easily bruised egos, faulty props, lost lines and a visit from a bigtime producer – all adding to the opening night “jitters” of cast, crew, writer and director.

If the stage lights call, Victoria’s arts scene has plenty to offer. Come January, it’s time for on the edge at the Belfry January 24 to February 26, featuring Susinn McFarlen in a tour de force performance exploring three women from three very different walks of life. Langham Court Theatre is one of Victoria's longest -standing companies for good reason. This winter, enjoy The Beauty Queen of Leenane, November 17 to December 3, featuring drama, suspense and black comedy in a small Irish village. The stage takes on a musical tone in January when Langham Court presents The Drowsy Chaperone, a Tony Award-winner recalling the golden age of musical theatre.

DANCE, VICTORIA! Take a time out during the hectic holiday season to enjoy Ballet Victor Victoria’s Cinderella & the Fairy Tale Ball, when da dazzling fairy tale guests offer music, magic, h humour and holiday cheer at the Royal T Theatre December 27 to 30. Dance Victoria’s season con continues with England’s Random Dance, fr from choreographer Wayne McGregor, before we welcoming Alberta Ballet and the Victor Victoria Symphony for the holiday production of The Nutcracker, December 2 to 4. Come Feb February, the Ballet present an evening Nacional de Cuba visits to p of mixed repertoire of classical ballet.

MAKING MUSIC Musical diversity rules this winter as Victoria welcomes shows ranging from Canadian rocker Matthew Good to classic opera. November 10 to 20 presents the world premiere of Pacific Opera Victoria’s Mary’s Wedding: “The story is eternal. Boy meets girl. They fall in love. But the year is 1914, and Mary and Charlie must surrender their love and their fate to the uncertainties of their tumultuous times.” Turning the calendar to February, POV presents Bizet’s Carmen, in French with English surtitles. “Bad, beguiling, and

dangerous to know, Carmen will never let herself be chained down by any one man. When she fixes on Don José as her next (but certainly not her last) lover, the naïve but volatile young soldier hasn’t a chance... Tragedy is inevitable, but what a ride along the way!” On a lighter note, the 80-voice Starlight Pops Choir will get toes tapping in February with Pop Rocks!, featuring classic tunes from Elton John, Rolling Stones, Linda Ronstadt, U2, Coldplay and more, February 3 and 5 at St. Aidan’s United Church, 3703 St. Aidan’s St, about 20 minutes from downtown. For details, visit www.starlightpopschoir.com Greater Victoria Youth Orchestra celebrates a remarkable 26th season with performances November 27 and February 12 at the University of Victoria’s Farquhar Auditorium, under the baton of Yariv Aloni. February’s Salute to the Rat Pack from the Victoria Symphony is sure to be a highlight of the New Year. Join the symphony and vocalist Matt Catingub for a celebration of the music, artistry and songs of Las Vegas and the “Rat Pack,” including I’ve Got You Under My Skin, Night and Day, Ain’t that a Kick in the Head and A Lot of Livin’ To Do. For more performances see pages 17 to 21.

Make it the museum. Victoria is blessed with several fine museums that make it easy to while away an hour, an afternoon or a day! Overlooking the harbour is the Royal BC Museum, with its natural history, First Nations and settlement displays. After close to 20 years without a Western Hockey League team, Victorians were thrilled to welcome the WHL’s Victoria Royals to town this fall. Poe haunts the Maritime Musuem Prepare to embark on a dark, mysterious journey into the life of American poet Edgar Allan Poe when Urban Arts Productions and the Maritime Museum of British Columbia reunite for their critically acclaimed production of Nevermore, continuing November 3 to 5. Staged “in the round” in the museum’s historic Admiral’s Courtroom, this imaginative musical uses Poe’s poetry and short stories as a base for the plot and his shifting obsessions with the women in his life as a catalyst. With hauntingly beautiful melodies, Nevermore breathes new life into Poe’s work and explores a twisted true-life tale as bizarre as his classic stories of the macabre.

HOT DINING PHOTO COURTESY BEAR MOUNTAIN RESORT

Bella! When Adam Walker, restaurant manager at The Westin Bear Mountain Golf Resort and Spa, shared stories of his cycling races in Italy with Executive Chef Iain Rennie, both realized a shared passion for the region’s wines and food. Savour the fruits of these memories at the brand new Bella Montagna, an inspired Italian restaurant at Bear Mountain. “The heart of Bella will be the house-made pastas, prepared fresh daily, with traditional sauces and fresh herbs grown right here in Bear Mountain’s own herb garden. We will also feature an array of gluten-free pastas, and we will be harvesting our organic honey for the creation of our signature creamy gelatos made fresh at the table with liquid nitrogen,” Rennie says. For families, starting at 5pm nightly Bella will offer a “Family Table” for $18 per adult and $9 per child. Enjoy plates of pasta, salads and sauces all served “family style” at your table, followed by dessert. Call 250-3915224 or see bearmountain.ca for details. PHOTO COURTESY THE HOTEL GRAND PACIFIC
