One of the sea’s greatest tales comes to the Royal Theatre this October when Pacific Opera Victoria presents Wagner’s The Flying Dutchman. Performed over selected dates October 6 to 16, in German with English surtitles, the story tells the tale of a spectral ship with black masts and blood red sails, a phantom crew and a cursed seafarer on an endless voyage. In punishment for blasphemy, a captain is doomed to wander the oceans until the end of time. Rest, refuge, even the peace of death, are barred to him unless he finds a woman who will love him until death.

Western adventures
Shopping highlights are focused on several key areas, including the Westshore Town Centre in Langford and Millstream Village west of the Trans Canada Highway. Among the diverse selection of shops you’ll find in the West Shore include Winners, BestBuy and HomeSense. Several town centres also offer a selection of restaurants and smaller boutiques well worth a browse, plus weekend farm markets.
Past the municipalities of Langford and Colwood are picturesque Metchosin and Sooke, a mix of wild waterfront, pastoral farmland and West Coast forest (plus AdrenaLine Zipline Tours). It’s no surprise this setting also inspires many artists – stop by ‘Chosin Pottery to take in the amazing pottery of Robin Hopper and Judy Dyelle. A little farther west, enjoy the beautiful French, China and Botanical beaches.
Tee up! The West Shore is famous for its great golfing, from quaint, family-friendly links to world-class courses like Olympic View and Bear Mountain – boasting two 18-hole, Nicklaus-designed courses! HARVEST TIME Victoria is blessed with an abundance of fertile farmlands a short drive from downtown. The fruits of these lands can be found in local restaurants and farmers’ markets, but many also have their own farmgate sales, tours or attractions. In the Blenkinsop Valley, Galey Farms plants a new corn maze each year, complemented by a western town, train ride, petting farm and more. Come mid-October, those features take on a decidedly spooky twist. Feast of Fields, September 18 at Marley Farms Winery, is another favourite among foodies and locavores, with the opportunity to taste the flavours of the Island from chefs, vintners, brewers, farmers and food artisans. Harvest time on the farm comes to Heritage Acres, a few minutes from Marley Farms, September 17 and 18, featuring train rides, steam-powered threshing, food, entertainment and more for the whole family. Don’t miss the butter-dipped corn on the cob! Enjoy the short ferry ride from Sidney for the 13th annual Salt Spring Island Apple Festival, 9am to 5pm Sunday, October 2. Start at Fulford Hall and take in a day-full of activities dedicated to one of the island’s tastiest crops. In fact, the island, one of the first areas on the West Coast to grow the popular fruit, now boasts more than 350 varieties of organic apples!
TO MARKET, TO MARKET Victoria’s community and farmer’s markets really are a highlight of the summer and fall seasons. The Moss Street Market is a long-standing city favourite for fresh and delicious organic produce, flowers and local arts and crafts. Entertainment and delicious food round out the experience at the corner of Moss and Fairfield streets, from 10am to 2pm Saturdays through early October.
Edibles aren't the on only delights markets at area farmers' ma JENNIFER BLYTH PHOTO
For those enjoying a visit to the Saanich Peninsula, stop by the delightful Peninsula Country Market, 9am to 1pm Saturdays through early October. Hosted at the Saanich Fairgrounds, in the middle of the region’s rich farm country, you’ll find plenty to please the palate, along with an assortment of arts and crafts and refreshments. For more local farmers' markets, see page 20.
WONDERFUL WINERIES & MORE One of the highlights of a visit to the Saanich Peninsula, just minutes from downtown, is a self-guided tour of the region’s awardwinning wineries. Stretch your tour a little farther with a drive over the Malahat to the equally honoured wineries and cideries of the Cowichan Valley. SEPTEMBER - OCTOBER 201 1 //

September and October, but have a special ghost tour at the end of October. Call 250383-2207 for information and reservations. Ghostly Goings-on To explore for ghosts on your own at any time, start downtown in several Old Town shops, such as Rogers' Chocolates and Old Morris Tobacconists. Tourism Victoria can also provide names of haunted restaurants, bars, hotels and bed and breakfasts. Market Square, once the centre of Victoria’s red-light district, is now a restored enclave of heritage shops on trendy Johnson Street. Here the ghost of Charlie Kincaid wanders restlessly where his throat was slit by his girlfriend, Belle Adams, whose ghost often appears, then suddenly vanishes. The majestic Parliament Buildings have many ghosts, notably architect Francis Rattenbury, who designed them in the 1890s. Murdered in England by his wife’s lover, he's returned to haunt the building that made him famous. Beneath majestic trees and crumbling tombstones at the Old Burying Ground on
Quadra at Meares Street lie 1,300 bodies. The spectres of Adelaide Griffin who died in 1861 and “Soap and Water” Johnson who committed suicide in 1871 often glide among the graves. Chinatown has many supernatural stories. Its secret tunnels are only myths, but its hauntings are very real. Feel the paranormal energy in Fan Tan Alley as you walk past its abandoned opium dens and gambling halls. Watch out for the ghost of Chung, a teenager who fell in love with one of Chinatown’s sing-song girls. When she spurned him, he chopped off her head as she sat at an open window. He fled through Fan Tan Alley and his ghost is felt there still, pushing people against the brick walls. The Victoria Golf Course on scenic Beach Drive is haunted by Doris Gravlin, strangled there by her husband in 1936 and hidden under a pile of logs on the nearby beach. She appears often as a white figure or light on the fairways, running quickly toward people and sometimes running circles around them near the beach and beside the road.

LOVE KILLS Join the University of Victoria’s Phoenix Theatre this fall for the celebrated play Love Kills. On stage October 13 to 22, this critically acclaimed rock musical by Kyle Jarrow blends music and drama for a thought-provoking examination of the criminal and psychological aftermath of two teenage lovers following their shooting spree. Embroiled into this real life saga, based on the 1958 murders by Charlie Starkweather, are the small town sheriff who detains them and his wife, as all four are forced to examine their own humanity and assume responsibility for their actions. Please note that the production features partial nudity, mature subject matter and strong language.
