Experience Victoria

Oh, So Relaxing

Soak in the best of the West Coast landscape on your way to one of the most restful and rejuvenating experiences the city offers – the new Boathouse Spa & Baths at the Oak Bay Beach Hotel. Unique to this seaside oasis is its three hot outdoor mineral pools overlooking the Pacific ocean, an experience found nowhere else in Victoria. Even better, all spa treatments include access to the pools either before or after, so be sure to save enough time when enjoying your favourite treatment for a relaxing dip.

Jade Victoria, located only two short blocks from the Inner Harbour, offers gem quality nephrite Jade jewellery, as well as carvings and one-of-a-kind pieces, from talented local and international artists.

To Market, To Market Community markets are a growing business in the Capital Region, from small neighbourhood farm markets to large gathering places like the favourite James Bay Community Market, where you can pick up everything you need for a picnic in the park, beautiful jewellery and an array of unique gifts for those special people back home. Located in the charming community of James Bay, steps from the Inner Harbour and BC Legislative Buildings, locals stop by every Saturday through Thanksgiving for the shopping, great food and entertainment. Other great choices in the local market scene include the Oak Bay Village Night Market, July 8, August 12 and September 9 and the Sidney Street Market, Thursdays through the end of August. 24

A foggy Hatley Castle

Hatley Park photo

Hatley Castle (part of Royal Roads University) is haunted by ghosts of the Dunsmuir family who once owned it. Featured in the Creepy Canada TV series, the formal gardens (admission fee) and museum (free) are open daily, and tours are available of castle and garden. Call 250-391-2666 for more information. The Old Burying Ground (Pioneer Square) is on the edge of downtown at Quadra at Meares streets, where beneath majestic trees and crumbling tombstones lie 1,300 bodies. The Victoria Golf Course on scenic Beach Drive beside the ocean in Oak Bay is haunted by Doris Gravlin who was strangled there by her husband in 1936. Many believe she is the most frequently seen ghost in town. Chinatown has many stories of ghosts and the supernatural. Its secret tunnels are only myths, but its hauntings are very real. Watch out for the ghost of Chung who murdered his girlfriend, then fled through Fan Tan Alley. Chinatown Walks are held every Saturday at 10:30am, with private tours by request. Tours, which start from the corner of Government and Fisgard streets (in front of Starbucks Coffee), focus on history, but at Halloween a few ghost stories slip in. Call 250-384-6698. 34

Market Square is a heritage oasis, created out of elegant brick buildings of the late 1800s. The ghosts here long ago frequented the saloons, brothels and gambling dens that lined Johnson Street, Victoria’s once-infamous red light district.

GHOSTS OF VICTORIA Festival As Halloween approaches, the Ghosts of Victoria Festival provides even more ghostly activities. Ross Bay Cemetery, open daily during daylight hours, is a beautiful oceanside Victorian cemetery where phantoms roam. History tours by the Old Cemeteries Society take place Sundays at 2pm. Come Halloween, several extra-special tours are scheduled. Find details at www.oldcem.bc.ca or call 250-598-8870. St. Ann’s Academy National Historic Site is a former convent school whose beautiful grounds are always open and whose restored 1858 chapel is open to visitors year-round. Watch for a Hallowee-themed tour in October dealing with life, death and unexplained phenomena at this 155-year-old historic site. These tours

are also available in French, upon request. Call 250-953-8820 for reservations and information. Ghostly Walks explore the haunted alleys and courtyards of downtown Victoria. These popular 90-minute walks take place nightly through October, with extra tours during busier times. These tours start at the Visitor Centre, across the street from the Empress Hotel. A special Halloween schedule runs in October. See more page 58, call 384-6698 or check www.ghostlywalks.com for all times and details. Victoria Carriage Tours operate daily but in the weeks leading up to Halloween, carriage drivers will tell ghost stories, upon request, in addition to their regular commentary. Call 250-383-2207 for information and reservations. During evenings in late October, look for Horse-Drawn Ghost Trolley Tours.

Galey Farm, at 4150 Blenkinsop Rd, gets into the Halloween spirit each year with its Festival of Fear, running 6 to 10pm nightly from October 16 to 31 and including several activities for all ages: Haunted House for kids, Carnevil Haunted House for adults, the Cornfield of Horror, Crazy Train and Madame Isabella’s SÊance. For more information, visit www.galeyfarms.net or call 250-477-5713. Oak Bay takes on a spooky look around Halloween with Pumpkin Art on the Avenue, featuring 500 uniquely carved pumpkins, displayed behind the Oak Bay Municipal Hall, 2167 Oak Bay Ave. By donation; for information visit www.visitoakbayvillage.ca For more details about the Ghosts of Victoria Festival and haunted places and activities, from the light-hearted to the serious, call Tourism Victoria at 250953-2033, go to their website at www. tourismvictoria.com or stop by the Visitor Centre beside the Inner Harbour downtown.

Amazing Abstracts Jock Macdonald: evolving form is AGGV’s largest exhibition of 2015 Jock Macdonald was a pioneer of abstract painting in Canada and an exceptional teacher. He influenced generations of artists and his stunning landscapes are national treasures. And for the first time in 30 years, a major retrospective of his work is being presented at the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria. Jock Macdonald: Evolving Form is an in-depth exhibition of the life and work of one of Canada’s finest artists. With just three stops on its tour, Victoria is pleased to present this special exhibition, running until September 7. Evolving Form tells the story of a naturally curious artist who explored the world through art. It provides a fresh look at Macdonald’s artistic practice and exhibits many previously unknown works for the first time. The exhibition traces the unique and dramatic transformations of Macdonald’s artistic development, beginning with his landscape paintings and his evolution toward automatic painting (or painting from the unconscious), surrealism and abstraction, while tracing

his life events and many influences through excerpts from Macdonald’s correspondence, sketches, and a diary he kept while living in Nootka Sound, Vancouver Island, from 1935 to 1936. Macdonald was a supporter of other artists, including those he taught and those he admired, such as Emily Carr.
